40 verses
1
ועבדו בני ישראל דביש קדם יי ומסרינון יי בידא דמדינאי שבע שנין:
shnyn shbe dmdynay byda yy wmsrynwn yy qdm dbysh yshral bny webdw
The children of Israel did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, so Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

ותקיפת יד מדינאי על ישראל מן קדם מדינאי עבדו להון בני ישראל ית מטמוריתא דבטוריא וית מערתא וית מצודתא:
mtswdtha wyth mertha wyth dbTwrya mTmwrytha yth yshral bny lhwn ebdw mdynay qdm mn yshral el mdynay yd wthqypth
The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made themselves the dens which are in the mountains, the caves, and the strongholds.

והוה כד זרע ישראל וסלקין מדינאי ועמלקאי ובני מדינחא וסלקין עלוהי:
elwhy wslqyn mdynkha wbny wemlqay mdynay wslqyn yshral zre kd whwh
So it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites, the Amalekites, and the children of the east came up against them.

ושרו עליהון ומחבלין ית עללתא דארעא עד מעלנא דעזה ולא משארין מזון לקיימא נפש בישראל ואמר ותור וחמר:
wkhmr wthwr wamr byshral npsh lqyyma mzwn msharyn wla dezh melna ed darea elltha yth wmkhblyn elyhwn wshrw
They encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, until you come to Gaza. They left no sustenance in Israel, and no sheep, ox, or donkey.

ארי אינון וגיתיהון סלקין ומשכניהון ואתן כמסת גובא לסגי ולהון ולגמליהון לית מנין ועלין בארעא לחבלותה:
lkhblwthh barea welyn mnyn lyth wlgmlyhwn wlhwn lsgy gwba kmsth wathn wmshknyhwn slqyn wgythyhwn aynwn ary
For they came up with their livestock and their tents. They came in as locusts for multitude. Both they and their camels were without number; and they came into the land to destroy it.

ומאך ישראל לחדא מן קדם מדינאי וזעיקו בני ישראל קדם יי:
yy qdm yshral bny wzeyqw mdynay qdm mn lkhda yshral wmak
Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to Yahweh.

והוה כד זעיקו בני ישראל קדם יי על עסק מדינאי:
mdynay esq el yy qdm yshral bny zeyqw kd whwh
When the children of Israel cried to Yahweh because of Midian,

ושלח יי גברא נביא לות בני ישראל ואמר להון כדנן אמר יי אלהא דישראל אנא אסקית יתכון ממצרים ואפקית יתכון מבית עבדותא:
ebdwtha mbyth ythkwn wapqyth mmtsrym ythkwn asqyth ana dyshral alha yy amr kdnn lhwn wamr yshral bny lwth nbya gbra yy wshlkh
Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage.

ושיזבית יתכון מידא דמצראי ומידא כל דחקיכון ותרכית יתהון מן קדמיכון ויהבית לכון ית ארעהון:
arehwn yth lkwn wyhbyth qdmykwn mn ythhwn wthrkyth dkhqykwn kl wmyda dmtsray myda ythkwn wshyzbyth
I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land.

ואמרת לכון אנא יי אלהכון לא תדחלו ית טעות אמוראי דאתון יתבין בארעהון ולא קבלתון למימרי:
lmymry qblthwn wla barehwn ythbyn dathwn amwray Tewth yth thdkhlw la alhkwn yy ana lkwn wamrth
I said to you, “I am Yahweh your God. You shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not listened to my voice.’”

ואתא מלאכא דיי ויתב תחות בוטמא די בעפרה די ליואש אבוהי דעזרי וגדעון בריה חביט חטין במעצרתא לערקא מן קדם מדינאי:
mdynay qdm mn lerqa bmetsrtha khTyn khbyT bryh wgdewn dezry abwhy lywash dy beprh dy bwTma thkhwth wythb dyy mlaka watha
Yahweh’s angel came and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. His son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites.

ואתגלי ליה מלאכא דיי ואמר ליה מימרא דיי בסעדך גבר חילא:
khyla gbr bsedk dyy mymra lyh wamr dyy mlaka lyh wathgly
Yahweh’s angel appeared to him, and said to him, “Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor!”

ואמר ליה גדעון בבעו רבוני ואית שכנתא דיי בסעדנא ולמא ערענא כל דא ואן כל פרשותיה דאשתעיאו לנא אבהתנא למימר הלא ממצרים אסקנא יי וכען רטשנא יי ומסרנא בידא דמדינאי:
dmdynay byda wmsrna yy rTshna wken yy asqna mmtsrym hla lmymr abhthna lna dashtheyaw prshwthyh kl wan da kl erena wlma bsedna dyy shkntha wayth rbwny bbew gdewn lyh wamr
Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”

ואתפני ליה יי ואמר אזיל בחילך דין ותפרוק ית ישראל מידא דמדינאי הלא שלחתיך:
shlkhthyk hla dmdynay myda yshral yth wthprwq dyn bkhylk azyl wamr yy lyh wathpny
Yahweh looked at him, and said, “Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven’t I sent you?”

ואמר ליה בבעו יי במא אפרוק ית ישראל הלא הא זרעיתי זעירא בשבט מנשה ואנא חלש בבית אבא:
aba bbyth khlsh wana mnshh bshbT zeyra zreythy ha hla yshral yth aprwq bma yy bbew lyh wamr
He said to him, “O Lord, how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

ואמר ליה יי ארי יהי מימרי בסעדך ותקטול ית מדין כגברא חד:
khd kgbra mdyn yth wthqTwl bsedk mymry yhy ary yy lyh wamr
Yahweh said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”
17
ואמר ליה אם כען אשכחית רחמין בעינך ותעביד לי את די את ממליל עמי:
emy mmlyl ath dy ath ly wthebyd beynk rkhmyn ashkkhyth ken am lyh wamr
He said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me.

לא כען תעדי מכא עד מתאי לותך ואפק ית תקרובתי ואניח קדמך ואמר אנא אוריך עד דתתוב:
dththwb ed awryk ana wamr qdmk wanykh thqrwbthy yth wapq lwthk mthay ed mka thedy ken la
Please don’t go away until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you.” He said, “I will wait until you come back.”

וגדעון אתא ועבד גדיא בר עזי ומכילתא דקמחא אפה פטיר בסרא שוי בסלא ותבשילא שוי בקדרא ואפיק לותיה לתחות אילנא וקרב:
wqrb aylna lthkhwth lwthyh wapyq bqdra shwy wthbshyla bsla shwy bsra pTyr aph dqmkha wmkyltha ezy br gdya webd atha wgdewn
Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal. He put the meat in a basket and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.
20
ואמר ליה מלאכא דיי סב ית בסרא וית פטירא ואחית לכיפא דיכי וית תבשילא שפוך ועבד כן:
kn webd shpwk thbshyla wyth dyky lkypa wakhyth pTyra wyth bsra yth sb dyy mlaka lyh wamr
The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” He did so.

ואושיט מלאכא דיי ית ריש שוטיתא דבידיה וקריב בבסרא ובפטירא וסליקת אשתא מן טנרא ואכלת ית בסרא וית פטירא ומלאכא דיי אסתלק מלקביל עינוהי:
eynwhy mlqbyl asthlq dyy wmlaka pTyra wyth bsra yth waklth Tnra mn ashtha wslyqth wbpTyra bbsra wqryb dbydyh shwTytha rysh yth dyy mlaka wawshyT
Then Yahweh’s angel stretched out the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up out of the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. Then Yahweh’s angel departed out of his sight.

וחזא גדעון ארי מלאכא דיי הוא ואמר גדעון בבעו יי אלהים ארי על כן חזיתי מלאכא דיי אפין באפין:
bapyn apyn dyy mlaka khzythy kn el ary alhym yy bbew gdewn wamr hwa dyy mlaka ary gdewn wkhza
Gideon saw that he was Yahweh’s angel; and Gideon said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh! Because I have seen Yahweh’s angel face to face!”
23
ואמר ליה יי שלם לך לא תדחל לא תמות:
thmwth la thdkhl la lk shlm yy lyh wamr
Yahweh said to him, “Peace be to you! Don’t be afraid. You shall not die.”
24
ובנא תמן גדעון מדבחא קדם יי ופלח עלוהי קדם יי דעבד ליה שלם עד יומא הדין עד כען איתוהי בעפרת אבוהי דעזר:
dezr abwhy beprth aythwhy ken ed hdyn ywma ed shlm lyh debd yy qdm elwhy wplkh yy qdm mdbkha gdewn thmn wbna
Then Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh, and called it “Yahweh is Peace.” To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

והוה בליליא ההוא ואמר ליה יי סב ית תור בר תורי די לאבוך ותור תנינא דאתפטים שבע שנין ותפגר ית אגורא דבעלא די לאבוך וית אשרתא די עלוהי תקוץ:
thqwts elwhy dy ashrtha wyth labwk dy dbela agwra yth wthpgr shnyn shbe dathpTym thnyna wthwr labwk dy thwry br thwr yth sb yy lyh wamr hhwa blylya whwh
That same night, Yahweh said to him, “Take your father’s bull, even the second bull seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it.

ותבני מדבחא קדם יי אלהך על ריש תוקפא הדין בסדרא ותסב ית תורא תנינא ותסיק עלתא באעי אשרתא די תקוץ:
thqwts dy ashrtha baey eltha wthsyq thnyna thwra yth wthsb bsdra hdyn thwqpa rysh el alhk yy qdm mdbkha wthbny
Then build an altar to Yahweh your God on the top of this stronghold, in an orderly way, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.”
27
ודבר גדעון עסראן גברין מעבדוהי ועבד כמא דמליל עמיה יי והוה מדדחיל מן בית אבוהי ומן אנשי קרתא מלמעבד ביממא ועבד ליליא:
lylya webd bymma mlmebd qrtha anshy wmn abwhy byth mn mddkhyl whwh yy emyh dmlyl kma webd mebdwhy gbryn esran gdewn wdbr
Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken to him. Because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, he could not do it by day, but he did it by night.
28
ואקדימו אנשי קרתא בצפרא והא מתרע אגורא דבעלא ואשרתא די עלוהי קציצא וית תורא תנינא מסק על מדבחא דבנוי:
dbnwy mdbkha el msq thnyna thwra wyth qtsytsa elwhy dy washrtha dbela agwra mthre wha btspra qrtha anshy waqdymw
When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built.
29
ואמרו גבר לחבריה מן עבד פתגמא הדין ותבעו ובעו ואמרו גדעון בר יואש עבד פתגמא הדין:
hdyn pthgma ebd ywash br gdewn wamrw wbew wthbew hdyn pthgma ebd mn lkhbryh gbr wamrw
They said to one another, “Who has done this thing?” When they inquired and asked, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”
30
ואמרו אנשי קרתא ליואש אפיק ית ברך ויתקטל ארי תרע ית איגורא דבעלא וארי קץ אשרתא די עלוהי:
elwhy dy ashrtha qts wary dbela aygwra yth thre ary wythqTl brk yth apyq lywash qrtha anshy wamrw
Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.”
31
ואמר יואש לכל דקמו עלוהי האתון תתפרעין לבעלא אם אתון תפרקון יתיה דיתפרע ליה יתקטל ברם ארכא יתיהב ליה עד צפרא אם צרוך אית ביה יתפרע ליה בעלא ארי תרע ית אגוריה:
agwryh yth thre ary bela lyh ythpre byh ayth tsrwk am tspra ed lyh ythyhb arka brm ythqTl lyh dythpre ythyh thprqwn athwn am lbela ththpreyn hathwn elwhy dqmw lkl ywash wamr
Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death by morning! If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar!”
32
וקרא ליה ביומא ההוא ירבעל למימר יתפרע ליה בעלא ארי תרע ית אגוריה:
agwryh yth thre ary bela lyh ythpre lmymr yrbel hhwa bywma lyh wqra
Therefore on that day he named him Jerub-Baal, saying, “Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.”
33
וכל מדינאי ועמלקאי ובני מדינחא אתכנישו כחדא ועברו ושרו במישר יזרעאל:
yzreal bmyshr wshrw webrw kkhda athknyshw mdynkha wbny wemlqay mdynay wkl
Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

ורוח גבורא מן קדם יי לבישת ית גדעון ותקע בשופרא ואתכנישו אנש אביעזר בתרוהי:
bthrwhy abyezr ansh wathknyshw bshwpra wthqe gdewn yth lbyshth yy qdm mn gbwra wrwkh
But Yahweh’s Spirit came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together to follow him.
35
ואזגדין שלח בכל תחום מנשה ואתכנישו אף אינון בתרוהי ואזגדין שלח בשבט אשר ובשבט זבולן ובשבט נפתלי וסליקו לקדמותהון:
lqdmwthhwn wslyqw npthly wbshbT zbwln wbshbT ashr bshbT shlkh wazgdyn bthrwhy aynwn ap wathknyshw mnshh thkhwm bkl shlkh wazgdyn
He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they also were gathered together to follow him. He sent messengers to Asher, to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
36
ואמר גדעון קדם יי אם איתך פריק בידי ית ישראל כמא דמלילתא:
dmlyltha kma yshral yth bydy pryq aythk am yy qdm gdewn wamr
Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken,
37
הא אנא מחת ית גזתא דעמרא בבית אדרי אם טלא יהי על גזתא בלחודה ועל כל ארעא יובשא ואדע ארי תפרוק בידי ית ישראל כמא דמללתא:
dmlltha kma yshral yth bydy thprwq ary wade ywbsha area kl wel blkhwdh gztha el yhy Tla am adry bbyth demra gztha yth mkhth ana ha
behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I’ll know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken.”
38
והוה כן ואקדים מיומא דבתרוהי ועצר ית גזתא ונפץ טלא מן גזתא מלי לקנא דמיא:
dmya lqna mly gztha mn Tla wnpts gztha yth wetsr dbthrwhy mywma waqdym kn whwh
It was so; for he rose up early on the next day, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

ואמר גדעון קדם יי לא יתקיף רוגזך בי ואמלל ברם זמנא הדא אנסי כען לחוד זמנא בגזתא יהי כען יובשא על גזתא בלחודה ועל כל ארעא יהי טלא:
Tla yhy area kl wel blkhwdh gztha el ywbsha ken yhy bgztha zmna lkhwd ken ansy hda zmna brm wamll by rwgzk ythqyp la yy qdm gdewn wamr
Gideon said to God, “Don’t let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece. Let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.”
