1
וארימת כל כנשתא ויהבו ית קלהון ובכו עמא בליליא ההוא:
hhwa blylya ema wbkw qlhwn yth wyhbw knshtha kl warymth
All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2
ואתרעמו על משה ועל אהרן כל בני ישראל ואמרו להון כל כנשתא לוי דמיתנא בארעא דמצרים או במדברא הדין לוי דמיתנא:
dmythna lwy hdyn bmdbra aw dmtsrym barea dmythna lwy knshtha kl lhwn wamrw yshral bny kl ahrn wel mshh el wathremw
All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness!

ולמא יי מעל יתנא לארעא הדא למנפל בחרבא נשנא וטפלנא יהון לבזא הלא טב לנא די נתוב למצרים:
lmtsrym nthwb dy lna Tb hla lbza yhwn wTplna nshna bkhrba lmnpl hda larea ythna mel yy wlma
Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be captured or killed! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?”

ואמרו גבר לאחוהי נמני רישא ונתוב למצרים:
lmtsrym wnthwb rysha nmny lakhwhy gbr wamrw
They said to one another, “Let’s choose a leader, and let’s return into Egypt.”

ונפל משה ואהרן על אפיהון קדם כל קהל כנשתא דבני ישראל:
yshral dbny knshtha qhl kl qdm apyhwn el wahrn mshh wnpl
Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

ויהושע בר נון וכלב בר יפנה מן מאללי ית ארעא בזעו לבושיהון:
lbwshyhwn bzew area yth mally mn ypnh br wklb nwn br wyhwshe
Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes.

ואמרו לכל כנשתא דבני ישראל למימר ארעא די עברנא בה לאללא יתה טבא ארעא לחדא לחדא:
lkhda lkhda area Tba ythh lalla bh ebrna dy area lmymr yshral dbny knshtha lkl wamrw
They spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.

אם רעוא בנא קדם יי ויעל יתנא לארעא הדא ויתננה לנא ארעא די היא עבדא חלב ודבש:
wdbsh khlb ebda hya dy area lna wythnnh hda larea ythna wyel yy qdm bna rewa am
If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land which flows with milk and honey.

ברם במימרא דיי לא תמרדון ואתון לא תדחלון מן עמא דארעא ארי בידנא מסירין אנון עדא תקפהון מנהון ומימרא דיי בסעדנא לא תדחלון מנהון:
mnhwn thdkhlwn la bsedna dyy wmymra mnhwn thqphwn eda anwn msyryn bydna ary darea ema mn thdkhlwn la wathwn thmrdwn la dyy bmymra brm
Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us. Their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Don’t fear them.”

ואמרו כל כנשתא למרגם יתהון באבניא ויקרא דיי אתגלי במשכן זמנא לכל בני ישראל:
yshral bny lkl zmna bmshkn athgly dyy wyqra babnya ythhwn lmrgm knshtha kl wamrw
But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. Yahweh’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.

ואמר יי למשה עד אימתי יהון מרגזין קדמי עמא הדין ועד אימתי לא יהימנון במימרי בכל אתיא די עבדית ביניהון:
bynyhwn ebdyth dy athya bkl bmymry yhymnwn la aymthy wed hdyn ema qdmy mrgzyn yhwn aymthy ed lmshh yy wamr
Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?

אמחנון במותא ואשצנון ואעבד יתך לעם רב ותקיף מנהון:
mnhwn wthqyp rb lem ythk waebd washtsnwn bmwtha amkhnwn
I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
13
ואמר משה קדם יי וישמעון מצראי ארי אסקתא בחילך ית עמא הדין מביניהון:
mbynyhwn hdyn ema yth bkhylk asqtha ary mtsray wyshmewn yy qdm mshh wamr
Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them.

וימרון ליתב ארעא הדא דשמעו ארי את יי דשכנתך שרית בגו עמא הדין די בעיניהון חזן שכינת יקרא דיי ועננך מטל עלוהון ובעמודא דעננא את מדבר קדמיהון ביממא ובעמודא דאשתא בליליא:
blylya dashtha wbemwda bymma qdmyhwn mdbr ath denna wbemwda elwhwn mTl wennk dyy yqra shkynth khzn beynyhwn dy hdyn ema bgw shryth dshknthk yy ath ary dshmew hda area lythb wymrwn
They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are among this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

ותקטל ית עמא הדין כגברא חד וימרון עממיא די שמעו ית שמע גברתך למימר:
lmymr gbrthk shme yth shmew dy emmya wymrwn khd kgbra hdyn ema yth wthqTl
Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,

מדלית יוכלא קדם יי לאעלא ית עמא הדין לארעא די קים להון וקטלנון במדברא:
bmdbra wqTlnwn lhwn qym dy larea hdyn ema yth laela yy qdm ywkla mdlyth
‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’
17
וכען סגי כען חילא קדם יי כמא דמלילתא למימר:
lmymr dmlyltha kma yy qdm khyla ken sgy wken
Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying,
18
יי מרחק רגז ומסגי למעבד טבון שבק לעוין ולמרוד ולחובין סלח לדתיבין לאוריתיה ודלא תיבין לא מזכי מסער חובי אבהן על בנין מרדין על דר תליתאי ועל דר רביעאי:
rbyeay dr wel thlythay dr el mrdyn bnyn el abhn khwby mser mzky la thybyn wdla lawrythyh ldthybyn slkh wlkhwbyn wlmrwd lewyn shbq Tbwn lmebd wmsgy rgz mrkhq yy
‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’

שבוק כען לחובי עמא הדין כסגיאות טבותך וכמא די שבקתא לעמא הדין ממצרים ועד כען:
ken wed mmtsrym hdyn lema shbqtha dy wkma Tbwthk ksgyawth hdyn ema lkhwby ken shbwq
Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
20
ואמר יי שבקית כפתגמך:
kpthgmk shbqyth yy wamr
Yahweh said, “I have pardoned according to your word;
21
וברם קים אנא ומליא יקרא דיי ית כל ארעא:
area kl yth dyy yqra wmlya ana qym wbrm
but in very deed—as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with Yahweh’s glory—
22
ארי כל גבריא דחזו ית יקרי וית אתותי די עבדית במצרים ובמדברא ונסיאו קדמי דנן עשר זמנין ולא קבילו במימרי:
bmymry qbylw wla zmnyn eshr dnn qdmy wnsyaw wbmdbra bmtsrym ebdyth dy athwthy wyth yqry yth dkhzw gbrya kl ary
because all those men who have seen my glory and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;
23
אם יחזון ית ארעא די קימית לאבהתהון וכל דארגיזו קדמי לא יחזנה:
ykhznh la qdmy dargyzw wkl labhthhwn qymyth dy area yth ykhzwn am
surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it.

ועבדי כלב חלף דהוה רוח אוחרי עמיה ואשלם בתר דחלתי ואעלניה לארעא די על לתמן ובנוהי יתרכנה:
ythrknh wbnwhy lthmn el dy larea waelnyh dkhlthy bthr washlm emyh awkhry rwkh dhwh khlp klb webdy
But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him I will bring into the land into which he went. His offspring shall possess it.
25
ועמלקאה וכנענאה יתב במישרא מחר אתפנו וטולו לכון למדברא ארח ימא דסוף:
dswp yma arkh lmdbra lkwn wTwlw athpnw mkhr bmyshra ythb wknenah wemlqah
Since the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley, tomorrow turn and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”

ומליל יי עם משה ועם אהרן למימר:
lmymr ahrn wem mshh em yy wmlyl
Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
27
עד אימתי לכנשתא בישתא הדא די אנון מתרעמין עלי ית תרעמת בני ישראל די אנון מתרעמין עלי שמיע קדמי:
qdmy shmye ely mthremyn anwn dy yshral bny thremth yth ely mthremyn anwn dy hda byshtha lknshtha aymthy ed
“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation that complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel, which they complain against me.
28
אמר להון קים אנא אמר יי אם לא כמא די מללתון קדמי כן אעבד לכון:
lkwn aebd kn qdmy mllthwn dy kma la am yy amr ana qym lhwn amr
Tell them, ‘As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so I will do to you.
29
במדברא הדין יפלון פגריכון וכל מניניכון לכל חשבנכון מבר עשרין שנין ולעלא די אתרעמתון עלי:
ely athremthwn dy wlela shnyn eshryn mbr khshbnkwn lkl mnynykwn wkl pgrykwn yplwn hdyn bmdbra
Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have complained against me,
30
אם אתון תעלון לארעא די קימית במימרי לאשראה יתכון בה אלהן כלב בר יפנה ויהושע בר נון:
nwn br wyhwshe ypnh br klb alhn bh ythkwn lashrah bmymry qymyth dy larea thelwn athwn am
surely you shall not come into the land concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31
וטפלכון די אמרתון לבזא יהי ואעל יתהון וידעון ית ארעא די קצתון בה:
bh qtsthwn dy area yth wydewn ythhwn wael yhy lbza amrthwn dy wTplkwn
But I will bring in your little ones that you said should be captured or killed, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.
32
ופגריכון די לכון יפלון במדברא הדין:
hdyn bmdbra yplwn lkwn dy wpgrykwn
But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
33
ובניכון יהון מאחרין במדברא ארבעין שנין ויקבלון ית חוביכון עד דיסופון פגריכון במדברא:
bmdbra pgrykwn dyswpwn ed khwbykwn yth wyqblwn shnyn arbeyn bmdbra makhryn yhwn wbnykwn
Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness.
34
במנין יומיא די אללתון ית ארעא ארבעין יומין יומא לשתא יומא לשתא תקבלון ית חוביכון ארבעין שנין ותדעון ית דאתרעמתון עלי:
ely dathremthwn yth wthdewn shnyn arbeyn khwbykwn yth thqblwn lshtha ywma lshtha ywma ywmyn arbeyn area yth allthwn dy ywmya bmnyn
After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’
35
אנא יי גזרית במימרי אם לא דא אעבד לכל כנשתא בישתא הדא דאזדמנון עלי במדברא הדין יסופון ותמן ימותון:
ymwthwn wthmn yswpwn hdyn bmdbra ely dazdmnwn hda byshtha knshtha lkl aebd da la am bmymry gzryth yy ana
I, Yahweh, have spoken. I will surely do this to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”
36
וגבריא די שלח משה לאללא ית ארעא ותבו וארעימו עלוהי ית כל כנשתא לאפקא שום ביש על ארעא:
area el bysh shwm lapqa knshtha kl yth elwhy wareymw wthbw area yth lalla mshh shlkh dy wgbrya
The men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land,
37
ומיתו גבריא דאפיקו שום ביש על ארעא במותנא קדם יי:
yy qdm bmwthna area el bysh shwm dapyqw gbrya wmythw
even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh.
38
ויהושע בר נון וכלב בר יפנה אתקימו מן גבריא האנון דאזלו לאללא ית ארעא:
area yth lalla dazlw hanwn gbrya mn athqymw ypnh br wklb nwn br wyhwshe
But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.
39
ומליל משה ית פתגמיא האלין לכל בני ישראל ואתאבלו עמא לחדא:
lkhda ema wathablw yshral bny lkl halyn pthgmya yth mshh wmlyl
Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.
40
ואקדימו בצפרא וסליקו לריש טורא למימר הא אנחנא סלקין לאתרא די אמר יי ארי חבנא:
khbna ary yy amr dy lathra slqyn ankhna ha lmymr Twra lrysh wslyqw btspra waqdymw
They rose up early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised; for we have sinned.”
41
ואמר משה למא דנן אתון עברין על גזרת מימרא דיי והיא לא תצלח:
thtslkh la whya dyy mymra gzrth el ebryn athwn dnn lma mshh wamr
Moses said, “Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, since it shall not prosper?
42
לא תסקון ארי לית שכנתא דיי ביניכון ולא תתברון קדם בעלי דבביכון:
dbbykwn bely qdm ththbrwn wla bynykwn dyy shkntha lyth ary thsqwn la
Don’t go up, for Yahweh isn’t among you; that way you won’t be struck down before your enemies.
43
ארי עמלקאה וכנענאה תמן קדמיכון ותפלון בחרבא ארי על כן תבתון מבתר פלחנא דיי ולא יהי מימרא דיי בסעדכון:
bsedkwn dyy mymra yhy wla dyy plkhna mbthr thbthwn kn el ary bkhrba wthplwn qdmykwn thmn wknenah emlqah ary
For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you will fall by the sword because you turned back from following Yahweh; therefore Yahweh will not be with you.”
44
וארשעו למסק לריש טורא וארון קימא דיי ומשה לא עדו מגו משריתא:
mshrytha mgw edw la wmshh dyy qyma warwn Twra lrysh lmsq warshew
But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain. Nevertheless, the ark of Yahweh’s covenant and Moses didn’t depart out of the camp.
