ואמר יי ליהושע לא תדחל ולא תתבר דבר עמך ית כל עמא עבדי קרבא וקום סק לעי חזי דמסרית בידך ית מלכא דעי וית עמיה ית קרתיה וית ארעיה:
areyh wyth qrthyh yth emyh wyth dey mlka yth bydk dmsryth khzy ley sq wqwm qrba ebdy ema kl yth emk dbr ththbr wla thdkhl la lyhwshe yy wamr
Yahweh said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed. Take all the warriors with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land.

ותעביד לעי ולמלכה כמא דעבדת ליריחו ולמלכה לחוד עדאה ובעירה תבזון לכון אתקן לך כמנא לקרתא מאחוראה:
makhwrah lqrtha kmna lk athqn lkwn thbzwn wbeyrh edah lkhwd wlmlkh lyrykhw debdth kma wlmlkh ley wthebyd
You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except you shall take its goods and its livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”

וקם יהושע וכל עמא עבדי קרבא למיסק לעי ובחר יהושע תלתין אלפין גברא גברי חילא ושלחינון בליליא:
blylya wshlkhynwn khyla gbry gbra alpyn thlthyn yhwshe wbkhr ley lmysq qrba ebdy ema wkl yhwshe wqm
So Joshua arose, with all the warriors, to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them out by night.

ופקיד יתהון למימר חזו דאתון כמנין לקרתא מאחורי קרתא לא תרחיקון מן קרתא לחדא ותהון כולכון מתקניא:
mthqnya kwlkwn wthhwn lkhda qrtha mn thrkhyqwn la qrtha makhwry lqrtha kmnyn dathwn khzw lmymr ythhwn wpqyd
He commanded them, saying, “Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Don’t go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.

ואנא וכל עמא דעמי נתקרב לקרתא ויהי ארי יפקון לקדמתנא כדבקדמיתא ונפוך קדמיהון:
qdmyhwn wnpwk kdbqdmytha lqdmthna ypqwn ary wyhy lqrtha nthqrb demy ema wkl wana
I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them.

ויפקון בתרנא עד דנגוד יתהון מן קרתא ארי יימרון תבירין קדמנא כדבקדמיתא ונפוך קדמיהון:
qdmyhwn wnpwk kdbqdmytha qdmna thbyryn yymrwn ary qrtha mn ythhwn dngwd ed bthrna wypqwn
They will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, like the first time.’ So we will flee before them,

ואתון תקומון מכמנא ותתרכון ית קרתא וימסרנה יי אלהכון בידכון:
bydkwn alhkwn yy wymsrnh qrtha yth wththrkwn mkmna thqwmwn wathwn
and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for Yahweh your God will deliver it into your hand.

ויהי כמיחדכון ית קרתא תדלקון ית קרתא בנורא כפתגמא דיי תעבדון חזו דפקדית יתכון:
ythkwn dpqdyth khzw thebdwn dyy kpthgma bnwra qrtha yth thdlqwn qrtha yth kmykhdkwn wyhy
It shall be, when you have seized the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do this according to Yahweh’s word. Behold, I have commanded you.”

ושלחינון יהושע ואזלו לכמנא ויתבו בין בית אל ובין עי מערב לעי ובת יהושע בליליא ההוא בגו עמא:
ema bgw hhwa blylya yhwshe wbth ley merb ey wbyn al byth byn wythbw lkmna wazlw yhwshe wshlkhynwn
Joshua sent them out; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai on the west side of Ai; but Joshua stayed among the people that night.

ואקדים יהושע בצפרא ומנא ית עמא וסליק הוא וסבי ישראל קדם עמא לעי:
ley ema qdm yshral wsby hwa wslyq ema yth wmna btspra yhwshe waqdym
Joshua rose up early in the morning, mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

וכל עמא עבדי קרבא דעמיה סליקו ואתקרבו ואתו לקבל קרתא ושרו מצפונא לעי וחילתא בינוהי ובין עי:
ey wbyn bynwhy wkhyltha ley mtspwna wshrw qrtha lqbl wathw wathqrbw slyqw demyh qrba ebdy ema wkl
All the people, even the men of war who were with him, went up and came near, and came before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.

ודבר כחמשא אלפין גברא ושוי יתהון כמנא בין בית אל ובין עי ממערב לעי:
ley mmerb ey wbyn al byth byn kmna ythhwn wshwy gbra alpyn kkhmsha wdbr
He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

ושויאו עמא ית כל משריתא דמצפונא לקרתא וית כמניה מערב לקרתא ואזל יהושע בליליא ההוא בגו מישרא:
myshra bgw hhwa blylya yhwshe wazl lqrtha merb kmnyh wyth lqrtha dmtspwna mshrytha kl yth ema wshwyaw
So they set the people, even all the army who was on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the middle of the valley.

והוה כד חזא מלכא דעי ואוחיאו ואקדימו ונפקו אנשי קרתא לקדמות ישראל לאגחא קרבא הוא וכל עמיה לזמנא דמתקן ליה לקדם מישרא ואינון לא ידעין ארי כמנא להון מאחורי קרתא:
qrtha makhwry lhwn kmna ary ydeyn la waynwn myshra lqdm lyh dmthqn lzmna emyh wkl hwa qrba lagkha yshral lqdmwth qrtha anshy wnpqw waqdymw wawkhyaw dey mlka khza kd whwh
When the king of Ai saw it, they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

ואתברו יהושע וכל ישראל קדמיהון ואפכו לאורח מדברא:
mdbra lawrkh wapkw qdmyhwn yshral wkl yhwshe wathbrw
Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
16
ואתכנישו כל עמא די בקרתא בעי למרדף בתריהון ורדפו בתר יהושע ואתנגידו מן קרתא:
qrtha mn wathngydw yhwshe bthr wrdpw bthryhwn lmrdp bey bqrtha dy ema kl wathknyshw
All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

ולא אשתאר אנש בעי ובית אל דלא נפקו בתר ישראל ושבקו ית קרתא כד פתיחא ורדפו בתר ישראל:
yshral bthr wrdpw pthykha kd qrtha yth wshbqw yshral bthr npqw dla al wbyth bey ansh ashthar wla
There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who didn’t go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.

ואמר יי ליהושע ארים ברומחא די בידך על עי ארי בידך אמסרינה וארים יהושע ברומחא דבידיה על קרתא:
qrtha el dbydyh brwmkha yhwshe warym amsrynh bydk ary ey el bydk dy brwmkha arym lyhwshe yy wamr
Yahweh said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

וכמנא קם בפריע מאתריה ורהטו כדארים ידיה ועלו לקרתא וכבשוה ואוחיאו ואדליקו ית קרתא בנורא:
bnwra qrtha yth wadlyqw wawkhyaw wkbshwh lqrtha welw ydyh kdarym wrhTw mathryh bprye qm wkmna
The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand and entered into the city and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire.

ואתפניאו אנשי עי לאחוריהן וחזו והא סליק תננא דקרתא לצית שמיא ולא הוה בהון חילא למערק לכא ולכא ועמא דאפיך למדברא אתחזר על רדפא:
rdpa el athkhzr lmdbra dapyk wema wlka lka lmerq khyla bhwn hwh wla shmya ltsyth dqrtha thnna slyq wha wkhzw lakhwryhn ey anshy wathpnyaw
When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.

ויהושע וכל ישראל חזו ארי כבש כמנא ית קרתא וארי סליק תננא דקרתא ותבו ומחו ית אנשי עי:
ey anshy yth wmkhw wthbw dqrtha thnna slyq wary qrtha yth kmna kbsh ary khzw yshral wkl wyhwshe
When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned back and killed the men of Ai.

ואלין נפקו מן קרתא לקדמותהון והוו לישראל במציעא אלין מכא ואלין מכא ומחו יתהון עד דלא אשתאר להון שאר ומשזיב:
wmshzyb shar lhwn ashthar dla ed ythhwn wmkhw mka walyn mka alyn bmtsyea lyshral whww lqdmwthhwn qrtha mn npqw walyn
The others came out of the city against them, so they were in the middle of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. They struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
23
וית מלכא דעי אחדו כד חי וקריבו יתיה לות יהושע:
yhwshe lwth ythyh wqrybw khy kd akhdw dey mlka wyth
They captured the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.
24
והוה כד שיצי ישראל לקטלא ית כל יתבי עי בחקלא במדברא די רדפונון ביה ואתקטלו כולהון לפתגם דחרב עד דשלימו ותבו כל ישראל לעי ומחו יתה לפתגם דחרב:
dkhrb lpthgm ythh wmkhw ley yshral kl wthbw dshlymw ed dkhrb lpthgm kwlhwn wathqTlw byh rdpwnwn dy bmdbra bkhqla ey ythby kl yth lqTla yshral shytsy kd whwh
When Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them, and they had all fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword.

והוו כל דאתקטלו ביומא ההוא מגבר ועד אתתא תרי עשר אלפין כל אנשי עי:
ey anshy kl alpyn eshr thry aththa wed mgbr hhwa bywma dathqTlw kl whww
All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the people of Ai.
26
ויהושע לא אתיב ידיה דארים ברומחא עד דגמר ית כל יתבי עי:
ey ythby kl yth dgmr ed brwmkha darym ydyh athyb la wyhwshe
For Joshua didn’t draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
27
לחוד בעירא ועדי קרתא ההיא בזו להון ישראל בפתגמא דיי דפקיד ית יהושע:
yhwshe yth dpqyd dyy bpthgma yshral lhwn bzw hhya qrtha wedy beyra lkhwd
Israel took for themselves only the livestock and the goods of that city, according to Yahweh’s word which he commanded Joshua.

ואוקיד יהושע ית עי ושויה תל חריב לעלם לצדו עד יומא הדין:
hdyn ywma ed ltsdw lelm khryb thl wshwyh ey yth yhwshe wawqyd
So Joshua burned Ai and made it a heap forever, even a desolation, to this day.
29
וית מלכא דעי צלב על צליבא עד עידן רמשא וכמיעל שמשא פקד יהושע ואחיתו ית נבלתיה מן צליבא ורמו יתיה במעלנא תרע קרתא ואקימו עלוהי דגור אבנין רב עד יומא הדין:
hdyn ywma ed rb abnyn dgwr elwhy waqymw qrtha thre bmelna ythyh wrmw tslyba mn nblthyh yth wakhythw yhwshe pqd shmsha wkmyel rmsha eydn ed tslyba el tslb dey mlka wyth
He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until the evening. At sundown, Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised a great heap of stones on it that remains to this day.
30
בכן בנא יהושע מדבחא קדם יי אלהא דישראל בטורא דעיבל:
deybl bTwra dyshral alha yy qdm mdbkha yhwshe bna bkn
Then Joshua built an altar to Yahweh, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,
31
כמא דפקיד משה עבדא דיי ית בני ישראל כמא דכתיב בספר אורייתא דמשה מדבח אבנין שלמין דלא אתרם עליהון ברזלא ואסיקו עלוהי עלון קדם יי ונכיסו ניכסת קודשין:
qwdshyn nyksth wnkysw yy qdm elwn elwhy wasyqw brzla elyhwn athrm dla shlmyn abnyn mdbkh dmshh awryytha bspr dkthyb kma yshral bny yth dyy ebda mshh dpqyd kma
as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses: an altar of uncut stones, on which no one had lifted up any iron. They offered burnt offerings on it to Yahweh and sacrificed peace offerings.

וכתב תמן על אבניא ית פתשגן אוריתא דמשה דכתב קדם בני ישראל:
yshral bny qdm dkthb dmshh awrytha pthshgn yth abnya el thmn wkthb
He wrote there on the stones a copy of Moses’ law, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

וכל ישראל וסבוהי וסרכוהי ודינוהי קימין מכא ומכא לארונא קדם כהניא לואי נטלי ארונא דקימא דיי כגיורא כיציבא פלגיהון לקבל טורא דגריזין ופלגיהון לקבל טורא דעיבל כמא דפקיד משה עבדא דיי לברכא ית עמא ישראל בקדמיתא:
bqdmytha yshral ema yth lbrka dyy ebda mshh dpqyd kma deybl Twra lqbl wplgyhwn dgryzyn Twra lqbl plgyhwn kytsyba kgywra dyy dqyma arwna nTly lway khnya qdm larwna wmka mka qymyn wdynwhy wsrkwhy wsbwhy yshral wkl
All Israel, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark before the Levitical priests, who carried the ark of Yahweh’s covenant, the foreigner as well as the native; half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.

ובתר כן קרא ית כל פתגמי אורייתא ברכן ולוטין ככל דכתיב בספרא דאוריתא:
dawrytha bspra dkthyb kkl wlwTyn brkn awryytha pthgmy kl yth qra kn wbthr
Afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

לא הוה פתגמא מכל די פקיד משה דלא קרא יהושע קדם כל קהלא דישראל ונשיא וטפלא וגיוריא דאזלין ביניהון:
bynyhwn dazlyn wgywrya wTpla wnshya dyshral qhla kl qdm yhwshe qra dla mshh pqyd dy mkl pthgma hwh la
There was not a word of all that Moses commanded which Joshua didn’t read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.
