ܘܐܥܠܝܘ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܥܘܠܐ ܒܚܪܡܐ ܘܢܣܒ ܥܟܪ ܒܪ ܟܪܡܝ ܒܪ ܙܒܕܝ ܒܪ ܙܪܚ ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܝܗܘܕܐ ܢܣܒ ܡܢ ܚܪܡܐ ܘܛܫܝ ܘܐܬܚܡܬ ܪܘܓܙܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܥܠ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ
'ysryl bny el dmry' rwgzh w'thkhmth wTshy khrm' mn nsb dyhwd' shbT' mn zrkh br zbdy br krmy br ekr wnsb bkhrm' ewl' 'ysryl bny w'elyw
But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted things; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against the children of Israel.

ܘܫܕܪ ܝܫܘܥ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܡܢ ܐܝܪܝܚܘ ܠܥܝ ܕܥܠ ܓܢܒ ܒܝܬ ܐܘܢ ܡܢ ܡܕܢܚܐ ܕܒܝܬ ܐܝܠ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܣܩܘ ܓܘܫܘ ܐܪܥܐ ܘܣܠܩܘ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܘܓܫܘܗ̇ ܠܥܝ

Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the land.” The men went up and spied out Ai.

ܘܗܦܟܘ ܠܘܬ ܝܫܘܥ ܘܐ̇ܡܪܝܢ ܠܗ ܠܐ ܢܣܩ ܟܠܗ ܥܡܐ ܐܠܐ ܐܝܟ ܬܪ̈ܝܢ ܬܠܬܐ ܐ̈ܠܦܝܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܝܢ ܢܣܩܘܢ ܢܚܪܒܘܢܗ̇ ܠܥܝ ܠܐ ܬܫܕܪ ܠܟܠܗ ܥܡܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܙܥܘܪܝܢ ܐܢܘܢ

They returned to Joshua, and said to him, “Don’t let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai. Don’t make all the people to toil there, for there are only a few of them.”

ܘܣܠܩܘ ܡܢ ܥܡܐ ܠܬܡܢ ܐܝܟ ܬܠܬܐ ܐ̈ܠܦܝܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܝܢ ܘܥܪܩܘ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܐܢܫ̈ܝܗ̇ ܕܥܝ
dey 'nshyh qdm mn lhwn werqw gbryn 'lpyn thlth' 'yk lthmn em' mn wslqw
So about three thousand men of the people went up there, and they fled before the men of Ai.

ܘܚܪܒܘ ܐܢܫ̈ܝܗ̇ ܕܥܝ ܡܢ ܐܝܣܪܐܝܠ ܬܠܬܝܢ ܘܫܬܐ ܓܒܪ̈ܝܢ ܘܪܕܦܘ ܐܢܘܢ ܩܕܡ ܬܪܥܐ ܥܕܡܐ ܕܐܬܬܒܪܘ ܘܡܚܘ ܒܗܘܢ ܡܚܘܬܐ ܘܙܥ ܠܒܗ ܕܥܡܐ ܘܗܘܘ ܐܝܟ ܡ̈ܝܐ

The men of Ai struck about thirty-six men of them. They chased them from before the gate even to Shebarim, and struck them at the descent. The hearts of the people melted, and became like water.

ܘܨܪܝ ܝܫܘܥ ܠܒ̈ܘܫܘܗܝ ܘܢܦܠ ܥܠ ܐ̈ܦܘܗܝ ܥܠ ܐܪܥܐ ܩܕܡ ܩܒܘܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܪܡܫܐ ܗܘ ܘܩܫܝܫ̈ܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܐܪܡܝܘ ܥܦܪܐ ܥܠ ܪ̈ܝܫܝܗܘܢ

Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before Yahweh’s ark until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.

ܘܐܡܪ ܝܫܘܥ ܐܘܢ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܠܡܢܐ ܐܥܒܪܬܝܗܝ ܠܥܡܐ ܗܢܐ ܝܘܪܕܢܢ ܕܬܫܠܡܢ ܒܐܝܕܐ ܕܐܡܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܐܠܘ ܐܝܬܒܢ ܗܘܝܢ ܠܢ ܟܝ ܒܥܒܪܐ ܕܝܘܪܕܢܢ

Joshua said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? I wish that we had been content and lived beyond the Jordan!

ܡܢܐ ܡܟܝܠ ܐܡܪ ܕܐܦܢܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܩܕܠܗ ܩܕܡ ܒ̈ܥܠܕܒܒܘܗܝ

Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after Israel has turned their backs before their enemies?

ܘܢܫܡܥܘܢ ܟܢ̈ܥܢܝܐ ܘܟܠܗܘܢ ܥܡܘܪ̈ܝܗ̇ ܕܐܪܥܐ ܘܢܬܟܢܫܘܢ ܥܠܝܢ ܘܢܘܒܕܘܢ ܫܡܢ ܡܢ ܐ̈ܦܝ ܐܪܥܐ ܘܡܢܐ ܥ̇ܒܕ ܐܢܬ ܕܝܢ ܠܫܡܟ ܪܒܐ

For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. What will you do for your great name?”

ܘܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܠܝܫܘܥ ܩܘܡ ܠܟ ܠܡܢܐ ܐܪܡܐ ܐܢܬ ܥܠ ܐ̈ܦܝܟ ܥܠ ܐܪܥܐ

Yahweh said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face like that?

ܚܛܐ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܥܒܪܘ ܥܠ ܦܘܩܕܢܐ ܕܦܩ̇ܕܬ ܐܢܘܢ ܘܢܣܒܘ ܡܢ ܚܪܡܐ ܘܐܦ ܓܢܒܘ ܐܦ ܟܕܒܘ ܘܛܫܝܘ ܒܡܢܝ̈ܗܘܢ
bmnyhwn wTshyw kdbw 'p gnbw w'p khrm' mn wnsbw 'nwn dpqdth pwqdn' el webrw 'ysryl khT'
Israel has sinned. Yes, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them. Yes, they have even taken some of the devoted things, and have also stolen, and also deceived. They have even put it among their own stuff.

ܘܠܐ ܢܫܟܚܘܢ ܬܘܒ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܠܡܩܡ ܩܕܡ ܒ̈ܥܠܕܒܒܝܗܘܢ ܐܠܐ ܩܕܠܗܘܢ ܢܦܢܘܢ ܩܕܡ ܒ̈ܥܠܕܒܒܝܗܘܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܗܘܘ ܠܚܪܡܐ ܘܬܘܒ ܠܐ ܐܗܘܐ ܥܡܗܘܢ ܐܠܐ ܐܢ ܐܦܪܩܬܘܢ ܚܪܡܐ ܡܢ ܒܝܢܬܟܘܢ

Therefore the children of Israel can’t stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.

ܩܘܡ ܙܡܢܝܗܝ ܠܥܡܐ ܗܢܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܙܕܡܢܘ ܡܚܪ ܡܛܠ ܕܗܟܢܐ ܐ̇ܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܚܪܡܐ ܒܓܘܟ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܬܘܒ ܠܐ ܡܫܟܚ ܐܢܬ ܠܡܩܡ ܩܕܡ ܒ̈ܥܠܕܒܒܝܟ ܥܕܡܐ ܕܬܦܪܩܘܢ ܚܪܡܐ ܡܢ ܒܝܢܬܟܘܢ

Get up! Sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, for Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, “There is a devoted thing among you, Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted thing from among you.”

ܘܒܨܦܪܐ ܩܪܒܘ ܫܒ̈ܛܝܟܘܢ ܘܫܒܛܐ ܕܢܐܚܕܝܘܗܝ ܡܪܝܐ ܢܬܩܪܒ ܠܫܪ̈ܒܬܐ ܘܫܪܒܬܐ ܕܢܐܚܕܝܗ̇ ܡܪܝܐ ܬܬܩܪܒ ܠܒ̈ܬܝܢ ܘܒܝܬܐ ܕܢܐܚܕܝܘܗܝ ܡܪܝܐ ܢܬܩܪܒ ܠܓܒܪ̈ܝܢ

In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. It shall be that the tribe which Yahweh selects shall come near by families. The family which Yahweh selects shall come near by households. The household which Yahweh selects shall come near man by man.

ܘܡ̇ܢ ܕܡܬܬܚܕ ܒܗ ܒܚܪܡܐ ܢܐܩܕ ܒܢܘܪܐ ܗܘ ܘܟܠܡܕܡ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܥܠ ܕܥܒܪ ܥܠ ܦܘܩܕܢܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܘܥܠ ܕܥܒܕ ܥܘܠܐ ܒܐܝܣܪܝܠ
b'ysryl ewl' debd wel dmry' pwqdnh el debr el lh d'yth wklmdm hw bnwr' n'qd bkhrm' bh dmththkhd wmn
It shall be, that he who is taken with the devoted thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed Yahweh’s covenant, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”

ܘܩܕܡ ܝܫܘܥ ܒܨܦܪܐ ܘܩܪܒܗ ܠܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܠܫܒ̈ܛܝܢ ܘܐܬܬܚܕ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܝܗܘܕܐ

So Joshua rose up early in the morning and brought Israel near by their tribes. The tribe of Judah was selected.

ܘܩܪܒ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܝܗܘܕܐ ܠܫܪ̈ܒܬܐ ܘܐܬܬܚܕܬ ܫܪܒܬܐ ܕܙܪܚ ܘܩܪܒ ܫܪܒܬܐ ܕܙܪܚ ܠܒ̈ܬܝܢ ܘܐܬܬܚܕ ܙܒܕܝ
zbdy w'ththkhd lbthyn dzrkh shrbth' wqrb dzrkh shrbth' w'ththkhdth lshrbth' dyhwd' shbT' wqrb
He brought near the family of Judah, and he selected the family of the Zerahites. He brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was selected.

ܘܩܪܒ ܒܝܬܗ ܠܓܒܪ̈ܝܢ ܘܐܬܬܚܕ ܥܟܪ ܒܪ ܟܪܡܝ ܒܪ ܙܒܕܝ ܒܪ ܙܪܚ ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܝܗܘܕܐ

He brought near his household man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected.

ܘܐܡܪ ܝܫܘܥ ܠܥܟܪ ܗܒ ܪܒܘܬܐ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܗܒ ܠܗ ܬܘܕܝܬܐ ܘܚܘܐ ܡܕܡ ܕܥܒܕܬ ܘܠܐ ܬܛܫܐ ܡܢܝ

Joshua said to Achan, “My son, please give glory to Yahweh, the God of Israel, and make confession to him. Tell me now what you have done! Don’t hide it from me!”

ܥܢܐ ܥܟܪ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܝܫܘܥ ܫܪܝܪܐܝܬ ܐܢܐ ܚܛܝ̇ܬ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܗܟܢܐ ܥܒ̇ܕܬ

Achan answered Joshua, and said, “I have truly sinned against Yahweh, the God of Israel, and this is what I have done.

ܚܙܝ̇ܬ ܒܒܙܬܐ ܐܡܠܐ ܚܕܐ ܒܒܠܝܬܐ ܘܫܦܝܪܐ ܗܘܬ ܘܡܐܬܝܢ ܡܬܩ̈ܠܝܢ ܕܣܐܡܐ ܘܠܫܢܐ ܚܕ ܕܕܗܒܐ ܕܬ̇ܩܠ ܚܡܫܝܢ ܡܬܩ̈ܠܝܢ ܘܪܓ̇ܬ ܐܢܘܢ ܘܢܣ̇ܒܬ ܐܢܘܢ ܘܗܐ ܛܡܝܪܝܢ ܠܝ ܒܐܪܥܐ ܒܡܫܟܢܝ ܘܣܐܡܐ ܡܢ ܠܬܚܬ

When I saw among the plunder a beautiful Babylonian robe, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, then I coveted them and took them. Behold, they are hidden in the ground in the middle of my tent, with the silver under it.”

ܘܫܕܪ ܝܫܘܥ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܘܪܗܛܘ ܠܡܫܟܢܗ ܘܚܙܘ ܕܛܡܝܪܝܢ ܒܡܫܟܢܗ ܘܣܐܡܐ ܡܢ ܠܬܚܬ

So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent. Behold, it was hidden in his tent, with the silver under it.

ܘܢܣܒܘ ܐܢܘܢ ܡܢ ܡܫܟܢܗ ܘܐܝܬܝܘ ܐܢܘܢ ܠܘܬ ܝܫܘܥ ܘܠܘܬ ܟܠܗ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܣܡ ܐܢܘܢ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ
mry' qdm 'nwn wsm 'ysryl klh wlwth yshwe lwth 'nwn w'ythyw mshknh mn 'nwn wnsbw
They took them from the middle of the tent, and brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel. They laid them down before Yahweh.

ܘܕܒܪܗ ܝܫܘܥ ܠܥܟܪ ܒܪ ܙܪܚ ܘܢܣܒ ܠܣܐܡܐ ܘܠܐܡܠܐ ܘܠܠܫܢܐ ܕܕܗܒܐ ܘܕܒܪ ܠܒܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܠܒܢ̈ܬܗ ܘܠܬܘܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܠܚܡܪܗ ܘܠܥܢܗ ܘܠܡܫܟܢܗ ܘܠܟܠ ܡܕܡ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܘܠܟܠܗ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܥܡܗ ܘܐܣܩ ܐܢܘܢ ܠܥܘܡܩܐ ܕܥܟܪ

Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his cattle, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up to the valley of Achor.

ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܝܫܘܥ ܠܡܢܐ ܕܠܚܬܢ ܢܕܠܚܟ ܡܪܝܐ ܒܝܘܡܐ ܗܢܐ ܘܪܓܡܘܗܝ ܒܟܐ̈ܦܐ ܟܘܠܗ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܠܗ ܘܠܟܠ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܘܐܘܩܕܘ ܐܢܘܢ ܒܢܘܪܐ

Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? Yahweh will trouble you today.” All Israel stoned him with stones, and they burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.

ܘܐܩܝܡܘ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܝܓܪܐ ܕܟܐ̈ܦܐ ܪ̈ܘܪܒܬܐ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܝܘܡܢܐ ܘܐܬܬܢܝܚ ܡܪܝܐ ܡܢ ܚܡܬܐ ܕܪܘܓܙܗ ܡܛܠ ܗܢܐ ܐܬܩܪܝ ܫܡܗ ܕܐܬܪܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܥܘܡܩܐ ܕܥܟܪ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܝܘܡܢܐ
lywmn' edm' dekr ewmq' hw d'thr' shmh 'thqry hn' mTl drwgzh khmth' mn mry' w'ththnykh lywmn' edm' rwrbth' dk'p' ygr' elwhy w'qymw
They raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Yahweh turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called “The valley of Achor” to this day.
