והוה בעדנא ההיא ונחת יהודה מלות אחוהי וסטא עד גברא עדלמאה ושמיה חירה:
khyrh wshmyh edlmah gbra ed wsTa akhwhy mlwth yhwdh wnkhth hhya bedna whwh
At that time, Judah went down from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

וחזא תמן יהודה בת גבר תגרא ושמיה שוע ונסבה ועל לותה:
lwthh wel wnsbh shwe wshmyh thgra gbr bth yhwdh thmn wkhza
There, Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite man named Shua. He took her, and went in to her.

ועדיאת וילידת בר וקרא ית שמיה ער:
er shmyh yth wqra br wylydth wedyath
She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him Er.

ועדיאת עוד וילידת בר וקרת ית שמיה אונן:
awnn shmyh yth wqrth br wylydth ewd wedyath
She conceived again, and bore a son; and she named him Onan.

ואוסיפת עוד וילידת בר וקרת ית שמיה שלה והוה בכזיב כד ילידת יתיה:
ythyh ylydth kd bkzyb whwh shlh shmyh yth wqrth br wylydth ewd wawsypth
She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.

ונסיב יהודה אתתא לער בוכריה ושמה תמר:
thmr wshmh bwkryh ler aththa yhwdh wnsyb
Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
7
והוה ער בוכרא דיהודה ביש קדם יי ואמיתיה יי:
yy wamythyh yy qdm bysh dyhwdh bwkra er whwh
Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in Yahweh’s sight. So Yahweh killed him.
8
ואמר יהודה לאונן עול לות אתת אחוך ויבם יתה ואקים זרעא לאחוך:
lakhwk zrea waqym ythh wybm akhwk athth lwth ewl lawnn yhwdh wamr
Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”

וידע אונן ארי לא על שמיה מתקרי זרעא והוה כד עליל לות אתת אחוהי ומחבל ארחיה על ארעא בדיל דלא לקימא זרעא לאחוהי:
lakhwhy zrea lqyma dla bdyl area el arkhyh wmkhbl akhwhy athth lwth elyl kd whwh zrea mthqry shmyh el la ary awnn wyde
Onan knew that the offspring wouldn’t be his; and when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother.

ובאיש קדם יי די עבד ואמית אף יתיה:
ythyh ap wamyth ebd dy yy qdm wbaysh
The thing which he did was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and he killed him also.

ואמר יהודה לתמר כלתיה תיבי ארמלא בית אביך עד דרבא שלה ברי ארי אמר דלמא ימות אף הוא כאחהי ואזלת תמר ויתיבת בית אבוהא:
abwha byth wythybth thmr wazlth kakhhy hwa ap ymwth dlma amr ary bry shlh drba ed abyk byth armla thyby klthyh lthmr yhwdh wamr
Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up;” for he said, “Lest he also die, like his brothers.” Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.

וסגיאו יומיא ומתת בת שוע אתת יהודא ואתנחם יהודה וסליק על גוזזי עניה הוא וחירה רחמיה עדלמאה לתמנת:
lthmnth edlmah rkhmyh wkhyrh hwa enyh gwzzy el wslyq yhwdh wathnkhm yhwda athth shwe bth wmthth ywmya wsgyaw
After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.

ואתחוא לתמר למימר הא חמויך סלק לתמנת למיגז עניה:
enyh lmygz lthmnth slq khmwyk ha lmymr lthmr wathkhwa
Tamar was told, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

ואעדיאת לבושי ארמלותה מנה ואתכסיאת בעיפא ואתקנת ויתיבת בפרשות עינין די על ארח תמנת ארי חזת ארי רבא שלה והיא לא אתיהיבת ליה לאנתו:
lanthw lyh athyhybth la whya shlh rba ary khzth ary thmnth arkh el dy eynyn bprshwth wythybth wathqnth beypa wathksyath mnh armlwthh lbwshy waedyath
She took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.

וחזאה יהודה וחשבה כנפקת ברא ארי כסיאת אפהא:
apha ksyath ary bra knpqth wkhshbh yhwdh wkhzah
When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
16
וסטא לותה לארחא ואמר הבי כען איעול לותיך ארי לא ידע ארי כלתיה היא ואמרת מה תתן לי ארי תיעול לותי:
lwthy thyewl ary ly ththn mh wamrth hya klthyh ary yde la ary lwthyk ayewl ken hby wamr larkha lwthh wsTa
He turned to her by the way, and said, “Please come, let me come in to you,” for he didn’t know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”
17
ואמר אנא אשלח גדיא בר עזי מן ענא ואמרת אם תתן משכונא עד דתשלח:
dthshlkh ed mshkwna ththn am wamrth ena mn ezy br gdya ashlkh ana wamr
He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”

ואמר מה משכונא די אתן לך ואמרת עזקתך ושושפך וחוטרך די בידך ויהב לה ועל לותה ועדיאת ליה:
lyh wedyath lwthh wel lh wyhb bydk dy wkhwTrk wshwshpk ezqthk wamrth lk athn dy mshkwna mh wamr
He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.

וקמת ואזלת ואעדיאת עיפה מנה ולבישת לבושי ארמלותה:
armlwthh lbwshy wlbyshth mnh eyph waedyath wazlth wqmth
She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20
ושדר יהודה ית גדיא בר עזי בידא רחמיה עדלמאה למסב משכונא מידא דאתתא ולא אשכחה:
ashkkhh wla daththa myda mshkwna lmsb edlmah rkhmyh byda ezy br gdya yth yhwdh wshdr
Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he didn’t find her.

ושאיל ית אנשי אתרה למימר אן מקדשתא היא בעינין על ארחא ואמרו לית הכא מקדשתא:
mqdshtha hka lyth wamrw arkha el beynyn hya mqdshtha an lmymr athrh anshy yth wshayl
Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”

ותב לות יהודה ואמר לא אשכחיתה ואף אנשי אתרא אמרו לית הכא מקדשתא:
mqdshtha hka lyth amrw athra anshy wap ashkkhythh la wamr yhwdh lwth wthb
He returned to Judah, and said, “I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no prostitute here.’”

ואמר יהודה תסב לה דילמא נהי לחוך הא שדרית גדיא הדין ואת לא אשכחתה:
ashkkhthh la wath hdyn gdya shdryth ha lkhwk nhy dylma lh thsb yhwdh wamr
Judah said, “Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”

והוה כתלתות ירחיא ואתחוא ליהודה למימר זניאת תמר כלתך ואף הא מעדיא לזנותא ואמר יהודה אפקוה ותתוקד:
wththwqd apqwh yhwdh wamr lznwtha medya ha wap klthk thmr znyath lmymr lyhwdh wathkhwa yrkhya kthlthwth whwh
About three months later, Judah was told, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute. Moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”

היא מתפקא והיא שלחת לחמוהא למימר לגבר די אלין דיליה מניה אנא מעדיא ואמרת אשתמודע כען למן עזקתא ושושפא וחוטרא האלין:
halyn wkhwTra wshwshpa ezqtha lmn ken ashthmwde wamrth medya ana mnyh dylyh alyn dy lgbr lmymr lkhmwha shlkhth whya mthpqa hya
When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “I am with child by the man who owns these.” She also said, “Please discern whose these are—the signet, and the cords, and the staff.”

ואשתמודע יהודה ואמר זכאה מני מעדיא ארי על כן לא יהבתה לשלה ברי ולא אוסיף עוד למידעה:
lmydeh ewd awsyp wla bry lshlh yhbthh la kn el ary medya mny zkah wamr yhwdh washthmwde
Judah acknowledged them, and said, “She is more righteous than I, because I didn’t give her to Shelah, my son.” He knew her again no more.

והוה בעדן דמילדה והא תיומין במעהא:
bmeha thywmyn wha dmyldh bedn whwh
In the time of her travail, behold, twins were in her womb.

והוה במילדה ויהב ידא ונסיבת חיתא וקטרת על ידיה זהוריתא למימר דין נפק קדמאה:
qdmah npq dyn lmymr zhwrytha ydyh el wqTrth khytha wnsybth yda wyhb bmyldh whwh
When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This came out first.”

והוה כד אתיב ידיה והא נפק אחוהי ואמרת מה תקוף סגי עלך למתקף וקרא שמיה פרץ:
prts shmyh wqra lmthqp elk sgy thqwp mh wamrth akhwhy npq wha ydyh athyb kd whwh
As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, “Why have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez.
