איך תלגא בקיטא והיך מטרא בחצדא היכנא לא יאי לסכלא יקרא:
yqra lskla yay la hykna bkhtsda mTra whyk bqyTa thlga ayk
Like snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool.

היך צפרא דטאס והיך פרחתא דפרחא היכנא לוטתא דמגן לא תעול:
thewl la dmgn lwTtha hykna dprkha prkhtha whyk dTas tspra hyk
Like a fluttering sparrow, like a darting swallow, so the undeserved curse doesn’t come to rest.

שוטא לסוסא ומגלבא לחמרא ושובטא לגושמיהון דסכלי:
dskly lgwshmyhwn wshwbTa lkhmra wmglba lswsa shwTa
A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools!

לא תתל פתגמא לסכלא היך שטיותא דלא תדמי ליה אף אנת:
anth ap lyh thdmy dla shTywtha hyk lskla pthgma ththl la
Don’t answer a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him.

אלא מלל עם שטיא בחכימותך דלא נסבר בנפשיה דחכימא הוא:
hwa dkhkyma bnpshyh nsbr dla bkhkymwthk shTya em mll ala
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

מן דרהטא ברגלוי שתי חטופא מן דמשדר מלי ביד סכלא:
skla byd mly dmshdr mn khTwpa shthy brglwy drhTa mn
One who sends a message by the hand of a fool is cutting off feet and drinking violence.

אין תתל הלכתא לחגירא תקבל מלתא מן פומיה דסכלא:
dskla pwmyh mn mltha thqbl lkhgyra hlktha ththl ayn
Like the legs of the lame that hang loose, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

היך נקצא דטסא בקלעא היכנא מן דעבד יקרא לסכלא:
lskla yqra debd mn hykna bqlea dTsa nqtsa hyk
As one who binds a stone in a sling, so is he who gives honor to a fool.

כובא סלק בידא דרויא ושטיותא בפומיה דסכלא:
dskla bpwmyh wshTywtha drwya byda slq kwba
Like a thorn bush that goes into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

סגי חיש בשריה דסכלא ורויא עבר ימא:
yma ebr wrwya dskla bshryh khysh sgy
As an archer who wounds all, so is he who hires a fool or he who hires those who pass by.

היך כלבא דהפך על תיוביה היכנא סכלא דתני בסכלותיה:
bsklwthyh dthny skla hykna thywbyh el dhpk klba hyk
As a dog that returns to his vomit, so is a fool who repeats his folly.

אין חזיתא גברא דחכים בעיני נפשיה סכלא טב מניה:
mnyh Tb skla npshyh beyny dkhkym gbra khzytha ayn
Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

אמר עטלא שחלא בארחא אריא בינת שוקי:
shwqy bynth arya barkha shkhla eTla amr
The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road! A fierce lion roams the streets!”

היך תרעא דמכרך על צירתה היכנא עטלא על ערסיה:
ersyh el eTla hykna tsyrthh el dmkrk threa hyk
As the door turns on its hinges, so does the sluggard on his bed.
15
עטלא מטשי אידיה בשחתא לעי דנהפכי לפומיה:
lpwmyh dnhpky ley bshkhtha aydyh mTshy eTla
The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.
16
עטלא חכים בעינוי טב מן שובעא יהבי טעמא:
Tema yhby shwbea mn Tb beynwy khkym eTla
The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer with discretion.

דלכד באדנוי דכלבא נצי ומתנצי על דינא דלא דיליה:
dylyh dla dyna el wmthntsy ntsy dklba badnwy dlkd
Like one who grabs a dog’s ears is one who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own.

איך הוא דמתחת דפשט גירי שניני דמותא:
dmwtha shnyny gyry dpshT dmthkhth hwa ayk
Like a madman who shoots torches, arrows, and death,

היכנא גברא דמרמי בחבריה ואמר מגחך גחכית:
gkhkyth mgkhk wamr bkhbryh dmrmy gbra hykna
is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “Am I not joking?”

היכנא דלית קיסי דעכא נורא והיכנא דלית שגושא ישתק תגרא:
thgra yshthq shgwsha dlyth whykna nwra deka qysy dlyth hykna
For lack of wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, a quarrel dies down.

טרטקל לגומרי וקיסי לנורא וגברא תגרנא מחרה בהותא:
bhwtha mkhrh thgrna wgbra lnwra wqysy lgwmry TrTql
As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man to kindling strife.

מלוי דשגושא מרכנן ליה והנון נחתן לגוה דכרסא:
dkrsa lgwh nkhthn whnwn lyh mrknn dshgwsha mlwy
The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, they go down into the innermost parts.

היך כספא מסליא דקרים על חספא היכנא שפותא דדלקן וליבא בישא:
bysha wlyba ddlqn shpwtha hykna khspa el dqrym mslya kspa hyk
Like silver dross on an earthen vessel are the lips of a fervent one with an evil heart.
24
מן שפותיה מתידע סנאה ובגויה סאם רמיותא:
rmywtha sam wbgwyh snah mthyde shpwthyh mn
A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbors evil in his heart.
25
ואין מחנן בקליה לא תהימין ביה מטול דשבע בישתא אית בלביה:
blbyh ayth byshtha dshbe mTwl byh thhymyn la bqlyh mkhnn wayn
When his speech is charming, don’t believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart.

דמכסה סנואתא במורסתא תתגלי בישתיה בכנשתא:
bknshtha byshthyh ththgly bmwrstha snwatha dmksh
His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
27
דחפר גומצא ביה נפול ודמערגל כיפא עלוי הפכא:
hpka elwy kypa wdmergl npwl byh gwmtsa dkhpr
Whoever digs a pit shall fall into it. Whoever rolls a stone, it will come back on him.
