קים גזרית לעיני ומה אסתכל על בתולתא:
bthwltha el asthkl wmh leyny gzryth qym
“I made a covenant with my eyes; how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?

ומה חולק טב יהיב אלהא מלעלא ואחסנת שדי משמי מרומא:
mrwma mshmy shdy wakhsnth mlela alha yhyb Tb khwlq wmh
For what is the portion from God above, and the heritage from the Almighty on high?

הלא צערא לזידונא ותבירא לעבדי שקר:
shqr lebdy wthbyra lzydwna tsera hla
Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

הלא הוא יחמי אורחתי וכל פסיעתי ימנה:
ymnh psyethy wkl awrkhthy ykhmy hwa hla
Doesn’t he see my ways, and count all my steps?

אין הלכית עם שקרא וזריזת על נכילות רגלי:
rgly nkylwth el wzryzth shqra em hlkyth ayn
“If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot has hurried to deceit

יתקלנני במשחתא דצדקא וידע אלהא שלימותי:
shlymwthy alha wyde dtsdqa bmshkhtha ythqlnny
(let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity);

אין תצלי אסתורי מן אורחא ובתר עיני הלך לבי ובידי אדביק מדעם חבולא:
khbwla mdem adbyq wbydy lby hlk eyny wbthr awrkha mn asthwry thtsly ayn
if my step has turned out of the way, if my heart walked after my eyes, if any defilement has stuck to my hands,

אזרע וחורן ייכול ולבלבי נצרי יתלשון:
ythlshwn ntsry wlblby yykwl wkhwrn azre
then let me sow, and let another eat. Yes, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

אין אשתרגג לבבי על אתת גבר ועל תרע חברי כמנית:
kmnyth khbry thre wel gbr athth el lbby ashthrgg ayn
“If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,

תשמש עם חורן אנתתי ועלה יחמטון חורנין:
khwrnyn ykhmTwn welh anththy khwrn em thshmsh
then let my wife grind for another, and let others sleep with her.
11
ארום היא זנו והוא סורחן פריש:
prysh swrkhn whwa znw hya arwm
For that would be a heinous crime. Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges,

ארום אשא היא עד בי אבדנא תגמר ובכל אנבי תלשא:
thlsha anby wbkl thgmr abdna by ed hya asha arwm
for it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all my increase.

אין רחקית דין עבדי ואמהתי כד אית להון תגרא בהדי:
bhdy thgra lhwn ayth kd wamhthy ebdy dyn rkhqyth ayn
“If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me,

ומה אעבד כד יקום אלהא וארום יסער מה אתיבנה:
athybnh mh yser warwm alha yqwm kd aebd wmh
what then will I do when God rises up? When he visits, what will I answer him?
15
הלא בכריסא עבדני מן דעבדיה ואתקן יתנא במעיא חד:
khd bmeya ythna wathqn debdyh mn ebdny bkrysa hla
Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him? Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?
16
אין אתמנע מלשלמא צבאות מסכינא ועיני ארמלתא אשיצי:
ashytsy armltha weyny mskyna tsbawth mlshlma athmne ayn
“If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

ואכלית טולמי בלחודי ולא אכל יתם מנה:
mnh ythm akl wla blkhwdy Twlmy waklyth
or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it
18
מטול דמטליותי אסגיעני היך כאבא ומכריסא דאמי דברני בניחותא:
bnykhwtha dbrny damy wmkrysa kaba hyk asgyeny dmTlywthy mTwl
(no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, I have guided her from my mother’s womb);
19
אין אחמי ערטילי מדלית כסותא ולית חופאה לחשיכא:
lkhshyka khwpah wlyth kswtha mdlyth erTyly akhmy ayn
if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;
20
אין לא בריכו יתי חרצוי ומגזתא דאמרי ישתחן:
yshthkhn damry wmgztha khrtswy ythy brykw la ayn
if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;
21
אין ארימית על יתם ידי ארום אחמי בתרעא סיועי:
sywey bthrea akhmy arwm ydy ythm el arymyth ayn
if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate;
22
כתפי מן שכמה תפול ואדרעי מן קנה תתבר:
ththbr qnh mn wadrey thpwl shkmh mn kthpy
then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from the bone.
23
ארום דליח לותי תבר אלהא ומן מספייה לא אסובר:
aswbr la mspyyh wmn alha thbr lwthy dlykh arwm
For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.
24
אין שויתי על דהב סכויי ולפטלון אמרית רוחצני:
rwkhtsny amryth wlpTlwn skwyy dhb el shwythy ayn
“If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’
25
אין אחדי ארום סגא עתרי וארום בסוגעא אשכחת ידי:
ydy ashkkhth bswgea warwm ethry sga arwm akhdy ayn
If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

אין אחמי אסתהר ארום יגהר וסהרא זיותן מהלך:
mhlk zywthn wshra yghr arwm asthhr akhmy ayn
if I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,
27
ושרגג בטומרא לבי ונשקת ידי לפומי:
lpwmy ydy wnshqth lby bTwmra wshrgg
and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;
28
לחוד הוא סורחן פריש ארום כדבית לאלהא מלעלא:
mlela lalha kdbyth arwm prysh swrkhn hwa lkhwd
this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I would have denied the God who is above.

אין אחדי בצערא דסנאי ויבבית ארום ארעיה ביש:
bysh areyh arwm wybbyth dsnay btsera akhdy ayn
“If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him
30
ולא שבקית למחטי מוריגי למשיל במומתא נפשיה:
npshyh bmwmtha lmshyl mwrygy lmkhTy shbqyth wla
(I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);
31
אין לא אמרו אנשי משכני מן יגזור מבסריה לא נסבע:
nsbe la mbsryh ygzwr mn mshkny anshy amrw la ayn
if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’
32
בשוקא לא יבית גיורא דשי לאכסניא פתחית:
pthkhyth laksnya dshy gywra ybyth la bshwqa
(the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);
33
אין חפית כאדם קדמו מרדי למטמע בעטפי סורחני:
swrkhny beTpy lmTme mrdy qdmw kadm khpyth ayn
if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

ארום אתגבר רכפת גיותניא ובסיר גניסתא יתברנני ושתקית לא אפוק מעלנא:
melna apwq la wshthqyth ythbrnny gnystha wbsyr gywthnya rkpth athgbr arwm
because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

מן יגזור עלי דיקבל מני הא רגוני דשדי עני יתי ופטקא דכתב אנש תגרי:
thgry ansh dkthb wpTqa ythy eny dshdy rgwny ha mny dyqbl ely ygzwr mn
oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

אין לא על כתפי אסוברניה ארכבניה כלילן לי:
ly klyln arkbnyh aswbrnyh kthpy el la ayn
Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.
37
מנין פסיעתי אחוניה דכמת ארכונא דכמת ארכונא אקרבניה:
aqrbnyh arkwna dkmth arkwna dkmth akhwnyh psyethy mnyn
I would declare to him the number of my steps. I would go near to him like a prince.
38
אין עלי ארעא תקבול וכחדא תלמיהא בכין:
bkyn thlmyha wkkhda thqbwl area ely ayn
If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together;
39
אין חילה גמירית בלא כסף ונפש דמרהא אפחית:
apkhyth dmrha wnpsh ksp bla gmyryth khylh ayn
if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,
