ביומיא האינון לית מלכא בישראל וביומיא האינון שבטא דבית דן בען להון אחסנתא למתב ארי לא אתפלגת להון עד יומא ההוא מגו שבטיא דישראל באחסנא:
bakhsna dyshral shbTya mgw hhwa ywma ed lhwn athplgth la ary lmthb akhsntha lhwn ben dn dbyth shbTa haynwn wbywmya byshral mlka lyth haynwn bywmya
In those days there was no king in Israel. In those days the tribe of the Danites sought an inheritance to dwell in; for to that day, their inheritance had not fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.

ושלחו בני דן מזרעיתהון חמשא גוברין מקצתהון גברין בני חילא מצרעה ומאשתאול לאללא ית ארעא ולמבדקא ואמרו להון אזילו בדוקו ית ארעא ואתו לטורא דבית אפרים עד בית מיכה ובתו תמן:
thmn wbthw mykh byth ed aprym dbyth lTwra wathw area yth bdwqw azylw lhwn wamrw wlmbdqa area yth lalla wmashthawl mtsreh khyla bny gbryn mqtsthhwn gwbryn khmsha mzreythhwn dn bny wshlkhw
The children of Dan sent five men of their family from their whole number, men of valor, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land and to search it. They said to them, “Go, explore the land!” They came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.

אינון עם ביתא דמיכה ואינון אשתמודעו ית קל עולימא ליואה וזרו לתמן ואמרו ליה מן איתך הלכא ומא את עביד הכא ומה לך כדין:
kdyn lk wmh hka ebyd ath wma hlka aythk mn lyh wamrw lthmn wzrw lywah ewlyma ql yth ashthmwdew waynwn dmykh bytha em aynwn
When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite; so they went over there and said to him, “Who brought you here? What do you do in this place? What do you have here?”

ואמר להון כדין וכדין עבד לי מיכה ואגרני והוית ליה לכומרא:
lkwmra lyh whwyth wagrny mykh ly ebd wkdyn kdyn lhwn wamr
He said to them, “Thus and thus has Micah dealt with me, and he has hired me, and I have become his priest.”

ואמרו ליה שאיל כעל במימרא דיי ונידע התצלח אורחנא די אנחנא אזלין עלה:
elh azlyn ankhna dy awrkhna hthtslkh wnyde dyy bmymra kel shayl lyh wamrw
They said to him, “Please ask counsel of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.”

ואמר להון כהנא אזילו לשלם אתקין יי אורחתכון די תהכון בה:
bh thhkwn dy awrkhthkwn yy athqyn lshlm azylw khna lhwn wamr
The priest said to them, “Go in peace. Your way in which you go is before Yahweh.”

ואזלו חמשא גוברין ואתו לליש וחזו ית עמא די בגוה יתבין לרוחצן כהלכת צידונאי דשקטין ושרן לרוחצן ולית דמנזק פתגמא בארעא ירותין זעירין ורחיקין אינון מצידונאי ופתגם לית להון עם אנש:
ansh em lhwn lyth wpthgm mtsydwnay aynwn wrkhyqyn zeyryn yrwthyn barea pthgma dmnzq wlyth lrwkhtsn wshrn dshqTyn tsydwnay khlkth lrwkhtsn ythbyn bgwh dy ema yth wkhzw llysh wathw gwbryn khmsha wazlw
Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were there, how they lived in safety, in the way of the Sidonians, quiet and secure; for there was no one in the land possessing authority, that might put them to shame in anything, and they were far from the Sidonians, and had no dealings with anyone else.

ואתו לות אחוהון צרעה ואשתאול ואמרו להון אחוהון מה אתון:
athwn mh akhwhwn lhwn wamrw washthawl tsreh akhwhwn lwth wathw
They came to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol; and their brothers asked them, “What do you say?”

ואמרו קומו וניסק עליהון ארי חזינא ית ארעא והא טבא לחדא ואתון שתקין לא תתרשלון למיזל למיעל למירת ית ארעא:
area yth lmyrth lmyel lmyzl ththrshlwn la shthqyn wathwn lkhda Tba wha area yth khzyna ary elyhwn wnysq qwmw wamrw
They said, “Arise, and let’s go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. Do you stand still? Don’t be slothful to go and to enter in to possess the land.

כמיתיכון תעלון לות עמא דשרן לרוחצן וארעא פתיות ידין ארי מסרא יי בידיכון אתרא דלית תמן חסרן כל מדעם די בארעא:
barea dy mdem kl khsrn thmn dlyth athra bydykwn yy msra ary ydyn pthywth warea lrwkhtsn dshrn ema lwth thelwn kmythykwn
When you go, you will come to an unsuspecting people, and the land is large; for God has given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth.”

ונטלו מתמן מזרעית דן מצרעה ומאשתאל שית מאה גברין מזרזין במני קרבא:
qrba bmny mzrzyn gbryn mah shyth wmashthal mtsreh dn mzreyth mthmn wnTlw
The family of the Danites set out from Zorah and Eshtaol with six hundred men armed with weapons of war.

וסליקו ושרו בקרית יערים בארעא דבית יהודה על כן קרו לאתרא ההוא משרית דן עד יומא הדין הא הוא אחורי קרית יערים:
yerym qryth akhwry hwa ha hdyn ywma ed dn mshryth hhwa lathra qrw kn el yhwdh dbyth barea yerym bqryth wshrw wslyqw
They went up and encamped in Kiriath Jearim in Judah. Therefore they call that place Mahaneh Dan to this day. Behold, it is behind Kiriath Jearim.

ועברו מתמן לטורא דבית אפרים ואתו עד בית מיכה:
mykh byth ed wathw aprym dbyth lTwra mthmn webrw
They passed from there to the hill country of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah.

ואתיבו חמשא גובריא דאזלו לאללא ית ארעא ליש ואמרו לאחוהון הידעתון ארי אית בבתיא האלין אפוד ודמאין וצלים ומתכא וכען דעו מה תעבדון:
thebdwn mh dew wken wmthka wtslym wdmayn apwd halyn bbthya ayth ary hydethwn lakhwhwn wamrw lysh area yth lalla dazlw gwbrya khmsha wathybw
Then the five men who went to spy out the country of Laish answered and said to their brothers, “Do you know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a carved image, and a molten image? Now therefore consider what you have to do.”

וזרו לתמן ועלו לבית עולימא לואה בית מיכה ושאילו ליה לשלם:
lshlm lyh wshaylw mykh byth lwah ewlyma lbyth welw lthmn wzrw
They went over there and came to the house of the young Levite man, even to the house of Micah, and asked him how he was doing.

ושית מאה גברין מזרזין במני קרביהון קימין במעלנא דתרע דמשבט בני דן:
dn bny dmshbT dthre bmelna qymyn qrbyhwn bmny mzrzyn gbryn mah wshyth
The six hundred men armed with their weapons of war, who were of the children of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.

וסליקו חמשא גבריא דאזלו לאללא ית ארעא עלו לתמן ונסיבו ית צלמנא וית אפודא וית דמאין וית מתכא וכהנא קאים במעלנא דתרעא ושית מאה גברי דמזרזי במני קרבא:
qrba bmny dmzrzy gbry mah wshyth dthrea bmelna qaym wkhna mthka wyth dmayn wyth apwda wyth tslmna yth wnsybw lthmn elw area yth lalla dazlw gbrya khmsha wslyqw
The five men who went to spy out the land went up, and came in there, and took the engraved image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.

ואלין עלו לבית מיכה ונסיבו ית צלם אפודא וית דמאין וית מתכא ואמר להון כהנא מה אתון עבדין:
ebdyn athwn mh khna lhwn wamr mthka wyth dmayn wyth apwda tslm yth wnsybw mykh lbyth elw walyn
When these went into Micah’s house, and took the engraved image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”

ואמרו ליה שתוק שוי ידך על פומך ואזיל עמנא והוי לנא לאב ולכהנא הטב דתהי כהין לבית גברא חד או דתהי כהין לשבטא ולזרעית בישראל:
byshral wlzreyth lshbTa khyn dthhy aw khd gbra lbyth khyn dthhy hTb wlkhna lab lna whwy emna wazyl pwmk el ydk shwy shthwq lyh wamrw
They said to him, “Hold your peace, put your hand on your mouth, and go with us. Be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?”

ושפר לבא דכהנא ונסיב ית אפודא וית דמאין וית צלמא ועל בגו עמא:
ema bgw wel tslma wyth dmayn wyth apwda yth wnsyb dkhna lba wshpr
The priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, the teraphim, and the engraved image, and went with the people.

ואתפניאו ואזלו ושויאו ית טפליא וית בעירא וית קנינא קדמיהון:
qdmyhwn qnyna wyth beyra wyth Tplya yth wshwyaw wazlw wathpnyaw
So they turned and departed, and put the little ones, the livestock, and the goods before them.
22
אינון ארחיקו מבית מיכה וגבריא דבבתיא דעם בית מיכה אתכנישו ואדביקו ית בני דן:
dn bny yth wadbyqw athknyshw mykh byth dem dbbthya wgbrya mykh mbyth arkhyqw aynwn
When they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house gathered together and overtook the children of Dan.

וקרו לבני דן ואסחרו אפיהון ואמרו למיכה מה לך ארי אתכנישתא:
athknyshtha ary lk mh lmykh wamrw apyhwn waskhrw dn lbny wqrw
As they called to the children of Dan, they turned their faces, and said to Micah, “What ails you, that you come with such a company?”

ואמר ית דחלתי די עבדית נסיבתון וית כהנא ואזלתון ומה לי עוד ומה דין תימרון לי מה לך:
lk mh ly thymrwn dyn wmh ewd ly wmh wazlthwn khna wyth nsybthwn ebdyth dy dkhlthy yth wamr
He said, “You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and have gone away! What more do I have? How can you ask me, ‘What ails you?’”

ואמרו ליה בני דן לא תשמע קלך עמנא דלמא ישלטון בכון גברין מרירן נפשן ותסיף נפשך ונפש אנש ביתך:
bythk ansh wnpsh npshk wthsyp npshn mryrn gbryn bkwn yshlTwn dlma emna qlk thshme la dn bny lyh wamrw
The children of Dan said to him, “Don’t let your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall on you, and you lose your life, with the lives of your household.”

ואזלו בני דן לאורחיהון וחזא מיכה ארי תקיפין אינון מיניה ואתפני ותב לביתיה:
lbythyh wthb wathpny mynyh aynwn thqypyn ary mykh wkhza lawrkhyhwn dn bny wazlw
The children of Dan went their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.

ואינון נסיבו ית דעבד מיכה ודברו ית כהנא די הוה ליה ואתו לליש לעמא דשקטין ושרן לרוחצן ומחו יתהון לפתגם דחרב וית קרתא אוקידו בנורא:
bnwra awqydw qrtha wyth dkhrb lpthgm ythhwn wmkhw lrwkhtsn wshrn dshqTyn lema llysh wathw lyh hwh dy khna yth wdbrw mykh debd yth nsybw waynwn
They took that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and struck them with the edge of the sword; then they burned the city with fire.

ולית דמשיזיב ארי רחיקא היא מצידון ופתגם לית להון עם אנש ואינון במשר דלבית רחוב ובנו ית קרתא ויתיבו בה:
bh wythybw qrtha yth wbnw rkhwb dlbyth bmshr waynwn ansh em lhwn lyth wpthgm mtsydwn hya rkhyqa ary dmshyzyb wlyth
There was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with anyone else; and it was in the valley that lies by Beth Rehob. They built the city and lived in it.

וקרו שמא דקרתא דן בשום דן אבוהון דאתיליד לישראל וברם ליש שמא דקרתא מלקדמין:
mlqdmyn dqrtha shma lysh wbrm lyshral dathylyd abwhwn dn bshwm dn dqrtha shma wqrw
They called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; however the name of the city used to be Laish.

ואקימו להון בני דן ית צלמא ויהונתן בר גרשם בר מנשה הוא ובנוהי הוו כומרין לשבטא דבית דן עד יומא די גלו יתבי ארעא:
area ythby glw dy ywma ed dn dbyth lshbTa kwmryn hww wbnwhy hwa mnshh br grshm br wyhwnthn tslma yth dn bny lhwn waqymw
The children of Dan set up for themselves the engraved image; and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.
