והוה ביומיא האינון ומלכא לית בישראל והוה גבר לואה דר בסיפי טורא דבית אפרים ונסיב ליה אתתא לחינתא מבית לחם דבית יהודה:
yhwdh dbyth lkhm mbyth lkhyntha aththa lyh wnsyb aprym dbyth Twra bsypy dr lwah gbr whwh byshral lyth wmlka haynwn bywmya whwh
In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took for himself a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.

ובסרת עלוהי לחינתיה ואזלת מלותיה לבית אבוהא לבית לחם דבית יהודה והות תמן יומין ארבעא ירחין:
yrkhyn arbea ywmyn thmn whwth yhwdh dbyth lkhm lbyth abwha lbyth mlwthyh wazlth lkhynthyh elwhy wbsrth
His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there for four months.

וקם בעלה ואזל בתרהא למליל על לבה לאתבותה ועולימיה עמיה וזוג חמרין ואעלתיה לבית אבוהא וחזהו אבוהא דעולמתא וחדי לקדמותיה:
lqdmwthyh wkhdy dewlmtha abwha wkhzhw abwha lbyth waelthyh khmryn wzwg emyh wewlymyh lathbwthh lbh el lmlyl bthrha wazl belh wqm
Her husband arose and went after her to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him and a couple of donkeys. She brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

ואתקיף ביה חמוהי אבוהא דעולמתא ויתיב עמיה תלתא יומין ואכלו ושתיאו ובתו תמן:
thmn wbthw wshthyaw waklw ywmyn thltha emyh wythyb dewlmtha abwha khmwhy byh wathqyp
His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, kept him there; and he stayed with him three days. So they ate and drank, and stayed there.

והוה ביומא רביעאה ואקדימו בצפרא וקם למיזל ואמר אבוהא דעולמתא לחתניה סעיד לבך פתא דלחמא ובתר כן תיזלון:
thyzlwn kn wbthr dlkhma ptha lbk seyd lkhthnyh dewlmtha abwha wamr lmyzl wqm btspra waqdymw rbyeah bywma whwh
On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning, and he rose up to depart. The young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.”

ואסחרו ואכלו תרויהון כחדא ושתיאו ואמר אבוהא דעולמתא לגברא שרי כען ובית וישפר לבך:
lbk wyshpr wbyth ken shry lgbra dewlmtha abwha wamr wshthyaw kkhda thrwyhwn waklw waskhrw
So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together. Then the young lady’s father said to the man, “Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.”

וקם גברא למיזל ואתקיף ביה חמוהי ותב ובת תמן:
thmn wbth wthb khmwhy byh wathqyp lmyzl gbra wqm
The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he stayed there again.

ואקדים בצפרא ביומא חמישאה למיזל ואמר אבוהא דעולמתא סעוד כען לבך ואתעכבו עד מתפני יומא ואכלו תרויהון:
thrwyhwn waklw ywma mthpny ed wathekbw lbk ken sewd dewlmtha abwha wamr lmyzl khmyshah bywma btspra waqdym
He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady’s father said, “Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines;” and they both ate.

וקם גברא למיזל הוא ולחינתיה ועולימיה ואמר ליה חמוהי אבוהא דעולמתא הא כען פנא יומא למערב ביתו כען הכא לחוד יומא דין בית הכא וישפר לבך ותקדמון מחר לאורחתכון ותהך לקירוך:
lqyrwk wthhk lawrkhthkwn mkhr wthqdmwn lbk wyshpr hka byth dyn ywma lkhwd hka ken bythw lmerb ywma pna ken ha dewlmtha abwha khmwhy lyh wamr wewlymyh wlkhynthyh hwa lmyzl gbra wqm
When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night. Behold, the day is ending. Stay here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.”

ולא אבא גברא למבת וקם ואזל ואתא עד לקביל יבוס היא ירושלם ועמיה זוג חמרין חשיקין ולחינתיה עמיה:
emyh wlkhynthyh khshyqyn khmryn zwg wemyh yrwshlm hya ybws lqbyl ed watha wazl wqm lmbth gbra aba wla
But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and went near Jebus (also called Jerusalem). With him were a couple of saddled donkeys. His concubine also was with him.

אינון עם יבוס ויומא מאך לחדא ואמר עולימא לרבוניה איתא כען ונזור לקרתא דיבוסאי הדא ונבית בה:
bh wnbyth hda dybwsay lqrtha wnzwr ken aytha lrbwnyh ewlyma wamr lkhda mak wywma ybws em aynwn
When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Please come and let’s enter into this city of the Jebusites, and stay in it.”

ואמר ליה רבוניה לא נזור לקרתא בני עממיא דלא מבני ישראל אינון ונתמטי עד גבעתא:
gbetha ed wnthmTy aynwn yshral mbny dla emmya bny lqrtha nzwr la rbwnyh lyh wamr
His master said to him, “We won’t enter into the city of a foreigner that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”

ואמר לעולימיה איתא ונקריב בחד מן אתריא ונבית בגבעתא או ברמתא:
brmtha aw bgbetha wnbyth athrya mn bkhd wnqryb aytha lewlymyh wamr
He said to his servant, “Come and let’s draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”

ועברו ואזלו ועלת להון שמשא בסטר גבעתא די לשבט בנימין:
bnymyn lshbT dy gbetha bsTr shmsha lhwn welth wazlw webrw
So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.

וזרו לתמן למיעל למבת בגבעתא ואתא ויתיב ברחובא דקרתא ולית אנש דכניש יתהון לביתא למבת:
lmbth lbytha ythhwn dknysh ansh wlyth dqrtha brkhwba wythyb watha bgbetha lmbth lmyel lthmn wzrw
They went over there, to go in to stay in Gibeah. He went in, and sat down in the street of the city; for there was no one who took them into his house to stay.

והא גברא סבא אתא מן עיבידתיה מן חקלא ברמשא וגברא מטורא דבית אפרים והוא דר בגבעתא ואנשי אתרא מן שבטא דבית בנימין:
bnymyn dbyth shbTa mn athra wanshy bgbetha dr whwa aprym dbyth mTwra wgbra brmsha khqla mn eybydthyh mn atha sba gbra wha
Behold, an old man came from his work out of the field at evening. Now the man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.

וזקיף עינוהי וחזא ית גברא דארח ברחוב קרתא ואמר גברא סבא לאן את אזיל ומנן את אתי:
athy ath wmnn azyl ath lan sba gbra wamr qrtha brkhwb darkh gbra yth wkhza eynwhy wzqyp
He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”

ואמר ליה עברין אנחנא מבית לחם דבית יהודה עד סיפי טורא דבית אפרים מתמן אנא ואנא אזיל עד בית לחם דבית יהודה ולבית מקדשא דיי אנא אזיל ולית אנש דכניש יתי לביתא:
lbytha ythy dknysh ansh wlyth azyl ana dyy mqdsha wlbyth yhwdh dbyth lkhm byth ed azyl wana ana mthmn aprym dbyth Twra sypy ed yhwdh dbyth lkhm mbyth ankhna ebryn lyh wamr
He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to Yahweh’s house; and there is no one who has taken me into his house.
19
ואף תבנא ואף כסתא אית לחמרנא ואף לחם וחמר אית לי ולאמתך ולעולימא דעם עבדך לית חוסרן כל מדעם:
mdem kl khwsrn lyth ebdk dem wlewlyma wlamthk ly ayth wkhmr lkhm wap lkhmrna ayth kstha wap thbna wap
Yet there is both straw and feed for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your servant, and for the young man who is with your servants. There is no lack of anything.”
20
ואמר גברא סבא שלם לך לחוד כל חוסרנך עלי לחוד ברחובא לא תבית:
thbyth la brkhwba lkhwd ely khwsrnk kl lkhwd lk shlm sba gbra wamr
The old man said, “Peace be to you! Just let me supply all your needs, but don’t sleep in the street.”

ואעליה לביתיה ורמא כסתא לחמריה ואסחו רגליהון ואכלו ושתיאו:
wshthyaw waklw rglyhwn waskhw lkhmryh kstha wrma lbythyh waelyh
So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder. Then they washed their feet, and ate and drank.

אינון מטיבין ית לבהון והא אנשי קרתא גברין בני רשעא אקיפו ית ביתא דחקין למתבר דשא ואמרו לגברא מריה דביתא סבא למימר אפיק ית גברא דעל לביתך ונדעיניה:
wndeynyh lbythk del gbra yth apyq lmymr sba dbytha mryh lgbra wamrw dsha lmthbr dkhqyn bytha yth aqypw rshea bny gbryn qrtha anshy wha lbhwn yth mTybyn aynwn
As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain wicked fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we can have sex with him!”

ונפק לותהון גברא מריה דביתא ואמר להון בבעו אחי לא תבאשון כען בתר דעל גברא הדין לביתי לא תעבדון ית קלנא הדין:
hdyn qlna yth thebdwn la lbythy hdyn gbra del bthr ken thbashwn la akhy bbew lhwn wamr dbytha mryh gbra lwthhwn wnpq
The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.

הא ברתי בתולתא ולחינתיה אפיק כען יתהן וענו יתהן ועבידו להן דתקין בעיניכון ולגברא הדין לא תעבדון עיסק קלנא הדין:
hdyn qlna eysq thebdwn la hdyn wlgbra beynykwn dthqyn lhn webydw ythhn wenw ythhn ken apyq wlkhynthyh bthwltha brthy ha
Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”

ולא אבו גבריא לקבלא מניה ואתקיף גברא בלחינתיה ואפיק לותהון לברא וידעו יתה ואתלעבו בה כל ליליא עד צפרא ושלחוהא כמיסק צפרא:
tspra kmysq wshlkhwha tspra ed lylya kl bh wathlebw ythh wydew lbra lwthhwn wapyq blkhynthyh gbra wathqyp mnyh lqbla gbrya abw wla
But the men wouldn’t listen to him; so the man grabbed his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning. When the day began to dawn, they let her go.

ואתת אתתא למפני צפרא ונפלת בתרע בית גברא די רבונה תמן עד די נהור:
nhwr dy ed thmn rbwnh dy gbra byth bthre wnplth tspra lmpny aththa wathth
Then the woman came in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light.
27
וקם רבונהא בצפרא ופתח דשי ביתא ונפק למיזל לארחיה והא אתתא לחינתיה רמיא בתרע ביתא וידהא מחתין על סיפא:
sypa el mkhthyn wydha bytha bthre rmya lkhynthyh aththa wha larkhyh lmyzl wnpq bytha dshy wpthkh btspra rbwnha wqm
Her lord rose up in the morning and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine had fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.
28
ואמר לה קומי וניזיל ולא מתיבא ונסבה על חמרא וקם גברא ואזל לאתריה:
lathryh wazl gbra wqm khmra el wnsbh mthyba wla wnyzyl qwmy lh wamr
He said to her, “Get up, and let’s get going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.

ואתא לביתיה ונסיב ית סכינא ואתקיף בלחינתיה והדמה לאיברהא לתרי עשר איברין ושלחה בכל תחום ארע דישראל:
dyshral are thkhwm bkl wshlkhh aybryn eshr lthry laybrha whdmh blkhynthyh wathqyp skyna yth wnsyb lbythyh watha
When he had come into his house, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.

והוה כל דחזי ואמר לא הות ולא אתחזיאת כהדא למן יומא די סליקו בני ישראל מארעא דמצרים עד יומא הדין שוו לבכון עלה אתיעצו ומלילו:
wmlylw athyetsw elh lbkwn shww hdyn ywma ed dmtsrym marea yshral bny slyqw dy ywma lmn khda athkhzyath wla hwth la wamr dkhzy kl whwh
It was so, that all who saw it said, “Such a deed has not been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”
