ממקנא הוא חמרא ורויתא שכרא וכל דשגי ביה לא נתחכם:
nthkhkm la byh dshgy wkl shkra wrwytha khmra hwa mmqna
Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

נהם היך אריא אימתא דמלכא ומן דמחמית ליה חטי על נפשיה:
npshyh el khTy lyh dmkhmyth wmn dmlka aymtha arya hyk nhm
The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion. He who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life.

יקרא הוא לגברא דיתב דלא דינא וכל דשטי מצטדי:
mtsTdy dshTy wkl dyna dla dythb lgbra hwa yqra
It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.

מתחסד עטלא לא שתיק ושאל בחצדא ולית:
wlyth bkhtsda wshal shthyq la eTla mthkhsd
The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

מיא עמיקי עצתא בלבא דגברא וגברא דמתבין נדלינה:
ndlynh dmthbyn wgbra dgbra blba etstha emyqy mya
Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.

סוגעא דבני נשא מתקרין גברי מרחמני וגברא מהימנא מנו משכח:
mshkkh mnw mhymna wgbra mrkhmny gbry mthqryn nsha dbny swgea
Many men claim to be men of unfailing love, but who can find a faithful man?

דמהלך בתמימותיה צדיקא הוא וטוביהון לבנוהי בתרוהי:
bthrwhy lbnwhy wTwbyhwn hwa tsdyqa bthmymwthyh dmhlk
A righteous man walks in integrity. Blessed are his children after him.

מלכא דיתב על כורסיא דדינא מפזר מן קדמוהי כלהון בישתא:
byshtha klhwn qdmwhy mn mpzr ddyna kwrsya el dythb mlka
A king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.

מן דיימר זכי הוא לבי ואדכיית מחובתי:
mkhwbthy wadkyyth lby hwa zky dyymr mn
Who can say, “I have made my heart pure. I am clean and without sin”?

מתקלא ומתקלא כילא וכילא מרחקין אנון קדם אלהא אף תרויהון:
thrwyhwn ap alha qdm anwn mrkhqyn wkyla kyla wmthqla mthqla
Differing weights and differing measures, both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh.

אוף בעובדוהי מתידע טליא אין דכי ואין תריצן עובדוהי:
ewbdwhy thrytsn wayn dky ayn Tlya mthyde bewbdwhy awp
Even a child makes himself known by his doings, whether his work is pure, and whether it is right.

אדנא דשמעא ועינא דחזיא אלהא אברי תרויהון:
thrwyhwn abry alha dkhzya weyna dshmea adna
The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Yahweh has made even both of them.

לא תרחם שנתא דלמא תתמסכן פתח עינך ושבע לחמא:
lkhma wshbe eynk pthkh ththmskn dlma shntha thrkhm la
Don’t love sleep, lest you come to poverty. Open your eyes, and you shall be satisfied with bread.

חברא לחבריה נאמר דקנית והידין נשתבח ונימר:
wnymr nshthbkh whydyn dqnyth namr lkhbryh khbra
“It’s no good, it’s no good,” says the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then he boasts.

דאית דהבא וסוגעא דכיפי טבתא ומני דיקרא שפותא דידיעתא:
dydyetha shpwtha dyqra wmny Tbtha dkypy wswgea dhba dayth
There is gold and abundance of rubies, but the lips of knowledge are a rare jewel.

נסיב לבושיה מטול דעריב לחליוני ולא אפי נוכריתא משכניה:
mshknyh nwkrytha apy wla lkhlywny deryb mTwl lbwshyh nsyb
Take the garment of one who puts up collateral for a stranger; and hold him in pledge for a wayward woman.

עריב לגברא בלחמא רגלא ובתא הידין נתמלא פומיה חצצא:
khtstsa pwmyh nthmla hydyn wbtha rgla blkhma lgbra eryb
Fraudulent food is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth is filled with gravel.

מחשבתא בעצתא תתקן ובמדברנותא מתעביד קרבא:
qrba mthebyd wbmdbrnwtha ththqn betstha mkhshbtha
Plans are established by advice; by wise guidance you wage war!

דגלי רזא אכל קורצא ולמן דמשרגג בשפותיה לא תתחלט:
ththkhlT la bshpwthyh dmshrgg wlmn qwrtsa akl rza dgly
He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets; therefore don’t keep company with him who opens wide his lips.

דליט לאבוי ולאמיה נדעך שרגיה איך אתונא דחשוכא:
dkhshwka athwna ayk shrgyh ndek wlamyh labwy dlyT
Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.

ירותתא דמסרהבא בקדמתא ובסופא לא תתבריך:
ththbryk la wbswpa bqdmtha dmsrhba yrwththa
An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning won’t be blessed in the end.
22
לא תימר אשלם בישתא סכא לאלהך ויפרקנך:
wyprqnk lalhk ska byshtha ashlm thymr la
Don’t say, “I will pay back evil.” Wait for Yahweh, and he will save you.

מרחקין אנון קדם אלהא מתקלא ומתקלא ומשחתא דרמיותא לא שפיר קדמוי:
qdmwy shpyr la drmywtha wmshkhtha wmthqla mthqla alha qdm anwn mrkhqyn
Yahweh detests differing weights, and dishonest scales are not pleasing.

מן קדם יי הלכתיה דגברא ובר נשא לא מתבין ארחתיה:
arkhthyh mthbyn la nsha wbr dgbra hlkthyh yy qdm mn
A man’s steps are from Yahweh; how then can man understand his way?
25
פחא הוא לגברא דנדר לקודשא ובתר הכי חדיא ליה נפשיה:
npshyh lyh khdya hky wbthr lqwdsha dndr lgbra hwa pkha
It is a snare to a man to make a rash dedication, then later to consider his vows.

מבדר לרשיעי מלכא חכימא ומהפך עליהון גלגלא:
glgla elyhwn wmhpk khkyma mlka lrshyey mbdr
A wise king winnows out the wicked, and drives the threshing wheel over them.

שרגא דאלהא נשמתא דבני נשא ובציא כולהון גויא דכריסא:
dkrysa gwya kwlhwn wbtsya nsha dbny nshmtha dalha shrga
The spirit of man is Yahweh’s lamp, searching all his innermost parts.

חסדא וקושטא ינטרו למלכא ומתקן כורסיה בחסדא:
bkhsda kwrsyh wmthqn lmlka ynTrw wqwshTa khsda
Love and faithfulness keep the king safe. His throne is sustained by love.
29
שבהורא דעולימיא תוקפיהון ושבחא דסבי סיבתא:
sybtha dsby wshbkha thwqpyhwn dewlymya shbhwra
The glory of young men is their strength. The splendor of old men is their gray hair.
