בר חכימא מקבל מרדותא דאבא וברא ממקנא לא מקבל בעתא:
betha mqbl la mmqna wbra daba mrdwtha mqbl khkyma br
A wise son listens to his father’s instruction, but a scoffer doesn’t listen to rebuke.

גברא מן פרי פומי נסבע טבתא ונפשהון דבזוזי תתחטף:
ththkhTp dbzwzy wnpshhwn Tbtha nsbe pwmy pry mn gbra
By the fruit of his lips, a man enjoys good things, but the unfaithful crave violence.

דנטר פומיה מזדהר בנפשיה ופתיח שפותיה סינו שציא אית ליה:
lyh ayth shtsya synw shpwthyh wpthykh bnpshyh mzdhr pwmyh dnTr
He who guards his mouth guards his soul. One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.

מתרגרגא נפשיה דעטלא מדעם ולא מיתי לה ונפשהון דתקיפי תדהן:
thdhn dthqypy wnpshhwn lh mythy wla mdem deTla npshyh mthrgrga
The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, but the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied.

מלתא דשקרא סני צדיקא ורשיעא נבהת ונחפר:
wnkhpr nbhth wrshyea tsdyqa sny dshqra mltha
A righteous man hates lies, but a wicked man brings shame and disgrace.

צדקתא תנטור לאלין דתמימין בארחתהון ורשיעא מטלטל בחטוהי:
bkhTwhy mTlTl wrshyea barkhthhwn dthmymyn lalyn thnTwr tsdqtha
Righteousness guards the way of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

אית דמעתר נפשיה ולית כל מדעם וממסכן נפשיה ומזליה סגיאה:
sgyah wmzlyh npshyh wmmskn mdem kl wlyth npshyh dmethr ayth
There are some who pretend to be rich, yet have nothing. There are some who pretend to be poor, yet have great wealth.

אית ליה פורקנא דנפשיה דגברא עותריה ומסכנא לא מקבל בעתא:
betha mqbl la wmskna ewthryh dgbra dnpshyh pwrqna lyh ayth
The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor hear no threats.

נוהרי דצדיקי נרוז ושרגא דרשיעי נדעך:
ndek drshyey wshrga nrwz dtsdyqy nwhry
The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.

לחוד בזדנותא אתיא מצותא ואלין דמתמלכין חכימי אנון:
anwn khkymy dmthmlkyn walyn mtswtha athya bzdnwtha lkhwd
Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is with people who take advice.

מזלא מן עולא דמריה יזער ודמכנש ויהב למסכנא יסני ממוניה:
mmwnyh ysny lmskna wyhb wdmknsh yzer dmryh ewla mn mzla
Wealth gained dishonestly dwindles away, but he who gathers by hand makes it grow.

מן דמשדי למעדריה טב מן דתלי בסברא ואילנא דחיי רגתא מיתא:
mytha rgtha dkhyy waylna bsbra dthly mn Tb lmedryh dmshdy mn
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when longing is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.

דבזי על מלתא נתחבל מנה ודדחל מפוקדנא משתלם טבתא:
Tbtha mshthlm mpwqdna wddkhl mnh nthkhbl mltha el dbzy
Whoever despises instruction will pay for it, but he who respects a command will be rewarded.

נימוסא דחכימא מבוע דחיי למסטי מן פחא דמותא:
dmwtha pkha mn lmsTy dkhyy mbwe dkhkyma nymwsa
The teaching of the wise is a spring of life, to turn from the snares of death.

שכלא טבא יהב חסדא וארחא תקיפא דבזוזי תיבד:
thybd dbzwzy thqypa warkha khsda yhb Tba shkla
Good understanding wins favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard.

כל ערימא עבידתיה מדעתא וסכלא פרס ליה לשטיותא:
lshTywtha lyh prs wskla mdetha ebydthyh eryma kl
Every prudent man acts from knowledge, but a fool exposes folly.

שליחא בישא יפל בבישתא ואזגדא מהימנא אסיא הוא:
hwa asya mhymna wazgda bbyshtha ypl bysha shlykha
A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy gains healing.

מסכנא ומן ליה צערא מרש מרדותא ודמזדהר במכסנותא מתיקר:
mthyqr bmksnwtha wdmzdhr mrdwtha mrsh tsera lyh wmn mskna
Poverty and shame come to him who refuses discipline, but he who heeds correction shall be honored.

רגתא דיאיא תבסם נפשא ומרחקתא דסכלי פריקא מן ידיעתא:
ydyetha mn pryqa dskly wmrkhqtha npsha thbsm dyaya rgtha
Longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil.

דמהלך עם חכימי נתחכם ודמחבר לסכלי נבאש ליה:
lyh nbash lskly wdmkhbr nthkhkm khkymy em dmhlk
One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

לחטאי תרדף בישתא וצדיקי ישתלמון טבתא:
Tbtha yshthlmwn wtsdyqy byshtha thrdp lkhTay
Misfortune pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous.

גברא טבא מורית לבני בנוהי ומתנטר לצדיקא עותריה דחטאה:
dkhTah ewthryh ltsdyqa wmthnTr bnwhy lbny mwryth Tba gbra
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored for the righteous.

רבא אכיל ארע למסכנא ואית גברא מתנגד בלא דינא:
dyna bla mthngd gbra wayth lmskna are akyl rba
An abundance of food is in poor people’s fields, but injustice sweeps it away.
24
דחשך שבטיה סני ברי ודרחם ליה מקדם ליה מרדותא:
mrdwtha lyh mqdm lyh wdrkhm bry sny shbTyh dkhshk
One who spares the rod hates his son, but one who loves him is careful to discipline him.
