רגתא בעי פחיה ובכל מלכנא מצטדי:
mtsTdy mlkna wbkl pkhyh bey rgtha
A man who isolates himself pursues selfishness, and defies all sound judgment.

לא צבי סכלא בסוכלתנא אלא בשטיותא פחי לביה:
lbyh pkhy bshTywtha ala bswklthna skla tsby la
A fool has no delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own opinion.

כד אתי רשיעא בשטיותא ייתי ובצערא ובחסודא:
wbkhswda wbtsera yythy bshTywtha rshyea athy kd
When wickedness comes, contempt also comes, and with shame comes disgrace.

מיא עמיקי פומיה דגברא נחלא דנביע מבוע דחכמתא:
dkhkmtha mbwe dnbye nkhla dgbra pwmyh emyqy mya
The words of a man’s mouth are like deep waters. The fountain of wisdom is like a flowing brook.

למסב אפי לרשיעא לא שפיר אף לא למצלי דינא לצדיקא:
ltsdyqa dyna lmtsly la ap shpyr la lrshyea apy lmsb
To be partial to the faces of the wicked is not good, nor to deprive the innocent of justice.

ספותיה דסכלא מיתן ליה לדינא ופומיה מסטי ליה לחרתא:
lkhrtha lyh msTy wpwmyh ldyna lyh mythn dskla spwthyh
A fool’s lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings.

פומיה דסכלא שציא הוא ליה ושפותיה פחא אנון לנפשיה:
lnpshyh anwn pkha wshpwthyh lyh hwa shtsya dskla pwmyh
A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul.

מלוי דשגושא מרכנן ליה ומחתן ליה לעומק דשיול:
dshywl lewmq lyh wmkhthn lyh mrknn dshgwsha mlwy
The words of a gossip are like dainty morsels: they go down into a person’s innermost parts.

ואף דמתרפה בעבדתיה חברא הוא לגברא מחבלנא:
mkhblna lgbra hwa khbra bebdthyh dmthrph wap
One who is slack in his work is brother to him who is a master of destruction.

מגדלא דעושנא שמיה דאלהא וביה נרהט צדיקא ונתרים ביה:
byh wnthrym tsdyqa nrhT wbyh dalha shmyh dewshna mgdla
Yahweh’s name is a strong tower: the righteous run to him, and are safe.

מזליה דעתירא קריתא דעושניה וכשורא ירום משריה:
mshryh yrwm wkshwra dewshnyh qrytha dethyra mzlyh
The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, like an unscalable wall in his own imagination.

קדם תברא יתרורם לביה דגברא וקדם יקרא ענותנותא:
enwthnwtha yqra wqdm dgbra lbyh ythrwrm thbra qdm
Before destruction the heart of man is proud, but before honor is humility.

מחזיר פתגמא עד לא שמיע שטיותא ליה ובהתתא:
wbhththa lyh shTywtha shmye la ed pthgma mkhzyr
He who answers before he hears, that is folly and shame to him.

רוחיה דגברא תסובר כרהניה ורוחא מככתא מן נטעיניה:
nTeynyh mn mkktha wrwkha krhnyh thswbr dgbra rwkhyh
A man’s spirit will sustain him in sickness, but a crushed spirit, who can bear?

לבא דמתבין נקנא ידיעתא ואדנא דחכימי תבעי מנדעא:
mndea thbey dkhkymy wadna ydyetha nqna dmthbyn lba
The heart of the discerning gets knowledge. The ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

מוהבתיה דבר נשא מרוחא ליה וקדם רברבי מקימא ליה:
lyh mqyma rbrby wqdm lyh mrwkha nsha dbr mwhbthyh
A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.
17
זכי הוה קדמאה בדיניה ואתא חבריה ונציח ליה:
lyh wntsykh khbryh watha bdynyh qdmah hwh zky
He who pleads his cause first seems right— until another comes and questions him.

תגרי מבטלא פצתא ובינת תקיפי פרשא:
prsha thqypy wbynth ptstha mbTla thgry
The lot settles disputes, and keeps strong ones apart.

אחא דמתעוי מן אחוי היך קריתא עשנתא ואחרא היך סוכרא דחוסנא:
dkhwsna swkra hyk wakhra eshntha qrytha hyk akhwy mn dmthewy akha
A brother offended is more difficult than a fortified city. Disputes are like the bars of a fortress.

מן פרי פומיה דגברא תסבע כריסיה ומן עללתא דשפותיה נסבע:
nsbe dshpwthyh elltha wmn krysyh thsbe dgbra pwmyh pry mn
A man’s stomach is filled with the fruit of his mouth. With the harvest of his lips he is satisfied.

מותא וחיי בידא דלישנא ודרחם ליה ניכול מן פרוי:
prwy mn nykwl lyh wdrkhm dlyshna byda wkhyy mwtha
Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.
22
דמשכח אתתא טבאתא משכח ומקבל רעותיה מן אלהא:
alha mn rewthyh wmqbl mshkkh Tbatha aththa dmshkkh
Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor of Yahweh.

תחנוני נמלל מסכנא ועתירא נמלל עשינתא:
eshyntha nmll wethyra mskna nmll thkhnwny
The poor plead for mercy, but the rich answer harshly.
