והוה בעדנא ההיא ונחת יהודה מלות אחוהי וסטא עד גברא עדלמאה ושמיה חירה:
whwh bedna hhya wnkhth yhwdh mlwth akhwhy wsTa ed gbra edlmah wshmyh khyrh
At that time, Judah went down from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

וחזא תמן יהודה בת גבר תגרא ושמיה שוע ונסבה ועל לותה:
wkhza thmn yhwdh bth gbr thgra wshmyh shwe wnsbh wel lwthh
There, Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite man named Shua. He took her, and went in to her.

ועדיאת וילידת בר וקרא ית שמיה ער:
wedyath wylydth br wqra yth shmyh er
She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him Er.

ועדיאת עוד וילידת בר וקרת ית שמיה אונן:
wedyath ewd wylydth br wqrth yth shmyh awnn
She conceived again, and bore a son; and she named him Onan.

ואוסיפת עוד וילידת בר וקרת ית שמיה שלה והוה בכזיב כד ילידת יתיה:
wawsypth ewd wylydth br wqrth yth shmyh shlh whwh bkzyb kd ylydth ythyh
She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.

ונסיב יהודה אתתא לער בוכריה ושמה תמר:
wnsyb yhwdh aththa ler bwkryh wshmh thmr
Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

והוה ער בוכרא דיהודה ביש קדם יי ואמיתיה יי:
whwh er bwkra dyhwdh bysh qdm yy wamythyh yy
Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in Yahweh’s sight. So Yahweh killed him.
8
ואמר יהודה לאונן עול לות אתת אחוך ויבם יתה ואקים זרעא לאחוך:
wamr yhwdh lawnn ewl lwth athth akhwk wybm ythh waqym zrea lakhwk
Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”

וידע אונן ארי לא על שמיה מתקרי זרעא והוה כד עליל לות אתת אחוהי ומחבל ארחיה על ארעא בדיל דלא לקימא זרעא לאחוהי:
wyde awnn ary la el shmyh mthqry zrea whwh kd elyl lwth athth akhwhy wmkhbl arkhyh el area bdyl dla lqyma zrea lakhwhy
Onan knew that the offspring wouldn’t be his; and when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother.

ובאיש קדם יי די עבד ואמית אף יתיה:
wbaysh qdm yy dy ebd wamyth ap ythyh
The thing which he did was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and he killed him also.

ואמר יהודה לתמר כלתיה תיבי ארמלא בית אביך עד דרבא שלה ברי ארי אמר דלמא ימות אף הוא כאחהי ואזלת תמר ויתיבת בית אבוהא:
wamr yhwdh lthmr klthyh thyby armla byth abyk ed drba shlh bry ary amr dlma ymwth ap hwa kakhhy wazlth thmr wythybth byth abwha
Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up;” for he said, “Lest he also die, like his brothers.” Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.

וסגיאו יומיא ומתת בת שוע אתת יהודא ואתנחם יהודה וסליק על גוזזי עניה הוא וחירה רחמיה עדלמאה לתמנת:
wsgyaw ywmya wmthth bth shwe athth yhwda wathnkhm yhwdh wslyq el gwzzy enyh hwa wkhyrh rkhmyh edlmah lthmnth
After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.

ואתחוא לתמר למימר הא חמויך סלק לתמנת למיגז עניה:
wathkhwa lthmr lmymr ha khmwyk slq lthmnth lmygz enyh
Tamar was told, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

ואעדיאת לבושי ארמלותה מנה ואתכסיאת בעיפא ואתקנת ויתיבת בפרשות עינין די על ארח תמנת ארי חזת ארי רבא שלה והיא לא אתיהיבת ליה לאנתו:
waedyath lbwshy armlwthh mnh wathksyath beypa wathqnth wythybth bprshwth eynyn dy el arkh thmnth ary khzth ary rba shlh whya la athyhybth lyh lanthw
She took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.

וחזאה יהודה וחשבה כנפקת ברא ארי כסיאת אפהא:
wkhzah yhwdh wkhshbh knpqth bra ary ksyath apha
When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
16
וסטא לותה לארחא ואמר הבי כען איעול לותיך ארי לא ידע ארי כלתיה היא ואמרת מה תתן לי ארי תיעול לותי:
wsTa lwthh larkha wamr hby ken ayewl lwthyk ary la yde ary klthyh hya wamrth mh ththn ly ary thyewl lwthy
He turned to her by the way, and said, “Please come, let me come in to you,” for he didn’t know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”
17
ואמר אנא אשלח גדיא בר עזי מן ענא ואמרת אם תתן משכונא עד דתשלח:
wamr ana ashlkh gdya br ezy mn ena wamrth am ththn mshkwna ed dthshlkh
He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”

ואמר מה משכונא די אתן לך ואמרת עזקתך ושושפך וחוטרך די בידך ויהב לה ועל לותה ועדיאת ליה:
wamr mh mshkwna dy athn lk wamrth ezqthk wshwshpk wkhwTrk dy bydk wyhb lh wel lwthh wedyath lyh
He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.

וקמת ואזלת ואעדיאת עיפה מנה ולבישת לבושי ארמלותה:
wqmth wazlth waedyath eyph mnh wlbyshth lbwshy armlwthh
She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20
ושדר יהודה ית גדיא בר עזי בידא רחמיה עדלמאה למסב משכונא מידא דאתתא ולא אשכחה:
wshdr yhwdh yth gdya br ezy byda rkhmyh edlmah lmsb mshkwna myda daththa wla ashkkhh
Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he didn’t find her.

ושאיל ית אנשי אתרה למימר אן מקדשתא היא בעינין על ארחא ואמרו לית הכא מקדשתא:
wshayl yth anshy athrh lmymr an mqdshtha hya beynyn el arkha wamrw lyth hka mqdshtha
Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”

ותב לות יהודה ואמר לא אשכחיתה ואף אנשי אתרא אמרו לית הכא מקדשתא:
wthb lwth yhwdh wamr la ashkkhythh wap anshy athra amrw lyth hka mqdshtha
He returned to Judah, and said, “I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no prostitute here.’”

ואמר יהודה תסב לה דילמא נהי לחוך הא שדרית גדיא הדין ואת לא אשכחתה:
wamr yhwdh thsb lh dylma nhy lkhwk ha shdryth gdya hdyn wath la ashkkhthh
Judah said, “Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”

והוה כתלתות ירחיא ואתחוא ליהודה למימר זניאת תמר כלתך ואף הא מעדיא לזנותא ואמר יהודה אפקוה ותתוקד:
whwh kthlthwth yrkhya wathkhwa lyhwdh lmymr znyath thmr klthk wap ha medya lznwtha wamr yhwdh apqwh wththwqd
About three months later, Judah was told, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute. Moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”

היא מתפקא והיא שלחת לחמוהא למימר לגבר די אלין דיליה מניה אנא מעדיא ואמרת אשתמודע כען למן עזקתא ושושפא וחוטרא האלין:
hya mthpqa whya shlkhth lkhmwha lmymr lgbr dy alyn dylyh mnyh ana medya wamrth ashthmwde ken lmn ezqtha wshwshpa wkhwTra halyn
When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “I am with child by the man who owns these.” She also said, “Please discern whose these are—the signet, and the cords, and the staff.”

ואשתמודע יהודה ואמר זכאה מני מעדיא ארי על כן לא יהבתה לשלה ברי ולא אוסיף עוד למידעה:
washthmwde yhwdh wamr zkah mny medya ary el kn la yhbthh lshlh bry wla awsyp ewd lmydeh
Judah acknowledged them, and said, “She is more righteous than I, because I didn’t give her to Shelah, my son.” He knew her again no more.

והוה בעדן דמילדה והא תיומין במעהא:
whwh bedn dmyldh wha thywmyn bmeha
In the time of her travail, behold, twins were in her womb.

והוה במילדה ויהב ידא ונסיבת חיתא וקטרת על ידיה זהוריתא למימר דין נפק קדמאה:
whwh bmyldh wyhb yda wnsybth khytha wqTrth el ydyh zhwrytha lmymr dyn npq qdmah
When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This came out first.”

והוה כד אתיב ידיה והא נפק אחוהי ואמרת מה תקוף סגי עלך למתקף וקרא שמיה פרץ:
whwh kd athyb ydyh wha npq akhwhy wamrth mh thqwp sgy elk lmthqp wqra shmyh prts
As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, “Why have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez.

ובתר כן נפק אחוהי די על ידיה זהוריתא וקרא שמיה זרח:
wbthr kn npq akhwhy dy el ydyh zhwrytha wqra shmyh zrkh
Afterward his brother came out, who had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.
