אין יתיבתא למיכל עם שליטי אתבין כמו רשים קדמיך:
qdmyk rshym kmw athbyn shlyTy em lmykl ythybtha ayn
When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you;

ותשים סכינא בלועך אין מרא דנפשך את:
ath dnpshk mra ayn blwek skyna wthshym
put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite.

לא תתרגג לבישולוי והנון מיכולתא דכדבותא:
dkdbwtha mykwltha whnwn lbyshwlwy ththrgg la
Don’t be desirous of his dainties, since they are deceitful food.

לא תקרב לעתירא אלא בביונתך פרק מניה:
mnyh prq bbywnthk ala lethyra thqrb la
Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint.

אין תצר עינך ביה לא מתחזי לך מטול דמעבד עבד ליה גפתא היך נשרא דטיס בשמיא:
bshmya dTys nshra hyk gptha lyh ebd dmebd mTwl lk mthkhzy la byh eynk thtsr ayn
Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.

לא תיכול עם גברא דבישא עיניה ולא תתרגג לבישולוי:
lbyshwlwy ththrgg wla eynyh dbysha gbra em thykwl la
Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and don’t crave his delicacies,

מטול דאיך תרעא רמא הכן הוא רם בנפשיה אכיל ואשתי אמר לך ולביה נכיל צדך:
tsdk nkyl wlbyh lk amr washthy akyl bnpshyh rm hwa hkn rma threa dayk mTwl
for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

ולחמא דאכלתא מתיבת ליה ומחבלת מלך דבסימן:
dbsymn mlk wmkhblth lyh mthybth dakltha wlkhma
You will vomit up the morsel which you have eaten and waste your pleasant words.

באדני דסכלא לא תמלל מטול דשיט לסכולא דמליך:
dmlyk lskwla dshyT mTwl thmll la dskla badny
Don’t speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.

לא תשני תחומא דמן עלמא ובחלקא דיתמי לא תעול:
thewl la dythmy wbkhlqa elma dmn thkhwma thshny la
Don’t move the ancient boundary stone. Don’t encroach on the fields of the fatherless,

מטול די פרוקהון תקיף והוא נדון ית דנהון עמך:
emk dnhwn yth ndwn whwa thqyp prwqhwn dy mTwl
for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you.

אעול לבך למרדותא ואודנך למימרי דידיעתא:
dydyetha lmymry wawdnk lmrdwtha lbk aewl
Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.

לא תמנע מן טליא מרדותא מטול דאין מחית ליה בשבטא לא מאת:
math la bshbTa lyh mkhyth dayn mTwl mrdwtha Tlya mn thmne la
Don’t withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

אנת בשבטא מחית ליה ונפשיה מפלטת מן שיול:
shywl mn mplTth wnpshyh lyh mkhyth bshbTa anth
Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol.
15
ברי אם חכים לבך אף אנא חדי אנא בלבי:
blby ana khdy ana ap lbk khkym am bry
My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine.
16
ונרוזן כליותי כד ימללון ספותיך תריצתא:
thrytstha spwthyk ymllwn kd klywthy wnrwzn
Yes, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.

לא נטן לבך בחטאי אלא בדחלתא דאלהא כל יומא:
ywma kl dalha bdkhltha ala bkhTay lbk nTn la
Don’t let your heart envy sinners, but rather fear Yahweh all day long.
18
מטול דתהוי לך אחריתא טבתא וסכויך לא נגמר:
ngmr la wskwyk Tbtha akhrytha lk dthhwy mTwl
Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.

שמע את ברי ואתחכם ותרץ לבך לארחא:
larkha lbk wthrts wathkhkm bry ath shme
Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path!
20
לא תהוי באלין דאסיטון בבישרא ובאלין דרוין חמרא:
khmra drwyn wbalyn bbyshra dasyTwn balyn thhwy la
Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat;
21
מטול דרוי ואסיט מתמסכן ובזעתא נלבש ניומא:
nywma nlbsh wbzetha mthmskn wasyT drwy mTwl
for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
22
קבל מן אבוך דין ילדך ולא תשוט מטול דסיבת אמך:
amk dsybth mTwl thshwT wla yldk dyn abwk mn qbl
Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.

קושטא קני ולא תזבין חכמתא ומרדותא וביונא:
wbywna wmrdwtha khkmtha thzbyn wla qny qwshTa
Buy the truth, and don’t sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.
24
מדוץ נדוץ אבוי דצדיקא ומן דמוליד חכימא נחדי ביה:
byh nkhdy khkyma dmwlyd wmn dtsdyqa abwy ndwts mdwts
The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.
25
יחדי אבוך ואמך ותדוץ תולדתך:
thwldthk wthdwts wamk abwk ykhdy
Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice!

הב לי ברי לבך ועינך תנטרן ארחתי:
arkhthy thnTrn weynk lbk bry ly hb
My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.
27
מטול דגומצא עמיקא זניתא ובירא דעקא נוכריתא:
nwkrytha deqa wbyra znytha emyqa dgwmtsa mTwl
For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well.

והיך מטרף עינהא כמנא וצאר אבנא שברי:
shbry abna wtsar kmna eynha mTrp whyk
Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men.

למן וי למן דיוא ולמן תגרי ולמן שוחא ולמן פודעתא מגן ולמן סומקנות עינוי:
eynwy swmqnwth wlmn mgn pwdetha wlmn shwkha wlmn thgry wlmn dywa lmn wy lmn
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?

להלין דמוחרין על חמרא ואזלין ומעקבי בית מזגא:
mzga byth wmeqby wazlyn khmra el dmwkhryn lhlyn
Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine.

לא תחמי חמרא דסימוק ויהב בכסא עיניה ומהלך תריצאית:
thrytsayth wmhlk eynyh bksa wyhb dsymwq khmra thkhmy la
Don’t look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.
32
ואחריתא היך חויא נכת וכחורמנא דפריח:
dprykh wkkhwrmna nkth khwya hyk wakhrytha
In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper.
33
ויחורון עינך בנכריתא ולבך ימלל תהפוכתא:
thhpwktha ymll wlbk bnkrytha eynk wykhwrwn
Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things.

ותהוי היך דשכב בלביה דימא והיך מלחא דדמך באלפא:
balpa ddmk mlkha whyk dyma blbyh dshkb hyk wthhwy
Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the middle of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging:
