לא תטן במרי בישתא ולא תתרגרג למהוי עמהון:
emhwn lmhwy ththrgrg wla byshtha bmry thTn la
Don’t be envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them;
2
מטול דרבונא רגן לבהון ועולא שפותהון ממללן:
mmlln shpwthhwn wewla lbhwn rgn drbwna mTwl
for their hearts plot violence and their lips talk about mischief.

בחכמתא מתבני ביתא ובביונא מתקן:
mthqn wbbywna bytha mthbny bkhkmtha
Through wisdom a house is built; by understanding it is established;

ובידיעתא קיטוני מתמלין כל מזלא יקירא ובסימא:
wbsyma yqyra mzla kl mthmlyn qyTwny wbydyetha
by knowledge the rooms are filled with all rare and beautiful treasure.

טב גבר חכימא מן עשינא וגברא דידיעתא מן הוא דזריז בחיליה:
bkhylyh dzryz hwa mn dydyetha wgbra eshyna mn khkyma gbr Tb
A wise man has great power. A knowledgeable man increases strength,

מטול במדברנותא תעבד לך קרבא ופורקנא בסוגעא דמלכנא:
dmlkna bswgea wpwrqna qrba lk thebd bmdbrnwtha mTwl
for by wise guidance you wage your war, and victory is in many advisors.

מתרעם שטיא בחכמתא ובתרעי לא פתח פומיה:
pwmyh pthkh la wbthrey bkhkmtha shTya mthrem
Wisdom is too high for a fool. He doesn’t open his mouth in the gate.

מן דחשב למבאשא נקרון ליה מרי תרעיתא בישתא:
byshtha threytha mry lyh nqrwn lmbasha dkhshb mn
One who plots to do evil will be called a schemer.

תרעיתא דשטיא חטאה ומרחקתא דבר נשא חכימא ממקנותא:
mmqnwtha khkyma nsha dbr wmrkhqtha khTah dshTya threytha
The schemes of folly are sin. The mocker is detested by men.

אין תתרפי ביומא דעקתא מתתעיק חילך:
khylk mththeyq deqtha bywma ththrpy ayn
If you falter in the time of trouble, your strength is small.

פצא לאלין דמתנסבין למותא ומתדברין לקטלא חסוך:
khswk lqTla wmthdbryn lmwtha dmthnsbyn lalyn ptsa
Rescue those who are being led away to death! Indeed, hold back those who are staggering to the slaughter!

ואין תימר דלא ידענא דא הלא תרעיתא דלבא אלהא בצי ודנטר נפשך הוא ידע ופרע לבר נשא היך עובדוי:
ewbdwy hyk nsha lbr wpre yde hwa npshk wdnTr btsy alha dlba threytha hla da ydena dla thymr wayn
If you say, “Behold, we didn’t know this,” doesn’t he who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, doesn’t he know it? Shall he not give to every man according to his work?

ברי אכול דובשא מטול דטב וכבריתא דחילא על חכך:
khkk el dkhyla wkbrytha dTb mTwl dwbsha akwl bry
My son, eat honey, for it is good, the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to your taste;

היכנא אתחכם בנפשך דאין משכחת קדמיתא אתיא אחריתא דטבא מנה וסכויך לא נגמר:
ngmr la wskwyk mnh dTba akhrytha athya qdmytha mshkkhth dayn bnpshk athkhkm hykna
so you shall know wisdom to be to your soul. If you have found it, then there will be a reward: Your hope will not be cut off.

לא תכמן רשיעא לדיריה דצדיקא ולא תרכין בית משריה:
mshryh byth thrkyn wla dtsdyqa ldyryh rshyea thkmn la
Don’t lay in wait, wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous. Don’t destroy his resting place;

מטול דשובעא זמנין נפל צדיקא וקאי ורשיעי מתתקלין בבישתא:
bbyshtha mththqlyn wrshyey wqay tsdyqa npl zmnyn dshwbea mTwl
for a righteous man falls seven times and rises up again, but the wicked are overthrown by calamity.

במפלותיה דבעיל דבבך לא תחדי וכד יתקל בבישתא לא ידוץ לבך:
lbk ydwts la bbyshtha ythql wkd thkhdy la dbbk dbeyl bmplwthyh
Don’t rejoice when your enemy falls. Don’t let your heart be glad when he is overthrown,

דלא יבאש באפוי דאלהא כד יחזה ויהפך רוגזיה מניה:
mnyh rwgzyh wyhpk ykhzh kd dalha bapwy ybash dla
lest Yahweh see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.
19
לא תתחסם בבישיא ולא תטן ברשיעיא:
brshyeya thTn wla bbyshya ththkhsm la
Don’t fret yourself because of evildoers, neither be envious of the wicked;
20
מטול דלא הויא אחריתא טבא לבישי ושרגהון דרשיעי נדעך:
ndek drshyey wshrghwn lbyshy Tba akhrytha hwya dla mTwl
for there will be no reward to the evil man. The lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
21
דחל מן אלהא ברי ומן מלכא ועם שטיי לא תתחלט:
ththkhlT la shTyy wem mlka wmn bry alha mn dkhl
My son, fear Yahweh and the king. Don’t join those who are rebellious,

מטול דבשליא אתי תברהון וסופא דשניהון מן ידיע:
ydye mn dshnyhwn wswpa thbrhwn athy dbshlya mTwl
for their calamity will rise suddenly. Who knows what destruction may come from them both?

אף הלין לחכימי אמרנא למסב אפי בדינא לא שפיר:
shpyr la bdyna apy lmsb amrna lkhkymy hlyn ap
These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.

דיימר לרשיעא צדיק אנת יליטוניה עממי ויברוניה אומתא:
awmtha wybrwnyh emmy ylyTwnyh anth tsdyq lrshyea dyymr
He who says to the wicked, “You are righteous,” peoples will curse him, and nations will abhor him—
25
ולמכסני יבסם ועליהון תיתא ברכתא טבתא:
Tbtha brktha thytha welyhwn ybsm wlmksny
but it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and a rich blessing will come on them.
26
שפותהון ננשקו דאלין דמהפכין מלי תריצתא:
thrytstha mly dmhpkyn dalyn nnshqw shpwthhwn
An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.
27
אתקן לברא עבידתך ועתדה לך בחקלא ובתר כן בני ביתך:
bythk bny kn wbthr bkhqla lk wethdh ebydthk lbra athqn
Prepare your work outside, and get your fields ready. Afterwards, build your house.
28
לא תהוי סהדא רגלא בחברך ותשרגג בשפותך:
bshpwthk wthshrgg bkhbrk rgla shda thhwy la
Don’t be a witness against your neighbor without cause. Don’t deceive with your lips.

לא תימר היך דעבד לי כן אעבד ליה ואהפך ליה היך עובדוי:
ewbdwy hyk lyh wahpk lyh aebd kn ly debd hyk thymr la
Don’t say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will repay the man according to his work.”
30
על חקלי דגברא עטלא עברית ועל כרמי דבר נשא חסר רעינא:
reyna khsr nsha dbr krmy wel ebryth eTla dgbra khqly el
I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding.

והא סליק כליה יערי וכסיו אפוי חורלי וסיגא דכיפוי אתעקר:
atheqr dkypwy wsyga khwrly apwy wksyw yery klyh slyq wha
Behold, it was all grown over with thorns. Its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down.

וחזית אנא ושמית לבי וחמית וקבלית מרדותא:
mrdwtha wqblyth wkhmyth lby wshmyth ana wkhzyth
Then I saw, and considered well. I saw, and received instruction:

קליל תנום קליל תדמוך קליל תשים ידיך על חדיך ותדמוך:
wthdmwk khdyk el ydyk thshym qlyl thdmwk qlyl thnwm qlyl
a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep,
