ܘܟܢܫܘ ܠܘܬܗ ܦܪܝܫܐ ܘܣܦܪܐ ܕܐܬܘ ܡܢ ܐܘܪܫܠܡ

Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem.

ܘܚܙܘ ܐܢܫܝܢ ܡܢ ܬܠܡܝܕܘܗܝ ܕܐܟܠܝܢ ܠܚܡܐ ܟܕ ܠܐ ܡܫܓܢ ܐܝܕܝܗܘܢ ܘܐܬܥܕܠܘ
wkhzw 'nshyn mn thlmydwhy d'klyn lkhm' kd l' mshgn 'ydyhwn w'thedlw
Now when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is unwashed, hands, they found fault.

ܟܠܗܘܢ ܓܝܪ ܝܗܘܕܝܐ ܘܦܪܝܫܐ ܐܢ ܗܘ ܕܒܛܝܠܐܝܬ ܠܐ ܡܫܝܓܝܢ ܐܝܕܝܗܘܢ ܠܐ ܠܥܣܝܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܚܝܕܝܢ ܡܫܠܡܢܘܬܐ ܕܩܫܝܫܐ
klhwn gyr yhwdy' wprysh' 'n hw dbTyl'yth l' mshygyn 'ydyhwn l' lesyn mTl d'khydyn mshlmnwth' dqshysh'
(For the Pharisees and all the Jews, don’t eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders.

ܘܡܢ ܫܘܩܐ ܐܠܐ ܥܡܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܠܥܣܝܢ ܘܣܓܝܐܬܐ ܐܚܪܢܝܬܐ ܐܝܬ ܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܩܒܠܘ ܕܢܛܪܘܢ ܡܥܡܘܕܝܬܐ ܕܟܣܐ ܘܕܩܣܛܐ ܘܕܡܐܢܝ ܢܚܫܐ ܘܕܥܪܣܬܐ
wmn shwq' 'l' emdyn l' lesyn wsgy'th' 'khrnyth' 'yth 'ylyn dqblw dnTrwn memwdyth' dks' wdqsT' wdm'ny nkhsh' wdersth'
They don’t eat when they come from the marketplace unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other things, which they have received to hold to: washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.)

ܘܫܐܠܘܗܝ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܦܪܝܫܐ ܠܡܢܐ ܬܠܡܝܕܝܟ ܠܐ ܡܗܠܟܝܢ ܐܝܟ ܡܫܠܡܢܘܬܐ ܕܩܫܝܫܐ ܐܠܐ ܟܕ ܠܐ ܡܫܓܢ ܐܝܕܝܗܘܢ ܐܟܠܝܢ ܠܚܡܐ
wsh'lwhy spr' wprysh' lmn' thlmydyk l' mhlkyn 'yk mshlmnwth' dqshysh' 'l' kd l' mshgn 'ydyhwn 'klyn lkhm'
The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why don’t your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?”

ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܫܦܝܪ ܐܬܢܒܝ ܥܠܝܟܘܢ ܐܫܥܝܐ ܢܒܝܐ ܢܣܒܝ ܒܐܦܐ ܐܝܟ ܕܟܬܝܒ ܕܥܡܐ ܗܢܐ ܒܣܦܘܬܗ ܗܘ ܡܝܩܪ ܠܝ ܠܒܗܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܣܓܝ ܪܚܝܩ ܡܢܝ
hw dyn 'mr lhwn shpyr 'thnby elykwn 'shey' nby' nsby b'p' 'yk dkthyb dem' hn' bspwthh hw myqr ly lbhwn dyn sgy rkhyq mny
He answered them,
“Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,
‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me.

ܘܣܪܝܩܐܝܬ ܕܚܠܝܢ ܠܝ ܟܕ ܡܠܦܝܢ ܝܘܠܦܢܐ ܕܦܘܩܕܢܐ ܕܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ
wsryq'yth dkhlyn ly kd mlpyn ywlpn' dpwqdn' dbny 'nsh'
But they worship me in vain,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

ܫܒܩܬܘܢ ܓܝܪ ܦܘܩܕܢܐ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܘܐܚܝܕܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܡܫܠܡܢܘܬܐ ܕܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ ܡܥܡܘܕܝܬܐ ܕܟܣܐ ܘܕܩܣܛܐ ܘܣܓܝܐܬܐ ܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܠܗܠܝܢ ܕܡܝܢ
shbqthwn gyr pwqdn' d'lh' w'khydyn 'nthwn mshlmnwth' dbny 'nsh' memwdyth' dks' wdqsT' wsgy'th' 'ylyn dlhlyn dmyn
“For you set aside the commandment of God, and hold tightly to the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things.”

ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܫܦܝܪ ܛܠܡܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܦܘܩܕܢܐ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܕܬܩܝܡܘܢ ܡܫܠܡܢܘܬܟܘܢ
'mr lhwn shpyr Tlmyn 'nthwn pwqdn' d'lh' dthqymwn mshlmnwthkwn
He said to them,
“Full well do you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.

ܡܘܫܐ ܓܝܪ ܐܡܪ ܕܝܩܪ ܠܐܒܘܟ ܘܠܐܡܟ ܘܡܢ ܕܡܨܚܐ ܠܐܒܐ ܘܠܐܡܐ ܡܘܬܐ ܢܡܘܬ
mwsh' gyr 'mr dyqr l'bwk wl'mk wmn dmtskh' l'b' wl'm' mwth' nmwth
For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother;’
and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’

ܐܢܬܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܐܡܪܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܐܢ ܢܐܡܪ ܓܒܪܐ ܠܐܒܘܗܝ ܐܘ ܠܐܡܗ ܩܘܪܒܢܝ ܡܕܡ ܕܡܢܝ ܬܐܬܪ
'nthwn dyn 'mryn 'nthwn 'n n'mr gbr' l'bwhy 'w l'mh qwrbny mdm dmny th'thr
But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban,
that is to say, given to God”;’

ܘܠܐ ܫܒܩܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܠܗ ܕܢܥܒܕ ܡܕܡ ܠܐܒܘܗܝ ܐܘ ܠܐܡܗ
wl' shbqyn 'nthwn lh dnebd mdm l'bwhy 'w l'mh
then you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother,

ܘܡܣܠܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܡܠܬܐ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܡܛܠ ܡܫܠܡܢܘܬܐ ܕܐܫܠܡܬܘܢ ܘܕܕܡܝܢ ܠܗܠܝܢ ܣܓܝܐܬܐ ܥܒܕܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ
wmslyn 'nthwn mlth' d'lh' mTl mshlmnwth' d'shlmthwn wddmyn lhlyn sgy'th' ebdyn 'nthwn
making void the word of God by your tradition, which you have handed down. You do many things like this.”

ܘܩܪܐ ܝܫܘܥ ܠܟܢܫܐ ܟܠܗ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܫܘܡܥܘܢܝ ܟܠܟܘܢ ܘܐܣܬܟܠܘ
wqr' yshwe lknsh' klh w'mr lhwn shwmewny klkwn w'sthklw
He called all the multitude to himself, and said to them,
“Hear me, all of you, and understand.

ܠܝܬ ܡܕܡ ܕܠܒܪ ܡܢ ܒܪܢܫܐ ܗܘ ܘܥܐܠ ܠܗ ܕܡܫܟܚ ܡܣܝܒ ܠܗ ܐܠܐ ܡܕܡ ܕܢܦܩ ܡܢܗ ܗܘ ܗܘ ܡܣܝܒ ܠܒܪ ܐܢܫܐ
lyth mdm dlbr mn brnsh' hw we'l lh dmshkkh msyb lh 'l' mdm dnpq mnh hw hw msyb lbr 'nsh'
There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.

ܡܢ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܐܕܢܐ ܕܢܫܡܥ ܢܫܡܥ
mn d'yth lh 'dn' dnshme nshme
If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”

ܟܕ ܕܝܢ ܥܠ ܝܫܘܥ ܠܒܝܬܐ ܡܢ ܟܢܫܐ ܫܐܠܘܗܝ ܬܠܡܝܕܘܗܝ ܥܠ ܡܬܠܐ ܗܘ
kd dyn el yshwe lbyth' mn knsh' sh'lwhy thlmydwhy el mthl' hw
When he had entered into a house away from the multitude, his disciples asked him about the parable.

ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܗܟܢܐ ܐܦ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܥܛܠܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܠܐ ܝܕܥܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܕܟܠ ܡܕܡ ܕܡܢ ܠܒܪ ܥܐܠ ܠܒܪ ܐܢܫܐ ܠܐ ܡܫܟܚ ܡܣܝܒ ܠܗ
'mr lhwn hkn' 'p 'nthwn eTlyn 'nthwn l' ydeyn 'nthwn dkl mdm dmn lbr e'l lbr 'nsh' l' mshkkh msyb lh
He said to them,
“Are you also without understanding? Don’t you perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside can’t defile him,

ܕܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܠܠܒܗ ܥܐܠ ܐܠܐ ܠܟܪܣܗ ܘܡܫܬܕܐ ܒܬܕܟܝܬܐ ܕܡܕܟܝܐ ܟܠܗ ܡܐܟܘܠܬܐ
dl' hw' llbh e'l 'l' lkrsh wmshthd' bthdkyth' dmdky' klh m'kwlth'
because it doesn’t go into his heart, but into his stomach, then into the latrine, thus purifying all foods?”

ܡܕܡ ܕܝܢ ܕܢܦܩ ܡܢ ܒܪܢܫܐ ܗܘ ܗܘ ܡܣܝܒ ܠܒܪ ܐܢܫܐ
mdm dyn dnpq mn brnsh' hw hw msyb lbr 'nsh'
He said,
“That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man.

ܡܢ ܠܓܘ ܓܝܪ ܡܢ ܠܒܐ ܕܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ ܢܦܩܢ ܡܚܫܒܬܐ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܓܘܪܐ ܙܢܝܘܬܐ ܓܢܒܘܬܐ ܩܛܠܐ
mn lgw gyr mn lb' dbny 'nsh' npqn mkhshbth' byshth' gwr' znywth' gnbwth' qTl'
For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts,

ܥܠܘܒܘܬܐ ܒܝܫܘܬܐ ܢܟܠܐ ܨܚܢܘܬܐ ܥܝܢܐ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܓܘܕܦܐ ܫܒܗܪܢܘܬܐ ܫܛܝܘܬܐ
elwbwth' byshwth' nkl' tskhnwth' eyn' byshth' gwdp' shbhrnwth' shTywth'
covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.

ܗܠܝܢ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܡܢ ܠܓܘ ܗܘ ܢܦܩܢ ܘܡܣܝܒܢ ܠܗ ܠܒܪܢܫܐ
hlyn klhyn byshth' mn lgw hw npqn wmsybn lh lbrnsh'
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”

ܡܢ ܬܡܢ ܩܡ ܝܫܘܥ ܘܐܬܐ ܠܬܚܘܡܐ ܕܨܘܪ ܘܕܨܝܕܢ ܘܥܠ ܠܒܝܬܐ ܚܕ ܘܠܐ ܨܒܐ ܗܘܐ ܕܐܢܫ ܢܕܥ ܒܗ ܘܠܐ ܐܫܟܚ ܕܢܛܫܐ
mn thmn qm yshwe w'th' lthkhwm' dtswr wdtsydn wel lbyth' khd wl' tsb' hw' d'nsh nde bh wl' 'shkkh dnTsh'
From there he arose, and went away into the borders of Tyre and Sidon. He entered into a house, and didn’t want anyone to know it, but he couldn’t escape notice.

ܡܚܕܐ ܓܝܪ ܫܡܥܬ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܚܕܐ ܡܛܠܬܗ ܕܐܝܬ ܗܘܬ ܠܒܪܬܗ ܪܘܚܐ ܛܢܦܬܐ ܘܐܬܬ ܢܦܠܬ ܩܕܡ ܪܓܠܘܗܝ
mkhd' gyr shmeth 'nthth' khd' mTlthh d'yth hwth lbrthh rwkh' Tnpth' w'thth nplth qdm rglwhy
For a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell down at his feet.

ܗܝ ܕܝܢ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܐܝܬܝܗ ܗܘܬ ܚܢܦܬܐ ܡܢ ܦܘܢܝܩܐ ܕܣܘܪܝܐ ܘܒܥܝܐ ܗܘܬ ܡܢܗ ܕܢܦܩ ܫܐܕܐ ܡܢ ܒܪܬܗ
hy dyn 'nthth' 'ythyh hwth khnpth' mn pwnyq' dswry' wbey' hwth mnh dnpq sh'd' mn brthh
Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by race. She begged him that he would cast the demon out of her daughter.

ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܝܫܘܥ ܫܒܘܩܝ ܠܘܩܕܡ ܕܢܣܒܥܘܢ ܒܢܝܐ ܠܐ ܗܘܬ ܓܝܪ ܫܦܝܪܐ ܕܢܣܒ ܠܚܡܐ ܕܒܢܝܐ ܘܢܪܡܐ ܠܟܠܒܐ
w'mr lh yshwe shbwqy lwqdm dnsbewn bny' l' hwth gyr shpyr' dnsb lkhm' dbny' wnrm' lklb'
But Jesus said to her,
“Let the children be filled first, for it is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

ܗܝ ܕܝܢ ܥܢܬ ܘܐܡܪܐ ܠܗ ܐܝܢ ܡܪܝ ܐܦ ܟܠܒܐ ܡܢ ܬܚܝܬ ܦܬܘܪܐ ܐܟܠܝܢ ܦܪܬܘܬܐ ܕܒܢܝܐ
hy dyn enth w'mr' lh 'yn mry 'p klb' mn thkhyth pthwr' 'klyn prthwth' dbny'
But she answered him, “Yes, Lord. Yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

ܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܝܫܘܥ ܙܠܝ ܡܛܠ ܗܕܐ ܡܠܬܐ ܢܦܩ ܠܗ ܫܐܕܐ ܡܢ ܒܪܬܟܝ
'mr lh yshwe zly mTl hd' mlth' npq lh sh'd' mn brthky
He said to her,
“For this saying, go your way. The demon has gone out of your daughter.”

ܘܐܙܠܬ ܠܒܝܬܗ ܘܐܫܟܚܬ ܒܪܬܗ ܟܕ ܪܡܝܐ ܒܥܪܣܐ ܘܢܦܝܩ ܡܢܗ ܫܐܕܗ
w'zlth lbythh w'shkkhth brthh kd rmy' bers' wnpyq mnh sh'dh
She went away to her house, and found the child having been laid on the bed, with the demon gone out.

ܬܘܒ ܢܦܩ ܝܫܘܥ ܡܢ ܬܚܘܡܐ ܕܨܘܪ ܘܕܨܝܕܢ ܘܐܬܐ ܠܝܡܐ ܕܓܠܝܠܐ ܒܬܚܘܡܐ ܕܥܣܪܬ-ܡܕܝܢܬܐ
thwb npq yshwe mn thkhwm' dtswr wdtsydn w'th' lym' dglyl' bthkhwm' desrth-mdynth'
Again he departed from the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and came to the sea of Galilee, through the middle of the region of Decapolis.

ܘܐܝܬܝܘ ܠܗ ܚܪܫܐ ܚܕ ܦܐܩܐ ܘܒܥܐ ܗܘܘ ܡܢܗ ܕܢܣܝܡ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܐܝܕܐ
w'ythyw lh khrsh' khd p'q' wbe' hww mnh dnsym elwhy 'yd'
They brought to him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech. They begged him to lay his hand on him.

ܘܢܓܕܗ ܡܢ ܟܢܫܐ ܒܠܚܘܕܘܗܝ ܘܐܪܡܝ ܨܒܥܬܗ ܒܐܕܢܘܗܝ ܘܪܩ ܘܩܪܒ ܠܠܫܢܗ
wngdh mn knsh' blkhwdwhy w'rmy tsbethh b'dnwhy wrq wqrb llshnh
He took him aside from the multitude, privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue.

ܘܚܪ ܒܫܡܝܐ ܘܐܬܬܢܚ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܐܬܦܬܚ
wkhr bshmy' w'ththnkh w'mr lh 'thpthkh
Looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him,
“Ephphatha!”
that is,
“Be opened!”

ܘܒܗ ܒܫܥܬܐ ܐܬܦܬܚ ܐܕܢܘܗܝ ܘܐܫܬܪܝ ܐܣܪܐ ܕܠܫܢܗ ܘܡܠܠ ܦܫܝܩܐܝܬ
wbh bsheth' 'thpthkh 'dnwhy w'shthry 'sr' dlshnh wmll pshyq'yth
Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was released, and he spoke clearly.

ܘܙܗܪ ܐܢܘܢ ܕܠܐܢܫ ܠܐ ܢܐܡܪܘܢ ܘܟܡܐ ܕܗܘ ܡܙܗܪ ܗܘܐ ܠܗܘܢ ܗܢܘܢ ܝܬܝܪ ܡܟܪܙܝܢ ܗܘܘ
wzhr 'nwn dl'nsh l' n'mrwn wkm' dhw mzhr hw' lhwn hnwn ythyr mkrzyn hww
He commanded them that they should tell no one, but the more he commanded them, so much the more widely they proclaimed it.

ܘܝܬܝܪܐܝܬ ܡܬܕܡܪܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܕܟܠ ܡܕܡ ܫܦܝܪ ܥܒܕ ܠܚܪܫܐ ܥܒܕ ܕܢܫܡܥܘܢ ܘܕܠܐ ܡܡܠܠܝܢ ܕܢܡܠܠܘܢ
wythyr'yth mthdmryn hww w'mryn dkl mdm shpyr ebd lkhrsh' ebd dnshmewn wdl' mmllyn dnmllwn
They were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes even the deaf hear, and the mute speak!”
