Now in those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.

This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.

All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city.

ܣܠܩ ܗܘܐ ܕܝܢ ܐܦ ܝܘܣܦ ܡܢ ܢܨܪܬ ܡܕܝܢܬܐ ܕܓܠܝܠܐ ܠܝܗܘܕ ܠܡܕܝܢܬܗ ܕܕܘܝܕ ܕܡܬܩܪܝܐ ܒܝܬ-ܠܚܡ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܝܬܘܗܝ ܗܘܐ ܡܢ ܒܝܬܗ ܘܡܢ ܫܪܒܬܗ ܕܕܘܝܕ

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to David’s city, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;

to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant.

ܘܗܘܐ ܕܟܕ ܬܡܢ ܐܢܘܢ ܐܬܡܠܝܘ ܝܘܡܬܗ ܕܬܐܠܕ

While they were there, the day had come for her to give birth.

ܘܝܠܕܬ ܒܪܗ ܒܘܟܪܐ ܘܟܪܟܬܗ ܒܥܙܪܘܪܐ ܘܐܪܡܝܬܗ ܒܐܘܪܝܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܠܝܬ ܗܘܐ ܠܗܘܢ ܕܘܟܬܐ ܐܝܟܐ ܕܫܪܝܢ ܗܘܘ

She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.

ܪܥܘܬܐ ܕܝܢ ܐܝܬ ܗܘܘ ܒܗ ܒܐܬܪܐ ܕܫܪܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܬܡܢ ܘܢܛܪܝܢ ܡܛܪܬܐ ܕܠܠܝܐ ܥܠ ܡܪܥܝܬܗܘܢ

There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.

ܘܗܐ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܐܬܐ ܠܘܬܗܘܢ ܘܬܫܒܘܚܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܐܢܗܪܬ ܥܠܝܗܘܢ ܘܕܚܠܘ ܕܚܠܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ

Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܠܐ ܬܕܚܠܘܢ ܗܐ ܓܝܪ ܡܣܒܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܚܕܘܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܕܬܗܘܐ ܠܟܠܗ ܥܠܡܐ

The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.

ܐܬܝܠܕ ܠܟܘܢ ܓܝܪ ܝܘܡܢܐ ܦܪܘܩܐ ܕܐܝܬܘܗܝ ܡܪܝܐ ܡܫܝܚܐ ܒܡܕܝܢܬܗ ܕܕܘܝܕ
ddwyd bmdynthh mshykh' mry' d'ythwhy prwq' ywmn' gyr lkwn 'thyld
For there is born to you today, in David’s city, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

ܘܗܕܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܐܬܐ ܡܫܟܚܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܥܘܠܐ ܕܟܪܝܟ ܒܥܙܪܘܪܐ ܘܣܝܡ ܒܐܘܪܝܐ
b'wry' wsym bezrwr' dkryk ewl' 'nthwn mshkkhyn 'th' lkwn whd'
This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough.”

ܘܡܢ ܫܠܝ ܐܬܚܙܝܘ ܥܡ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܚܝܠܘܬܐ ܣܓܝܐܐ ܕܫܡܝܐ ܟܕ ܡܫܒܚܝܢ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ

Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying,

ܬܫܒܘܚܬܐ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܒܡܪܘܡܐ ܘܥܠ ܐܪܥܐ ܫܠܡܐ ܘܣܒܪܐ ܛܒܐ ܠܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ

“Glory to God in the highest,
on earth peace, good will toward men.”

ܘܗܘܐ ܕܟܕ ܐܙܠܘ ܡܢ ܠܘܬܗܘܢ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܠܫܡܝܐ ܡܠܠܘ ܪܥܘܬܐ ܚܕ ܥܡ ܚܕ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܢܪܕܐ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܒܝܬ-ܠܚܡ ܘܢܚܙܐ ܠܡܠܬܐ ܗܕܐ ܕܗܘܬ ܐܝܟ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܐܘܕܥ ܠܢ

When the angels went away from them into the sky, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

ܘܐܬܘ ܡܣܪܗܒܐܝܬ ܘܐܫܟܚܘ ܠܡܪܝܡ ܘܠܝܘܣܦ ܘܠܥܘܠܐ ܕܣܝܡ ܒܐܘܪܝܐ

They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough.

ܘܟܕ ܚܙܘ ܐܘܕܥܘ ܠܡܠܬܐ ܕܐܬܡܠܠܬ ܥܡܗܘܢ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܥܠ ܛܠܝܐ
Tly' el elwhy emhwn d'thmllth lmlth' 'wdew khzw wkd
When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child.

ܘܟܠܗܘܢ ܕܫܡܥܘ ܐܬܕܡܪܘ ܥܠ ܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܐܬܡܠܠ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܢ ܪܥܘܬܐ

All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds.

ܡܪܝܡ ܕܝܢ ܢܛܪܐ ܗܘܬ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܡܠܐ ܗܠܝܢ ܘܡܦܚܡܐ ܒܠܒܗ
blbh wmpkhm' hlyn ml' klhyn hwth nTr' dyn mrym
But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.

ܘܗܦܟܘ ܪܥܘܬܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܟܕ ܡܫܒܚܝܢ ܘܡܗܠܠܝܢ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܥܠ ܟܠ ܕܚܙܘ ܘܫܡܥܘ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܕܐܬܡܠܠ ܥܡܗܘܢ
emhwn d'thmll 'ykn' wshmew dkhzw kl el l'lh' wmhllyn mshbkhyn kd hnwn rewth' whpkw
The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them.

ܘܟܕ ܡܠܘ ܬܡܢܝܐ ܝܘܡܝܢ ܕܢܬܓܙܪ ܛܠܝܐ ܐܬܩܪܝ ܫܡܗ ܝܫܘܥ ܕܐܬܩܪܝ ܡܢ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܩܕܡ ܕܢܬܒܛܢ ܒܟܪܣܐ

When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

ܘܟܕ ܐܬܡܠܝܘ ܝܘܡܬܐ ܕܬܕܟܝܬܗܘܢ ܐܝܟ ܢܡܘܣܐ ܕܡܘܫܐ ܐܣܩܘܗܝ ܠܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܕܢܩܝܡܘܢܝܗܝ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ

When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord

ܐܝܟ ܕܟܬܝܒ ܒܢܡܘܣܐ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܕܟܠ ܕܟܪܐ ܦܬܚ ܡܪܒܥܐ ܩܕܝܫܐ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܢܬܩܪܐ

(as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”),

ܘܕܢܬܠܘܢ ܕܒܚܬܐ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܕܐܡܝܪ ܒܢܡܘܣܐ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܙܘܓܐ ܕܫܘܦܢܝܢܐ ܐܘ ܬܪܝܢ ܦܪܘܓܐ ܕܝܘܢܐ
dywn' prwg' thryn 'w dshwpnyn' zwg' dmry' bnmws' d'myr 'ykn' dbkhth' wdnthlwn
and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”

ܓܒܪܐ ܕܝܢ ܚܕ ܐܝܬ ܗܘܐ ܒܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܫܡܗ ܗܘܐ ܫܡܥܘܢ ܘܓܒܪܐ ܗܢܐ ܟܐܝܢ ܗܘܐ ܘܙܕܝܩ ܘܡܣܟܐ ܗܘܐ ܠܒܘܝܐܗ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܪܘܚܐ ܕܩܘܕܫܐ ܐܝܬ ܗܘܬ ܥܠܘܗܝ
elwhy hwth 'yth dqwdsh' wrwkh' d'ysryl lbwy'h hw' wmsk' wzdyq hw' k'yn hn' wgbr' shmewn hw' shmh b'wrshlm hw' 'yth khd dyn gbr'
Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.

ܘܐܡܝܪ ܗܘܐ ܠܗ ܡܢ ܪܘܚܐ ܕܩܘܕܫܐ ܕܠܐ ܢܚܙܐ ܡܘܬܐ ܥܕܡܐ ܕܢܚܙܐ ܠܡܫܝܚܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ

It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

ܗܘ ܗܢܐ ܐܬܐ ܗܘܐ ܒܪܘܚܐ ܠܗܝܟܠܐ ܘܟܕ ܡܥܠܝܢ ܠܗ ܐܒܗܘܗܝ ܠܝܫܘܥ ܛܠܝܐ ܕܢܥܒܕܘܢ ܚܠܦܘܗܝ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܕܦܩܝܕ ܒܢܡܘܣܐ

He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law,

ܩܒܠܗ ܥܠ ܕܪܥܘܗܝ ܘܒܪܟ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܘܐܡܪ

then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,

ܡܟܝܠ ܫܪܐ ܐܢܬ ܠܗ ܠܥܒܕܟ ܡܪܝ ܐܝܟ ܡܠܬܟ ܒܫܠܡܐ
bshlm' mlthk 'yk mry lebdk lh 'nth shr' mkyl
“Now you are releasing your servant, Master,
according to your word, in peace;

ܗܘ ܕܛܝܒܬ ܒܦܪܨܘܦܐ ܕܟܠܗܝܢ ܐܡܘܬܐ
'mwth' dklhyn bprtswp' dTybth hw
which you have prepared before the face of all peoples;
32
ܢܘܗܪܐ ܠܓܠܝܢܐ ܕܥܡܡܐ ܘܫܘܒܚܐ ܠܥܡܟ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ
'ysryl lemk wshwbkh' demm' lglyn' nwhr'
a light for revelation to the nations,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

ܝܘܣܦ ܕܝܢ ܘܐܡܗ ܬܡܝܗܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܥܠ ܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܡܬܡܠܠܢ ܗܘܝ ܥܠܘܗܝ

Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him,

ܘܒܪܟ ܐܢܘܢ ܫܡܥܘܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܡܪܝܡ ܐܡܗ ܗܐ ܗܢܐ ܣܝܡ ܠܡܦܘܠܬܐ ܘܠܩܝܡܐ ܕܣܓܝܐܐ ܒܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܠܐܬܐ ܕܚܪܝܢܐ

and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, “Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against.

ܘܒܢܦܫܟܝ ܕܝܢ ܕܝܠܟܝ ܬܥܒܪ ܪܘܡܚܐ ܐܝܟ ܕܢܬܓܠܝܢ ܡܚܫܒܬܐ ܕܠܒܘܬܐ ܕܣܓܝܐܐ

Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

ܘܚܢܐ ܕܝܢ ܢܒܝܬܐ ܒܪܬܗ ܕܦܢܘܐܝܠ ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܐܫܝܪ ܐܦ ܗܝ ܩܫܝܫܬ ܒܝܘܡܬܗ ܗܘܬ ܘܫܒܥ ܫܢܝܢ ܥܡ ܒܥܠܗ ܚܝܬ ܡܢ ܒܬܘܠܘܬܗ

There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,

ܘܗܘܬ ܐܪܡܠܬܐ ܐܝܟ ܫܢܝܢ ܬܡܢܐܝܢ ܘܐܪܒܥ ܘܠܐ ܦܪܩܐ ܗܘܬ ܡܢ ܗܝܟܠܐ ܘܒܨܘܡܐ ܘܒܨܠܘܬܐ ܦܠܚܐ ܗܘܬ ܒܐܝܡܡܐ ܘܒܠܠܝܐ

and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn’t depart from the temple, worshiping with fastings and petitions night and day.

ܘܐܦ ܗܝ ܩܡܬ ܒܗ ܒܫܥܬܐ ܘܐܘܕܝܬ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܘܡܡܠܠܐ ܗܘܬ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܥܡ ܟܠܢܫ ܕܡܣܟܐ ܗܘܐ ܠܦܘܪܩܢܗ ܕܐܘܪܫܠܡ

Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem.

When they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth.

ܛܠܝܐ ܕܝܢ ܪܒܐ ܗܘܐ ܘܡܬܚܝܠ ܒܪܘܚܐ ܘܡܬܡܠܐ ܚܟܡܬܐ ܘܛܝܒܘܬܐ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܐܝܬ ܗܘܬ ܥܠܘܗܝ

The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

ܘܐܢܫܘܗܝ ܒܟܠ ܫܢܐ ܐܙܠܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܒܥܕܥܕܐ ܕܦܨܚܐ

His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover.

ܘܟܕ ܗܘܐ ܒܪ ܫܢܝܢ ܬܪܬܥܣܪܐ ܣܠܩܘ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܕܡܥܕܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܥܕܥܕܐ

When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast,

ܘܟܕ ܫܠܡܘ ܝܘܡܬܐ ܗܦܟܘ ܠܗܘܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܕܝܢ ܛܠܝܐ ܦܫ ܠܗ ܒܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܘܝܘܣܦ ܘܐܡܗ ܠܐ ܝܕܥܘ

and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother didn’t know it,

ܣܒܪܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܓܝܪ ܕܥܡ ܒܢܝ ܠܘܝܬܗܘܢ ܗܘ ܘܟܕ ܐܬܘ ܡܪܕܐ ܝܘܡܐ ܚܕ ܒܥܐܘܗܝ ܠܘܬ ܐܢܫܘܬܗܘܢ ܘܠܘܬ ܡܢ ܕܝܕܥ ܠܗܘܢ

but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey, and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances.

ܘܠܐ ܐܫܟܚܘܗܝ ܘܗܦܟܘ ܠܗܘܢ ܬܘܒ ܠܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܘܒܥܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܗ

When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him.

ܘܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܬܠܬܐ ܝܘܡܝܢ ܐܫܟܚܘܗܝ ܒܗܝܟܠܐ ܟܕ ܝܬܒ ܡܨܥܬ ܡܠܦܢܐ ܘܫܡܥ ܡܢܗܘܢ ܘܡܫܐܠ ܠܗܘܢ

After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions.

ܘܟܕ ܚܙܐܘܗܝ ܬܡܗܘ ܘܐܡܪܬ ܠܗ ܐܡܗ ܒܪܝ ܠܡܢܐ ܥܒܕܬ ܠܢ ܗܟܢܐ ܕܗܐ ܐܒܘܟ ܘܐܢܐ ܒܛܘܪܦܐ ܣܓܝܐܐ ܒܥܝܢ ܗܘܝܢ ܠܟ
lk hwyn beyn sgy'' bTwrp' w'n' 'bwk dh' hkn' ln ebdth lmn' bry 'mh lh w'mrth thmhw khz'why wkd
When they saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.”

ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܢܐ ܒܥܝܢ ܗܘܝܬܘܢ ܠܝ ܠܐ ܝܕܥܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܕܒܝܬ ܐܒܝ ܘܠܐ ܠܝ ܕܐܗܘܐ
d'hw' ly wl' 'by dbyth 'nthwn ydeyn l' ly hwythwn beyn mn' lhwn 'mr
He said to them,
“Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܐܫܬܘܕܥܘ ܠܡܠܬܐ ܕܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ
lhwn d'mr lmlth' 'shthwdew l' dyn hnwn
They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them.

ܘܢܚܬ ܥܡܗܘܢ ܘܐܬܐ ܠܢܨܪܬ ܘܡܫܬܥܒܕ ܗܘܐ ܠܗܘܢ ܐܡܗ ܕܝܢ ܢܛܪܐ ܗܘܬ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܡܠܐ ܒܠܒܗ

And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
