ܡܛܠ ܕܣܓܝܐܐ ܨܒܘ ܕܢܟܬܒܘܢ ܬܫܥܝܬܐ ܕܣܘܥܪܢܐ ܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܚܢܢ ܡܦܣܝܢ ܚܢܢ ܒܗܘܢ
bhwn khnn mpsyn dkhnn 'ylyn dswern' thsheyth' dnkthbwn tsbw dsgy'' mTl
Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,

ܐܝܟ ܡܕܡ ܕܐܫܠܡܘ ܠܢ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܡܢ ܩܕܝܡ ܗܘܘ ܚܙܝܐ ܘܡܫܡܫܢܐ ܕܝܠܗ ܕܡܠܬܐ

even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us,

ܐܬܚܙܝ ܐܦ ܠܝ ܡܛܠ ܕܩܪܝܒ ܗܘܝܬ ܝܨܝܦܐܝܬ ܠܟܠܗܘܢ ܕܟܠ ܡܕܡ ܒܛܟܣܗ ܐܟܬܘܒ ܠܟ ܢܨܝܚܐ ܬܐܘܦܝܠܐ

it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus;

ܕܬܕܥ ܫܪܪܐ ܕܡܠܐ ܕܐܬܬܠܡܕܬ ܠܗܝܢ

that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.

ܗܘܐ ܒܝܘܡܬܗ ܕܗܪܘܕܣ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܝܗܘܕܐ ܟܗܢܐ ܚܕ ܕܫܡܗ ܗܘܐ ܙܟܪܝܐ ܡܢ ܬܫܡܫܬܐ ܕܒܝܬ ܐܒܝܐ ܘܐܢܬܬܗ ܡܢ ܒܢܬܗ ܕܐܗܪܘܢ ܫܡܗ ܗܘܐ ܐܠܝܫܒܥ

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

ܬܪܝܗܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܙܕܝܩܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܩܕܡ ܐܠܗܐ ܘܡܗܠܟܝܢ ܒܟܠܗܘܢ ܦܘܩܕܢܘܗܝ ܘܒܟܐܢܘܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܕܠܐ ܥܕܠܝ

They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.

ܒܪܐ ܕܝܢ ܠܝܬ ܗܘܐ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܠܝܫܒܥ ܥܩܪܬܐ ܗܘܬ ܘܬܪܝܗܘܢ ܣܓܝܐܝ ܒܝܘܡܬܗܘܢ ܗܘܘ

But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.

ܗܘܐ ܗܘܐ ܕܝܢ ܟܕ ܡܟܗܢ ܗܘܐ ܒܛܟܣܐ ܕܬܫܡܫܬܗ ܩܕܡ ܐܠܗܐ

Now while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division,

ܒܥܝܕܐ ܕܟܗܢܘܬܐ ܡܛܝܗܝ ܕܢܣܝܡ ܒܣܡܐ ܘܥܠ ܠܗܝܟܠܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ

according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

ܘܟܠܗ ܟܢܫܐ ܕܥܡܐ ܡܨܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܠܒܪ ܒܥܕܢܐ ܕܒܣܡܐ

The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.

ܘܐܬܚܙܝ ܠܗ ܠܙܟܪܝܐ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܕܩܐܡ ܡܢ ܝܡܝܢܐ ܕܡܕܒܚܐ ܕܒܣܡܐ

An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

ܘܐܫܬܓܫ ܙܟܪܝܐ ܟܕ ܚܙܝܗܝ ܘܕܚܠܬܐ ܢܦܠܬ ܥܠܘܗܝ

Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.

ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܠܐ ܬܕܚܠ ܙܟܪܝܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܫܬܡܥܬ ܨܠܘܬܟ ܘܐܢܬܬܟ ܐܠܝܫܒܥ ܬܐܠܕ ܠܟ ܒܪܐ ܘܬܩܪܐ ܫܡܗ ܝܘܚܢܢ

But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

ܘܬܗܘܐ ܠܟ ܚܕܘܬܐ ܘܐܪܘܙܐ ܘܣܓܝܐܐ ܢܚܕܘܢ ܒܡܘܠܕܗ
bmwldh nkhdwn wsgy'' w'rwz' khdwth' lk wthhw'
You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth.

ܢܗܘܐ ܓܝܪ ܪܒ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ ܘܚܡܪܐ ܘܫܟܪܐ ܠܐ ܢܫܬܐ ܘܪܘܚܐ ܕܩܘܕܫܐ ܢܬܡܠܐ ܥܕ ܗܘ ܒܟܪܣܐ ܕܐܡܗ
d'mh bkrs' hw ed nthml' dqwdsh' wrwkh' nshth' l' wshkr' wkhmr' mry' qdm rb gyr nhw'
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

ܘܣܓܝܐܐ ܡܢ ܒܢܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܢܦܢܐ ܠܘܬ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܗܘܢ
'lhhwn mry' lwth npn' 'ysryl bny mn wsgy''
He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord, their God.

ܘܗܘ ܢܐܙܠ ܩܕܡܘܗܝ ܒܪܘܚܐ ܘܒܚܝܠܐ ܕܐܠܝܐ ܢܒܝܐ ܕܢܦܢܐ ܠܒܐ ܕܐܒܗܐ ܥܠ ܒܢܝܐ ܘܠܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܠܐ ܡܬܛܦܝܣܝܢ ܠܝܕܥܬܐ ܕܟܐܢܐ ܘܢܛܝܒ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܥܡܐ ܓܡܝܪܐ

He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܙܟܪܝܐ ܠܡܠܐܟܐ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܐܕܥ ܗܕܐ ܐܢܐ ܓܝܪ ܐܝܬܝ ܣܒܐ ܘܐܢܬܬܝ ܣܓܝܐܬ ܒܝܘܡܬܗ ܗܝ

Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”

ܘܥܢܐ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܐܢܐ ܐܢܐ ܓܒܪܝܐܝܠ ܕܩܐܡ ܐܢܐ ܩܕܡ ܐܠܗܐ ܘܐܫܬܠܚܬ ܕܐܡܠܠ ܥܡܟ ܘܐܣܒܪܟ ܗܠܝܢ

The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.

ܡܟܝܠ ܬܗܘܐ ܫܬܝܩ ܘܠܐ ܬܫܟܚ ܠܡܡܠܠܘ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܝܘܡܐ ܕܗܠܝܢ ܢܗܘܝܢ ܥܠ ܕܠܐ ܗܝܡܢܬ ܠܡܠܝ ܗܠܝܢ ܕܡܬܡܠܝܢ ܒܙܒܢܗܝܢ
bzbnhyn dmthmlyn hlyn lmly hymnth dl' el nhwyn dhlyn lywm' edm' lmmllw thshkkh wl' shthyq thhw' mkyl
Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”

ܥܡܐ ܕܝܢ ܩܐܡ ܗܘܐ ܘܡܣܟܐ ܠܙܟܪܝܐ ܘܬܡܝܗܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܥܠ ܬܘܚܪܬܗ ܕܒܗܝܟܠܐ

The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple.

ܟܕ ܢܦܩ ܕܝܢ ܙܟܪܝܐ ܠܐ ܡܫܟܚ ܗܘܐ ܕܢܡܠܠ ܥܡܗܘܢ ܘܐܣܬܟܠܘ ܕܚܙܘܐ ܚܙܐ ܒܗܝܟܠܐ ܘܗܘ ܡܪܡܙ ܪܡܙ ܗܘܐ ܠܗܘܢ ܘܩܘܝ ܟܕ ܚܪܫ

When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute.

ܘܟܕ ܐܬܡܠܝܘ ܝܘܡܬܐ ܕܬܫܡܫܬܗ ܐܙܠ ܠܒܝܬܗ

When the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house.

ܘܗܘܐ ܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܝܘܡܬܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܒܛܢܬ ܐܠܝܫܒܥ ܐܢܬܬܗ ܘܡܛܫܝܐ ܗܘܬ ܢܦܫܗ ܝܪܚܐ ܚܡܫܐ ܘܐܡܪܐ ܗܘܬ
hwth w'mr' khmsh' yrkh' npshh hwth wmTshy' 'nththh 'lyshbe bTnth hnwn ywmth' bthr mn whw'
After these days Elizabeth, his wife, conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,

ܕܗܠܝܢ ܥܒܕ ܠܝ ܡܪܝܐ ܒܝܘܡܬܐ ܕܚܪ ܒܝ ܠܡܣܒ ܚܣܕܝ ܕܒܝܬ ܒܢܝ ܐܢܫܐ
'nsh' bny dbyth khsdy lmsb by dkhr bywmth' mry' ly ebd dhlyn
“Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men.”

ܒܝܪܚܐ ܕܝܢ ܕܫܬܐ ܐܫܬܠܚ ܓܒܪܝܐܝܠ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܡܢ ܠܘܬ ܐܠܗܐ ܠܓܠܝܠܐ ܠܡܕܝܢܬܐ ܕܫܡܗ ܢܨܪܬ
ntsrth dshmh lmdynth' lglyl' 'lh' lwth mn ml'k' gbry'yl 'shthlkh dshth' dyn byrkh'
Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

ܠܘܬ ܒܬܘܠܬܐ ܕܡܟܝܪܐ ܠܓܒܪܐ ܕܫܡܗ ܝܘܣܦ ܡܢ ܒܝܬܗ ܕܕܘܝܕ ܘܫܡܗ ܠܒܬܘܠܬܐ ܡܪܝܡ
mrym lbthwlth' wshmh ddwyd bythh mn ywsp dshmh lgbr' dmkyr' bthwlth' lwth
to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of David’s house. The virgin’s name was Mary.

ܘܥܠ ܠܘܬܗ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܫܠܡ ܠܟܝ ܡܠܝܬ ܛܝܒܘܬܐ ܡܪܢ ܥܡܟܝ ܒܪܝܟܬ ܒܢܫܐ

Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!”

ܗܝ ܕܝܢ ܟܕ ܚܙܬ ܐܬܪܗܒܬ ܒܡܠܬܗ ܘܡܬܚܫܒܐ ܗܘܬ ܕܡܢܐ ܗܘ ܫܠܡܐ ܗܢܐ
hn' shlm' hw dmn' hwth wmthkhshb' bmlthh 'thrhbth khzth kd dyn hy
But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.

ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܠܐ ܬܕܚܠܝܢ ܡܪܝܡ ܐܫܟܚܬܝ ܓܝܪ ܛܝܒܘܬܐ ܠܘܬ ܐܠܗܐ
'lh' lwth Tybwth' gyr 'shkkhthy mrym thdkhlyn l' ml'k' lh w'mr
The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

ܗܐ ܓܝܪ ܬܩܒܠܝܢ ܒܛܢܐ ܘܬܐܠܕܝܢ ܒܪܐ ܘܬܩܪܝܢ ܫܡܗ ܝܫܘܥ
yshwe shmh wthqryn br' wth'ldyn bTn' thqblyn gyr h'
Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and give birth to a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’

ܗܢܐ ܢܗܘܐ ܪܒ ܘܒܪܗ ܕܥܠܝܐ ܢܬܩܪܐ ܘܢܬܠ ܠܗ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܟܘܪܣܝܗ ܕܕܘܝܕ ܐܒܘܗܝ
'bwhy ddwyd kwrsyh 'lh' mry' lh wnthl nthqr' dely' wbrh rb nhw' hn'
He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David,

ܘܢܡܠܟ ܥܠ ܒܝܬܗ ܕܝܥܩܘܒ ܠܥܠܡ ܘܠܡܠܟܘܬܗ ܣܘܦ ܠܐ ܢܗܘܐ
nhw' l' swp wlmlkwthh lelm dyeqwb bythh el wnmlk
and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.”

ܐܡܪܐ ܡܪܝܡ ܠܡܠܐܟܐ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܬܗܘܐ ܗܕܐ ܕܓܒܪܐ ܠܐ ܚܟܝܡ ܠܝ

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?”

ܥܢܐ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܪܘܚܐ ܕܩܘܕܫܐ ܬܐܬܐ ܘܚܝܠܗ ܕܥܠܝܐ ܢܓܢ ܥܠܝܟܝ ܡܛܠ ܗܢܐ ܗܘ ܕܡܬܝܠܕ ܒܟܝ ܩܕܝܫܐ ܗܘ ܘܒܪܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܢܬܩܪܐ

The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.

ܘܗܐ ܐܠܝܫܒܥ ܐܚܝܢܬܟܝ ܐܦ ܗܝ ܒܛܢܐ ܒܪܐ ܒܣܝܒܘܬܗ ܘܗܢܐ ܝܪܚܐ ܕܫܬܐ ܠܗ ܠܗܝ ܕܡܬܩܪܝܐ ܥܩܪܬܐ

Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.

ܡܛܠ ܕܠܐ ܥܛܠ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܡܕܡ

For nothing spoken by God is impossible.”

ܐܡܪܐ ܡܪܝܡ ܗܐ ܐܢܐ ܐܡܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܢܗܘܐ ܠܝ ܐܝܟ ܡܠܬܟ ܘܐܙܠ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܡܢ ܠܘܬܗ

Mary said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” The angel departed from her.

ܩܡܬ ܕܝܢ ܡܪܝܡ ܒܗܘܢ ܒܝܘܡܬܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܘܐܙܠܬ ܒܛܝܠܐܝܬ ܠܛܘܪܐ ܠܡܕܝܢܬܐ ܕܝܗܘܕ

Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah,

ܘܥܠܬ ܠܒܝܬܗ ܕܙܟܪܝܐ ܘܫܐܠܬ ܫܠܡܗ ܕܐܠܝܫܒܥ

and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

ܘܗܘܐ ܕܟܕ ܫܡܥܬ ܐܠܝܫܒܥ ܫܠܡܗ ܕܡܪܝܡ ܕܨ ܥܘܠܐ ܒܟܪܣܗ ܘܐܬܡܠܝܬ ܐܠܝܫܒܥ ܪܘܚܐ ܕܩܘܕܫܐ

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

ܘܩܥܬ ܒܩܠܐ ܪܡܐ ܘܐܡܪܬ ܠܡܪܝܡ ܡܒܪܟܬܐ ܐܢܬܝ ܒܢܫܐ ܘܡܒܪܟ ܗܘ ܦܐܪܐ ܕܒܟܪܣܟܝ

She called out with a loud voice, and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

ܐܝܡܟܐ ܠܝ ܗܕܐ ܕܐܡܗ ܕܡܪܝ ܬܐܬܐ ܠܘܬܝ
lwthy th'th' dmry d'mh hd' ly 'ymk'
Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

ܗܐ ܓܝܪ ܟܕ ܢܦܠ ܩܠܐ ܕܫܠܡܟܝ ܒܐܕܢܝ ܒܚܕܘܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܕܨ ܥܘܠܐ ܒܟܪܣܝ

For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy!

ܘܛܘܒܝܗ ܠܐܝܕܐ ܕܗܝܡܢܬ ܕܗܘܐ ܫܘܠܡܐ ܠܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܐܬܡܠܠ ܥܡܗ ܡܢ ܠܘܬ ܡܪܝܐ
mry' lwth mn emh d'thmll l'ylyn shwlm' dhw' dhymnth l'yd' wTwbyh
Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!”

ܘܐܡܪܬ ܡܪܝܡ ܡܘܪܒܐ ܢܦܫܝ ܠܡܪܝܐ

Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord.

ܘܚܕܝܬ ܪܘܚܝ ܒܐܠܗܐ ܡܚܝܢܝ
mkhyny b'lh' rwkhy wkhdyth
My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior,
48
ܕܚܪ ܒܡܘܟܟܐ ܕܐܡܬܗ ܗܐ ܓܝܪ ܡܢ ܗܫܐ ܛܘܒܐ ܢܬܠܢ ܠܝ ܫܪܒܬܐ ܟܠܗܝܢ
klhyn shrbth' ly nthln Twb' hsh' mn gyr h' d'mthh bmwkk' dkhr
for he has looked at the humble state of his servant. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.

His mercy is for generations of generations on those who fear him.

He has put down princes from their thrones. And has exalted the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty.

He has given help to Israel, his servant, that he might remember mercy,
