ܗܝܕܝܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܡܠܠ ܥܡ ܟܢܫܐ ܘܥܡ ܬܠܡܝܕܘܗܝ

Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,

ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܥܠ ܟܘܪܣܝܐ ܕܡܘܫܐ ܝܬܒܘ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܦܪܝܫܐ
w'mr lhwn el kwrsy' dmwsh' ythbw spr' wprysh'
saying,
“The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses’ seat.

ܟܠ ܡܕܡ ܗܟܝܠ ܕܢܐܡܪܘܢ ܠܟܘܢ ܕܬܛܪܘܢ ܛܪܘ ܘܥܒܕܘ ܐܝܟ ܥܒܕܝܗܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܬܥܒܕܘܢ ܐܡܪܝܢ ܓܝܪ ܘܠܐ ܥܒܕܝܢ
kl mdm hkyl dn'mrwn lkwn dthTrwn Trw webdw 'yk ebdyhwn dyn l' thebdwn 'mryn gyr wl' ebdyn
All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.

ܘܐܣܪܝܢ ܡܘܒܠܐ ܝܩܝܪܬܐ ܘܣܝܡܝܢ ܥܠ ܟܬܦܬܐ ܕܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܒܨܒܥܗܘܢ ܠܐ ܨܒܝܢ ܕܢܩܪܒܘܢ ܠܗܝܢ
w'sryn mwbl' yqyrth' wsymyn el kthpth' dbny 'nsh' hnwn dyn btsbehwn l' tsbyn dnqrbwn lhyn
For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.

ܘܟܠܗܘܢ ܥܒܕܝܗܘܢ ܥܒܕܝܢ ܕܢܬܚܙܘܢ ܠܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ ܡܦܬܝܢ ܓܝܪ ܬܦܠܝܗܘܢ ܘܡܘܪܟܝܢ ܬܟܠܬܐ ܕܡܪܛܘܛܝܗܘܢ
wklhwn ebdyhwn ebdyn dnthkhzwn lbny 'nsh' mpthyn gyr thplyhwn wmwrkyn thklth' dmrTwTyhwn
But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries
broad, enlarge the fringes
of their garments,

ܘܪܚܡܝܢ ܪܫ ܣܡܟܐ ܒܚܫܡܝܬܐ ܘܪܫ ܡܘܬܒܐ ܒܟܢܘܫܬܐ

and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,

ܘܫܠܡܐ ܒܫܘܩܐ ܘܕܢܗܘܘܢ ܡܬܩܪܝܢ ܡܢ ܐܢܫܐ ܪܒܝ
wshlm' bshwq' wdnhwwn mthqryn mn 'nsh' rby
the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.

ܐܢܬܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܬܬܩܪܘܢ ܪܒܝ ܚܕ ܗܘ ܓܝܪ ܪܒܟܘܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܟܠܟܘܢ ܐܚܐ ܐܢܬܘܢ
'nthwn dyn l' ththqrwn rby khd hw gyr rbkwn 'nthwn dyn klkwn 'kh' 'nthwn
But don’t you be called ‘Rabbi,’ for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.

ܘܐܒܐ ܠܐ ܬܩܪܘܢ ܠܟܘܢ ܒܐܪܥܐ ܚܕ ܗܘ ܓܝܪ ܐܒܘܟܘܢ ܕܒܫܡܝܐ

Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.

ܘܠܐ ܬܬܩܪܘܢ ܡܕܒܪܢܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܚܕ ܗܘ ܡܕܒܪܢܟܘܢ ܡܫܝܚܐ
wl' ththqrwn mdbrn' mTl dkhd hw mdbrnkwn mshykh'
Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.

ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܕܪܒ ܒܟܘܢ ܢܗܘܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܡܫܡܫܢܐ
hw dyn drb bkwn nhw' lkwn mshmshn'
But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.

ܡܢ ܓܝܪ ܕܢܪܝܡ ܢܦܫܗ ܢܬܡܟܟ ܘܡܢ ܕܢܡܟ ܢܦܫܗ ܢܬܬܪܝܡ
mn gyr dnrym npshh nthmkk wmn dnmk npshh nththrym
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

ܘܝ ܠܟܘܢ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܦܪܝܫܐ ܢܣܒܝ ܒܐܦܐ ܕܐܟܠܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܒܬܐ ܕܐܪܡܠܬܐ ܒܥܠܬܐ ܕܡܘܪܟܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܨܠܘܬܟܘܢ ܡܛܠ ܗܢܐ ܬܩܒܠܘܢ ܕܝܢܐ ܝܬܝܪܐ
wy lkwn spr' wprysh' nsby b'p' d'klyn 'nthwn bth' d'rmlth' belth' dmwrkyn 'nthwn tslwthkwn mTl hn' thqblwn dyn' ythyr'
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

ܘܝ ܠܟܘܢ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܦܪܝܫܐ ܢܣܒܝ ܒܐܦܐ ܕܐܚܝܕܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܡܠܟܘܬܐ ܕܫܡܝܐ ܩܕܡ ܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܓܝܪ ܠܐ ܥܐܠܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܘܠܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܥܐܠܝܢ ܠܐ ܫܒܩܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܠܡܥܠ
wy lkwn spr' wprysh' nsby b'p' d'khydyn 'nthwn mlkwth' dshmy' qdm bny 'nsh' 'nthwn gyr l' e'lyn 'nthwn wl'ylyn de'lyn l' shbqyn 'nthwn lmel
“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter.

ܘܝ ܠܟܘܢ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܦܪܝܫܐ ܢܣܒܝ ܒܐܦܐ ܕܡܬܟܪܟܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܝܡܐ ܘܝܒܫܐ ܕܬܥܒܕܘܢ ܚܕ ܓܝܘܪܐ ܘܡܐ ܕܗܘܐ ܥܒܕܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܠܗ ܒܪܗ ܕܓܗܢܐ ܐܥܦܐ ܥܠܝܟܘܢ
wy lkwn spr' wprysh' nsby b'p' dmthkrkyn 'nthwn ym' wybsh' dthebdwn khd gywr' wm' dhw' ebdyn 'nthwn lh brh dghn' 'ep' elykwn
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna
as yourselves.

ܘܝ ܠܟܘܢ ܢܓܘܕܐ ܣܡܝܐ ܕܐܡܪܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܕܡܢ ܕܝܡܐ ܒܗܝܟܠܐ ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܡܕܡ ܡܢ ܕܝܢ ܕܝܡܐ ܒܕܗܒܐ ܕܒܗܝܟܠܐ ܚܐܒ
wy lkwn ngwd' smy' d'mryn 'nthwn dmn dym' bhykl' l' hw' mdm mn dyn dym' bdhb' dbhykl' kh'b
“Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’

ܣܟܠܐ ܘܣܡܝܐ ܡܢܐ ܓܝܪ ܪܒ ܕܗܒܐ ܐܘ ܗܝܟܠܐ ܕܗܘ ܡܩܕܫ ܠܗ ܠܕܗܒܐ

You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

ܘܡܢ ܕܝܡܐ ܒܡܕܒܚܐ ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܡܕܡ ܡܢ ܕܝܢ ܕܝܡܐ ܒܩܘܪܒܢܐ ܕܠܥܠ ܡܢܗ ܚܐܒ
wmn dym' bmdbkh' l' hw' mdm mn dyn dym' bqwrbn' dlel mnh kh'b
‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?’

ܣܟܠܐ ܘܥܘܝܪܐ ܡܢܐ ܪܒ ܩܘܪܒܢܐ ܐܘ ܡܕܒܚܐ ܕܡܩܕܫ ܠܩܘܪܒܢܐ

You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

ܡܢ ܕܝܡܐ ܗܟܝܠ ܒܡܕܒܚܐ ܝܡܐ ܒܗ ܘܒܟܠ ܡܐ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܥܠ ܡܢܗ
mn dym' hkyl bmdbkh' ym' bh wbkl m' d'yth lel mnh
He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it.

ܘܡܢ ܕܝܡܐ ܒܗܝܟܠܐ ܝܡܐ ܒܗ ܘܒܡܢ ܕܥܡܪ ܒܗ
wmn dym' bhykl' ym' bh wbmn demr bh
He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who has been living
in it.

ܘܡܢ ܕܝܡܐ ܒܫܡܝܐ ܝܡܐ ܒܟܘܪܣܝܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܘܒܡܢ ܕܝܬܒ ܠܥܠ ܡܢܗ
wmn dym' bshmy' ym' bkwrsyh d'lh' wbmn dythb lel mnh
He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.

ܘܝ ܠܟܘܢ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܦܪܝܫܐ ܢܣܒܝ ܒܐܦܐ ܕܡܥܣܪܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܢܢܥܐ ܘܫܒܬܐ ܘܟܡܘܢܐ ܘܫܒܩܬܘܢ ܝܩܝܪܬܗ ܕܢܡܘܣܐ ܕܝܢܐ ܘܚܢܢܐ ܘܗܝܡܢܘܬܐ ܗܠܝܢ ܕܝܢ ܘܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܕܬܥܒܕܘܢ ܘܗܠܝܢ ܠܐ ܬܫܒܩܘܢ

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin,
and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.

ܢܓܘܕܐ ܣܡܝܐ ܕܡܨܠܠܝܢ ܒܩܐ ܘܒܠܥܝܢ ܓܡܠܐ

You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!

ܘܝ ܠܟܘܢ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܦܪܝܫܐ ܢܣܒܝ ܒܐܦܐ ܕܡܕܟܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܒܪܗ ܕܟܣܐ ܘܕܙܒܘܪܐ ܠܓܘ ܕܝܢ ܡܠܝܢ ܚܛܘܦܝܐ ܘܥܘܠܐ
wy lkwn spr' wprysh' nsby b'p' dmdkyn 'nthwn brh dks' wdzbwr' lgw dyn mlyn khTwpy' wewl'
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness.

ܦܪܝܫܐ ܥܘܝܪܐ ܕܟܘ ܠܘܩܕܡ ܓܘܗ ܕܟܣܐ ܘܕܙܒܘܪܐ ܕܗܘܐ ܐܦ ܒܪܗܘܢ ܕܟܐ

You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.

ܘܝ ܠܟܘܢ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܦܪܝܫܐ ܢܣܒܝ ܒܐܦܐ ܕܕܡܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܠܩܒܪܐ ܡܟܠܫܐ ܕܡܢ ܠܒܪ ܡܬܚܙܝܢ ܫܦܝܪܐ ܡܢ ܠܓܘ ܕܝܢ ܡܠܝܢ ܓܪܡܐ ܕܡܝܬܐ ܘܟܠܗ ܛܢܦܘܬܐ
wy lkwn spr' wprysh' nsby b'p' ddmyn 'nthwn lqbr' mklsh' dmn lbr mthkhzyn shpyr' mn lgw dyn mlyn grm' dmyth' wklh Tnpwth'
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

ܗܟܢܐ ܐܦ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܡܢ ܠܒܪ ܡܬܚܙܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܠܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ ܐܝܟ ܙܕܝܩܐ ܘܡܢ ܠܓܘ ܡܠܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܥܘܠܐ ܘܡܣܒ ܒܐܦܐ
hkn' 'p 'nthwn mn lbr mthkhzyn 'nthwn lbny 'nsh' 'yk zdyq' wmn lgw mlyn 'nthwn ewl' wmsb b'p'
Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

ܘܝ ܠܟܘܢ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܦܪܝܫܐ ܢܣܒܝ ܒܐܦܐ ܕܒܢܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܩܒܪܐ ܕܢܒܝܐ ܘܡܨܒܬܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܒܝܬ ܩܒܘܪܐ ܕܙܕܝܩܐ
wy lkwn spr' wprysh' nsby b'p' dbnyn 'nthwn qbr' dnby' wmtsbthyn 'nthwn byth qbwr' dzdyq'
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,

ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܕܐܠܘ ܗܘܝܢ ܒܝܘܡܝ ܐܒܗܝܢ ܠܐ ܗܘܝܢ ܗܘܝܢ ܠܗܘܢ ܫܘܬܦܐ ܒܕܡܐ ܕܢܒܝܐ
w'mryn 'nthwn d'lw hwyn bywmy 'bhyn l' hwyn hwyn lhwn shwthp' bdm' dnby'
and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’

ܡܕܝܢ ܡܣܗܕܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܥܠ ܢܦܫܟܘܢ ܕܒܢܝܐ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܕܗܢܘܢ ܕܩܛܠܘ ܠܢܒܝܐ
mdyn mshdyn 'nthwn el npshkwn dbny' 'nthwn dhnwn dqTlw lnby'
Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.

ܘܐܦ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܡܠܘ ܡܫܘܚܬܐ ܕܐܒܗܝܟܘܢ
w'p 'nthwn mlw mshwkhth' d'bhykwn
Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.

ܚܘܘܬܐ ܝܠܕܐ ܕܐܟܕܢܐ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܬܥܪܩܘܢ ܡܢ ܕܝܢܐ ܕܓܗܢܐ
khwwth' yld' d'kdn' 'ykn' therqwn mn dyn' dghn'
You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna?

ܡܛܠ ܗܢܐ ܗܐ ܐܢܐ ܡܫܕܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܘܬܟܘܢ ܢܒܝܐ ܘܚܟܝܡܐ ܘܣܦܪܐ ܡܢܗܘܢ ܩܛܠܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܘܙܩܦܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܘܡܢܗܘܢ ܡܢܓܕܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܒܟܢܘܫܬܟܘܢ ܘܬܪܕܦܘܢ ܐܢܘܢ ܡܢ ܡܕܝܢܐ ܠܡܕܝܢܐ
mTl hn' h' 'n' mshdr 'n' lwthkwn nby' wkhkym' wspr' mnhwn qTlyn 'nthwn wzqpyn 'nthwn wmnhwn mngdyn 'nthwn bknwshthkwn wthrdpwn 'nwn mn mdyn' lmdyn'
Therefore behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city;

ܐܝܟܢܐ ܕܢܐܬܐ ܥܠܝܟܘܢ ܟܠܗ ܕܡܐ ܕܙܕܝܩܐ ܕܐܬܐܫܕ ܥܠ ܐܪܥܐ ܡܢ ܕܡܗ ܕܗܒܝܠ ܙܕܝܩܐ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܕܡܗ ܕܙܟܪܝܐ ܒܪ ܒܪܟܝܐ ܗܘ ܕܩܛܠܬܘܢ ܒܝܢܝ ܗܝܟܠܐ ܠܡܕܒܚܐ
'ykn' dn'th' elykwn klh dm' dzdyq' d'th'shd el 're' mn dmh dhbyl zdyq' wedm' ldmh dzkry' br brky' hw dqTlthwn byny hykl' lmdbkh'
that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.

ܐܡܝܢ ܐܡܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܕܢܐܬܝܢ ܗܠܝܢ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܥܠ ܫܪܒܬܐ ܗܕܐ
'myn 'mr 'n' lkwn dn'thyn hlyn klhyn el shrbth' hd'
Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.

ܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܩܛܠܬ ܢܒܝܐ ܘܪܓܡܬ ܠܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܫܠܝܚܝܢ ܠܘܬܗ ܟܡܐ ܙܒܢܝܢ ܨܒܝܬ ܕܐܟܢܫ ܒܢܝܟܝ ܐܝܟ ܕܟܢܫܐ ܬܪܢܓܘܠܬܐ ܦܪܘܓܝܗ ܬܚܝܬ ܓܦܝܗ ܘܠܐ ܨܒܝܬܘܢ
'wrshlm 'wrshlm qTlth nby' wrgmth l'ylyn dshlykhyn lwthh km' zbnyn tsbyth d'knsh bnyky 'yk dknsh' thrngwlth' prwgyh thkhyth gpyh wl' tsbythwn
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!

ܗܐ ܡܫܬܒܩ ܠܟܘܢ ܒܝܬܟܘܢ ܚܪܒܐ

Behold, your house is left to you desolate.

ܐܡܪܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܓܝܪ ܕܠܐ ܬܚܙܘܢܢܝ ܡܢ ܗܫܐ ܥܕܡܐ ܕܬܐܡܪܘܢ ܒܪܝܟ ܗܘ ܕܐܬܐ ܒܫܡܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ
'mrn' lkwn gyr dl' thkhzwnny mn hsh' edm' dth'mrwn bryk hw d'th' bshmh dmry'
For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
