ויתיב יעקב בארעא תותבות אבוהי בארעא דכנען:
dknen barea abwhy thwthbwth barea yeqb wythyb
Jacob lived in the land of his father’s travels, in the land of Canaan.
2
אלין תולדת יעקב יוסף בר שבע עסרי שנין הוה רעי עם אחוהי בענא והוא מרבי עם בני בלהה ועם בני זלפה נשי אבוהי ואיתי יוסף ית דבהון בישא לות אבוהון:
abwhwn lwth bysha dbhwn yth ywsp waythy abwhy nshy zlph bny wem blhh bny em mrby whwa bena akhwhy em rey hwh shnyn esry shbe br ywsp yeqb thwldth alyn
This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father.

וישראל רחם ית יוסף מכל בנוהי ארי בר חכים הוא ליה ועבד ליה כתונא דפסי:
dpsy kthwna lyh webd lyh hwa khkym br ary bnwhy mkl ywsp yth rkhm wyshral
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a tunic of many colors.

וחזו אחוהי ארי יתיה רחם אבוהון מכל אחוהי וסנו יתיה ולא צבן למללא עמיה לשלם:
lshlm emyh lmlla tsbn wla ythyh wsnw akhwhy mkl abwhwn rkhm ythyh ary akhwhy wkhzw
His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn’t speak peaceably to him.

וחלם יוסף חלמא וחוי לאחוהי ואוסיפו עוד סנו יתיה:
ythyh snw ewd wawsypw lakhwhy wkhwy khlma ywsp wkhlm
Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.

ואמר להון שמעו כען חלמא הדין די חלמית:
khlmyth dy hdyn khlma ken shmew lhwn wamr
He said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:

והא אנחנא מאסרין אסרן בגו חקלא והא קמת אסרתי ואף אזדקפת והא מסתחרן אסרתכון וסגדן לאסרתי:
lasrthy wsgdn asrthkwn msthkhrn wha azdqpth wap asrthy qmth wha khqla bgw asrn masryn ankhna wha
for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf.”

ואמרו ליה אחוהי המלכו את מדמי לממלך עלנא או שולטן את סביר למשלט בנא ואוסיפו עוד סנו יתיה על חלמוהי ועל פתגמוהי:
pthgmwhy wel khlmwhy el ythyh snw ewd wawsypw bna lmshlT sbyr ath shwlTn aw elna lmmlk mdmy ath hmlkw akhwhy lyh wamrw
His brothers asked him, “Will you indeed reign over us? Will you indeed have dominion over us?” They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.

וחלם עוד חלמא אחרנא ואשתעי יתיה לאחוהי ואמר הא חלמית חלמא עוד והא שמשא וסהרא וחד עשר כוכביא סגדן לי:
ly sgdn kwkbya eshr wkhd wshra shmsha wha ewd khlma khlmyth ha wamr lakhwhy ythyh washthey akhrna khlma ewd wkhlm
He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.”

ואשתעי לאבוהי ולאחוהי ונזף ביה אבוהי ואמר ליה מה חלמא הדין די חלמתא המיתא ניתי אנא ואמך ואחיך למסגד לך על ארעא:

He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to the earth before you?”

וקניאו ביה אחוהי ואבוהי נטר ית פתגמא:
pthgma yth nTr wabwhy akhwhy byh wqnyaw
His brothers envied him, but his father kept this saying in mind.
12
ואזלו אחוהי למרעי ית ענא דאבוהון בשכם:
bshkm dabwhwn ena yth lmrey akhwhy wazlw
His brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.
13
ואמר ישראל ליוסף הלא אחיך רען בשכם אתא ואשלחנך לותהון ואמר ליה הא אנא:
ana ha lyh wamr lwthhwn washlkhnk atha bshkm ren akhyk hla lywsp yshral wamr
Israel said to Joseph, “Aren’t your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” He said to him, “Here I am.”

ואמר ליה אזיל כען חזי ית שלמא דאחוך וית שלמא דענא ואתבני פתגמא ושלחיה ממישר חברון ואתא לשכם:
lshkm watha khbrwn mmyshr wshlkhyh pthgma wathbny dena shlma wyth dakhwk shlma yth khzy ken azyl lyh wamr
He said to him, “Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

ואשכחיה גברא והא תעי בחקלא ושאלניה גברא למימר מה את בעי:
bey ath mh lmymr gbra wshalnyh bkhqla they wha gbra washkkhyh
A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. The man asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16
ואמר ית אחי אנא בעי חוי כען לי היכא אנון רען:
ren anwn hyka ly ken khwy bey ana akhy yth wamr
He said, “I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock.”
17
ואמר גברא נטלו מכא ארי שמעית דאמרין ניזל לדתן ואזל יוסף בתר אחוהי ואשכחנון בדתן:
bdthn washkkhnwn akhwhy bthr ywsp wazl ldthn nyzl damryn shmeyth ary mka nTlw gbra wamr
The man said, “They have left here, for I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’” Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.

וחזו יתיה מרחיק עד לא קריב לותהון וחשיבו עלוהי למקטליה:
lmqTlyh elwhy wkhshybw lwthhwn qryb la ed mrkhyq ythyh wkhzw
They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.
19
ואמרו גבר לאחוהי הא מרי חלמיא דיכי אתא:
atha dyky khlmya mry ha lakhwhy gbr wamrw
They said to one another, “Behold, this dreamer comes.
20
וכען אתו ונקטלניה ונרמניה בחדא מן גביא ונימר חיתא בישתא אכלתיה ונחזי מה יהון בסוף חלמוהי:
khlmwhy bswp yhwn mh wnkhzy aklthyh byshtha khytha wnymr gbya mn bkhda wnrmnyh wnqTlnyh athw wken
Come now therefore, and let’s kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil animal has devoured him.’ We will see what will become of his dreams.”

ושמע ראובן ושזביה מידיהון ואמר לא נקטלניה נפש:
npsh nqTlnyh la wamr mydyhwn wshzbyh rawbn wshme
Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, “Let’s not take his life.”
22
ואמר להון ראובן לא תושדון דמא רמו יתיה לגבא הדין די במדברא וידא לא תושטון ביה בדיל לשיזבא יתיה מידיהון לאתבותיה לות אבוהי:
abwhy lwth lathbwthyh mydyhwn ythyh lshyzba bdyl byh thwshTwn la wyda bmdbra dy hdyn lgba ythyh rmw dma thwshdwn la rawbn lhwn wamr
Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.

והוה כד על יוסף לות אחוהי ואשלחו ית יוסף ית כתוניה ית כתונא דפסי די עלוהי:
elwhy dy dpsy kthwna yth kthwnyh yth ywsp yth washlkhw akhwhy lwth ywsp el kd whwh
When Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him;

ונסבוהי ורמו יתיה לגבא וגבא ריקא לית ביה מיא:
mya byh lyth ryqa wgba lgba ythyh wrmw wnsbwhy
and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.
25
ואסחרו למיכל לחמא וזקפו עיניהון וחזו והא שירת ערבאי אתיא מגלעד וגמליהון טעינין שעף וקטף ולטום אזלין לאחתא למצרים:
lmtsrym lakhtha azlyn wlTwm wqTp shep Teynyn wgmlyhwn mgled athya erbay shyrth wha wkhzw eynyhwn wzqpw lkhma lmykl waskhrw
They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

ואמר יהודה לאחוהי מה ממון נתהני לנא ארי נקטול ית אחונא ונכסי על דמיה:
dmyh el wnksy akhwna yth nqTwl ary lna nthhny mmwn mh lakhwhy yhwdh wamr
Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?

אתו ונזבנניה לערבאי וידנא לא תהי ביה ארי אחונא בסרנא הוא וקבילו מניה אחוהי:
akhwhy mnyh wqbylw hwa bsrna akhwna ary byh thhy la wydna lerbay wnzbnnyh athw
Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.” His brothers listened to him.
28
ועברו גברי מדינאי תגרי ונגידו ואסיקו ית יוסף מן גבא וזבינו ית יוסף לערבאי בעסרין כסף ואיתיו ית יוסף למצרים:
lmtsrym ywsp yth waythyw ksp besryn lerbay ywsp yth wzbynw gba mn ywsp yth wasyqw wngydw thgry mdynay gbry webrw
Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. The merchants brought Joseph into Egypt.

ותב ראובן לגבא והא לית יוסף בגבא ובזע ית לבושוהי:
lbwshwhy yth wbze bgba ywsp lyth wha lgba rawbn wthb
Reuben returned to the pit, and saw that Joseph wasn’t in the pit; and he tore his clothes.
30
ותב לות אחוהי ואמר עולימא ליתוהי ואנא לאן אנא אתי:
athy ana lan wana lythwhy ewlyma wamr akhwhy lwth wthb
He returned to his brothers, and said, “The child is no more; and I, where will I go?”
31
ונסיבו ית כתונא דיוסף ונכיסו צפיר בר עזי וטבלו ית כתונא בדמא:
bdma kthwna yth wTblw ezy br tspyr wnkysw dywsp kthwna yth wnsybw
They took Joseph’s tunic, and killed a male goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood.

ושלחו ית כתונא דפסי ואיתיו לות אבוהון ואמרו דא אשכחנא אשתמודע כען הכתונא דברך היא אם לא:
la am hya dbrk hkthwna ken ashthmwde ashkkhna da wamrw abwhwn lwth waythyw dpsy kthwna yth wshlkhw
They took the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Examine it, now, and see if it is your son’s tunic or not.”
33
ואשתמודעה ואמר כתונא דברי חיתא בישתא אכלתיה מקטל קטיל יוסף:
ywsp qTyl mqTl aklthyh byshtha khytha dbry kthwna wamr washthmwdeh
He recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s tunic. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.”
34
ובזע יעקב לבושוהי ואסר שקא בחרציה ואתאבל על בריה יומין סגיאין:
sgyayn ywmyn bryh el wathabl bkhrtsyh shqa wasr lbwshwhy yeqb wbze
Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.
35
וקמו כל בנוהי וכל בנתיה לנחמותיה וסריב לקבלא תנחומין ואמר ארי אחות לות ברי כד אבילא לשאול ובכא יתיה אבוהי:
abwhy ythyh wbka lshawl abyla kd bry lwth akhwth ary wamr thnkhwmyn lqbla wsryb lnkhmwthyh bnthyh wkl bnwhy kl wqmw
All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. He said, “For I will go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” His father wept for him.
