ואמר יי ליעקב קום סק לבית אל ותיב תמן ועבד תמן מדבחא לאלהא דאתגלי לך במערקך מן קדם עשו אחוך:
wamr yy lyeqb qwm sq lbyth al wthyb thmn webd thmn mdbkha lalha dathgly lk bmerqk mn qdm eshw akhwk
God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and live there. Make there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

ואמר יעקב לאנש ביתיה ולכל די עמיה אעדו ית טעות עממיא די ביניכון ואדכו ושנו כסותכון:
wamr yeqb lansh bythyh wlkl dy emyh aedw yth Tewth emmya dy bynykwn wadkw wshnw kswthkwn
Then Jacob said to his household, and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments.

ונקום ונסק לבית אל ואעבד תמן מדבחא לאלהא דקבל צלותי ביומא דעקתי והוה מימריה בסעדי בארחא די אזלית:
wnqwm wnsq lbyth al waebd thmn mdbkha lalha dqbl tslwthy bywma deqthy whwh mymryh bsedy barkha dy azlyth
Let’s arise, and go up to Bethel. I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me on the way which I went.”

ויהבו ליעקב ית כל טעות עממיא די בידיהון וית קדשיא די באודניהון וטמר יתהון יעקב תחות בטמא די עם שכם:
wyhbw lyeqb yth kl Tewth emmya dy bydyhwn wyth qdshya dy bawdnyhwn wTmr ythhwn yeqb thkhwth bTma dy em shkm
They gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the rings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

ונטלו והות דחלא דיי על עממיא די בקרוי סחרניהון ולא רדפו בתר בני יעקב:
wnTlw whwth dkhla dyy el emmya dy bqrwy skhrnyhwn wla rdpw bthr bny yeqb
They traveled, and a terror of God was on the cities that were around them, and they didn’t pursue the sons of Jacob.

ואתא יעקב ללוז די בארעא דכנען היא בית אל הוא וכל עמא די עמיה:
watha yeqb llwz dy barea dknen hya byth al hwa wkl ema dy emyh
So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.

ובנא תמן מדבחא וקרא לאתרא אל בית אל ארי תמן אתגלי ליה יי במערקיה מן קדם אחוהי:
wbna thmn mdbkha wqra lathra al byth al ary thmn athgly lyh yy bmerqyh mn qdm akhwhy
He built an altar there, and called the place El Beth El; because there God was revealed to him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

ומיתת דבורה מנקתא דרבקה ואתקברת מלרע לבית אל בשפולי מישרא וקרא שמיה מישר בכיתא:
wmythth dbwrh mnqtha drbqh wathqbrth mlre lbyth al bshpwly myshra wqra shmyh myshr bkytha
Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; and its name was called Allon Bacuth.

ואתגלי יי ליעקב עוד במיתוהי מפדן ארם ובריך יתיה:
wathgly yy lyeqb ewd bmythwhy mpdn arm wbryk ythyh
God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan Aram, and blessed him.

ואמר ליה יי שמך יעקב לא יתקרי שמך עוד יעקב אלהין ישראל יהא שמך וקרא ית שמיה ישראל:
wamr lyh yy shmk yeqb la ythqry shmk ewd yeqb alhyn yshral yha shmk wqra yth shmyh yshral
God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. Your name shall not be Jacob any more, but your name will be Israel.” He named him Israel.

ואמר ליה יי אנא אל שדי פוש וסגי עם וכנשת שבטין יהא מנך ומלכין דשליטין בעממיא מנך יפקון:
wamr lyh yy ana al shdy pwsh wsgy em wknshth shbTyn yha mnk wmlkyn dshlyTyn bemmya mnk ypqwn
God said to him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your body.

וית ארעא די יהבית לאברהם וליצחק לך אתננה ולבנך בתרך אתן ית ארעא:
wyth area dy yhbyth labrhm wlytskhq lk athnnh wlbnk bthrk athn yth area
The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, and to your offspring after you I will give the land.”

ואסתלק מעלוהי יקרא דיי באתרא די מליל עמיה:
wasthlq melwhy yqra dyy bathra dy mlyl emyh
God went up from him in the place where he spoke with him.

ואקים יעקב קמתא באתרא די מליל עמיה קמת אבנא ואסיך עלה נסוכין ואריק עלה משחא:
waqym yeqb qmtha bathra dy mlyl emyh qmth abna wasyk elh nswkyn waryq elh mshkha
Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he spoke with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it, and poured oil on it.

וקרא יעקב ית שמא דאתרא די מליל עמיה תמן יי בית אל:
wqra yeqb yth shma dathra dy mlyl emyh thmn yy byth al
Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him “Bethel”.
16
ונטלו מבית אל והוה עוד כרובת ארעא למיעל לאפרת וילידת רחל וקשיאת במילדה:
wnTlw mbyth al whwh ewd krwbth area lmyel laprth wylydth rkhl wqshyath bmyldh
They traveled from Bethel. There was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and Rachel travailed. She had hard labor.

והוה בקשיותה במילדה ואמרת לה חיתא לא תדחלי ארי אף דין ליך בר:
whwh bqshywthh bmyldh wamrth lh khytha la thdkhly ary ap dyn lyk br
When she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for now you will have another son.”

והוה במפק נפשה ארי מיתת וקרת שמיה בר דוי ואבוהי קרא ליה בנימין:
whwh bmpq npshh ary mythth wqrth shmyh br dwy wabwhy qra lyh bnymyn
As her soul was departing (for she died), she named him Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin.

ומיתת רחל ואתקברת בארח אפרת היא בית לחם:
wmythth rkhl wathqbrth barkh aprth hya byth lkhm
Rachel died, and was buried on the way to Ephrath (also called Bethlehem).

ואקים יעקב קמתא על קברתה היא קמת קברתא דרחל עד יומא דין:
waqym yeqb qmtha el qbrthh hya qmth qbrtha drkhl ed ywma dyn
Jacob set up a pillar on her grave. The same is the Pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.
21
ונטל ישראל ופרס משכניה מלהלא למגדלא דעדר:
wnTl yshral wprs mshknyh mlhla lmgdla dedr
Israel traveled, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
22
והוה כד שרא ישראל בארעא ההיא ואזל ראובן ושכיב עם בלהה לחינתא דאבוהי ושמע ישראל והוו בני יעקב תרי עסר:
whwh kd shra yshral barea hhya wazl rawbn wshkyb em blhh lkhyntha dabwhy wshme yshral whww bny yeqb thry esr
While Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.

בני לאה בוכרא דיעקב ראובן ושמעון ולוי ויהודה ויששכר וזבלון:
bny lah bwkra dyeqb rawbn wshmewn wlwy wyhwdh wyshshkr wzblwn
The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob’s firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.

ובני בלהה אמתא דרחל דן ונפתלי:
wbny blhh amtha drkhl dn wnpthly
The sons of Bilhah (Rachel’s servant): Dan and Naphtali.
26
ובני זלפה אמתא דלאה גד ואשר אלין בני יעקב די אתילידן ליה בפדן ארם:
wbny zlph amtha dlah gd washr alyn bny yeqb dy athylydn lyh bpdn arm
The sons of Zilpah (Leah’s servant): Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.

ואתא יעקב לות יצחק אבוהי ממרא קרית ארבע היא חברון די דר תמן אברהם ויצחק:
watha yeqb lwth ytskhq abwhy mmra qryth arbe hya khbrwn dy dr thmn abrhm wytskhq
Jacob came to Isaac his father, to Mamre, to Kiriath Arba (which is Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac lived as foreigners.

והוו יומי יצחק מאה ותמנן שנין:
whww ywmy ytskhq mah wthmnn shnyn
The days of Isaac were one hundred eighty years.
29
ואתנגיד יצחק ומית ואתכניש לעמיה סיב ושבע יומין וקברו יתיה עשו ויעקב בנוהי:
wathngyd ytskhq wmyth wathknysh lemyh syb wshbe ywmyn wqbrw ythyh eshw wyeqb bnwhy
Isaac gave up the spirit and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. Esau and Jacob, his sons, buried him.
