ואזל אבימלך בר ירבעל לשכם לות אחי אמיה ומליל עמהון ועם כל זרעית בית אבוהא דאימיה למימר:
lmymr daymyh abwha byth zreyth kl wem emhwn wmlyl amyh akhy lwth lshkm yrbel br abymlk wazl
Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

מלילו כען קדם כל יתבי שכם מה טב לכון דימלכון עליכון שבעין גברא כל בני ירבעל או דימלוך עליכון גברא חד ותדכרון ארי קריבכון ובשרכון אנא:
ana wbshrkwn qrybkwn ary wthdkrwn khd gbra elykwn dymlwk aw yrbel bny kl gbra shbeyn elykwn dymlkwn lkwn Tb mh shkm ythby kl qdm ken mlylw
“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”

ומלילו אחי אמיה עלוהי קדם כל יתבי שכם ית כל פתגמיא האלין ואתפני לבהון בתר אבימלך ארי אמרו אחונא הוא:
hwa akhwna amrw ary abymlk bthr lbhwn wathpny halyn pthgmya kl yth shkm ythby kl qdm elwhy amyh akhy wmlylw
His mother’s brothers spoke of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words. Their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, “He is our brother.”

ויהבו ליה שבעין כסף מבית בעיל קים ואגר בהון אבימלך גברין סריקין ובסירין ואזלו בתרוהי:
bthrwhy wazlw wbsyryn sryqyn gbryn abymlk bhwn wagr qym beyl mbyth ksp shbeyn lyh wyhbw
They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal Berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and reckless fellows who followed him.

ועל לבית אבוהי לעפרה וקטל ית אחוהי בני ירבעל שבעין גברא על אבנא חדא ואשתאר יותם בר ירבעל זעירא ארי איטמר:
ayTmr ary zeyra yrbel br ywthm washthar khda abna el gbra shbeyn yrbel bny akhwhy yth wqTl leprh abwhy lbyth wel
He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone; but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.

ואתכנישו כל יתבי שכם וכל בית מלוא ואזלו ואמליכו ית אבימלך למהוי מלכא עם מישר קמתא די בשכם:
bshkm dy qmtha myshr em mlka lmhwy abymlk yth wamlykw wazlw mlwa byth wkl shkm ythby kl wathknyshw
All the men of Shechem assembled themselves together with all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.

וחויאו ליותם ואזל וקם בריש טורא דגריזין וארים קליה וקרא ואמר להון קבילו מני יתבי שכם ויקבל צלותכון יי:
yy tslwthkwn wyqbl shkm ythby mny qbylw lhwn wamr wqra qlyh warym dgryzyn Twra brysh wqm wazl lywthm wkhwyaw
When they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and lifted up his voice, cried out, and said to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.

המיזל אזלו אילניא למנאה עליהון מלכא ואמרו לזיתא מלוך עלנא:
elna mlwk lzytha wamrw mlka elyhwn lmnah aylnya azlw hmyzl
The trees set out to anoint a king over themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’

ואמר להון זיתא האשבוק ית משחי דמניה מיקרין קדם יי וביה מתפנקין בני אנשא ואהך למעבד מלכו על אילניא:
aylnya el mlkw lmebd wahk ansha bny mthpnqyn wbyh yy qdm myqryn dmnyh mshkhy yth hashbwq zytha lhwn wamr
“But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I stop producing my oil, with which they honor God and man by me, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

ואמרו אלניא לתינתא איתא את מלוכי עלנא:
elna mlwky ath aytha lthyntha alnya wamrw
“The trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and reign over us.’

ואמרת להון תינתא האשבוק ית חוליי וית דבילתי שפירתא ואהך למעבד מלכו על אילניא:
aylnya el mlkw lmebd wahk shpyrtha dbylthy wyth khwlyy yth hashbwq thyntha lhwn wamrth
“But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

ואמרו אילניא לגופנא איתא את מלוכי עלנא:
elna mlwky ath aytha lgwpna aylnya wamrw
“The trees said to the vine, ‘Come and reign over us.’

ואמרת להון גופנא האשבוק ית חמרי דמניה מנסכין קדם יי וביה חדן רברביא ואיהך למעבד מלכו על אילניא:
aylnya el mlkw lmebd wayhk rbrbya khdn wbyh yy qdm mnskyn dmnyh khmry yth hashbwq gwpna lhwn wamrth
“The vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

ואמרו כל אילניא לאטדא איתא את מלוך עלנא:
elna mlwk ath aytha laTda aylnya kl wamrw
“Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come and reign over us.’
15
ואמר אטדא לאילניא אם בקשוט אתון משחין יתי למהוי מלכא עליכון עולו שרו בטולי ואם לא תפוק אשתא מן אטדא ותיכול ית ארזי לבנן:
lbnn arzy yth wthykwl aTda mn ashtha thpwq la wam bTwly shrw ewlw elykwn mlka lmhwy ythy mshkhyn athwn bqshwT am laylnya aTda wamr
“The bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’

וכען אם בקושטא ובשלמתא עבדתון ואמלכתון ית אבימלך ואם טבתא עבדתון עם ירובעל ועם ביתיה ואם כגומלא דידוהי עבדתון ליה:
lyh ebdthwn dydwhy kgwmla wam bythyh wem yrwbel em ebdthwn Tbtha wam abymlk yth wamlkthwn ebdthwn wbshlmtha bqwshTa am wken
“Now therefore, if you have dealt truly and righteously, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his hands

דאגיח אבא עליכון ומסר ית נפשיה כעל גב לאתקטלא ושזיב יתכון מיד מדינאי:
mdynay myd ythkwn wshzyb lathqTla gb kel npshyh yth wmsr elykwn aba dagykh
(for my father fought for you, risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian;

ואתון קמתון על בית אבא יומא דין וקטלתון ית בנוהי שבעין גברא על אבנא חדא ואמלכתון ית אבימלך בר אמתיה על יתבי שכם ארי אחוכון הוא:
hwa akhwkwn ary shkm ythby el amthyh br abymlk yth wamlkthwn khda abna el gbra shbeyn bnwhy yth wqTlthwn dyn ywma aba byth el qmthwn wathwn
and you have risen up against my father’s house today and have slain his sons, seventy persons, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);
19
ואם בקושטא ובשלמתא עבדתון עם ירובעל ועם ביתיה יומא דין חדו באבימלך ויחדי אף הוא בכון:
bkwn hwa ap wykhdy babymlk khdw dyn ywma bythyh wem yrwbel em ebdthwn wbshlmtha bqwshTa wam
if you then have dealt truly and righteously with Jerubbaal and with his house today, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you;
20
ואם לא תפוק אשתא מאבימלך ותיכול ית יתבי שכם וית בית מלוא ותפוק אשתא מיתבי שכם ומבית מלוא ותיכול ית אבימלך:
abymlk yth wthykwl mlwa wmbyth shkm mythby ashtha wthpwq mlwa byth wyth shkm ythby yth wthykwl mabymlk ashtha thpwq la wam
but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the men of Shechem and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem and from the house of Millo and devour Abimelech.”
21
ואפך יותם וערק ואזל לבאר ויתיב תמן מן קדם אבימלך אחוהי:
akhwhy abymlk qdm mn thmn wythyb lbar wazl werq ywthm wapk
Jotham ran away and fled, and went to Beer and lived there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22
ומלך אבימלך על ישראל תלת שנין:
shnyn thlth yshral el abymlk wmlk
Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.
23
ושלח יי רוחא בישא בין אבימלך ובין יתבי שכם ושקרו יתבי שכם באבימלך:
babymlk shkm ythby wshqrw shkm ythby wbyn abymlk byn bysha rwkha yy wshlkh
Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,

למיתי חטוף שבעין בני ירבעל ודמיהון לשואה על אבימלך אחוהון דקטל יתהון ועל יתבי שכם דתקיפו ית ידוהי למקטל ית אחוהי:
akhwhy yth lmqTl ydwhy yth dthqypw shkm ythby wel ythhwn dqTl akhwhwn abymlk el lshwah wdmyhwn yrbel bny shbeyn khTwp lmythy
that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother who killed them, and on the men of Shechem who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.

ושויאו ליה יתבי שכם כמנין על רישי טוריא ואנסין ית כל די עבר עליהון באורחא ואתחוא לאבימלך:
labymlk wathkhwa bawrkha elyhwn ebr dy kl yth wansyn Twrya ryshy el kmnyn shkm ythby lyh wshwyaw
The men of Shechem set an ambush for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who came along that way by them; and Abimelech was told about it.
26
ואתא געל בר עבד ואחוהי ועברו בשכם ואתרחיצו עלוהי יתבי שכם:
shkm ythby elwhy wathrkhytsw bshkm webrw wakhwhy ebd br gel watha
Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.
27
ונפקו לחקלא וקטפו ית כרמיהון ועצרו ועבדו חנגין ועלו לבית טעותהון ואכלו ושתיאו ולטיטו ית אבימלך:
abymlk yth wlTyTw wshthyaw waklw Tewthhwn lbyth welw khngyn webdw wetsrw krmyhwn yth wqTpw lkhqla wnpqw
They went out into the field, harvested their vineyards, trod the grapes, celebrated, and went into the house of their god and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.

ואמר געל בר עבד מן אבימלך ומן שכם ארי נפלחניה הלא בר ירובעל וזבל שולטניה פלחו ית אנשי חמור אבוהי דשכם ומא דין נפלחניה אנחנא:
ankhna nplkhnyh dyn wma dshkm abwhy khmwr anshy yth plkhw shwlTnyh wzbl yrwbel br hla nplkhnyh ary shkm wmn abymlk mn ebd br gel wamr
Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal? Isn’t Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem, but why should we serve him?
29
ומן ימסר ית עמא הדין בידי ואעדי ית אבימלך ואמר לאבימלך טקיס ית משריתך ופוק:
wpwq mshrythk yth Tqys labymlk wamr abymlk yth waedy bydy hdyn ema yth ymsr wmn
I wish that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” He said to Abimelech, “Increase your army and come out!”

ושמע זבול רב קרתא ית פתגמי געל בר עבד ותקיף רוגזיה:
rwgzyh wthqyp ebd br gel pthgmy yth qrtha rb zbwl wshme
When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger burned.
31
ושלח אזגדין לות אבימלך ברז למימר הא געל בר עבד ואחוהי אתן לשכם והא אנון צירין ית קרתא עלך:
elk qrtha yth tsyryn anwn wha lshkm athn wakhwhy ebd br gel ha lmymr brz abymlk lwth azgdyn wshlkh
He sent messengers to Abimelech craftily, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and behold, they incite the city against you.
32
וכען קום בליליא את ועמא דעמך וכמון בחקלא:
bkhqla wkmwn demk wema ath blylya qwm wken
Now therefore, go up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field.
33
ויהי בצפרא כמדנח שמשא תקדים ותתנגיד על קרתא והא הוא ועמא די עמיה נפקין לקדמותך ותעביד ליה כמא דתשכח ידך:
ydk dthshkkh kma lyh wthebyd lqdmwthk npqyn emyh dy wema hwa wha qrtha el wththngyd thqdym shmsha kmdnkh btspra wyhy
It shall be that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early and rush on the city. Behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, then may you do to them as you shall find occasion.”

וקם אבימלך וכל עמא די עמיה בליליא וכמנו על שכם ארבעא משרין:
mshryn arbea shkm el wkmnw blylya emyh dy ema wkl abymlk wqm
Abimelech rose up, and all the people who were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
35
ונפק געל בר עבד וקם במעלנא דתרע קרתא וקם אבימלך ועמא די עמיה מן כמנא:
kmna mn emyh dy wema abymlk wqm qrtha dthre bmelna wqm ebd br gel wnpq
Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. Abimelech rose up, and the people who were with him, from the ambush.
36
וחזא געל ית עמא ואמר לזבול הא עמא נחית מרישי טוריא ואמר ליה זבול ית טולא דטוריא את חזי כגבריא:
kgbrya khzy ath dTwrya Twla yth zbwl lyh wamr Twrya mryshy nkhyth ema ha lzbwl wamr ema yth gel wkhza
When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” Zebul said to him, “You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men.”
37
ואוסף עוד געל למללא ואמר הא עמא נחתין מן תוקפא דארעא ומשריתא חדא אתיא מאורח מישר מעונניא:
mewnnya myshr mawrkh athya khda wmshrytha darea thwqpa mn nkhthyn ema ha wamr lmlla gel ewd wawsp
Gaal spoke again and said, “Behold, people are coming down by the middle of the land, and one company comes by the way of the oak of Meonenim.”
38
ואמר ליה זבול אן אנון פתגמך די את אמר מן אבימלך ארי נפלחיניה הלא דין עמא דקצתא ביה פוק כען ואגח קרבא ביה:
byh qrba wagkh ken pwq byh dqtstha ema dyn hla nplkhynyh ary abymlk mn amr ath dy pthgmk anwn an zbwl lyh wamr
Then Zebul said to him, “Now where is your mouth, that you said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Isn’t this the people that you have despised? Please go out now and fight with them.”
39
ונפק געל קדם יתבי שכם ואגח קרבא באבימלך:
babymlk qrba wagkh shkm ythby qdm gel wnpq
Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
40
ורדפיה אבימלך ואפך מן קדמוהי ונפלו קטולין סגיאין עד מעלנא דתרעא:
dthrea melna ed sgyayn qTwlyn wnplw qdmwhy mn wapk abymlk wrdpyh
Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many fell wounded, even to the entrance of the gate.
41
ויתיב אבימלך בארומא ותריך זבול ית געל וית אחוהי מלמיתב בשכם:
bshkm mlmythb akhwhy wyth gel yth zbwl wthryk barwma abymlk wythyb
Abimelech lived at Arumah; and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, that they should not dwell in Shechem.
42
והוה ביומא דבתרוהי ונפק עמא לחקלא וחויאו לאבימלך:
labymlk wkhwyaw lkhqla ema wnpq dbthrwhy bywma whwh
On the next day, the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.
43
ודבר ית עמא ופלגנון לתלת משרין וכמן בחקלא וחזא והא עמא נפיק מן קרתא וקם עליהון ומחנון:
wmkhnwn elyhwn wqm qrtha mn npyq ema wha wkhza bkhqla wkmn mshryn lthlth wplgnwn ema yth wdbr
He took the people and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and behold, the people came out of the city. So, he rose up against them and struck them.
44
ואבימלך וכל משרין דעמיה אתנגידו וקמו במעלנא דתרע קרתא ותרתין משרין אתנגידו על כל די בחקלא וקטלונון:
wqTlwnwn bkhqla dy kl el athngydw mshryn wthrthyn qrtha dthre bmelna wqmw athngydw demyh mshryn wkl wabymlk
Abimelech and the companies that were with him rushed forward and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city; and the two companies rushed on all who were in the field and struck them.
45
ואבימלך אגיח קרבא בקרתא כל יומא ההוא וכבש ית קרתא וית עמא די בה קטל ותרע ית קרתא וזרעה מלחא:
mlkha wzreh qrtha yth wthre qTl bh dy ema wyth qrtha yth wkbsh hhwa ywma kl bqrtha qrba agykh wabymlk
Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city and killed the people in it. He beat down the city and sowed it with salt.
46
ושמעו כל יתבי מגדל שכם ואתו לצריח בית אל למגזר קים:
qym lmgzr al byth ltsrykh wathw shkm mgdl ythby kl wshmew
When all the men of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.
47
ואתחואה לאבימלך ארי אתכנשו כל יתבי מגדל שכם:
shkm mgdl ythby kl athknshw ary labymlk wathkhwah
Abimelech was told that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

וסליק אבימלך לטורא דצלמון הוא וכל עמא די עמיה ונסיב אבימלך ית כולביא בידיה וקץ סוכת אעין ונטלה ושוי על כתפוהי ואמר לעמא די עמיה מה חזיתון עבדית אוחו עבידו כותי:
kwthy ebydw awkhw ebdyth khzythwn mh emyh dy lema wamr kthpwhy el wshwy wnTlh aeyn swkth wqts bydyh kwlbya yth abymlk wnsyb emyh dy ema wkl hwa dtslmwn lTwra abymlk wslyq
Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an ax in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder. Then he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done!”

וקצו אף כל עמא גבר סוכיה ואזלו בתר אבימלך ושויאו על צריח ואדליקו עליהון ית צריח בנורא ואתקטלו אף כל אנשי מגדל שכם כאלף גבר ואתתא:
waththa gbr kalp shkm mgdl anshy kl ap wathqTlw bnwra tsrykh yth elyhwn wadlyqw tsrykh el wshwyaw abymlk bthr wazlw swkyh gbr ema kl ap wqtsw
All the people likewise each cut down his bough, followed Abimelech, and put them at the base of the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

ואזל אבימלך לתבץ ושרא בתבץ וכבשה:
wkbshh bthbts wshra lthbts abymlk wazl
Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51
ומגדל תקיף הוה בגו קרתא ואפיכו לתמן כל גבריא ונשיא וכל יתבי קרתא ואגיפו באפיהון וסליקו על אגר מגדלא:
mgdla agr el wslyqw bapyhwn wagypw qrtha ythby wkl wnshya gbrya kl lthmn wapykw qrtha bgw hwh thqyp wmgdl
But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women of the city fled there, and shut themselves in, and went up to the roof of the tower.

ואתא אבימלך עד מגדלא ואגיח קרבא ביה וקריב עד תרע מגדלא לאוקדותיה בנורא:
bnwra lawqdwthyh mgdla thre ed wqryb byh qrba wagykh mgdla ed abymlk watha
Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it, and came near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

ורמת אתתא חדא פלגות רכב רחיא על רישא דאבימלך ורעת ית גולגלתיה:
gwlglthyh yth wreth dabymlk rysha el rkhya rkb plgwth khda aththa wrmth
A certain woman cast an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, and broke his skull.

וקרא בפריע לעולימא נטיל זיניה ואמר ליה שלוף חרבך וקטולני דלמא יימרון עלי אתתא קטלתיה וקטליה עולימיה ומית:
wmyth ewlymyh wqTlyh qTlthyh aththa ely yymrwn dlma wqTwlny khrbk shlwp lyh wamr zynyh nTyl lewlyma bprye wqra
Then he called hastily to the young man, his armor bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, that men not say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’ His young man thrust him through, and he died.”

וחזו גבר ישראל ארי מית אבימלך ואזלו אנש לאתריה:
lathryh ansh wazlw abymlk myth ary yshral gbr wkhzw
When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they each departed to his place.
56
ואתיב יי ית בישת אבימלך דעבד לאבוהי למקטל ית שבעין אחוהי:
akhwhy shbeyn yth lmqTl labwhy debd abymlk byshth yth yy wathyb
Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father in killing his seventy brothers;
