והוה כד שמעו כל מלכיא די בעברא דירדנא בטורא ובשפלתא ובכל ספר ימא רבא די לקביל ליבנן חתאי ואמוראי כנענאי פריזאי חואי ויבוסאי:
wybwsay khway pryzay knenay wamwray khthay lybnn lqbyl dy rba yma spr wbkl wbshpltha bTwra dyrdna bebra dy mlkya kl shmew kd whwh
When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it

ואתכנשו כחדא לאגחא קרבא עם יהושע ועם ישראל סיעא חדא:
khda syea yshral wem yhwshe em qrba lagkha kkhda wathknshw
they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

ויתבי גבעון שמעו ית די עבד יהושע ליריחו ולעי:
wley lyrykhw yhwshe ebd dy yth shmew gbewn wythby
But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,

ועבדו אף אינון בחוכמא ואזדודו ונסיבו שקין בלן לחמריהון וזיקין דחמר בלן ומבזעין ומצררין:
wmtsrryn wmbzeyn bln dkhmr wzyqyn lkhmryhwn bln shqyn wnsybw wazdwdw bkhwkma aynwn ap webdw
they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and old, torn-up and bound up wineskins,

ומסנן בלן ומרקעין ברגליהון וכסותא בליא עליהון וכל לחם זודיהון יבש הוה כסנין:
ksnyn hwh ybsh zwdyhwn lkhm wkl elyhwn blya wkswtha brglyhwn wmrqeyn bln wmsnn
and old and patched sandals on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.

ואזלו לות יהושע למשריתא לגלגלא ואמרו ליה ולאנש ישראל מארעא רחיקא אתינא וכען גזרו לנא קים:
qym lna gzrw wken athyna rkhyqa marea yshral wlansh lyh wamrw lglgla lmshrytha yhwshe lwth wazlw
They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us.”

ואמרו אנש ישראל לחואה דלמא ביננא אתון יתבון ואיכדין נגזר לכון קים:
qym lkwn ngzr waykdyn ythbwn athwn bynna dlma lkhwah yshral ansh wamrw
The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “What if you live among us? How could we make a covenant with you?”

ואמרו ליהושע עבדך אנחנא ואמר להון יהושע מן אתון ומנן אתיתון:
athythwn wmnn athwn mn yhwshe lhwn wamr ankhna ebdk lyhwshe wamrw
They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where do you come from?”

ואמרו ליה מארע רחיקא לחדא אתו עבדך לשמא דיי אלהך ארי שמענא ית שמע גבורתיה וית כל דעבד במצרים:
bmtsrym debd kl wyth gbwrthyh shme yth shmena ary alhk dyy lshma ebdk athw lkhda rkhyqa mare lyh wamrw
They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt,

וית כל דעבד לתרין מלכי אמוראי די בעברא דירדנא לסיחון מלכא דחשבון ולעוג מלכא דמתנן דבעשתרות:
dbeshthrwth dmthnn mlka wlewg dkhshbwn mlka lsykhwn dyrdna bebra dy amwray mlky lthryn debd kl wyth
and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

ואמרו לנא סבנא וכל יתבי ארענא למימר סבו בידכון זודין לאורחא ואזילו לקדמותהון ותימרון להון עבדיכון אנחנא וכען גזורו לנא קים:
qym lna gzwrw wken ankhna ebdykwn lhwn wthymrwn lqdmwthhwn wazylw lawrkha zwdyn bydkwn sbw lmymr arena ythby wkl sbna lna wamrw
Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take supplies in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them. Tell them, “We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us.”’

דין לחמנא כד חמים אזדודנא יתיה מבתנא ביום מפקנא למיתי לותכון וכען הא יבש והוה כסנין:
ksnyn whwh ybsh ha wken lwthkwn lmythy mpqna bywm mbthna ythyh azdwdna khmym kd lkhmna dyn
This our bread we took hot for our supplies out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become moldy.

ואלין זיקין דחמר די מלינא כד חדתין והא אתבזעו ואלין תותבנא ומסננא בליאו מסגי אורחא לחדא:
lkhda awrkha msgy blyaw wmsnna thwthbna walyn athbzew wha khdthyn kd mlyna dy dkhmr zyqyn walyn
These wineskins, which we filled, were new; and behold, they are torn. These our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey.”

וקבילו גבריא לפתגמיהון ואולפן מן קדם יי לא תבעו:
thbew la yy qdm mn wawlpn lpthgmyhwn gbrya wqbylw
The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth.
15
ועבד להון יהושע שלם וגזר להון קים לקימותהון וקיימו להו רברבי כנשתא:
knshtha rbrby lhw wqyymw lqymwthhwn qym lhwn wgzr shlm yhwshe lhwn webd
Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them.

והוה מסוף תלתא יומין בתר דגזרו להון קים ושמעו ארי קריבין אינון ליה וביניהון אינון יתבין:
ythbyn aynwn wbynyhwn lyh aynwn qrybyn ary wshmew qym lhwn dgzrw bthr ywmyn thltha mswp whwh
At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.

ונטלו בני ישראל ואתו לקרויהון ביומא תליתאה וקרויהון גבעון וכפירה ובארות וקרית יערים:
yerym wqryth wbarwth wkpyrh gbewn wqrwyhwn thlythah bywma lqrwyhwn wathw yshral bny wnTlw
The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.

ולא מחונון בני ישראל ארי קיימו להון רברבי כנשתא במימרא דיי אלהא דישראל ואתרעמו כל כנשתא על רברביא:
rbrbya el knshtha kl wathremw dyshral alha dyy bmymra knshtha rbrby lhwn qyymw ary yshral bny mkhwnwn wla
The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes.

ואמרו כל רברביא לכל כנשתא אנחנא קיימנא להון במימרא דיי אלהא דישראל וכען לא נכול לאנזקא בהון:
bhwn lanzqa nkwl la wken dyshral alha dyy bmymra lhwn qyymna ankhna knshtha lkl rbrbya kl wamrw
But all the princes said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. Now therefore we may not touch them.
20
דא נעביד להון ונקים יתהון ולא יהי עלנא רגזא על קימא די קיימנא להון:
lhwn qyymna dy qyma el rgza elna yhy wla ythhwn wnqym lhwn nebyd da
We will do this to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”

ואמרו להון רברביא ייחון והוו מלקטי אעין ומלן מיא לכל כנשתא כמא דמלילו להון רברביא:
rbrbya lhwn dmlylw kma knshtha lkl mya wmln aeyn mlqTy whww yykhwn rbrbya lhwn wamrw
The princes said to them, “Let them live.” So they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them.

וקרא להון יהושע ומליל עמהון למימר למא שקרתון בנא למימר רחיקין אנחנא מנכון לחדא ואתון ביננא יתבין:
ythbyn bynna wathwn lkhda mnkwn ankhna rkhyqyn lmymr bna shqrthwn lma lmymr emhwn wmlyl yhwshe lhwn wqra
Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you live among us?
23
וכען ליטין אתון ולא יפסקון מנכון עבדין ומלקטי אעין ומלן מיא לבית מקדשא דאלהי:
dalhy mqdsha lbyth mya wmln aeyn wmlqTy ebdyn mnkwn ypsqwn wla athwn lyTyn wken
Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be slaves, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God.”

ואתיבו ית יהושע ואמרו ארי חואה אתחוא לעבדך ית דפקד יי אלהך ית משה עבדיה למתן לכון ית כל ארעא ולשיצאה ית כל יתבי ארעא מן קדמיכון ודחילנא לחדא לנפשתנא מן קדמיכון ועבדנא ית פתגמא הדין:
hdyn pthgma yth webdna qdmykwn mn lnpshthna lkhda wdkhylna qdmykwn mn area ythby kl yth wlshytsah area kl yth lkwn lmthn ebdyh mshh yth alhk yy dpqd yth lebdk athkhwa khwah ary wamrw yhwshe yth wathybw
They answered Joshua, and said, “Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
25
וכען הא אנחנא מסירין בידך כמא דתקין וכמא דכשר בעינך למעבד לנא עבד:
ebd lna lmebd beynk dkshr wkma dthqyn kma bydk msyryn ankhna ha wken
Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do.”

ועבד להון כן ושזיב יתהון מיד בני ישראל ולא קטלונון:
qTlwnwn wla yshral bny myd ythhwn wshzyb kn lhwn webd
He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them.
27
ומנינון יהושע ביומא ההוא לקטי אעין ומלן מיא לכנשתא ולמדבחא דיי עד יומא הדין לאתרא די יתרעי:
ythrey dy lathra hdyn ywma ed dyy wlmdbkha lknshtha mya wmln aeyn lqTy hhwa bywma yhwshe wmnynwn
That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for Yahweh’s altar to this day, in the place which he should choose.
