ܘܗܘܐ ܦܬܓܡܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܥܠ ܝܘܢܢ ܒܪ ܡܬܝ ܠܡܐܡܪ

Now Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

ܩܘܡ ܙܠ ܠܢܝܢܘܐ ܡܕܝܢܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܘܐܟܪܙ ܥܠܝܗ̇ ܡܛܠ ܕܣܠܩܬ ܒܝܫܘܬܗܘܢ ܩܕܡܝ
qdmy byshwthhwn dslqth mTl elyh w'krz rbth' mdynth' lnynw' zl qwm
“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”

ܘܩܡ ܝܘܢܢ ܠܡܥܪܩ ܠܬܪܫܝܫ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ ܘܢܚܬ ܠܝܘܦܐ ܘܐܫܟܚ ܐܠܦܐ ܕܥܐܠܐ ܠܬܪܫܝܫ ܘܝܗܒ ܐܓܪܐ ܘܢܚܬ ܠܗ̇ ܠܡܥܠ ܥܡܗܘܢ ܠܬܪܫܝܫ ܠܡܥܪܩ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ
mry' qdm mn lmerq lthrshysh emhwn lmel lh wnkhth 'gr' wyhb lthrshysh de'l' 'lp' w'shkkh lywp' wnkhth mry' qdm mn lthrshysh lmerq ywnn wqm
But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.

ܘܡܪܝܐ ܐܪܡܝ ܪܘܚܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܒܝܡܐ ܘܗܘܐ ܡܚܫܘܠܐ ܪܒܐ ܒܝܡܐ ܘܐܠܦܐ ܡܬܗܦܟܐ ܗܘܬ ܠܡܬܬܒܪܘ
lmththbrw hwth mthhpk' w'lp' bym' rb' mkhshwl' whw' bym' rbth' rwkh' 'rmy wmry'
But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.

ܘܕܚܠܘ ܡ̈ܠܚܐ ܘܓܥܘ ܐܢܫ ܠܘܬ ܐܠܗܗ ܘܫܕܘ ܡܐ̈ܢܐ ܡܢ ܐܠܦܐ ܒܝܡܐ ܕܢܩܠܘܢ ܡܢܗܘܢ ܝܘܢܢ ܕܝܢ ܢܚܬ ܠܗ ܠܐܫܬܗ̇ ܕܐܠܦܐ ܘܕܡܟ
wdmk d'lp' l'shthh lh nkhth dyn ywnn mnhwn dnqlwn bym' 'lp' mn m'n' wshdw 'lhh lwth 'nsh wgew mlkh' wdkhlw
Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.

ܘܩܪܒ ܠܘܬܗ ܪܒ ܡ̈ܠܚܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܡܢܐ ܕܡܟ ܐܢܬ ܩܘܡ ܩܪܝ ܠܐܠܗܟ ܟܒܪ ܢܦܨܝܢ ܐܠܗܐ ܘܠܐ ܢܐܒܕ

So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”

ܘܐܡܪܘ ܓܒܪ ܠܚܒܪܗ ܬܘ ܢܪܡܐ ܦܨ̈ܐ ܘܢܕܥ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܗܕܐ ܡܛܠ ܡ̇ܢ ܐܬܬ ܥܠܝܢ ܘܐܪܡܝܘ ܦܨ̈ܐ ܘܣܠܩܬ ܦܨܬܗ ܕܝܘܢܢ
dywnn ptsthh wslqth pts' w'rmyw elyn 'thth mn mTl hd' byshth' wnde pts' nrm' thw lkhbrh gbr w'mrw
They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܚܘܢ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܗܕܐ ܡܛܠ ܡܢܐ ܐܬܬ ܥܠܝܢ ܡܢܘ ܥܒܕܟ ܘܡܢ ܐܝܡܟܐ ܐܢܬ ܘܐܝܕܐ ܗܝ ܐܪܥܟ ܘܡܢ ܐܝܢܐ ܐܢܬ ܥܡܐ
em' 'nth 'yn' wmn 'rek hy w'yd' 'nth 'ymk' wmn ebdk mnw elyn 'thth mn' mTl hd' byshth' khwn lh w'mrw
Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”

ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܝܘܢܢ ܥܒܪܝܐ ܐܢܐ ܘܠܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܕܫܡܝܐ ܕܚܠ ܐܢܐ ܕܥܒܕ ܝܡܐ ܘܝܒܫܐ
wybsh' ym' debd 'n' dkhl dshmy' 'lh' wlmry' 'n' ebry' ywnn lhwn 'mr
He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”

ܘܕܚܠܘ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܚܠܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܡܢܐ ܥܒܕܬ ܡܛܠ ܕܝܕܥܘ ܐܢܫܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ ܥܪܩ ܘܟܕ ܚܘܝ ܐܢܘܢ
'nwn khwy wkd erq mry' qdm dmn hnwn 'nsh' dydew mTl ebdth mn' lh w'mrw rbth' dkhlth' hnwn gbr' wdkhlw
Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.

ܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܗ ܡܢܐ ܢܥܒܕ ܠܟ ܘܢܫܠܐ ܝܡܐ ܡܢܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܝܡܐ ܗܐ ܐܙܠ ܘܡܬܕܠܚ ܥܠܝܢ
elyn wmthdlkh 'zl h' dym' mTl mnn ym' wnshl' lk nebd mn' lh 'mryn
Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.

ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܝܘܢܢ ܫܘܩܠܘܢܝ ܘܐܪܡܐܘܢܝ ܒܝܡܐ ܘܢܫܠܐ ܝܡܐ ܡܢܟܘܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܝܕܥ ܐܢܐ ܕܗܢܐ ܡܚܫܘܠܐ ܪܒܐ ܡܛܠܬܝ ܗܘ ܗܘܐ ܥܠܝܟܘܢ
elykwn hw' hw mTlthy rb' mkhshwl' dhn' 'n' dyde mTl mnkwn ym' wnshl' bym' w'rm'wny shwqlwny ywnn lhwn 'mr
He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”

ܘܐܬܟܬܫܘ ܐܢܫܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܢܗܦܟܘܢ ܠܝܒܫܐ ܘܠܐ ܐܫܟܚܘ ܡܛܠ ܕܝܡܐ ܐܙܠ ܗܘܐ ܘܡܬܕܠܚ ܥܠܝܗܘܢ
elyhwn wmthdlkh hw' 'zl dym' mTl 'shkkhw wl' lybsh' dnhpkwn hnwn 'nsh' w'thkthshw
Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.

ܘܩܪܘ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܐܘܢ ܡܪܝܐ ܠܐ ܢܐܒܕ ܒܢܦܫܗ ܕܓܒܪܐ ܗܢܐ ܘܠܐ ܬܚܫܘܒ ܥܠܝܢ ܕܡܐ ܙܟܝܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܢܬ ܗܘ ܡܪܝܐ ܘܐܝܟ ܕܨܒܐ ܐܢܬ ܥܒܕ ܐܢܬ
'nth ebd 'nth dtsb' w'yk mry' hw d'nth mTl zky' dm' elyn thkhshwb wl' hn' dgbr' bnpshh n'bd l' mry' 'wn w'mrw lmry' wqrw
Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.”

ܘܫܩܠܘܗܝ ܠܝܘܢܢ ܘܫܕܐܘܗܝ ܒܝܡܐ ܘܐܬܬܢܝܚ ܝܡܐ ܡܢ ܡܚܫ̈ܘܠܘܗܝ

So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.

ܘܕܚܠܘ ܐܢܫܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܚܠܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ ܘܕܒܚܘ ܕܒܚ̈ܐ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܘܢܕܪܘ ܢܕܪ̈ܐ

Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vows.
