ברי אין ערבתא לחברך אשלימתא לנוכראה ידך:
ydk lnwkrah ashlymtha lkhbrk erbtha ayn bry
My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger,

אתצידתא במאמרא דפומך אתאחדתא במאמרא דפומך:
dpwmk bmamra athakhdtha dpwmk bmamra athtsydtha
you are trapped by the words of your mouth; you are ensnared with the words of your mouth.

עביד היכנא בני ואתפצא מטול דנפלתא ביד דחברך אזל גרג חביל חברך:
khbrk khbyl grg azl dkhbrk byd dnpltha mTwl wathptsa bny hykna ebyd
Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, since you have come into the hand of your neighbor. Go, humble yourself. Press your plea with your neighbor.

לא תתן שנתא לעינך ונימתא לגביניך:
lgbynyk wnymtha leynk shntha ththn la
Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.

דתתפצי היך טביא מן נשבא והיך צפרא מן פוחא:
pwkha mn tspra whyk nshba mn Tbya hyk dththptsy
Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

אתרמי לשומשמנא עטלא חמי ארחתהון ואתחכם:
wathkhkm arkhthhwn khmy eTla lshwmshmna athrmy
Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise;

דלית לה חצדא היך אף לא סרכא ושליטא:
wshlyTa srka la ap hyk khtsda lh dlyth
which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,

מתקנא בקיטא לחמה וגבשא בחצדא מיכלה:
myklh bkhtsda wgbsha lkhmh bqyTa mthqna
provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.

עד מה לאימת אנת דמיך אנת עטלא ולאימת קימת מן שנתך:
shnthk mn qymth wlaymth eTla anth dmyk anth laymth mh ed
How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?

קליל שנתא קליל נומתא קליל תחבק ידך למדמכא:
lmdmka ydk thkhbq qlyl nwmtha qlyl shntha qlyl
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep—

ותיתי ותדרוך מסכנותך וחוסרנך היך גברא כשרא:
kshra gbra hyk wkhwsrnk msknwthk wthdrwk wthythy
so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man.

בר נש טלומא גברא עולא מהלך בעקימות פומיה:
pwmyh beqymwth mhlk ewla gbra Tlwma nsh br
A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he who walks with a perverse mouth,

רמז בעינוי ותכס ברגלוי ורמז באצבעתיה:
batsbethyh wrmz brglwy wthks beynwy rmz
who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers,
14
ומתהפך בלביה וחשל בישתא בכל זמן תגרי רמי:
rmy thgry zmn bkl byshtha wkhshl blbyh wmthhpk
in whose heart is perverseness, who devises evil continually, who always sows discord.

מטול הכנא מן שליא ניתי תבריה ומן שליא נתבר ולא תהוי ליה אסיותא:
asywtha lyh thhwy wla nthbr shlya wmn thbryh nythy shlya mn hkna mTwl
Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy.

שית אינון דסני אלהא ובשבע אסדית נפשיה:
npshyh asdyth wbshbe alha dsny aynwn shyth
There are six things which Yahweh hates; yes, seven which are an abomination to him:

עיני רמתא ולישנא דשקרא וידי דשפכן דמא זכי:
zky dma dshpkn wydy dshqra wlyshna rmtha eyny
arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18
לבא דחשל מחשבתא רעתא ורגלי דמסתרהבן למרהט לבישתא:
lbyshtha lmrhT dmsthrhbn wrgly retha mkhshbtha dkhshl lba
a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief,
19
סהדא דשקרא דמלל כדבותא ומן דרמי תגרי בין אחי:
akhy byn thgry drmy wmn kdbwtha dmll dshqra shda
a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.
20
טור ברי פוקדנא דאבוך ולא תטעי מנימוסא דאמך:
damk mnymwsa thTey wla dabwk pwqdna bry Twr
My son, keep your father’s commandment, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching.

קטורנון בלבך תדירא וכרוך אנון בצורך:
btswrk anwn wkrwk thdyra blbk qTwrnwn
Bind them continually on your heart. Tie them around your neck.

במיזלך תתדבר עמך במדמכך תתנטר עלך ותתער היא תהוי רציך:
rtsyk thhwy hya wthther elk ththnTr bmdmkk emk ththdbr bmyzlk
When you walk, it will lead you. When you sleep, it will watch over you. When you awake, it will talk with you.

מטול שרגא הוא פוקדנא ונימוסא נוהרא ואורחא דחיי ומכסנותא ומרדותא:
wmrdwtha wmksnwtha dkhyy wawrkha nwhra wnymwsa pwqdna hwa shrga mTwl
For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,

דתנטרך מן אתתא בישתא ומן שעיעותא דלישנא דנוכריתא:
dnwkrytha dlyshna sheyewtha wmn byshtha aththa mn dthnTrk
to keep you from the immoral woman, from the flattery of the wayward wife’s tongue.

לא תרוג שופרה בלבבך ולא תשרגננך בגבינתהא:
bgbynthha thshrgnnk wla blbbk shwprh thrwg la
Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart, neither let her captivate you with her eyelids.

מטול דדמיא מלתא דזניתא היך גרצתא דלחמא ואתת גברא נפשא יקירתא צידא:
tsyda yqyrtha npsha gbra wathth dlkhma grtstha hyk dznytha mltha ddmya mTwl
For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread. The adulteress hunts for your precious life.

דלמא סים בר נשא נורא בעוביה ולבושיה לא יקיד:
yqyd la wlbwshyh bewbyh nwra nsha br sym dlma
Can a man scoop fire into his lap, and his clothes not be burned?
28
אי דלמא מהלך גברא עלוי גומרי ורגלוי לא מתכוין:
mthkwyn la wrglwy gwmry elwy gbra mhlk dlma ay
Or can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?

היכנא מה דעאל על אתת חבריה למגור עמה לא נזכי כל מן דקריב בה:
bh dqryb mn kl nzky la emh lmgwr khbryh athth el deal mh hykna
So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife. Whoever touches her will not be unpunished.

לא למתרמרו לגנבא דגנב דתשבע נפשיה מטול דכפן:
dkpn mTwl npshyh dthshbe dgnb lgnba lmthrmrw la
Men don’t despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry,
31
ומן דמשתכח פריע חד בשבעה וכוליה מזלא דביתיה יהיב:
yhyb dbythyh mzla wkwlyh bshbeh khd prye dmshthkkh wmn
but if he is found, he shall restore seven times. He shall give all the wealth of his house.
32
מן דגיר באתתא חסיר דרעינא ומן דבעי די יחבל נפשיה הוא עבד לה:
lh ebd hwa npshyh ykhbl dy dbey wmn dreyna khsyr baththa dgyr mn
He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul.

מכתשי וצערי יארע וחסודיה לא מטעי:
mTey la wkhswdyh yare wtsery mkthshy
He will get wounds and dishonor. His reproach will not be wiped away.
34
מטול דטננא חמתא דגברא ולא חיס ביומא דפורענא:
dpwrena bywma khys wla dgbra khmtha dTnna mTwl
For jealousy arouses the fury of the husband. He won’t spare in the day of vengeance.
