ܘܗܘܐ ܒܚܕ ܡܢ ܝܘܡܬܐ ܟܕ ܡܠܦ ܒܗܝܟܠܐ ܠܥܡܐ ܘܡܣܒܪ ܩܡܘ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܪܒܝ ܟܗܢܐ ܘܣܦܪܐ ܥܡ ܩܫܝܫܐ

On one of those days, as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the Good News, the
priests and scribes came to him with the elders.

ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܗ ܐܡܪ ܠܢ ܒܐܝܢܐ ܫܘܠܛܢܐ ܗܠܝܢ ܥܒܕ ܐܢܬ ܘܡܢܘ ܗܘ ܕܝܗܒ ܠܟ ܫܘܠܛܢܐ ܗܢܐ

They asked him, “Tell us: by what authority do you do these things? Or who is giving you this authority?”

ܥܢܐ ܝܫܘܥ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܐܫܐܠܟܘܢ ܐܦ ܐܢܐ ܡܠܬܐ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܝ
en' yshwe w'mr lhwn 'sh'lkwn 'p 'n' mlth' w'mrw ly
He answered them,
“I also will ask you one question. Tell me:

ܡܥܡܘܕܝܬܗ ܕܝܘܚܢܢ ܡܢ ܫܡܝܐ ܗܘܬ ܐܘ ܡܢ ܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ
memwdythh dywkhnn mn shmy' hwth 'w mn bny 'nsh'
the baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men?”

ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܡܬܚܫܒܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܒܢܦܫܗܘܢ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܕܐܢ ܢܐܡܪ ܡܢ ܫܡܝܐ ܐܡܪ ܠܢ ܘܡܛܠ ܡܢܐ ܠܐ ܗܝܡܢܬܘܢܝܗܝ
hnwn dyn mthkhshbyn hww bnpshhwn w'mryn d'n n'mr mn shmy' 'mr ln wmTl mn' l' hymnthwnyhy
They reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’

ܐܢ ܕܝܢ ܢܐܡܪ ܡܢ ܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ ܪܓܡ ܠܢ ܥܡܐ ܟܠܗ ܡܦܣܝܢ ܓܝܪ ܕܝܘܚܢܢ ܢܒܝܐ ܗܘ
'n dyn n'mr mn bny 'nsh' rgm ln em' klh mpsyn gyr dywkhnn nby' hw
But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”

ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܕܠܐ ܝܕܥܝܢܢ ܡܢ ܐܝܡܟܐ ܗܝ
w'mrw lh dl' ydeynn mn 'ymk' hy
They answered that they didn’t know where it was from.

ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܘܠܐ ܐܢܐ ܐܡܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܒܐܝܢܐ ܫܘܠܛܢܐ ܗܠܝܢ ܥܒܕ ܐܢܐ
'mr lhwn yshwe wl' 'n' 'mr 'n' lkwn b'yn' shwlTn' hlyn ebd 'n'
Jesus said to them,
“Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

ܘܫܪܝ ܕܢܐܡܪ ܠܥܡܐ ܡܬܠܐ ܗܢܐ ܓܒܪܐ ܚܕ ܢܨܒ ܟܪܡܐ ܘܐܘܚܕܗ ܠܦܠܚܐ ܘܐܒܥܕ ܙܒܢܐ ܣܓܝܐܐ
wshry dn'mr lem' mthl' hn' gbr' khd ntsb krm' w'wkhdh lplkh' w'bed zbn' sgy''
He began to tell the people this parable.
“A
man planted a vineyard, and rented it out to some farmers, and went into another country for a long time.

ܘܒܙܒܢܐ ܫܕܪ ܥܒܕܗ ܠܘܬ ܦܠܚܐ ܕܢܬܠܘܢ ܠܗ ܡܢ ܦܐܪܐ ܕܟܪܡܐ ܦܠܚܐ ܕܝܢ ܡܚܐܘܗܝ ܘܫܕܪܘܗܝ ܟܕ ܣܪܝܩ
wbzbn' shdr ebdh lwth plkh' dnthlwn lh mn p'r' dkrm' plkh' dyn mkh'why wshdrwhy kd sryq
At the proper season, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him, and sent him away empty.

ܘܐܘܣܦ ܘܫܕܪ ܠܥܒܕܗ ܐܚܪܢܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܐܦ ܠܗܘ ܡܚܐܘܗܝ ܘܨܥܪܘܗܝ ܘܫܕܪܘܗܝ ܟܕ ܣܪܝܩ

He sent yet another servant, and they also beat him, and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

ܘܐܘܣܦ ܘܫܕܪ ܕܬܠܬܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܘܐܦ ܠܗܘ ܨܠܦܘܗܝ ܘܐܦܩܘܗܝ

He sent yet a third, and they also wounded him, and threw him out.

ܐܡܪ ܡܪܐ ܟܪܡܐ ܡܢܐ ܐܥܒܕ ܐܫܕܪ ܒܪܝ ܚܒܝܒܐ ܟܒܪ ܢܚܙܘܢܝܗܝ ܘܢܬܟܚܕܘܢ
'mr mr' krm' mn' 'ebd 'shdr bry khbyb' kbr nkhzwnyhy wnthkkhdwn
The lord of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be that seeing him, they will respect him.’

ܟܕ ܚܙܐܘܗܝ ܕܝܢ ܦܠܚܐ ܡܬܚܫܒܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܒܢܦܫܗܘܢ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܗܢܘ ܝܪܬܐ ܬܘ ܢܩܛܠܝܘܗܝ ܘܬܗܘܐ ܝܪܬܘܬܐ ܕܝܠܢ

“But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’

ܘܐܦܩܘܗܝ ܠܒܪ ܡܢ ܟܪܡܐ ܘܩܛܠܘܗܝ ܡܢܐ ܗܟܝܠ ܢܥܒܕ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܪܐ ܟܪܡܐ
w'pqwhy lbr mn krm' wqTlwhy mn' hkyl nebd lhwn mr' krm'
They threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?

ܢܐܬܐ ܘܢܘܒܕ ܠܦܠܚܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܘܢܬܠ ܟܪܡܐ ܠܐܚܪܢܐ ܟܕ ܫܡܥܘ ܕܝܢ ܐܡܪܘ ܠܐ ܬܗܘܐ ܗܕܐ

He will come and destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.”
When they heard it, they said, “May it never be!”

ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܚܪ ܒܗܘܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܘܡܢܐ ܗܝ ܗܝ ܕܟܬܝܒܐ ܕܟܐܦܐ ܕܐܣܠܝܘ ܒܢܝܐ ܗܝ ܗܘܬ ܠܪܝܫ ܩܪܢܐ ܕܙܘܝܬܐ
hw dyn khr bhwn w'mr wmn' hy hy dkthyb' dk'p' d'slyw bny' hy hwth lrysh qrn' dzwyth'
But he looked at them, and said,
“Then what is this that is written,
‘The stone which the builders rejected,
the same was made the chief cornerstone?’

ܘܟܠ ܕܢܦܠ ܥܠ ܗܝ ܟܐܦܐ ܢܬܪܥܥ ܘܟܠ ܡܢ ܕܗܝ ܬܦܠ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܬܕܪܝܘܗܝ

Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces,
but it will crush whomever it falls on to dust.”

ܒܥܘ ܗܘܘ ܕܝܢ ܪܒܝ ܟܗܢܐ ܘܣܦܪܐ ܕܢܪܡܘܢ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܐܝܕܝܐ ܒܗܝ ܫܥܬܐ ܘܕܚܠܘ ܡܢ ܥܡܐ ܝܕܥܘ ܓܝܪ ܕܥܠܝܗܘܢ ܐܡܪ ܡܬܠܐ ܗܢܐ
bew hww dyn rby khn' wspr' dnrmwn elwhy 'ydy' bhy sheth' wdkhlw mn em' ydew gyr delyhwn 'mr mthl' hn'
The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him that very hour, but they feared the people—for they knew he had spoken this parable against them.

ܘܫܕܪܘ ܠܘܬܗ ܓܫܘܫܐ ܕܡܬܕܡܝܢ ܒܙܕܝܩܐ ܕܢܐܚܕܘܢܝܗܝ ܒܡܠܬܐ ܘܢܫܠܡܘܢܝܗܝ ܠܕܝܢܐ ܘܠܫܘܠܛܢܗ ܕܗܓܡܘܢܐ
wshdrw lwthh gshwsh' dmthdmyn bzdyq' dn'khdwnyhy bmlth' wnshlmwnyhy ldyn' wlshwlTnh dhgmwn'
They watched him, and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.

ܘܫܐܠܘܗܝ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܗ ܡܠܦܢܐ ܝܕܥܝܢܢ ܕܬܪܝܨܐܝܬ ܡܡܠܠ ܐܢܬ ܘܡܠܦ ܘܠܐ ܢܣܒ ܐܢܬ ܒܐܦܐ ܐܠܐ ܒܩܘܫܬܐ ܐܘܪܚܐ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܡܠܦ ܐܢܬ
wsh'lwhy w'mryn lh mlpn' ydeynn dthryts'yth mmll 'nth wmlp wl' nsb 'nth b'p' 'l' bqwshth' 'wrkh' d'lh' mlp 'nth
They asked him, “Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and aren’t partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.

ܫܠܝܛ ܠܢ ܕܢܬܠ ܟܣܦ ܪܫܐ ܠܩܣܪ ܐܘ ܠܐ

Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”

ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܐܣܬܟܠ ܚܪܥܘܬܗܘܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܡܢܐ ܡܢܣܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܠܝ
hw dyn 'sthkl khrewthhwn w'mr mn' mnsyn 'nthwn ly
But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them,
“Why do you test me?

ܚܘܐܘܢܝ ܕܝܢܪܐ ܕܡܢ ܐܝܬ ܒܗ ܨܠܡܐ ܘܟܬܝܒܬܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܐܡܪܘ ܕܩܣܪ
khw'wny dynr' dmn 'yth bh tslm' wkthybth' hnwn dyn 'mrw dqsr
Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”
They answered, “Caesar’s.”

ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܗܒܘ ܗܟܝܠ ܕܩܣܪ ܠܩܣܪ ܘܕܐܠܗܐ ܠܐܠܗܐ
'mr lhwn yshwe hbw hkyl dqsr lqsr wd'lh' l'lh'
He said to them,
“Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

ܘܠܐ ܐܫܟܚܘ ܠܡܐܚܕ ܡܢܗ ܡܠܬܐ ܩܕܡ ܥܡܐ ܘܐܬܕܡܪܘ ܥܠ ܦܬܓܡܗ ܘܫܬܩܘ
wl' 'shkkhw lm'khd mnh mlth' qdm em' w'thdmrw el pthgmh wshthqw
They weren’t able to trap him in his words before the people. They marveled at his answer, and were silent.

ܩܪܒܘ ܕܝܢ ܐܢܫܝܢ ܡܢ ܙܕܘܩܝܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܐܡܪܝܢ ܕܩܝܡܬܐ ܠܝܬ ܘܫܐܠܘܗܝ
qrbw dyn 'nshyn mn zdwqy' hnwn d'mryn dqymth' lyth wsh'lwhy
Some of the Sadducees came to him, those who deny that there is a resurrection.

ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܗ ܡܠܦܢܐ ܡܘܫܐ ܟܬܒ ܠܢ ܕܐܢ ܐܢܫ ܢܡܘܬ ܐܚܘܗܝ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܕܠܐ ܒܢܝܐ ܢܣܒ ܐܚܘܗܝ ܐܢܬܬܗ ܘܢܩܝܡ ܙܪܥܐ ܠܐܚܘܗܝ

They asked him, “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up children for his brother.

ܫܒܥܐ ܕܝܢ ܐܚܝܢ ܐܝܬ ܗܘܘ ܩܕܡܝܐ ܢܣܒ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܘܡܝܬ ܕܠܐ ܒܢܝܐ

There were therefore seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died childless.

ܘܢܣܒܗ ܕܬܪܝܢ ܠܐܢܬܬܗ ܘܗܢܐ ܡܝܬ ܕܠܐ ܒܢܝܐ

The second took her as wife, and he died childless.

ܘܕܬܠܬܐ ܬܘܒ ܢܣܒܗ ܘܗܟܘܬ ܘܐܦ ܫܒܥܬܝܗܘܢ ܘܡܝܬܘ ܘܠܐ ܫܒܩܘ ܒܢܝܐ
wdthlth' thwb nsbh whkwth w'p shbethyhwn wmythw wl' shbqw bny'
The third took her, and likewise the seven all left no children, and died.

ܒܩܝܡܬܐ ܗܟܝܠ ܕܐܝܢܐ ܡܢܗܘܢ ܬܗܘܐ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܫܒܥܬܝܗܘܢ ܓܝܪ ܢܣܒܘܗ
bqymth' hkyl d'yn' mnhwn thhw' 'nthth' shbethyhwn gyr nsbwh
Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them will she be? For the seven had her as a wife.”

ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܒܢܘܗܝ ܕܥܠܡܐ ܗܢܐ ܢܣܒܝܢ ܢܫܐ ܘܢܫܐ ܗܘܝܢ ܠܓܒܪܐ
'mr lhwn yshwe bnwhy delm' hn' nsbyn nsh' wnsh' hwyn lgbr'
Jesus said to them,
“The children of this age marry, and are given in marriage.

ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܕܠܗܘ ܥܠܡܐ ܫܘܘ ܘܠܩܝܡܬܐ ܕܡܢ ܒܝܬ ܡܝܬܐ ܠܐ ܢܣܒܝܢ ܢܫܐ ܘܐܦ ܠܐ ܢܫܐ ܗܘܝܢ ܠܓܒܪܐ
hnwn dyn dlhw elm' shww wlqymth' dmn byth myth' l' nsbyn nsh' w'p l' nsh' hwyn lgbr'
But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage.

ܐܦܠܐ ܓܝܪ ܬܘܒ ܠܡܡܬ ܡܫܟܚܝܢ ܐܝܟ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܐܢܘܢ ܓܝܪ ܘܒܢܝܐ ܐܝܬܝܗܘܢ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܗܘܘ ܒܢܝܐ ܕܩܝܡܬܐ
'pl' gyr thwb lmmth mshkkhyn 'yk ml'k' 'nwn gyr wbny' 'ythyhwn d'lh' mTl dhww bny' dqymth'
For they can’t die any more, for they are like the angels, and are children of God, being children of the resurrection.

ܕܩܝܡܝܢ ܕܝܢ ܡܝܬܐ ܐܦ ܡܘܫܐ ܒܕܩ ܐܕܟܪ ܓܝܪ ܒܣܢܝܐ ܟܕ ܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܗ ܕܐܒܪܗܡ ܘܐܠܗܗ ܕܐܝܣܚܩ ܘܐܠܗܗ ܕܝܥܩܘܒ
dqymyn dyn myth' 'p mwsh' bdq 'dkr gyr bsny' kd 'mr mry' 'lhh d'brhm w'lhh d'yskhq w'lhh dyeqwb
But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called the Lord ‘The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’

ܐܠܗܐ ܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܕܡܝܬܐ ܐܠܐ ܕܚܝܐ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܓܝܪ ܚܝܝܢ ܐܢܘܢ ܠܗ
'lh' dyn l' hw' dmyth' 'l' dkhy' klhwn gyr khyyn 'nwn lh
Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him.”

ܘܥܢܘ ܐܢܫܝܢ ܡܢ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܗ ܡܠܦܢܐ ܫܦܝܪ ܐܡܪ ܐܢܬ
wenw 'nshyn mn spr' w'mryn lh mlpn' shpyr 'mr 'nth
Some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you speak well.”

ܘܠܐ ܬܘܒ ܐܡܪܚܘ ܠܡܫܐܠܘܬܗ ܥܠ ܡܕܡ
wl' thwb 'mrkhw lmsh'lwthh el mdm
They didn’t dare to ask him any more questions.

ܘܐܡܪ ܗܘܐ ܠܗܘܢ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܐܡܪܝܢ ܣܦܪܐ ܥܠ ܡܫܝܚܐ ܕܒܪܗ ܗܘ ܕܕܘܝܕ
w'mr hw' lhwn 'ykn' 'mryn spr' el mshykh' dbrh hw ddwyd
He said to them,
“Why do they say that the Christ is David’s son?

ܘܗܘ ܕܘܝܕ ܐܡܪ ܒܟܬܒܐ ܕܡܙܡܘܪܐ ܕܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܠܡܪܝ ܬܒ ܠܟ ܡܢ ܝܡܝܢܝ

David himself says in the book of Psalms,
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,

ܥܕܡܐ ܕܐܣܝܡ ܒܥܠܕܒܒܝܟ ܬܚܝܬ ܪܓܠܝܟ
edm' d'sym beldbbyk thkhyth rglyk
until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet.”’

ܐܢ ܗܟܝܠ ܕܘܝܕ ܡܪܝ ܩܪܐ ܠܗ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܒܪܗ ܗܘ
'n hkyl dwyd mry qr' lh 'ykn' brh hw
“David therefore calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”

ܘܟܕ ܟܠܗ ܥܡܐ ܫܡܥ ܗܘܐ ܐܡܪ ܠܬܠܡܝܕܘܗܝ
wkd klh em' shme hw' 'mr lthlmydwhy
In the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples,

ܐܙܕܗܪܘ ܡܢ ܣܦܪܐ ܕܨܒܝܢ ܠܡܗܠܟܘ ܒܐܣܛܠܐ ܘܪܚܡܝܢ ܫܠܡܐ ܒܫܘܩܐ ܘܪܝܫ ܡܘܬܒܐ ܒܟܢܘܫܬܐ ܘܪܝܫ ܣܡܟܐ ܒܐܚܫܡܝܬܐ
'zdhrw mn spr' dtsbyn lmhlkw b'sTl' wrkhmyn shlm' bshwq' wrysh mwthb' bknwshth' wrysh smk' b'khshmyth'
“Beware of those scribes who like to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts;

ܗܢܘܢ ܕܐܟܠܝܢ ܒܬܐ ܕܐܪܡܠܬܐ ܒܥܠܬܐ ܕܡܘܪܟܝܢ ܨܠܘܬܗܘܢ ܗܢܘܢ ܢܩܒܠܘܢ ܕܝܢܐ ܝܬܝܪܐ
hnwn d'klyn bth' d'rmlth' belth' dmwrkyn tslwthhwn hnwn nqblwn dyn' ythyr'
who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these will receive greater condemnation.”
