האפשר דחכימא יתיב דעתא דדמי לזעפא וימלי היך רוח קדומא כריסיה:
krysyh qdwma rwkh hyk wymly lzepa ddmy detha ythyb dkhkyma hapshr
“Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?

דמכסן במלין ולא יליף ומליא דלית מששא בהון:
bhwn mshsha dlyth wmlya ylyp wla bmlyn dmksn
Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches with which he can do no good?

לחוד את אין תפש דחלתא ותבצור מלתא קדם אלהא:
alha qdm mltha wthbtswr dkhltha thpsh ayn ath lkhwd
Yes, you do away with fear, and hinder devotion before God.

ארום יאלף סורחנך פומך ותהי בחר לישנא דחכימיא:
dkhkymya lyshna bkhr wthhy pwmk swrkhnk yalp arwm
For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty.

יחיבנך פומך ולא אנא וספותך יסהדון בך:
bk yshdwn wspwthk ana wla pwmk ykhybnk
Your own mouth condemns you, and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you.

הא כקדמאי אדם בלא אבא ואמא אתילדת וקדם גלמתא אתבריתא:
athbrytha glmtha wqdm athyldth wama aba bla adm kqdmay ha
“Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought out before the hills?

אפשר דברז אלהא תשמע ואטפת לותך חוכמתא:
khwkmtha lwthk waTpth thshme alha dbrz apshr
Have you heard the secret counsel of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?

מה ידעת ולא נדע תתבין ולא גבנא הוא:
hwa gbna wla ththbyn nde wla ydeth mh
What do you know that we don’t know? What do you understand which is not in us?

לחוד סיב וקשיש בנא ודרב מאבוך יומיא: ת״א לחוד אליפז דסיב ובלדר דקשיש בהדנא וצופר דרב מאבוך יומין:
ywmyn mabwk drb wtswpr bhdna dqshysh wbldr dsyb alypz lkhwd tha ywmya mabwk wdrb bna wqshysh syb lkhwd
With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than your father.

הזעיר מנך נחמתא דאלהא ומללא בניח חזי למללא גבך:
gbk lmlla khzy bnykh wmlla dalha nkhmtha mnk hzeyr
Are the consolations of God too small for you, even the word that is gentle toward you?

מה ילפנך רעיונך ומה מרמזין עינך:
eynk mrmzyn wmh reywnk ylpnk mh
Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash,

ארום תתיב לאלהא רוחך ותהנפק מפומך מליא:
mlya mpwmk wthhnpq rwkhk lalha ththyb arwm
that you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?

מה בר נש ארום יזכי וארום יזדכי ילוד אתתא:
aththa ylwd yzdky warwm yzky arwm nsh br mh
What is man, that he should be clean? What is he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

הא בקדישי עלאי לא יהמין ואנגלי מרומא לא זכאין קדמוי:
qdmwy zkayn la mrwma wangly yhmyn la elay bqdyshy ha
Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones. Yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight;

כל דכן מרחק ומסאב בר נש שתי היך מוי עילתא:
eyltha mwy hyk shthy nsh br wmsab mrkhq dkn kl
how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water!
17
אחוי לך קבל מני ודין דחמתי ואשתעי:
washthey dkhmthy wdyn mny qbl lk akhwy
“I will show you, listen to me; that which I have seen I will declare

די חכימיא יחוון ולא מכדבין מן מסורתא דאבתהון: ת״א דשבטוי דיעקב חכימיא יתובון ולא יכסו ממה דאלפונון אבהתהון:
abhthhwn dalpwnwn mmh yksw wla ythwbwn khkymya dyeqb dshbTwy tha dabthhwn mswrtha mn mkdbyn wla ykhwwn khkymya dy
(which wise men have told by their fathers, and have not hidden it;

להון בלחודיהון אתיהיבת ארעא ולא עבר חילוני במציעיהון:
bmtsyeyhwn khylwny ebr wla area athyhybth blkhwdyhwn lhwn
to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them):

כל יומי רשיעא הוא מתפס ומנין שניא אתטישו לתקיפא: ת״א כל ימי דעשו רשיעא מורנין ליה דיעבד תתובא ולא תב מנין שניא אטמרו לישמעאל תקיפא:
thqypa lyshmeal aTmrw shnya mnyn thb wla ththwba dyebd lyh mwrnyn rshyea deshw ymy kl tha lthqypa athTyshw shnya wmnyn mthps hwa rshyea ywmy kl
the wicked man writhes in pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.

קל דלוחיא בגהנם באודניה כד שרין צדיקי בשלמא בחיי עלמא בזזותיה ייתינה:
yythynh bzzwthyh elma bkhyy bshlma tsdyqy shryn kd bawdnyh bghnm dlwkhya ql
A sound of terrors is in his ears. In prosperity the destroyer will come on him.

לא יהימין בחיוי למתב מן חשוכא ואטימוס הוא לקטלין בחרבא:
bkhrba lqTlyn hwa waTymws khshwka mn lmthb bkhywy yhymyn la
He doesn’t believe that he will return out of darkness. He is waited for by the sword.
23
מנדד הוא למזונא האן הוא ידע ארום מעתד בידיה יום חשוכא:
khshwka ywm bydyh methd arwm yde hwa han lmzwna hwa mndd
He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24
יבעתוניה עקא ומעיקא יחזרוניה היך מליך דאיטימוס לגלוגדקא:
lglwgdqa dayTymws mlyk hyk ykhzrwnyh wmeyqa eqa ybethwnyh
Distress and anguish make him afraid. They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

מטול דאושיט לאלהא ידיה ולות שדי יתגבר:
ythgbr shdy wlwth ydyh lalha dawshyT mTwl
Because he has stretched out his hand against God, and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty,

ירהוט לותיה בתוקפא בקושי רום תרסוי:
thrswy rwm bqwshy bthwqpa lwthyh yrhwT
he runs at him with a stiff neck, with the thick shields of his bucklers,
27
ארום חפא אפוי בשומניה ועבד רוטבא עלוי כפלא:
kpla elwy rwTba webd bshwmnyh apwy khpa arwm
because he has covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat on his thighs.
28
ועבד שכונן בקרוין צדין יתיב בבתיא דלא יתבון להון די אתעתדו ליגורין:
lygwryn athethdw dy lhwn ythbwn dla bbthya ythyb tsdyn bqrwyn shkwnn webd
He has lived in desolate cities, in houses which no one inhabited, which were ready to become heaps.

לא יתעתד ולא יתקים עתריה דקרח ולא יתמחת לארעא מנהון ומהלין טבתא דדתן ואבירם:
wabyrm ddthn Tbtha wmhlyn mnhwn larea ythmkhth wla dqrkh ethryh ythqym wla ythethd la
He will not be rich, neither will his substance continue, neither will their possessions be extended on the earth.

לא יעדי מן חשוכא שבשיה תיבש שלהוביתא ויעדי בזעפא דפומיה דאלהא:
dalha dpwmyh bzepa wyedy shlhwbytha thybsh shbshyh khshwka mn yedy la
He will not depart out of darkness. The flame will dry up his branches. He will go away by the breath of God’s mouth.

לא יהימין בבר נש דבשקרא תעי ארום שקרא תהי פרוגיה:
prwgyh thhy shqra arwm they dbshqra nsh bbr yhymyn la
Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his reward.
32
בלא יומיה תתמלי קבורתא ועוביה לא תהי עבופיא: ת״א עד לא יומי תתמלי סבתיה וכלתיה לא תהי גננא:
gnna thhy la wklthyh sbthyh ththmly ywmy la ed tha ebwpya thhy la wewbyh qbwrtha ththmly ywmyh bla
It will be accomplished before his time. His branch will not be green.
33
יתר היך גופנא בוסריה ויטלוק היך זיתא לבלביה:
lblbyh zytha hyk wyTlwq bwsryh gwpna hyk ythr
He will shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and will cast off his flower as the olive tree.

ארום סיעת דילטור לצערא ואשתא גמרת משכני שוחדא:
shwkhda mshkny gmrth washtha ltsera dylTwr syeth arwm
For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.
