Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor. He was the son of a prostitute. Gilead became the father of Jephthah.

ܘܝܠܕܬ ܐܢܬܬܗ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܠܗ ܒ̈ܢܝܐ ܘܪܒܘ ܒܢܝ̈ܗ ܕܐܢܬܬܐ ܘܛܪܕܘܗܝ ܠܢܦܬܚ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܐ ܢܐܪܬ ܒܝܬ ܐܒܘܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܒܪ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܗܘ ܐܚܪܬܐ

Gilead’s wife bore him sons. When his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You will not inherit in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.”

ܘܥܪܩ ܢܦܬܚ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܐ̈ܚܘܗܝ ܘܐܝܬܒ ܒܐܪܥܐ ܛܒܬܐ ܘܐܬܠܩܛܘ ܠܘܬ ܢܦܬܚ ܐܢܫ̈ܐ ܣܪ̈ܝܩܐ ܘܢܦܩܘ ܥܡܗ

Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob. Outlaws joined up with Jephthah, and they went out with him.

ܘܗܘܐ ܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܝܘܡ̈ܬܐ ܘܐܬܟܬܫܘ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ ܥܡ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ

After a while, the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

ܘܟܕ ܐܬܟܬܫܘ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ ܥܡ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܙܠܘ ܩܫܝ̈ܫܐ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܠܡܕܒܪܗ ܠܢܦܬܚ ܡܢ ܐܪܥܐ ܛܒܬܐ

When the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob.

ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܢܦܬܚ ܬܐ ܗܘܝ ܠܢ ܪܝܫܐ ܘܢܬܟܬܫ ܥܡ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ

They said to Jephthah, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܢܦܬܚ ܠܩܫܝ̈ܫܐ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܠܐ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܣܢܝܬܘܢܢܝ ܘܛܪܕܬܘܢܢܝ ܡܢ ܒܝܬ ܐܒܝ ܘܗܫܐ ܡܢܐ ܐܬܝܬܘܢ ܠܘܬܝ ܟܕ ܥܩܬ ܠܟܘܢ

Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”

ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܩܫܝܫ̈ܐ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܠܢܦܬܚ ܡܛܠ ܗܢܐ ܗܫܐ ܗܐ ܐܬܝܢ ܠܘܬܟ ܙܠ ܥܡܢ ܘܢܬܟܬܫ ܥܡ ܒ̈ܢܝ ܥܡܘܢ ܘܗܘܝ ܪܝܫܐ ܠܟܠ ܝܬܒ̈ܝ ܓܠܥܕ

The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us and fight with the children of Ammon. You will be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܢܦܬܚ ܠܩ̈ܫܝܫܐ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܐܢ ܡܗܦܟܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܠܝ ܕܐܬܟܬܫ ܥܡ ܒ̈ܢܝ ܥܡܘܢ ܘܡܫܠܡ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܪܝܐ ܩܕܡܝ ܐܢܐ ܐܗܘܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܪܝܫܐ

Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh delivers them before me, will I be your head?”

ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܩܫܝܫ̈ܐ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܡܪܝܐ ܢܗܘܐ ܫܡܘܥܐ ܒܝܢܬܢ ܐܠܐ ܐܝܟ ܡܠܬܟ ܗܟܢܐ ܢܥܒܕ

The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Yahweh will be witness between us. Surely we will do what you say.”

ܘܐܙܠ ܢܦܬܚ ܥܡ ܩܫܝ̈ܫܐ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܘܐܩܝܡܘܗܝ ܥܠܝܗܘܢ ܪܝܫܐ ܘܫܠܝܛܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܢܦܬܚ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܡ̈ܠܘܗܝ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ ܒܡܨܦܝܐ

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them. Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

ܘܫܕܪ ܢܦܬܚ ܐܝ̈ܙܓܕܐ ܠܘܬ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ ܠܡܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܡܐ ܠܝ ܘܠܟ ܕܐܬܝܬ ܠܡܬܟܬܫܘ ܒܐܪܥܝ

Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What do you have to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”

ܘܐܡܪ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܒܢܝ̈ ܥܡܘܢ ܠܐܝ̈ܙܓܕܘܗܝ ܕܢܦܬܚ ܡܛܠ ܕܢܣܒܘ ܗܘܘ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܪܥܝ ܟܕ ܣܠܩܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܡܢ ܐܪܥܐ ܕܡܨܪܝܢ ܡܢ ܐܪܢܘܢ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܐܒܩ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܝܘܪܕܢܢ ܗܫܐ ܦܢܐ ܐܢܝ̈ܢ ܠܝ ܒܫܠܡܐ

The king of the children of Ammon answered the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan. Now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.”

ܘܗܦܟ ܬܘܒ ܢܦܬܚ ܘܫܕܪ ܐܓܪܬܐ ܘܐܝ̈ܙܓܕܐ ܠܘܬ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ

Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon;

ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܗܟܢܐ ܐܡܪ ܢܦܬܚ ܠܐ ܢܣܒ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܪܥܐ ܕܡܘܐܒ ܘܐܪܥܐ ܕܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ

and he said to him, “Jephthah says: Israel didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon;

ܡܛܠ ܕܟܕ ܣܠܩܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܡܢ ܡܨܪܝܢ ܗܠܟܘ ܗܘܘ ܒ̈ܢܝ ܐܝܣܪܐܝܠ ܒܡܕܒܪܐ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܝܡܐ ܕܣܘܦ ܘܡܛܝܘ ܠܪܩܡ

but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh,

ܘܫܕܪ ܗܘܐ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܝ̈ܙܓܕܐ ܠܘܬ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܐܕܘܡ ܠܡܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܢܥܒܪ ܒܐܪܥܟ ܘܠܐ ܫܡܥ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܐܕܘܡ ܘܐܦ ܠܡܠܟܐ ܕܡܘܐܒ ܫܠܚ ܘܠܐ ܐܬܛܦܝܣ ܠܗ ܘܐܝܬܒ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܒܪܩܡ

then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab, but he refused; so Israel stayed in Kadesh.

ܘܗܠܟ ܒܡܕܒܪܐ ܘܐܬܟܪܟ ܐܪܥܐ ܕܐܕܘܡ ܘܐܪܥܐ ܕܡܘܐܒ ܘܫܪܘ ܒܥܒܪܐ ܕܐܪܢܘܢ ܘܠܐ ܥܠܘ ܒܬܚܘܡܐ ܕܡܘܐܒ ܡܛܘܠ ܕܐܪܢܘܢ ܬܚܘܡܐ ܗܘܐ ܕܡܘܐܒ

Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

ܘܫܕܪ ܗܘܐ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܝܙ̈ܓܕܐ ܠܘܬ ܣܝܚܘܢ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܐܡܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܘܡܠܟܐ ܕܚܫܒܘܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܢܥܒܪ ܒܐܪܥܟ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܐܪܥܝ

Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’

ܘܠܐ ܗܝܡܢ ܣܝܚܘܢ ܠܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܕܢܥܒܪ ܒܬܚܘܡܗ ܘܟܢܫ ܣܝܚܘܢ ܠܟܠܗ ܥܡܗ ܘܫܪܘ ܒܝܗܨ ܘܐܬܟܬܫ ܥܡ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ

But Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

ܘܐܫܠܡ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܢ ܠܣܝܚܘܢ ܘܠܟܠܗ ܥܡܗ ܒܐܝܕܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܐܘܒܕ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܪܥܐ ܕܐܡܘܪ̈ܝܐ
w'shlm mry' 'lhn lsykhwn wlklh emh b'yd' d'ysryl w'wbd 'ysryl 're' d'mwry'
Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them. So Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

ܘܐܝܪܬ ܟܠܗ ܬܚܘܡܗܘܢ ܡܢ ܐܪܢܘܢ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܐܒܩ ܘܡܢ ܡܕܒܪܐ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܝܘܪܕܢܢ
w'yrth klh thkhwmhwn mn 'rnwn wedm' l'bq wmn mdbr' wedm' lywrdnn
They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.

ܘܗܫܐ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܐܘܒܕ ܠܐܡܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܥܡܗ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܐܢܬ ܝܪܬ ܐܢܬ ܠܗܘܢ

So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?

ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܡܕܡ ܕܐܘܪܬܟ ܟܡܘܫ ܐܠܗܟ ܝܪܬ ܐܢܬ ܘܡܕܡ ܕܐܘܒܕ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܢ ܡܢ ܩܕܡܝܢ ܠܗ ܗܘ ܝܪܬܝܢ ܚܢܢ
l' hw' mdm d'wrthk kmwsh 'lhk yrth 'nth wmdm d'wbd mry' 'lhn mn qdmyn lh hw yrthyn khnn
Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

ܗܫܐ ܡܛܒ ܛܒ ܐܢܬ ܡܢ ܒܠܩ ܒܪ ܨܦܘܪ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܡܘܐܒ ܕܠܡܐ ܡܬܚܪܝܘ ܐܬܚܪܝ ܗܘܐ ܥܡ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܘ ܡܬܟܬܫܘ ܐܬܟܬܫ ܗܘܐ ܥܡܗܘܢ
hsh' mTb Tb 'nth mn blq br tspwr mlk' dmw'b dlm' mthkhryw 'thkhry hw' em 'ysryl 'w mthkthshw 'thkthsh hw' emhwn
Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

ܟܕ ܝܬܒ ܐܝܣܪܐܝܠ ܒܚܫܒܘܢ ܘܒܟܦܪ̈ܘܢܝܗ ܘܒܥܕܘܥܝܪ ܘܒܟܦܪ̈ܘܢܝܗ ܘܒܟܠܗܝܢ ܩܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܕܥܠ ܓܢܒ ܐܪܢܘܢ ܬܠܬܡܐܐ ܫܢܝ̈ܢ ܠܡܢܐ ܠܐ ܐܥܕܝܬܘܢ ܐ̈ܢܝܢ ܒܙܒܢܐ ܗܘ
kd ythb 'ysr'yl bkhshbwn wbkprwnyh wbedweyr wbkprwnyh wbklhyn qwry' del gnb 'rnwn thlthm'' shnyn lmn' l' 'edythwn 'nyn bzbn' hw
Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along the side of the Arnon for three hundred years! Why didn’t you recover them within that time?

ܐܠܐ ܐܢܐ ܗܫܐ ܠܐ ܚܛܝܬ ܠܟ ܘܐܢܬ ܥܒܕ ܐܢܬ ܥܡܝ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܠܡܬܟܬܫܘ ܥܡܝ ܢܕܘܢ ܡܪܝܐ ܝܘܡܢܐ ܕܝܢܐ ܒܝܢܝ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܠܒܝܬ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ
'l' 'n' hsh' l' khTyth lk w'nth ebd 'nth emy byshth' lmthkthshw emy ndwn mry' ywmn' dyn' byny bny 'ysryl wlbyth bny emwn
Therefore I have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. May Yahweh the Judge be judge today between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.”

ܘܠܐ ܫܡܥ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ ܡ̈ܠܘܗܝ ܕܢܦܬܚ ܕܫܠܚ ܠܗ

However, the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

ܘܗܘܬ ܥܠ ܢܦܬܚ ܪܘܚܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܘܥܒܪ ܠܓܠܥܕ ܘܠܡܢܫܐ ܘܥܒܪ ܠܡܨܦܝܐ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܘܡܢ ܡܨܦܝܐ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܥܒܪ ܠܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ

Then Yahweh’s Spirit came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.

ܘܢܕܪ ܢܦܬܚ ܢܕܪܐ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܢ ܡܫܠܡܘ ܬܫܠܡ ܠܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ ܒܐ̈ܝܕܝ

Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

ܡ̇ܢ ܕܢܦܩ ܡܢ ܬܪܥܐ ܕܒܝܬܝ ܠܐܘܪܥܝ ܡܐ ܕܐܬܝܬ ܒܫܠܡܐ ܡܢ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ ܢܗܘܐ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܘܐܣܩܝܘܗܝ ܠܥܠܬܐ
mn dnpq mn thre' dbythy l'wrey m' d'thyth bshlm' mn bny emwn nhw' lmry' w'sqywhy lelth'
then it shall be, that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

ܘܥܒܪ ܢܦܬܚ ܥܠ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ ܠܡܬܟܬܫܘ ܥܡܗܘܢ ܘܐܫܠܡ ܐܢܘܢ ܡܪܝܐ ܒܐܝܕܗ

So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand.

ܘܡܚܐ ܐܢܘܢ ܡܢ ܥܕܘܥܝܪ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܡܥܠܢܐ ܕܡܟܝܪ ܥܣܪ̈ܝܢ ܩܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܐܒܠ ܟܪ̈ܡܝܢ ܡܚܘܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܕܛܒ ܘܐܬܬܒܪܘ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ ܩܕܡ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ
wmkh' 'nwn mn edweyr wedm' lmeln' dmkyr esryn qwry' wedm' l'bl krmyn mkhwth' rbth' dTb w'ththbrw bny emwn qdm bny 'ysryl
He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

ܘܐܬܐ ܢܦܬܚ ܠܡܨܦܝܐ ܠܒܝܬܗ ܘܗܐ ܒܪܬܗ ܢܦܩܬ ܠܐܘܪܥܗ ܒ̈ܦܠܓܐ ܘܒܪ̈ܒܝܥܐ ܘܗܝ ܝܚܝܕܝܬܐ ܗܘܬ ܠܗ ܘܠܝܬ ܗܘܐ ܠܗ ܒܪܐ ܐܘ ܒܪܬܐ ܠܒܪ ܡܢܗ̇

Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

ܘܟܕ ܚܙܗ̇ ܨܪܝ ܠܒܘܫ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܘܗ ܒܪܬܝ ܡܣܚܦ ܣܚܦܬܝܢܝ ܘܐܢܬ ܗܘܝܬܝ ܝܘܡܢܐ ܡܢ ܣܚ̈ܘܦܝ ܕܗܐ ܐܢܐ ܦܬܚܬ ܦܘܡܝ ܠܘܬ ܐܠܗܐ ܘܠܐ ܡܫܟܚ ܐܢܐ ܕܐܗܦܘܟ

ܘܐܡܪܬ ܠܗ ܒܪܬܗ ܐܒܝ ܦܬܚܬ ܦܘܡܟ ܠܘܬ ܐܠܗܐ ܥܒܕ ܠܝ ܐܝܟ ܡܕܡ ܕܢܦܩ ܡܢ ܦܘܡܟ ܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܕܥܒܕ ܠܟ ܡܪܝܐ ܢܩܡܬܐ ܡܢ ܒ̈ܥܠܕܒܒܝܟ ܡܢ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܘܢ
w'mrth lh brthh 'by pthkhth pwmk lwth 'lh' ebd ly 'yk mdm dnpq mn pwmk mn bthr debd lk mry' nqmth' mn beldbbyk mn bny emwn
She said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.”

ܘܐܡܪܐ ܠܐܒܘܗ ܒܠܚܘܕ ܥܒܕ ܠܝ ܗܕܐ ܐܪܦܢܝ ܬܪ̈ܝܢ ܝܪ̈ܚܝܢ ܘܐܙܠ ܐܗܠܟ ܥܠ ܛܘܪ̈ܐ ܘܐܒܟܐ ܥܠ ܒܬܘܠܘܬܝ ܐܢܐ ܘܚܒܪ̈ܬܝ
w'mr' l'bwh blkhwd ebd ly hd' 'rpny thryn yrkhyn w'zl 'hlk el Twr' w'bk' el bthwlwthy 'n' wkhbrthy
Then she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me. Leave me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ̇ ܙܠ ܘܫܕܪܗ̇ ܬܪ̈ܝܢ ܝܪ̈ܚܝܢ ܘܐܙܠܬ ܗܝ ܘܚܒܪ̈ܬܗ̇ ܘܒܟܬ ܥܠ ܒܬܘܠܘܬܗ̇ ܥܠ ܛܘܪ̈ܐ

He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.

ܘܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܬܪ̈ܝܢ ܝܪ̈ܚܝܢ ܐܬܬ ܠܘܬ ܐܒܘܗ ܘܥܒܕ ܠܗ̇ ܐܝܟ ܢܕܪܐ ܕܢܕܪ ܘܗܝ ܠܐ ܚܟܡܗ̇ ܓܒܪ ܘܗܘܬ ܠܗ ܐܬܐ ܒܝܢܝ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ

At the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. She was a virgin. It became a custom in Israel
