“Hear my words, you wise men. Give ear to me, you who have knowledge.

ܡܛܠ ܕܐܕܢܐ ܒ̇ܚܪܐ ܡ̈ܠܐ ܘܚܟܐ ܛ̇ܥܡ ܡܐܟܘܠܬܐ

For the ear tries words, as the palate tastes food.

ܢܓܒܐ ܠܢ ܕܝ̇ܢܐ ܘܢܕܥ ܒܝܢܬܢ ܡܢܐ ܫܦܝܪ
ngb' ln dyn' wnde bynthn mn' shpyr
Let us choose for us that which is right. Let us know among ourselves what is good.

ܐܡܪܬ ܐܝܘܒ ܘܙܟܝܬ ܕܐܡܪܬ ܐܙܕܕܩܬ ܘܐܠܗܐ ܗܘ ܨܠܝܗܝ ܠܕܝܢܝ ܥܠܝ
'mrth 'ywb wzkyth d'mrth 'zddqth w'lh' hw tslyhy ldyny ely
For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, God has taken away my right.

ܡܢܘ ܐܢܫܐ ܕܐܒܕ ܕܠܐ ܣܟܠܘ
mnw 'nsh' d'bd dl' sklw
Notwithstanding my right I am considered a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without disobedience.’

ܡܢܘ ܓܒܪܐ ܐܝܟ ܐܝܘܒ ܕܢܫܬܐ ܡܘܝܩܐ ܐܝܟ ܡ̈ܝܐ

What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water,

ܘܗܘܐ ܫܘܬܦܐ ܘܚܒܪܐ ܠܥܒ̈ܕܝ ܥܘܠܐ ܥܡ ܐܢܫܐ ܚ̈ܛܝܐ ܠܡܗܠܟܘ

who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men?

ܕܐܡܪܬ ܕܠܐ ܙ̇ܟܐ ܓܒܪܐ ܡܐ ܕܕܚ̇ܠ ܡܢ ܐܠܗܐ

For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.’

ܡܛܠ ܗܢܐ ܐܢܫ̈ܝ ܠܒܐ ܫܘܡܥܘܢܝ ܚܣ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܕܢܥܒܕ ܥܘܠܐ ܘܚܣ ܠܗ ܕܢܥܒܕ ܚܛܝܬܐ

“Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness, from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

ܕܐܝܟ ܥܒ̇ܕܘ̈ܗܝ ܕܒܪܢܫܐ ܦ̇ܪܥ ܠܗ ܘܓܒܪܐ ܐܝܟ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܗ ܡܫܟܚ
d'yk ebdwhy dbrnsh' pre lh wgbr' 'yk 'wrkhthh mshkkh
For the work of a man he will give to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.

ܫܪܝܪܐܝܬ ܐܠܗܐ ܠܐ ܥ̇ܒܕ ܥܘܠܐ ܐܦ ܠܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܡܥܪܩܠ ܐܘܪܚܐ

Yes surely, God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert justice.

ܡܢܘ ܦܩܕ ܠܐܪܥܐ ܘܡܢܘ ܥܒܕ ܠܟܠܗ̇ ܬܒܝܠ

Who put him in charge of the earth? Or who has appointed him over the whole world?

ܐܢ ܡܦܢܐ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܠܒܗ ܪܘܚܗ ܘܢܫܡܬܗ ܠܘܬܗ ܡܬܟܢܫܢ

If he set his heart on himself, if he gathered to himself his spirit and his breath,

ܣ̇ܐܦ ܟܠ ܒܣܪ ܐܟܚܕܐ ܘܒܪܢܫܐ ܠܥܦܪܗ ܗ̇ܦܟ

all flesh would perish together, and man would turn again to dust.

ܘܐܢ ܡܬܒܝܢ ܐܢܬ ܫܡܥ ܗܠܝܢ ܘܨܘܬ ܠܩܠܐ ܕܡ̈ܠܝ

“If now you have understanding, hear this. Listen to the voice of my words.

ܡ̇ܢ ܕܣ̇ܢܐ ܕܝܢܐ ܠܐ ܙ̇ܟܐ ܘܐܢ ܙܟܝ ܗܘ ܠܐ ܟܐܢܐܝܬ ܡܬܚܝܒ
mn dsn' dyn' l' zk' w'n zky hw l' k'n'yth mthkhyb
Should even one who hates justice govern? Will you condemn him who is righteous and mighty,

ܕܐܡܪ ܥܠ ܡ̇ܠܟܐ ܥܘܠܐ ܡܠ̣ܟ ܪ̈ܝܫܢܐ ܡܠ̣ܟ ܫ̈ܠܝܛܢܐ

who says to a king, ‘Vile!’ or to nobles, ‘Wicked!’?

ܕܠܐ ܢ̇ܣܒ ܒܐ̈ܦܝ ܪ̈ܘܪܒܢܐ ܘܠܐ ܢܣ̇ܒ ܒܐ̈ܦܝ ܡܣ̈ܟܢܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܟܠܗܘܢ ܥ̇ܒܕ ܐ̈ܝܕܘܗܝ ܐܢܘܢ

He doesn’t respect the persons of princes, nor respect the rich more than the poor, for they all are the work of his hands.

ܡܢ ܬܚܝܬ ܫܠܝܐ ܡܝܬܝܢ ܘܒܦܠܓܗ ܕܠܠܝܐ ܣܝܦܝܢ ܘܐܒܕܝܢ ܘܡܫܬܘܕܥܝܢ ܠܚܣܝܢܐ ܠܐ ܒܚܝܠܐ
mn thkhyth shly' mythyn wbplgh dlly' sypyn w'bdyn wmshthwdeyn lkhsyn' l' bkhyl'
In a moment they die, even at midnight. The people are shaken and pass away. The mighty are taken away without a hand.

ܡܛܘܠ ܕܥܝܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܥܠ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܗ ܕܓܒܪܐ ܘܟܠܗܝܢ ܗ̈ܠܟܬܗ ܚ̇ܙܐ
mTwl deynwhy el klhyn 'wrkhthh dgbr' wklhyn hlkthh khz'
“For his eyes are on the ways of a man. He sees all his goings.

ܕܠܐ ܚܫܘܟܐ ܘܕܠܐ ܛ̈ܠܠܝ ܡܘܬܐ ܠܡܬܛܫܝܘ ܬܡܢ ܥܒ̈ܕܝ ܥܘܠܐ

There is no darkness, nor thick gloom, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

ܡܛܠ ܕܬܘܒ ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܥܠ ܓܒܪܐ ܣ̇ܐܡ ܠܡܗܠܟܘ ܥܡ ܐܠܗܐ ܒܕܝܢܐ
mTl dthwb l' hw' el gbr' s'm lmhlkw em 'lh' bdyn'
For he doesn’t need to consider a man further, that he should go before God in judgment.

ܕܐܒܐܫ ܠܣ̈ܓܝܐܐ ܕܠܐ ܣܟ ܘܢܩܝܡ ܐܟܚܕܐ ܚܠܦܝܗܘܢ
d'b'sh lsgy'' dl' sk wnqym 'kkhd' khlpyhwn
He breaks mighty men in pieces in ways past finding out, and sets others in their place.

ܡܛܠ ܗܢܐ ܐܫܬܘܕܥ ܐܢܘܢ ܡܢ ܥܒ̇ܕܝ̈ܗܘܢ ܘܢܗܦܟ ܐܢܘܢ ܠܠܠܝܐ
mTl hn' 'shthwde 'nwn mn ebdyhwn wnhpk 'nwn llly'
Therefore he takes knowledge of their works. He overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

ܘܢܬܡܟܟܘܢ ܬܚܝܬ ܥܘ̣ܠܐ ܥܒ̇ܕܝ̈ܗܘܢ ܒܐܬܪܐ ܕܚܝ̣ܠܐ
wnthmkkwn thkhyth ewl' ebdyhwn b'thr' dkhyl'
He strikes them as wicked men in the open sight of others;

ܥܠ ܕܣܛܘ ܡܢ ܒܬܪܗ ܘܟܠܗܝܢ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܗ ܠܐ ܐܣܬܟܠܘ
el dsTw mn bthrh wklhyn 'wrkhthh l' 'sthklw
because they turned away from following him, and wouldn’t pay attention to any of his ways,

ܥܐܠܐ ܩܕܡܘܗܝ ܨܠܘܬܗ ܕܡܣܟܢܐ ܘܓܥܬܗ ܕܥܢܘܝܐ ܫ̇ܡܥ
e'l' qdmwhy tslwthh dmskn' wgethh denwy' shme
so that they caused the cry of the poor to come to him. He heard the cry of the afflicted.

ܘܐܢ ܗܘ ܫ̇ܒܩ ܡܢܘ ܡܚܝܒ ܘܐܢ ܗܘ ܡܗܦܟ ܐ̈ܦܘܗܝ ܡܢܘ ܫ̇ܒܩ ܠܥܡܐ ܐܘ ܠܒܪ ܐܢܫܐ ܐܟܚܕܐ
w'n hw shbq mnw mkhyb w'n hw mhpk 'pwhy mnw shbq lem' 'w lbr 'nsh' 'kkhd'
When he gives quietness, who then can condemn? When he hides his face, who then can see him? He is over a nation or a man alike,

ܕܠܐ ܐܡܠܟ ܐܢܫܐ ܚܠܦܐ ܘܚܛܝܐ ܠܥܡܐ

that the godless man may not reign, that there be no one to ensnare the people.

ܡܛܠ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܐܡܪ ܕܫܒܩܬ ܠܐ ܡܚܒܠ ܐܢܐ ܕܠܐ ܚ̈ܛܗܝܢ

“For has any said to God, ‘I am guilty, but I will not offend any more.

ܐܠܦܝܢܝ ܐܢܬ ܐܢ ܥܒܕܬ ܥܘ̣ܠܐ
'lpyny 'nth 'n ebdth ewl'
Teach me that which I don’t see. If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more’?

ܬܘܒ ܠܐ ܐܘܣܦ ܠܡܬܠ ܠܟ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܥܠ ܕܚܛܝܬ ܐܢܬ ܓܝܪ ܐܬܒܩܝܬ ܘܠܐ ܐܢܐ ܘܡܕܡ ܕܝ̇ܕܥ ܐܢܬ ܡܠܠ
thwb l' 'wsp lmthl lk pthgm' el dkhTyth 'nth gyr 'thbqyth wl' 'n' wmdm dyde 'nth mll
Shall his recompense be as you desire, that you refuse it? For you must choose, and not I. Therefore speak what you know.

ܐܢܫܐ ܕܠܒܐ ܢܐܡܪܘܢ ܠܝ ܘܓܒܪܐ ܚܟܝܡܐ ܢܫܡܥܢܝ
'nsh' dlb' n'mrwn ly wgbr' khkym' nshmeny
Men of understanding will tell me, yes, every wise man who hears me:

ܐܝܘܒ ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܒܐܝܕܥܬܐ ܡܡܠܠ ܘܡ̈ܠܘܗܝ ܠܐ ܗ̈ܘܝ ܒܣܘܟܠܐ
'ywb l' hw' b'ydeth' mmll wmlwhy l' hwy bswkl'
‘Job speaks without knowledge. His words are without wisdom.’

ܫܪܝܪܐܝܬ ܐܬܒܚܪ ܐܝܘܒ ܥܕ ܣܘܦܐ ܘܠܐ ܡܬܚܫܒ ܒܐܢܫܐ ܥܘ̇ܠܐ̈
shryr'yth 'thbkhr 'ywb ed swp' wl' mthkhshb b'nsh' ewl'
I wish that Job were tried to the end, because of his answering like wicked men.

ܘܐܢ ܡܘܣܦ ܥܠ ܚ̈ܛܗܘܗܝ ܣܟܠܘܬܐ ܒܝܢܬܢ ܡܬܦܩܕܐ ܘܢܩܪܒ ܩܕܡ ܐܠܗܐ ܡ̈ܠܘܗܝ

For he adds rebellion to his sin. He claps his hands among us, and multiplies his words against God.”
