1
ויתב ישראל בשטין ושרי עמא למטעי בתר בנת מואב:
mwab bnth bthr lmTey ema wshry bshTyn yshral wythb
Israel stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab;

וקרא לעמא לדבחי טעותהון ואכל עמא וסגידו לטעותהון:
lTewthhwn wsgydw ema wakl Tewthhwn ldbkhy lema wqra
for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods. The people ate and bowed down to their gods.

ואתחבר ישראל לבעלא פעור ותקף רגזא דיי בישראל:
byshral dyy rgza wthqp pewr lbela yshral wathkhbr
Israel joined himself to Baal Peor, and Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel.

ואמר יי למשה דבר ית כל רישי עמא ודון וקטול דחיב קטול קדם יי לקבל שמשא ויתוב תקוף רוגזא דיי מישראל:
myshral dyy rwgza thqwp wythwb shmsha lqbl yy qdm qTwl dkhyb wqTwl wdwn ema ryshy kl yth dbr lmshh yy wamr
Yahweh said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahweh before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel.”

ואמר משה לדיני ישראל קטולו גבר גברוהי דאתחברו לבעלא פעור:
pewr lbela dathkhbrw gbrwhy gbr qTwlw yshral ldyny mshh wamr
Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor.”

והא גברא מבני ישראל אתא וקרב לות אחוהי ית מדיניתא לעיני משה ולעיני כל כנשתא דבני ישראל ואנון בכן בתרע משכן זמנא:
zmna mshkn bthre bkn wanwn yshral dbny knshtha kl wleyny mshh leyny mdynytha yth akhwhy lwth wqrb atha yshral mbny gbra wha
Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

וחזא פינחס בר אלעזר בר אהרן כהנא וקם מגו כנשתא ונסיב רמחא בידיה:
bydyh rmkha wnsyb knshtha mgw wqm khna ahrn br alezr br pynkhs wkhza
When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the middle of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.

ועל בתר גברא בר ישראל לקובתא ובזע ית תרויהון ית גברא בר ישראל וית אתתא למעהא ואתכלי מותנא מעל בני ישראל:
yshral bny mel mwthna wathkly lmeha aththa wyth yshral br gbra yth thrwyhwn yth wbze lqwbtha yshral br gbra bthr wel
He went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel.

והוו דמיתו במותנא עשרין וארבעא אלפין:
alpyn warbea eshryn bmwthna dmythw whww
Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

פינחס בר אלעזר בר אהרן כהנא אתב ית חימתי מעל בני ישראל בדקני ית קנאתי ביניהון ולא שיציתי ית בני ישראל בקנאתי:
bqnathy yshral bny yth shytsythy wla bynyhwn qnathy yth bdqny yshral bny mel khymthy yth athb khna ahrn br alezr br pynkhs
“Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn’t consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.

בכן אמר הא אנא גזר ליה ית קימי שלם:
shlm qymy yth lyh gzr ana ha amr bkn
Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace.

ותהי ליה ולבנוהי בתרוהי קים כהנת עלם חלף די קני קדם אלהיה וכפר על בני ישראל:
yshral bny el wkpr alhyh qdm qny dy khlp elm khnth qym bthrwhy wlbnwhy lyh wthhy
It shall be to him, and to his offspring after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’”

ושום גברא בר ישראל קטילא די אתקטל עם מדיניתא זמרי בר סלוא רב בית אבא לבית שמעון:
shmewn lbyth aba byth rb slwa br zmry mdynytha em athqTl dy qTyla yshral br gbra wshwm
Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites.

ושום אתתא דאתקטילת מדינתא כזבי בת צור ריש אמי בית אבא במדין הוא:
hwa bmdyn aba byth amy rysh tswr bth kzby mdyntha dathqTylth aththa wshwm
The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur. He was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.

אעק ית מדינאי ותקטול יתהון:
ythhwn wthqTwl mdynay yth aeq
“Harass the Midianites, and strike them;

ארי מעיקין אנון לכון בנכליהון די נכילו לכון על עסק פעור ועל עסק כזבי בת רבא דמדין אחתהון דאתקטילת ביומא דמותנא על עסק פעור:
pewr esq el dmwthna bywma dathqTylth akhthhwn dmdyn rba bth kzby esq wel pewr esq el lkwn nkylw dy bnklyhwn lkwn anwn meyqyn ary
for they harassed you with their wiles, wherein they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the incident regarding Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.”
