ונפל יוסף על אפי אבוהי ובכא עלוהי ונשק ליה:
lyh wnshq elwhy wbka abwhy apy el ywsp wnpl
Joseph fell on his father’s face, wept on him, and kissed him.
2
ופקיד יוסף ית עבדוהי ית אסותא למחנט ית אבוהי וחנטו אסותא ית ישראל:
yshral yth aswtha wkhnTw abwhy yth lmkhnT aswtha yth ebdwhy yth ywsp wpqyd
Joseph commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Israel.

ושלימו ליה ארבעין יומין ארי כן שלימו יומי חנטיא ובכו יתיה מצראי שבעין יומין:
ywmyn shbeyn mtsray ythyh wbkw khnTya ywmy shlymw kn ary ywmyn arbeyn lyh wshlymw
Forty days were used for him, for that is how many days it takes to embalm. The Egyptians wept for Israel for seventy days.

ועברו יומי בכיתיה ומליל יוסף עם בית פרעה למימר אם כען אשכחית רחמין בעיניכון מלילו כען קדם פרעה למימר:
lmymr preh qdm ken mlylw beynykwn rkhmyn ashkkhyth ken am lmymr preh byth em ywsp wmlyl bkythyh ywmy webrw
When the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh’s staff, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

אבא קיים עלי למימר הא אנא מאית בקברי דאתקנית לי בארעא דכנען תמן תקברנני וכען אסק כען ואקבר ית אבא ואיתוב:
waythwb aba yth waqbr ken asq wken thqbrnny thmn dknen barea ly dathqnyth bqbry mayth ana ha lmymr ely qyym aba
‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying. Bury me in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come again.’”

ואמר פרעה סק וקבור ית אבוך כמא דקיים עלך:
elk dqyym kma abwk yth wqbwr sq preh wamr
Pharaoh said, “Go up, and bury your father, just like he made you swear.”

וסליק יוסף למקבר ית אבוהי וסליקו עמיה כל עבדי פרעה סבי ביתיה וכל סבי ארעא דמצרים:
dmtsrym area sby wkl bythyh sby preh ebdy kl emyh wslyqw abwhy yth lmqbr ywsp wslyq
Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, all the elders of the land of Egypt,

וכל בית יוסף ואחוהי ובית אבוהי לחוד טפלהון וענהון ותוריהון שבקו בארעא דגשן:
dgshn barea shbqw wthwryhwn wenhwn Tplhwn lkhwd abwhy wbyth wakhwhy ywsp byth wkl
all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

וסליקו עמיה אף רתכין אף פרשין והוה משריתא סגיאה לחדא:
lkhda sgyah mshrytha whwh prshyn ap rthkyn ap emyh wslyqw
Both chariots and horsemen went up with him. It was a very great company.

ואתו עד בית אדרי דאטד די בעברא דירדנא וספדו תמן מספד רב ותקיף לחדא ועבד לאבוהי אבלא שבעא יומין:
ywmyn shbea abla labwhy webd lkhda wthqyp rb mspd thmn wspdw dyrdna bebra dy daTd adry byth ed wathw
They came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they lamented with a very great and severe lamentation. He mourned for his father seven days.

וחזא יתב ארעא כנענאה ית אבלא בבית אדרי דאטד ואמרו אבל תקיף דין למצראי על כן קרא שמה אבל מצרים די בעברא דירדנא:
dyrdna bebra dy mtsrym abl shmh qra kn el lmtsray dyn thqyp abl wamrw daTd adry bbyth abla yth knenah area ythb wkhza
When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

ועבדו בנוהי ליה כן כמא די פקדנון:
pqdnwn dy kma kn lyh bnwhy webdw
His sons did to him just as he commanded them,

ונטלו יתיה בנוהי לארעא דכנען וקברו יתיה במערת חקל כפלתא די זבן אברהם ית חקלא לאחסנת קבורא מן עפרן חתאה על אפי ממרא:
mmra apy el khthah eprn mn qbwra lakhsnth khqla yth abrhm zbn dy kpltha khql bmerth ythyh wqbrw dknen larea bnwhy ythyh wnTlw
for his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field, as a possession for a burial site, from Ephron the Hittite, near Mamre.

ותב יוסף למצרים הוא ואחוהי וכל דסליקו עמיה למקבר ית אבוהי בתר דקבר ית אבוהי:
abwhy yth dqbr bthr abwhy yth lmqbr emyh dslyqw wkl wakhwhy hwa lmtsrym ywsp wthb
Joseph returned into Egypt—he, and his brothers, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

וחזו אחי יוסף ארי מית אבוהון ואמרו דלמא יטר לנא דבבו יוסף ואתבא יתיב לנא ית כל בישתא די גמלנא יתיה:
ythyh gmlna dy byshtha kl yth lna ythyb wathba ywsp dbbw lna yTr dlma wamrw abwhwn myth ary ywsp akhy wkhzw
When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us, and will fully pay us back for all the evil which we did to him.”

ופקידו לות יוסף למימר אבוך פקד קדם מותיה למימר:
lmymr mwthyh qdm pqd abwk lmymr ywsp lwth wpqydw
They sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father commanded before he died, saying,

כדין תימרון ליוסף בבעו שבוק כען לחובא אחיך ולחטאהון ארי בישתא גמלוך וכען שבוק כען לחובא עבדי אלהא דאבוך ובכא יוסף במללותהון עמיה:
emyh bmllwthhwn ywsp wbka dabwk alha ebdy lkhwba ken shbwq wken gmlwk byshtha ary wlkhTahwn akhyk lkhwba ken shbwq bbew lywsp thymrwn kdyn
‘You shall tell Joseph, “Now please forgive the disobedience of your brothers, and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ Now, please forgive the disobedience of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

ואזלו אף אחוהי ונפלו קדמוהי ואמרו הא אנחנא לך לעבדין:
lebdyn lk ankhna ha wamrw qdmwhy wnplw akhwhy ap wazlw
His brothers also went and fell down before his face; and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”
19
ואמר להון יוסף לא תדחלון ארי דחלא דיי אנא:
ana dyy dkhla ary thdkhlwn la ywsp lhwn wamr
Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for am I in the place of God?
20
ואתון חשבתון עלי בישא מן קדם יי אתחשבת לטבא בדיל למעבד כיומא הדין לקימא עם סגי:
sgy em lqyma hdyn kywma lmebd bdyl lTba athkhshbth yy qdm mn bysha ely khshbthwn wathwn
As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to save many people alive, as is happening today.

וכען לא תדחלון אנא אזון יתכון וית טפלכון ונחם יתהון ומלל תנחומין על לבהון:
lbhwn el thnkhwmyn wmll ythhwn wnkhm Tplkwn wyth ythkwn azwn ana thdkhlwn la wken
Now therefore don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones.” He comforted them, and spoke kindly to them.

ויתיב יוסף במצרים הוא ובית אבוהי וחיא יוסף מאה ועסר שנין:
shnyn wesr mah ywsp wkhya abwhy wbyth hwa bmtsrym ywsp wythyb
Joseph lived in Egypt, he, and his father’s house. Joseph lived one hundred ten years.

וחזא יוסף לאפרים בנין תליתאין אף בני מכיר בר מנשה אתילידו ורבי יוסף:
ywsp wrby athylydw mnshh br mkyr bny ap thlythayn bnyn laprym ywsp wkhza
Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation. The children also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph’s knees.

ואמר יוסף לאחוהי אנא מאית ויי מדכר דכיר יתכון ויסק יתכון מן ארעא הדא לארעא די קיים לאברהם ליצחק וליעקב:
wlyeqb lytskhq labrhm qyym dy larea hda area mn ythkwn wysq ythkwn dkyr mdkr wyy mayth ana lakhwhy ywsp wamr
Joseph said to his brothers, “I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”

ואומי יוסף ית בני ישראל למימר מדכר דכיר יי יתכון ותסקון ית גרמי מכא:
mka grmy yth wthsqwn ythkwn yy dkyr mdkr lmymr yshral bny yth ywsp wawmy
Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.”
