מתלוי דשלמה בר דוד מלכא דישראל:
dyshral mlka dwd br dshlmh mthlwy
The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:
2
למדע חכמתא ומרדותא לאתבין אמרי ביונתא:
bywntha amry lathbyn wmrdwtha khkmtha lmde
to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding;

למקבלא מרדותא דשוכלא וצדקתא ודינא ותריצותא:
wthrytswtha wdyna wtsdqtha dshwkla mrdwtha lmqbla
to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity;

למתן לשברי ערימותא ולטלאי ידיעתא ותרעיתא:
wthreytha ydyetha wlTlay erymwtha lshbry lmthn
to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man—

ישמע חכימא ויוסיף מדעא וסוכלתנא מדברנותא יקני:
yqny mdbrnwtha wswklthna mdea wywsyp khkyma yshme
that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel;

למתבינא מתלאה ופלאתא ומילי דחכימי ואוחדתהון:
wawkhdthhwn dkhkymy wmyly wplatha mthlah lmthbyna
to understand a proverb and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.

ריש חכמתא דחלתא דיי וחכמתא ומרדותא סיכלי שיטין:
shyTyn sykly wmrdwtha wkhkmtha dyy dkhltha khkmtha rysh
The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge, but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

שמע ברי מרדותא דאבוך ולא תטעי מנימוסא דאמך:
damk mnymwsa thTey wla dabwk mrdwtha bry shme
My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching;

מטול דיאותא וחסדא אנון לרישך והמניכא לצורך:
ltswrk whmnyka lryshk anwn wkhsda dyawtha mTwl
for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.
10
ברי אין נשדלו לך חטאי לא תתפיס:
ththpys la khTay lk nshdlw ayn bry
My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.

אין יימרון אתא עמנא נכמון לדמא נטשי לזכי מגן:
mgn lzky nTshy ldma nkmwn emna atha yymrwn ayn
If they say, “Come with us. Let’s lie in wait for blood. Let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause.

נבלענון כשיול לחיי ולדלא מום היך נחתי גובא:
gwba nkhthy hyk mwm wldla lkhyy kshywl nblenwn
Let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit.
13
כל עותרא ויקרא נשכח ונמלי בתנא בזתא:
bztha bthna wnmly nshkkh wyqra ewthra kl
We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder.

פיסך ארמי בינתנא כיסא חד יהוי לכולנא:
lkwlna yhwy khd kysa bynthna army pysk
You shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse”—
15
ברי לא תיזיל בארחא עמהון מנע רגלך מן שביליהון:
shbylyhwn mn rglk mne emhwn barkha thyzyl la bry
my son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path,

מטול דרגליהון לבישתא רהטן ומסתרהבין למשפך דמא:
dma lmshpk wmsthrhbyn rhTn lbyshtha drglyhwn mTwl
for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.

מטול דמגן פריסא מצודתא על פרחתא דגפא:
dgpa prkhtha el mtswdtha prysa dmgn mTwl
For the net is spread in vain in the sight of any bird;
18
והנון לדמהון כמנן ומטשין לנפשתהון:
lnpshthhwn wmTshyn kmnn ldmhwn whnwn
but these lay in wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives.
19
היכדין אנון ארחתא דכל דעבדין עילא נפשתא דמריהון נסבין:
nsbyn dmryhwn npshtha eyla debdyn dkl arkhtha anwn hykdyn
So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.

חכמתא בשוקא משתבחא ומשקקי יהבא קלה:
qlh yhba wmshqqy mshthbkha bshwqa khkmtha
Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares.
21
בריש בירתא מכרזא ובמעלנא דתרעי בכרכי מלהא אמרה:
amrh mlha bkrky dthrey wbmelna mkrza byrtha brysh
She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words:

עד אימת שברי רחמין שברותא וממקני ממקנותא רגיגו להון וסכלי סנין ידיעתא:
ydyetha snyn wskly lhwn rgygw mmqnwtha wmmqny shbrwtha rkhmyn shbry aymth ed
“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

תתפנון למכסנותי אבע לכון רוחי ואודעינון מלי:
mly wawdeynwn rwkhy lkwn abe lmksnwthy ththpnwn
Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.

על דקרית ולא הימנתון ארימית אידי ולא אציותון:
atsywthwn wla aydy arymyth hymnthwn wla dqryth el
Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention;
25
ושנתון כל תרעיתי ומכסנותא לא אביתון:
abythwn la wmksnwtha threythy kl wshnthwn
but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;
26
אף אנא בתברכון אגחך ואדחך כד ייתי דלוחיא עליכון:
elykwn dlwkhya yythy kd wadkhk agkhk bthbrkwn ana ap
I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you,
27
כד ייתי בשליא דלוחיכון ותברכון כעלעולא ייתי כד תיתא עליכון עקתא ושנוקא:
wshnwqa eqtha elykwn thytha kd yythy kelewla wthbrkwn dlwkhykwn bshlya yythy kd
when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come on you.

הידין יקרוני ולא אענה נקרין ולא תשכחנני:
thshkkhnny wla nqryn aenh wla yqrwny hydyn
Then they will call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me,

על דסנוי ידיעתא ודחלתיה דאלהא לא אתרעו:
athrew la dalha wdkhlthyh ydyetha dsnwy el
because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.
30
לא צבו בתרעיתי ואשליאו לי כל מכסנותי:
mksnwthy kl ly washlyaw bthreythy tsbw la
They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.
31
ואכלו מן פרי דארחתהון וממלכיהון יסבעון:
ysbewn wmmlkyhwn darkhthhwn pry mn waklw
Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.

מטול דנהפכנותא דשברי תקטול אנון וטועי דסכלי תובדנון:
thwbdnwn dskly wTwey anwn thqTwl dshbry dnhpknwtha mTwl
For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them.
