ויתיב יעקב בארעא תותבות אבוהי בארעא דכנען:
wythyb yeqb barea thwthbwth abwhy barea dknen
Jacob lived in the land of his father’s travels, in the land of Canaan.

אלין תולדת יעקב יוסף בר שבע עסרי שנין הוה רעי עם אחוהי בענא והוא מרבי עם בני בלהה ועם בני זלפה נשי אבוהי ואיתי יוסף ית דבהון בישא לות אבוהון:

This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father.

וישראל רחם ית יוסף מכל בנוהי ארי בר חכים הוא ליה ועבד ליה כתונא דפסי:
wyshral rkhm yth ywsp mkl bnwhy ary br khkym hwa lyh webd lyh kthwna dpsy
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a tunic of many colors.

וחזו אחוהי ארי יתיה רחם אבוהון מכל אחוהי וסנו יתיה ולא צבן למללא עמיה לשלם:
wkhzw akhwhy ary ythyh rkhm abwhwn mkl akhwhy wsnw ythyh wla tsbn lmlla emyh lshlm
His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn’t speak peaceably to him.

וחלם יוסף חלמא וחוי לאחוהי ואוסיפו עוד סנו יתיה:
wkhlm ywsp khlma wkhwy lakhwhy wawsypw ewd snw ythyh
Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.

ואמר להון שמעו כען חלמא הדין די חלמית:
wamr lhwn shmew ken khlma hdyn dy khlmyth
He said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:

והא אנחנא מאסרין אסרן בגו חקלא והא קמת אסרתי ואף אזדקפת והא מסתחרן אסרתכון וסגדן לאסרתי:
wha ankhna masryn asrn bgw khqla wha qmth asrthy wap azdqpth wha msthkhrn asrthkwn wsgdn lasrthy
for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf.”

ואמרו ליה אחוהי המלכו את מדמי לממלך עלנא או שולטן את סביר למשלט בנא ואוסיפו עוד סנו יתיה על חלמוהי ועל פתגמוהי:
wamrw lyh akhwhy hmlkw ath mdmy lmmlk elna aw shwlTn ath sbyr lmshlT bna wawsypw ewd snw ythyh el khlmwhy wel pthgmwhy
His brothers asked him, “Will you indeed reign over us? Will you indeed have dominion over us?” They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.

וחלם עוד חלמא אחרנא ואשתעי יתיה לאחוהי ואמר הא חלמית חלמא עוד והא שמשא וסהרא וחד עשר כוכביא סגדן לי:
wkhlm ewd khlma akhrna washthey ythyh lakhwhy wamr ha khlmyth khlma ewd wha shmsha wshra wkhd eshr kwkbya sgdn ly
He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.”

ואשתעי לאבוהי ולאחוהי ונזף ביה אבוהי ואמר ליה מה חלמא הדין די חלמתא המיתא ניתי אנא ואמך ואחיך למסגד לך על ארעא:

He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to the earth before you?”

וקניאו ביה אחוהי ואבוהי נטר ית פתגמא:
wqnyaw byh akhwhy wabwhy nTr yth pthgma
His brothers envied him, but his father kept this saying in mind.

ואזלו אחוהי למרעי ית ענא דאבוהון בשכם:
wazlw akhwhy lmrey yth ena dabwhwn bshkm
His brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.
13
ואמר ישראל ליוסף הלא אחיך רען בשכם אתא ואשלחנך לותהון ואמר ליה הא אנא:
wamr yshral lywsp hla akhyk ren bshkm atha washlkhnk lwthhwn wamr lyh ha ana
Israel said to Joseph, “Aren’t your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” He said to him, “Here I am.”

ואמר ליה אזיל כען חזי ית שלמא דאחוך וית שלמא דענא ואתבני פתגמא ושלחיה ממישר חברון ואתא לשכם:
wamr lyh azyl ken khzy yth shlma dakhwk wyth shlma dena wathbny pthgma wshlkhyh mmyshr khbrwn watha lshkm
He said to him, “Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

ואשכחיה גברא והא תעי בחקלא ושאלניה גברא למימר מה את בעי:
washkkhyh gbra wha they bkhqla wshalnyh gbra lmymr mh ath bey
A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. The man asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16
ואמר ית אחי אנא בעי חוי כען לי היכא אנון רען:
wamr yth akhy ana bey khwy ken ly hyka anwn ren
He said, “I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock.”
17
ואמר גברא נטלו מכא ארי שמעית דאמרין ניזל לדתן ואזל יוסף בתר אחוהי ואשכחנון בדתן:
wamr gbra nTlw mka ary shmeyth damryn nyzl ldthn wazl ywsp bthr akhwhy washkkhnwn bdthn
The man said, “They have left here, for I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’” Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.

וחזו יתיה מרחיק עד לא קריב לותהון וחשיבו עלוהי למקטליה:
wkhzw ythyh mrkhyq ed la qryb lwthhwn wkhshybw elwhy lmqTlyh
They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.
19
ואמרו גבר לאחוהי הא מרי חלמיא דיכי אתא:
wamrw gbr lakhwhy ha mry khlmya dyky atha
They said to one another, “Behold, this dreamer comes.
20
וכען אתו ונקטלניה ונרמניה בחדא מן גביא ונימר חיתא בישתא אכלתיה ונחזי מה יהון בסוף חלמוהי:
wken athw wnqTlnyh wnrmnyh bkhda mn gbya wnymr khytha byshtha aklthyh wnkhzy mh yhwn bswp khlmwhy
Come now therefore, and let’s kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil animal has devoured him.’ We will see what will become of his dreams.”

ושמע ראובן ושזביה מידיהון ואמר לא נקטלניה נפש:
wshme rawbn wshzbyh mydyhwn wamr la nqTlnyh npsh
Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, “Let’s not take his life.”
22
ואמר להון ראובן לא תושדון דמא רמו יתיה לגבא הדין די במדברא וידא לא תושטון ביה בדיל לשיזבא יתיה מידיהון לאתבותיה לות אבוהי:
wamr lhwn rawbn la thwshdwn dma rmw ythyh lgba hdyn dy bmdbra wyda la thwshTwn byh bdyl lshyzba ythyh mydyhwn lathbwthyh lwth abwhy
Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.

והוה כד על יוסף לות אחוהי ואשלחו ית יוסף ית כתוניה ית כתונא דפסי די עלוהי:
whwh kd el ywsp lwth akhwhy washlkhw yth ywsp yth kthwnyh yth kthwna dpsy dy elwhy
When Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him;

ונסבוהי ורמו יתיה לגבא וגבא ריקא לית ביה מיא:
wnsbwhy wrmw ythyh lgba wgba ryqa lyth byh mya
and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.
25
ואסחרו למיכל לחמא וזקפו עיניהון וחזו והא שירת ערבאי אתיא מגלעד וגמליהון טעינין שעף וקטף ולטום אזלין לאחתא למצרים:
waskhrw lmykl lkhma wzqpw eynyhwn wkhzw wha shyrth erbay athya mgled wgmlyhwn Teynyn shep wqTp wlTwm azlyn lakhtha lmtsrym
They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

ואמר יהודה לאחוהי מה ממון נתהני לנא ארי נקטול ית אחונא ונכסי על דמיה:
wamr yhwdh lakhwhy mh mmwn nthhny lna ary nqTwl yth akhwna wnksy el dmyh
Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?

אתו ונזבנניה לערבאי וידנא לא תהי ביה ארי אחונא בסרנא הוא וקבילו מניה אחוהי:
athw wnzbnnyh lerbay wydna la thhy byh ary akhwna bsrna hwa wqbylw mnyh akhwhy
Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.” His brothers listened to him.

ועברו גברי מדינאי תגרי ונגידו ואסיקו ית יוסף מן גבא וזבינו ית יוסף לערבאי בעסרין כסף ואיתיו ית יוסף למצרים:

Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. The merchants brought Joseph into Egypt.

ותב ראובן לגבא והא לית יוסף בגבא ובזע ית לבושוהי:
wthb rawbn lgba wha lyth ywsp bgba wbze yth lbwshwhy
Reuben returned to the pit, and saw that Joseph wasn’t in the pit; and he tore his clothes.
30
ותב לות אחוהי ואמר עולימא ליתוהי ואנא לאן אנא אתי:
wthb lwth akhwhy wamr ewlyma lythwhy wana lan ana athy
He returned to his brothers, and said, “The child is no more; and I, where will I go?”
31
ונסיבו ית כתונא דיוסף ונכיסו צפיר בר עזי וטבלו ית כתונא בדמא:
wnsybw yth kthwna dywsp wnkysw tspyr br ezy wTblw yth kthwna bdma
They took Joseph’s tunic, and killed a male goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood.

ושלחו ית כתונא דפסי ואיתיו לות אבוהון ואמרו דא אשכחנא אשתמודע כען הכתונא דברך היא אם לא:
wshlkhw yth kthwna dpsy waythyw lwth abwhwn wamrw da ashkkhna ashthmwde ken hkthwna dbrk hya am la
They took the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Examine it, now, and see if it is your son’s tunic or not.”
33
ואשתמודעה ואמר כתונא דברי חיתא בישתא אכלתיה מקטל קטיל יוסף:
washthmwdeh wamr kthwna dbry khytha byshtha aklthyh mqTl qTyl ywsp
He recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s tunic. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.”
34
ובזע יעקב לבושוהי ואסר שקא בחרציה ואתאבל על בריה יומין סגיאין:
wbze yeqb lbwshwhy wasr shqa bkhrtsyh wathabl el bryh ywmyn sgyayn
Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.

וקמו כל בנוהי וכל בנתיה לנחמותיה וסריב לקבלא תנחומין ואמר ארי אחות לות ברי כד אבילא לשאול ובכא יתיה אבוהי:
wqmw kl bnwhy wkl bnthyh lnkhmwthyh wsryb lqbla thnkhwmyn wamr ary akhwth lwth bry kd abyla lshawl wbka ythyh abwhy
All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. He said, “For I will go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” His father wept for him.

ומדינאי זבינו יתיה למצרים לפוטיפר רבא דפרעה רב קטוליא:
wmdynay zbynw ythyh lmtsrym lpwTypr rba dpreh rb qTwlya
The Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard.
