לא תשתבהר ביומא דלמחר דלא ידעת מנא יליד יומא:
ywma ylyd mna ydeth dla dlmkhr bywma thshthbhr la
Don’t boast about tomorrow; for you don’t know what a day may bring.

נשבחנך חילוני ולא פומך נוכראה ולא שפותך:
shpwthk wla nwkrah pwmk wla khylwny nshbkhnk
Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.

יקרא כיפא ונטול חלא ורוגזיה דשטיא יקיר מן תרויהון:
thrwyhwn mn yqyr dshTya wrwgzyh khla wnTwl kypa yqra
A stone is heavy, and sand is a burden; but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.

נכזריותא היא חימתא וחיפא היא רוגזא ומנו קאם קדם קנאתא:
qnatha qdm qam wmnw rwgza hya wkhypa khymtha hya nkzrywtha
Wrath is cruel, and anger is overwhelming; but who is able to stand before jealousy?

טבתא מכסנותא דמגליא מן רחמותא דמטשיא:
dmTshya rkhmwtha mn dmglya mksnwtha Tbtha
Better is open rebuke than hidden love.

שפירן אנון פודעתיה דרחמא ובישן נושקתא דסנאה:
dsnah nwshqtha wbyshn drkhma pwdethyh anwn shpyrn
The wounds of a friend are faithful, although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

נפשא דשבעא דישא כבריתא ונפשא דכפנא כל מידם דמריר חלי לה:
lh khly dmryr mydm kl dkpna wnpsha kbrytha dysha dshbea npsha
A full soul loathes a honeycomb; but to a hungry soul, every bitter thing is sweet.

היך צפרא דמשנא מן קנה היכנא הוא גברא דמשני דוכתיה:
dwkthyh dmshny gbra hwa hykna qnh mn dmshna tspra hyk
As a bird that wanders from her nest, so is a man who wanders from his home.

משחא ובוסמא דמחדין לבא היכנא גברא דמבסים לחברי בתרעיתא דנפשיה:
dnpshyh bthreytha lkhbry dmbsym gbra hykna lba dmkhdyn wbwsma mshkha
Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart; so does earnest counsel from a man’s friend.

חברך וחבריה דאבוך לא תשבוק ובביתא דאחוך לא תעול ביומא דתברך טב שכנא קריב מאח רחיק:
rkhyq makh qryb shkna Tb dthbrk bywma thewl la dakhwk wbbytha thshbwq la dabwk wkhbryh khbrk
Don’t forsake your friend and your father’s friend. Don’t go to your brother’s house in the day of your disaster. A neighbor who is near is better than a distant brother.

אתחכם ברי וחדי לבי ואחזר מלתא לאלין דמחסדין לי:
ly dmkhsdyn lalyn mltha wakhzr lby wkhdy bry athkhkm
Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart, then I can answer my tormentor.

ערימא חזא בישתא ומטשי ושברי עברין עלה וחסרין:
wkhsryn elh ebryn wshbry wmTshy byshtha khza eryma
A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

מתנסיב מרטוטי דמן דעריב לנוכראה ועל אפי נוכריא משכניה:
mshknyh nwkrya apy wel lnwkrah deryb dmn mrTwTy mthnsyb
Take his garment when he puts up collateral for a stranger. Hold it for a wayward woman!

דמברך לחבריה בקלא רמא בצפרא בקידומא לוטתא תתחשיב ליה:
lyh ththkhshyb lwTtha bqydwma btspra rma bqla lkhbryh dmbrk
He who blesses his neighbor with a loud voice early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse by him.

איך דלפא דנטף ביומא דסגרירא היכנא אתתא תגרנותא דנציא:
dntsya thgrnwtha aththa hykna dsgryra bywma dnTp dlpa ayk
A continual dropping on a rainy day and a contentious wife are alike:

רוחא גרביתא קשיא ובשמא דימינא מתקריא:
mthqrya dymyna wbshma qshya grbytha rwkha
restraining her is like restraining the wind, or like grasping oil in his right hand.

פרזלא בפרזלא לטיש וגברא לטיש אפיה דחבריה:
dkhbryh apyh lTysh wgbra lTysh bprzla przla
Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.

דנטר תינתא אכיל פריהא ודזהיר במריה נתיקר:
nthyqr bmryh wdzhyr pryha akyl thyntha dnTr
Whoever tends the fig tree shall eat its fruit. He who looks after his master shall be honored.

היך מיא והיך פרצופי דלא דמין חד לחד היכנא לביהון דבני נשא לא דמין חד לחד:
lkhd khd dmyn la nsha dbny lbyhwn hykna lkhd khd dmyn dla prtswpy whyk mya hyk
Like water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.

שיול ואבדנא לא סבען ועיני דגברא לא סבען:
sben la dgbra weyny sben la wabdna shywl
Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied; and a man’s eyes are never satisfied.
21
צרפא לכספא וכורא לדהבא וגברא מן פומא דמשבחנוי:
dmshbkhnwy pwma mn wgbra ldhba wkwra lkspa tsrpa
The crucible is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but man is refined by his praise.
22
אין מחית ליה לשטיא במכתשי בגו סיעתא ובאודרך לא תעביר מניה שטיותיה:
shTywthyh mnyh thebyr la wbawdrk syetha bgw bmkthshy lshTya lyh mkhyth ayn
Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with grain, yet his foolishness will not be removed from him.

מה דדעי אנת דע אפי ענך ושים לבך על קוטין:
qwTyn el lbk wshym enk apy de anth ddey mh
Know well the state of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds,
24
מטול דלא לעלם היא אחסנא אף שלם דרא לדרא:
ldra dra shlm ap akhsna hya lelm dla mTwl
for riches are not forever, nor does the crown endure to all generations.
25
שבח עמירא ואתחמי דתאה ואתכנש עשבא דטורי:
dTwry eshba wathknsh dthah wathkhmy emyra shbkh
The hay is removed, and the new growth appears, the grasses of the hills are gathered in.
26
אמרי ללבושך וגדיא לתגרותך:
lthgrwthk wgdya llbwshk amry
The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats are the price of a field.
