שמעו בניא מרדותא דאב ואציתו למדע ביונא:
bywna lmde watsythw dab mrdwtha bnya shmew
Listen, sons, to a father’s instruction. Pay attention and know understanding;

מטול דיולפנא טבא יהבית לכון ונימוסי לא תשבקון:
thshbqwn la wnymwsy lkwn yhbyth Tba dywlpna mTwl
for I give you sound learning. Don’t forsake my law.

מטול דברא הוית לאבא מפנק ויחידא קדם אמי:
amy qdm wykhyda mpnq laba hwyth dbra mTwl
For I was a son to my father, tender and an only child in the sight of my mother.

ואלפני ואמר לי יקמט מלי לבך נטר פקודי וחיה:
wkhyh pqwdy nTr lbk mly yqmT ly wamr walpny
He taught me, and said to me: “Let your heart retain my words. Keep my commandments, and live.

קנה חכמתא קנה ביונא לא תנשי ולא תסטי מן מאמרי פומי:
pwmy mamry mn thsTy wla thnshy la bywna qnh khkmtha qnh
Get wisdom. Get understanding. Don’t forget, and don’t deviate from the words of my mouth.

ולא תשבקיה ותנטריך רחמה דתגביך:
dthgbyk rkhmh wthnTryk thshbqyh wla
Don’t forsake her, and she will preserve you. Love her, and she will keep you.

ריש חכמתא קנה חכמתא ובכל קנינך קנה ביונא:
bywna qnh qnynk wbkl khkmtha qnh khkmtha rysh
Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

חבביה די תרוממנך וחבקיה דתיקרך:
dthyqrk wkhbqyh thrwmmnk dy khbbyh
Esteem her, and she will exalt you. She will bring you to honor when you embrace her.

ותשים ברישך יאיותא דחסדא כלילא דשבהורא עלך:
elk dshbhwra klyla dkhsda yaywtha bryshk wthshym
She will give to your head a garland of grace. She will deliver a crown of splendor to you.”

שמע ברי וקבל מני ונסגיון שניא דחיך:
dkhyk shnya wnsgywn mny wqbl bry shme
Listen, my son, and receive my sayings. The years of your life will be many.

ארחתא דחכמתא אלפתך והלכתך בשבילי תריצי:
thrytsy bshbyly whlkthk alpthk dkhkmtha arkhtha
I have taught you in the way of wisdom. I have led you in straight paths.
12
כד תיזל לא תתעוק ארחך ואין תרהט לא תתקל:
ththql la thrhT wayn arkhk ththewq la thyzl kd
When you go, your steps will not be hampered. When you run, you will not stumble.

תתחזק במרדותא ולא תרפא נטריה מטול דהיא חיך:
khyk dhya mTwl nTryh thrpa wla bmrdwtha ththkhzq
Take firm hold of instruction. Don’t let her go. Keep her, for she is your life.

בארחא דרשיעי לא תיזל ולא תטן בארחא דבישין:
dbyshyn barkha thTn wla thyzl la drshyey barkha
Don’t enter into the path of the wicked. Don’t walk in the way of evil men.

אריש ולא תעבר עמהון סטי ועבר מנהון:
mnhwn webr sTy emhwn thebr wla arysh
Avoid it, and don’t pass by it. Turn from it, and pass on.

לא דמכין עד מה דמבאשין ופרידא שנתהון עד מה דעבדין תקלא:
thqla debdyn mh ed shnthhwn wpryda dmbashyn mh ed dmkyn la
For they don’t sleep unless they do evil. Their sleep is taken away, unless they make someone fall.

דמיכלתהון מיכלתא דרשיעי וחמרא דחטופיא שתין:
shthyn dkhTwpya wkhmra drshyey mykltha dmyklthhwn
For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.

וארחא דצדיקי כנהורא דמזהר ואזל נהריה עד מה דתקין יומא:
ywma dthqyn mh ed nhryh wazl dmzhr knhwra dtsdyqy warkha
But the path of the righteous is like the dawning light that shines more and more until the perfect day.
19
וארחא דרשיעי חכירא ולא ידעין במנא מתתקלין:
mththqlyn bmna ydeyn wla khkyra drshyey warkha
The way of the wicked is like darkness. They don’t know what they stumble over.
20
ברי למלי אצית ולמאמרי צלי אודנך:
awdnk tsly wlmamry atsyth lmly bry
My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings.
21
לא נזלן מעינך נטרנון בגויה דלבך:
dlbk bgwyh nTrnwn meynk nzln la
Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart.
22
מטול דחיי אנון למן דמשכח להון ולכולא בשריה מאסי:
masy bshryh wlkwla lhwn dmshkkh lmn anwn dkhyy mTwl
For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body.

מכל זהורא נטר לבך מטול דמניה הוא מפקנא דחיי:
dkhyy mpqna hwa dmnyh mTwl lbk nTr zhwra mkl
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.
24
אעבר מנך עקומא דפומא ועאתא דשפותא ארחק מנך:
mnk arkhq dshpwtha weatha dpwma eqwma mnk aebr
Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you.
25
עינך בתריצותא נאורן ותמריך נתרצון לקובלך:
lqwblk nthrtswn wthmryk nawrn bthrytswtha eynk
Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you.

אעבר רגלך משבילי בישי וכולהון ארחתך מתקנן:
mthqnn arkhthk wkwlhwn byshy mshbyly rglk aebr
Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established.
