ברי נטר מימרי ופקודי תטשי גבך:
gbk thTshy wpqwdy mymry nTr bry
My son, keep my words. Lay up my commandments within you.

נטר פקודי וחיה ונימוסי היך בבתא דעינא:
deyna bbtha hyk wnymwsy wkhyh pqwdy nTr
Keep my commandments and live! Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye.

קטור אנון על אצבעתך כתוב אנון על לוח דלבך:
dlbk lwkh el anwn kthwb atsbethk el anwn qTwr
Bind them on your fingers. Write them on the tablet of your heart.

אמר לחכמתא אחתי אנת ומודעתא קרי לביונתא:
lbywntha qry wmwdetha anth akhthy lkhkmtha amr
Tell wisdom, “You are my sister.” Call understanding your relative,

דננטרך מן אתתא חילוניתא ומן נוכריתא דשעיען מלהא:
mlha dsheyen nwkrytha wmn khylwnytha aththa mn dnnTrk
that they may keep you from the strange woman, from the foreigner who flatters with her words.

מטול דמן כויא זערתא דביתי אדקת ומן חרכין דדירא:
ddyra khrkyn wmn adqth dbythy zertha kwya dmn mTwl
For at the window of my house, I looked out through my lattice.

וחזית בשברי ואסתכלית בטלאי ותמהית בחסיר רעיונא:
reywna bkhsyr wthmhyth bTlay wasthklyth bshbry wkhzyth
I saw among the simple ones. I discerned among the youths a young man void of understanding,

עבר בשוקא לקבל פנתה ובארחא דביתה מהלך:
mhlk dbythh wbarkha pnthh lqbl bshwqa ebr
passing through the street near her corner, he went the way to her house,

ברמשא במערב יומא בחשוכא דליליא ובחבירה:
wbkhbyrh dlylya bkhshwka ywma bmerb brmsha
in the twilight, in the evening of the day, in the middle of the night and in the darkness.

והא אתתא לעורעיה באסכמא דזניתא דמפרדא לבא דעלימי:
delymy lba dmprda dznytha baskma lewreyh aththa wha
Behold, there a woman met him with the attire of a prostitute, and with crafty intent.

ומרדתא היא ופרדתא בביתא לא שכנן רגלהא:
rglha shknn la bbytha wprdtha hya wmrdtha
She is loud and defiant. Her feet don’t stay in her house.

בעדנא בשוקי בעדנא בשקקי ולקבל כל פנתא דיאיא כמנא:
kmna dyaya pntha kl wlqbl bshqqy bedna bshwqy bedna
Now she is in the streets, now in the squares, and lurking at every corner.

ואתקפת ביה ונשקתיה ואחצפת אפהא ואמרת ליה:
lyh wamrth apha wakhtspth wnshqthyh byh wathqpth
So she caught him, and kissed him. With an impudent face she said to him:

דבחי דקרבני עלי יומנא שלמית נדרי:
ndry shlmyth ywmna ely dqrbny dbkhy
“Sacrifices of peace offerings are with me. Today I have paid my vows.

מטול היכנא נפקית לאורעך דמפכא הוית לרגשא ואמרת אדברנך:
adbrnk wamrth lrgsha hwyth dmpka lawrek npqyth hykna mTwl
Therefore I came out to meet you, to diligently seek your face, and I have found you.

בתשויתא שוית ערסי ובקרמא קרמתא מצראה:
mtsrah qrmtha wbqrma ersy shwyth bthshwytha
I have spread my couch with carpets of tapestry, with striped cloths of the yarn of Egypt.

רסית על ערסי מורא וכורקמא וקונמא:
wqwnma wkwrqma mwra ersy el rsyth
I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

תא נתבסם ברחמתא עד צפרא ונעסק חד לחד ברגאגתא:
brgagtha lkhd khd wnesq tspra ed brkhmtha nthbsm tha
Come, let’s take our fill of loving until the morning. Let’s solace ourselves with loving.

דגברא לית הוא בביתא אזיל באורח רחיקא:
rkhyqa bawrkh azyl bbytha hwa lyth dgbra
For my husband isn’t at home. He has gone on a long journey.
20
צררא דכספא נסב בידיה וליומא דעדא אתי לביתיה:
lbythyh athy deda wlywma bydyh nsb dkspa tsrra
He has taken a bag of money with him. He will come home at the full moon.”

ואטעי יתיה בסוגיא דמלהא ובשעיעותא דספותהא תפתיה:
thpthyh dspwthha wbsheyewtha dmlha bswgya ythyh waTey
With persuasive words, she led him astray. With the flattering of her lips, she seduced him.

והוא אזל בתראה שליאית היך תורא דאזיל לות טבחא והיך כלבא לאסורא:
laswra klba whyk Tbkha lwth dazyl thwra hyk shlyayth bthrah azl whwa
He followed her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, as a fool stepping into a noose.

והיך אילא דמפריח גירא בכבדיה ומסתרהב היך צפרא לות פוחא ולא ידע דלמותא דנפשיה אזיל:
azyl dnpshyh dlmwtha yde wla pwkha lwth tspra hyk wmsthrhb bkbdyh gyra dmprykh ayla whyk
Until an arrow strikes through his liver, as a bird hurries to the snare, and doesn’t know that it will cost his life.

והשתא בניא שמעון לי ואציתו למימרי דפומי:
dpwmy lmymry watsythw ly shmewn bnya whshtha
Now therefore, sons, listen to me. Pay attention to the words of my mouth.

לא יסטי לבך לארחתהא ולא תטעי בשבילהא:
bshbylha thTey wla larkhthha lbk ysTy la
Don’t let your heart turn to her ways. Don’t go astray in her paths,
26
מטול דסגיעי קטיליא אפלת ועשינין כולהון קטיליא:
qTylya kwlhwn weshynyn aplth qTylya dsgyey mTwl
for she has thrown down many wounded. Yes, all her slain are a mighty army.
