ויפתח גלעדא הוה גבר חילא והוא בר אתתא פונדקיתא ואוליד גלעד ית יפתח:
ypthkh yth gled wawlyd pwndqytha aththa br whwa khyla gbr hwh gleda wypthkh
Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor. He was the son of a prostitute. Gilead became the father of Jephthah.

וילידת אתת גלעד ליה בנין ורביאו בני אתתא ותריכו ית יפתח ואמרו ליה לא תחסין בבית אבונא ארי בר אתתא אוחרי את:
ath awkhry aththa br ary abwna bbyth thkhsyn la lyh wamrw ypthkh yth wthrykw aththa bny wrbyaw bnyn lyh gled athth wylydth
Gilead’s wife bore him sons. When his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You will not inherit in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.”

וערק יפתח מן קדם אחוהי ויתיב בארעא טבא ואתכנישו לות יפתח גברין סריקין ונפקו עמיה:
emyh wnpqw sryqyn gbryn ypthkh lwth wathknyshw Tba barea wythyb akhwhy qdm mn ypthkh werq
Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob. Outlaws joined up with Jephthah, and they went out with him.

והוה מזמן יומין ואגיחו קרבא בני עמון עם ישראל:
yshral em emwn bny qrba wagykhw ywmyn mzmn whwh
After a while, the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
5
והוה כד אגיחו קרבא בני עמון עם ישראל ואזלו סבי גלעד למדבר ית יפתח מארע טב:
Tb mare ypthkh yth lmdbr gled sby wazlw yshral em emwn bny qrba agykhw kd whwh
When the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob.

ואמרו ליפתח איתא ותהי לנא לרבא ונגיח קרבא בבני עמון:
emwn bbny qrba wngykh lrba lna wthhy aytha lypthkh wamrw
They said to Jephthah, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.”

ואמר יפתח לסבי גלעד הלא אתון סניתון יתי ותריכתוני מבית אבא ומא דין אתיתון לותי כען כד עקת לכון:
lkwn eqth kd ken lwthy athythwn dyn wma aba mbyth wthrykthwny ythy snythwn athwn hla gled lsby ypthkh wamr
Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”

ואמרו סבי גלעד ליפתח בכן כען תבנא לותך ותהך עמנא ותגיח קרבא בבני עמון ותהי לנא לריש לכל יתבי גלעד:

The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us and fight with the children of Ammon. You will be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

ואמר יפתח לסבי גלעד אם מתיבין אתון יתי לאגחא קרבא בבני עמון וימסר יי יתהון קדמי אנא אהוי לכון לריש:
lrysh lkwn ahwy ana qdmy ythhwn yy wymsr emwn bbny qrba lagkha ythy athwn mthybyn am gled lsby ypthkh wamr
Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh delivers them before me, will I be your head?”

ואמרו סבי גלעד ליפתח מימרא דיי יהי סהיד ביננא אם לא כפתגמך כן נעבד:
nebd kn kpthgmk la am bynna shyd yhy dyy mymra lypthkh gled sby wamrw
The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Yahweh will be witness between us. Surely we will do what you say.”

ואזל יפתח עם סבי גלעד ומניאו עמא יתיה עליהון לריש ולרבא וסדר יפתח ית כל פתגמוהי קדם יי במצפיא:
bmtspya yy qdm pthgmwhy kl yth ypthkh wsdr wlrba lrysh elyhwn ythyh ema wmnyaw gled sby em ypthkh wazl
Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them. Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

ושלח יפתח אזגדין לות מלכא דבני עמון למימר מה לי ולך ארי אתיתא לותי לאגחא קרבא בארעי:
barey qrba lagkha lwthy athytha ary wlk ly mh lmymr emwn dbny mlka lwth azgdyn ypthkh wshlkh
Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What do you have to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”

ואמר מלכא דבני עמון לאזגדי יפתח ארי נסיב ישראל ית ארעי במסקיה ממצרים מארנונא ועד יובקא ועד ירדנא וכען אתיב יתהן בשלם:
bshlm ythhn athyb wken yrdna wed ywbqa wed marnwna mmtsrym bmsqyh arey yth yshral nsyb ary ypthkh lazgdy emwn dbny mlka wamr
The king of the children of Ammon answered the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan. Now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.”

ואוסיף עוד יפתח ושלח אזגדין לות מלכא דבני עמון:
emwn dbny mlka lwth azgdyn wshlkh ypthkh ewd wawsyp
Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon;
15
ואמר ליה כדנן אמר יפתח לא נסיב ישראל ית ארעא דמואב וית ארעא בני עמון:
emwn bny area wyth dmwab area yth yshral nsyb la ypthkh amr kdnn lyh wamr
and he said to him, “Jephthah says: Israel didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon;

ארי במסקהון ממצרים ואזל ישראל במדברא עד ימא דסוף ואתא לרקם:
lrqm watha dswp yma ed bmdbra yshral wazl mmtsrym bmsqhwn ary
but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh,

ושלח ישראל אזגדין לות מלכא דאדום למימר אעבר כען בארעך ולא שמע מלכא דאדום ואף לות מלכא דמואב שלח ולא קבל ויתיב ישראל ברקם:
brqm yshral wythyb qbl wla shlkh dmwab mlka lwth wap dadwm mlka shme wla barek ken aebr lmymr dadwm mlka lwth azgdyn yshral wshlkh
then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab, but he refused; so Israel stayed in Kadesh.

ואזל במדברא ואקיף ית ארע אדום וית ארע מואב ואתו ממדנח שמשא לארעא דמואב ושרו בעיברא דארנון ולא עלו בתחום מואב ארי ארנון תחום מואב:
mwab thkhwm arnwn ary mwab bthkhwm elw wla darnwn beybra wshrw dmwab larea shmsha mmdnkh wathw mwab are wyth adwm are yth waqyp bmdbra wazl
Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

ושלח ישראל אזגדין לות סיחון מלכא דאמוראה מלכא דחשבון ואמר ליה ישראל נעבר כען בארעך עד אתרי:
athry ed barek ken nebr yshral lyh wamr dkhshbwn mlka damwrah mlka sykhwn lwth azgdyn yshral wshlkh
Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’

ולא הימין סיחון ית ישראל למעבר בתחומיה וכנש סיחון ית כל עמיה ושרו ביהצה ואגיח קרבא עם ישראל:
yshral em qrba wagykh byhtsh wshrw emyh kl yth sykhwn wknsh bthkhwmyh lmebr yshral yth sykhwn hymyn wla
But Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

ומסר יי אלהא דישראל ית סיחון וית כל עמיה בידא דישראל ומחונון וירית ישראל ית כל ארע אמוראה יתיב ארעא ההיא:
hhya area ythyb amwrah are kl yth yshral wyryth wmkhwnwn dyshral byda emyh kl wyth sykhwn yth dyshral alha yy wmsr
Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them. So Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22
ויריתו ית כל תחום אמוראה מארנונא ועד יובקא ומן מדברא ועד ירדנא:
yrdna wed mdbra wmn ywbqa wed marnwna amwrah thkhwm kl yth wyrythw
They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.

וכען יי אלהא דישראל תריך ית אמוראה מן קדם עמיה ישראל ואת מדמי למירתיה:
lmyrthyh mdmy wath yshral emyh qdm mn amwrah yth thryk dyshral alha yy wken
So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?
24
הלא ית דיחסננך כמוש טעותך יתיה תחסין וית כל דתריך יי אלהנא מן קדמנא יתיה נירת:
nyrth ythyh qdmna mn alhna yy dthryk kl wyth thkhsyn ythyh Tewthk kmwsh dykhsnnk yth hla
Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.
25
וכען הטב טב את מבלק בר צפור מלכא דמואב המידן דן עם ישראל אם קרבא אגיח בהון:
bhwn agykh qrba am yshral em dn hmydn dmwab mlka tspwr br mblq ath Tb hTb wken
Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

כד יתיב ישראל בחשבון ובכפרנהא ובערעור ובכפרנהא ובכל קרויא דעל תחומי ארנון תלת מאה שנין ומא דין לא שזבתון בעדנא ההיא:
hhya bedna shzbthwn la dyn wma shnyn mah thlth arnwn thkhwmy del qrwya wbkl wbkprnha wberewr wbkprnha bkhshbwn yshral ythyb kd
Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along the side of the Arnon for three hundred years! Why didn’t you recover them within that time?
27
ואנא לא חטית לך ואת עביד עמי בישא לאגחא קרבא בי ידין יי דעבד דינא יומא דין בין בני ישראל ובין בני עמון:
emwn bny wbyn yshral bny byn dyn ywma dyna debd yy ydyn by qrba lagkha bysha emy ebyd wath lk khTyth la wana
Therefore I have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. May Yahweh the Judge be judge today between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.”
28
ולא קביל מלכא דבני עמון לפתגמי יפתח דשלח לותיה:
lwthyh dshlkh ypthkh lpthgmy emwn dbny mlka qbyl wla
However, the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29
ושרת על יפתח רוח גבורא מן קדם יי ועבר ית גלעד וית מנשה ועבר ית מצפיא דגלעד וממצפיא דגלעד עבר בני עמון:
emwn bny ebr dgled wmmtspya dgled mtspya yth webr mnshh wyth gled yth webr yy qdm mn gbwra rwkh ypthkh el wshrth
Then Yahweh’s Spirit came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.
30
וקים יפתח קים קדם יי ואמר אם ממסר תמסר ית בני עמון בידי:
bydy emwn bny yth thmsr mmsr am wamr yy qdm qym ypthkh wqym
Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

ויהי דיפוק מפק בר מדשי ביתי לקדמותי כד אתוב בשלם מבני עמון ויהי קדם יי ואסקיניה עלתא:
eltha wasqynyh yy qdm wyhy emwn mbny bshlm athwb kd lqdmwthy bythy mdshy br mpq dypwq wyhy
then it shall be, that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”
32
ועבר יפתח לות בני עמון לאגחא קרבא בהון ומסרינון יי בידיה:
bydyh yy wmsrynwn bhwn qrba lagkha emwn bny lwth ypthkh webr
So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand.
33
ומחנון מערוער עד מעלנא דמנית עשרין קרוין ועד מישר כרמיא מחתא רבתא לחדא ואתברו בני עמון מן קדם בני ישראל:
yshral bny qdm mn emwn bny wathbrw lkhda rbtha mkhtha krmya myshr wed qrwyn eshryn dmnyth melna ed merwer wmkhnwn
He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
34
ואתא יפתח למצפיא לביתיה והא ברתיה נפקת לקדמותיה בתפין ובחנגין ולחוד היא יחידה לית ליה מניה בר או ברת:
brth aw br mnyh lyh lyth ykhydh hya wlkhwd wbkhngyn bthpyn lqdmwthyh npqth brthyh wha lbythyh lmtspya ypthkh watha
Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

והוה כד חזי יתה ובזע ית לבושוהי ואמר ווי ברתי אכרעא אכרעתיני ואת הוית בעכרי ואנא פתחית פומי בנדר קדם יי ולא איכול למיתב:
lmythb aykwl wla yy qdm bndr pwmy pthkhyth wana bekry hwyth wath akrethyny akrea brthy wwy wamr lbwshwhy yth wbze ythh khzy kd whwh
When he saw her, he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can’t go back.”
36
ואמרת ליה אבא פתחתא ית פומך בנדר קדם יי עביד לי כמא די נפק מפומך בתר דעבד לך יי פורענותא מבעלי דבבך מבני עמון:
emwn mbny dbbk mbely pwrenwtha yy lk debd bthr mpwmk npq dy kma ly ebyd yy qdm bndr pwmk yth pthkhtha aba lyh wamrth
She said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.”
37
ואמרת לאבוהא יתעביד לי פתגמא הדין שבוק מני תרין ירחין ואהך ואתנגיד על טוריא ואבכה על בתולי אנא וחברתי:
wkhbrthy ana bthwly el wabkh Twrya el wathngyd wahk yrkhyn thryn mny shbwq hdyn pthgma ly ythebyd labwha wamrth
Then she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me. Leave me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”
38
ואמר אזילי ושלח יתה תרין ירחין ואזלת היא וחברתהא ובכת על בתולהא על טוריא:
Twrya el bthwlha el wbkth wkhbrthha hya wazlth yrkhyn thryn ythh wshlkh azyly wamr
He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.
39
והוה מסוף תרין ירחין ותבת לות אבוהא ועבד לה ית נדריה די נדר והיא לא ידעת גבר והות לגזירא בישראל: בדיל דלא לאסקא גבר ית בריה וית ברתיה לעלתא כמא דעבד יפתח גלעדאה ולא שאיל לפינחס כהנא ואילו שאיל לפינחס כהנא הוה פריק יתה בדמין:
bdmyn ythh pryq hwh khna lpynkhs shayl waylw khna lpynkhs shayl wla gledah ypthkh debd kma leltha brthyh wyth bryh yth gbr lasqa dla bdyl byshral lgzyra whwth gbr ydeth la whya ndr dy ndryh yth lh webd abwha lwth wthbth yrkhyn thryn mswp whwh
At the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. She was a virgin. It became a custom in Israel
