1
והוה פתגם נבואה מן קדם יי עם יונה בר אמתי למימר:
lmymr amthy br ywnh em yy qdm mn nbwah pthgm whwh
Now Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

קום אזיל לנינוה קרתא רבתא ואתנבי עלה ארי סליקת בישתהון קדמי:
qdmy byshthhwn slyqth ary elh wathnby rbtha qrtha lnynwh azyl qwm
“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”

וקם יונה למערק לימא מן קדם דאתנבי בשמא דיי ונחת ליפו ואשכח אילפא דאזלא לימא ויהב אגרא ונחת בה למיזל עמהון בימא מן קדם דאתנבי בשמא דיי:
dyy bshma dathnby qdm mn byma emhwn lmyzl bh wnkhth agra wyhb lyma dazla aylpa washkkh lypw wnkhth dyy bshma dathnby qdm mn lyma lmerq ywnh wqm
But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.

ויי ארים רוח רב על ימא והוה נחשול רב בימא ואילפא בעיא לאתברא:
lathbra beya waylpa byma rb nkhshwl whwh yma el rb rwkh arym wyy
But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.

ודחילו ספניא ובעו גבר מן דחלתיה וחזו ארי לית בהון צרוך ורמו ית מניא דבאילפא לימא לאקלא מנהון ויונה נחית לארעית שדא דאילפא ושכיב ודמוך:
wdmwk wshkyb daylpa shda lareyth nkhyth wywnh mnhwn laqla lyma dbaylpa mnya yth wrmw tsrwk bhwn lyth ary wkhzw dkhlthyh mn gbr wbew spnya wdkhylw
Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.

וקרב לותיה רב ספניא ואמר ליה מא את דמוך קום צלי קדם אלהך מאים יתרחים מן קדם יי עלנא ולא נוביד:
nwbyd wla elna yy qdm mn ythrkhym maym alhk qdm tsly qwm dmwk ath ma lyh wamr spnya rb lwthyh wqrb
So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”

ואמרו גבר לחבריה אתו ונרמי עדבין ונידע בדיל מה בישתא הדא לנא ורמו עדבין ונפל עדבא על יונה:
ywnh el edba wnpl edbyn wrmw lna hda byshtha mh bdyl wnyde edbyn wnrmy athw lkhbryh gbr wamrw
They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

ואמרו ליה חוי כען לנא בדיל מה בישתא הדא לנא מה עבידתך ומנן את אתי אי דא היא מדינתך ואי מדין עמא את:
ath ema mdyn way mdynthk hya da ay athy ath wmnn ebydthk mh lna hda byshtha mh bdyl lna ken khwy lyh wamrw
Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”

ואמר להון יהודאה אנא ומן קדם יי אלהא דשמיא אנא דחל דעבד ית ימא וית יבשתא:
ybshtha wyth yma yth debd dkhl ana dshmya alha yy qdm wmn ana yhwdah lhwn wamr
He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”

ודחילו גבריא דחילא רבא ואמרו ליה מה דא עבדתא ארי ידעו גובריא ארי מן קדם יי הוא עריק ארי חוי להון:
lhwn khwy ary eryq hwa yy qdm mn ary gwbrya ydew ary ebdtha da mh lyh wamrw rba dkhyla gbrya wdkhylw
Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.

ואמרו ליה מה נעביד לך וינוח ימא מננא ארי ימא אזיל ונחשוליה תקיף:
thqyp wnkhshwlyh azyl yma ary mnna yma wynwkh lk nebyd mh lyh wamrw
Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.

ואמר להון טלוני ורמוני לימא ויניח ימא מעליכון ארי ידע אנא ארי בדילי נחשולא רבא הדיל עליכון:
elykwn hdyl rba nkhshwla bdyly ary ana yde ary melykwn yma wynykh lyma wrmwny Tlwny lhwn wamr
He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”

ושיטין גבריא לאתבא ליבשתא ולא יכילו ארי ימא אזיל ונחשוליה תקיף עליהון:
elyhwn thqyp wnkhshwlyh azyl yma ary ykylw wla lybshtha lathba gbrya wshyTyn
Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.

וצליאו קדם יי ואמרו קביל בעותנא יי לא כען ניבד בחובת נפש דגברא הדין ולא תתן עלנא חובת דם זכאי ארי את יי כמא דרעוא קדמך עבדתא:
ebdtha qdmk drewa kma yy ath ary zkay dm khwbth elna ththn wla hdyn dgbra npsh bkhwbth nybd ken la yy bewthna qbyl wamrw yy qdm wtslyaw
Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.”

ונסיבו ית יונה ורמוהי לימא ונח ימא מנחשוליה:
mnkhshwlyh yma wnkh lyma wrmwhy ywnh yth wnsybw
So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.
