ברם בקושטא ידעית ארום היכנא ומה ידכי בר נש עם אלהא:
alha em nsh br ydky wmh hykna arwm ydeyth bqwshTa brm
“Truly I know that it is so, but how can man be just with God?

אם יצבי למנצי עמיה לא יתיביניה חדא מן אלף:
alp mn khda ythybynyh la emyh lmntsy ytsby am
If he is pleased to contend with him, he can’t answer him one time in a thousand.

חכימא לבא ואלים חילא מן אקשי לותיה ואשלם:
washlm lwthyh aqshy mn khyla walym lba khkyma
God is wise in heart, and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?

דמסלק תקיפין היך טוריא ולא ידעו ארום הפיכנון ברוגזיה:
brwgzyh hpyknwn arwm ydew wla Twrya hyk thqypyn dmslq
He removes the mountains, and they don’t know it, when he overturns them in his anger.

דמרגיז ארעא מאתרה ועמודהא מתרפפין:
mthrppyn wemwdha mathrh area dmrgyz
He shakes the earth out of its place. Its pillars tremble.

דאמר לשמשא ולא ידנח ואמטול כוכביא יחתום בענני:
benny ykhthwm kwkbya wamTwl ydnkh wla lshmsha damr
He commands the sun and it doesn’t rise, and seals up the stars.

דמתח שמיא לבלחודיה ומטיל על רום תקוף ימא:
yma thqwp rwm el wmTyl lblkhwdyh shmya dmthkh
He alone stretches out the heavens, and treads on the waves of the sea.

דעבד עש נפלא וכימא ואדרוני שטרי מזליא בסטר דרומא:
drwma bsTr mzlya shTry wadrwny wkyma npla esh debd
He makes the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, and the rooms of the south.

דעבד רברבן עד דלית סוף ופרישן עד דלית מנין:
mnyn dlyth ed wpryshn swp dlyth ed rbrbn debd
He does great things past finding out; yes, marvelous things without number.

הא יעבר עלי בשמי מרומא ולא אחמי ויחלוף ולא אתבין ליה:
lyh athbyn wla wykhlwp akhmy wla mrwma bshmy ely yebr ha
Behold, he goes by me, and I don’t see him. He passes on also, but I don’t perceive him.

הא יחטוף אנש בעלמא ומן יתיבניה מן יימר ליה מה את עביד:
ebyd ath mh lyh yymr mn ythybnyh wmn belma ansh ykhTwp ha
Behold, he snatches away. Who can hinder him? Who will ask him, ‘What are you doing?’

אלהא לא יתיב רוגזיה תחותוי שיחן רשיעיא יתברון גיותניא דמסיעין בסוגעא:
bswgea dmsyeyn gywthnya ythbrwn rshyeya shykhn thkhwthwy rwgzyh ythyb la alha
“God will not withdraw his anger. The helpers of Rahab stoop under him.

אף כל דכן ארום אנא אתיבניה אבחר פתגמי עמיה:
emyh pthgmy abkhr athybnyh ana arwm dkn kl ap
How much less will I answer him, and choose my words to argue with him?
15
דאין זכית לא אתיב למן דדין יתי אצלי:
atsly ythy ddyn lmn athyb la zkyth dayn
Though I were righteous, yet I wouldn’t answer him. I would make supplication to my judge.

אין קרית ואתיב יתי לא אימין ארום יצית לקלי:
lqly ytsyth arwm aymyn la ythy wathyb qryth ayn
If I had called, and he had answered me, yet I wouldn’t believe that he listened to my voice.
17
דעד חוטי בינתא מדקדק עמי ואסגי הלבשושי מגן:
mgn hlbshwshy wasgy emy mdqdq byntha khwTy ded
For he breaks me with a storm, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

לא ישבקנני לאתבא רוחי ארום ישבענני מריריא:
mryrya yshbenny arwm rwkhy lathba yshbqnny la
He will not allow me to catch my breath, but fills me with bitterness.
19
אם לחילא אלים הא הוא ואין לדינא מן יסהיד עלי:
ely yshyd mn ldyna wayn hwa ha alym lkhyla am
If it is a matter of strength, behold, he is mighty! If of justice, ‘Who,’ says he, ‘will summon me?’
20
אין זכי אנא פומי יחיבינני שלים אנא ומקלקל יתי:
ythy wmqlql ana shlym ykhybynny pwmy ana zky ayn
Though I am righteous, my own mouth will condemn me. Though I am blameless, it will prove me perverse.
21
שלים אנא לא אנדע נפשי ארחיק חיי:
khyy arkhyq npshy ande la ana shlym
I am blameless. I don’t respect myself. I despise my life.

חדא מכילא היא בגין כן אמרית שלים וחיב הוא משיצי:
mshytsy hwa wkhyb shlym amryth kn bgyn hya mkyla khda
“It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.

אין ברוגז ימות בתקיף כד מתמסמסין זכאין ידחך:
ydkhk zkayn mthmsmsyn kd bthqyp ymwth brwgz ayn
If the scourge kills suddenly, he will mock at the trial of the innocent.
24
ארעא אתמסרת ביד חיבא מן קדם יי דינהא יחפי זכותא אין לא דיכי מן הוא:
hwa mn dyky la ayn zkwtha ykhpy dynha yy qdm mn khyba byd athmsrth area
The earth is given into the hand of the wicked. He covers the faces of its judges. If not he, then who is it?

יומי קלילו יתיר מן טול עופא דרהט ערקו לא חמון טבתא:
Tbtha khmwn la erqw drhT ewpa Twl mn ythyr qlylw ywmy
“Now my days are swifter than a runner. They flee away. They see no good.

חלפין עם אלפיא דטעינין מגדיא היך נשרא דטיס על מיכלא:
mykla el dTys nshra hyk mgdya dTeynyn alpya em khlpyn
They have passed away as the swift ships, as the eagle that swoops on the prey.

אין אימר אתנשי מלי אשבק רוגזי ואתגבד:
wathgbd rwgzy ashbq mly athnshy aymr ayn
If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad face, and cheer up,’

כנשית כולהון צערי ידעת ארום לא תזכי יתי:
ythy thzky la arwm ydeth tsery kwlhwn knshyth
I am afraid of all my sorrows. I know that you will not hold me innocent.
29
אנא אתחיב למא דין ללמא אלעי:
aley llma dyn lma athkhyb ana
I will be condemned. Why then do I labor in vain?
30
אין אסחיית במי תלגא ודכאית באהלא ידי:
ydy bahla wdkayth thlga bmy askhyyth ayn
If I wash myself with snow, and cleanse my hands with lye,
31
היכדין בשחותא תטמשנני ומרחקין יתי כסותי:
kswthy ythy wmrkhqyn thTmshnny bshkhwtha hykdyn
yet you will plunge me in the ditch. My own clothes will abhor me.
32
ארום לא בר נש דכמי אתיבניה נעול כחדא בדינא:
bdyna kkhda newl athybnyh dkmy nsh br la arwm
For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment.

לא אית ביננא מכסין ישוי ידיה על תרויננא:
thrwynna el ydyh yshwy mksyn bynna ayth la
There is no umpire between us, that might lay his hand on us both.

יעדי מעלי מחתיה ודחלתיה לא תבעית יתי:
ythy thbeyth la wdkhlthyh mkhthyh mely yedy
Let him take his rod away from me. Let his terror not make me afraid;
