1
ואקדם לבן בצפרא ונשק לבנוהי ולבנתיה ובריך יתהן ואזל ותב לבן לאתריה:
lathryh lbn wthb wazl ythhn wbryk wlbnthyh lbnwhy wnshq btspra lbn waqdm
Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

ויעקב אזל לארחיה וערעו ביה מלאכיא דיי:
dyy mlakya byh werew larkhyh azl wyeqb
When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s army.” He called the name of that place Mahanaim.

ואמר יעקב כד חזנון משריתא מן קדם יי דין וקרא שמא דאתרא ההוא מחנים:
mkhnym hhwa dathra shma wqra dyn yy qdm mn mshrytha khznwn kd yeqb wamr
Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.

ושלח יעקב אזגדין קדמוהי לות עשו אחוהי לארעא דשעיר לחקל אדום:
adwm lkhql dsheyr larea akhwhy eshw lwth qdmwhy azgdyn yeqb wshlkh
He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.

ופקיד יתהון למימר כדין תימרון לרבוני לעשו כדנן אמר עבדך יעקב עם לבן דרית ואוחרית עד כען:
ken ed wawkhryth dryth lbn em yeqb ebdk amr kdnn leshw lrbwny thymrwn kdyn lmymr ythhwn wpqyd
I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”

והוה לי תורין וחמרין עאן ועבדין ואמהן ושלחית לחואה לרבוני לאשכחא רחמין בעינך:
beynk rkhmyn lashkkha lrbwny lkhwah wshlkhyth wamhn webdyn ean wkhmryn thwryn ly whwh
The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

ותבו אזגדיא לות יעקב למימר אתינא לות אחוך לות עשו ואף אתי לקדמותך וארבע מאה גברא עמיה:
emyh gbra mah warbe lqdmwthk athy wap eshw lwth akhwk lwth athyna lmymr yeqb lwth azgdya wthbw
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, along with the flocks, the herds, and the camels, into two companies.

ודחיל יעקב לחדא ועקת ליה ופליג ית עמא די עמיה וית ענא וית תורי וגמליא לתרין משירין:
mshyryn lthryn wgmlya thwry wyth ena wyth emyh dy ema yth wplyg lyh weqth lkhda yeqb wdkhyl
He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”

ואמר אם ייתי עשו למשריתא חדא וימחניה ויהי משריתא דתשתאר לשיזבא:
lshyzba dthshthar mshrytha wyhy wymkhnyh khda lmshrytha eshw yythy am wamr
Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh, who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,’

ואמר יעקב אלהה דאבא אברהם ואלהה דאבא יצחק יי די אמר לי תוב לארעך ולילדותך ואוטיב עמך:
emk wawTyb wlyldwthk larek thwb ly amr dy yy ytskhq daba walhh abrhm daba alhh yeqb wamr
I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.

זעירן זכותי מכל חסדין ומכל טבון די עבדת עם עבדך ארי יחידי עברית ית ירדנא הדין וכען הויתי לתרין משרין:
mshryn lthryn hwythy wken hdyn yrdna yth ebryth ykhydy ary ebdk em ebdth dy Tbwn wmkl khsdyn mkl zkwthy zeyrn
Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me and the mothers with the children.

שזבני כען מידא דאחי מידא דעשו ארי דחל אנא מניה דילמא ייתי וימחנני אמא על בניא:
bnya el ama wymkhnny yythy dylma mnyh ana dkhl ary deshw myda dakhy myda ken shzbny
You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”

ואת אמרת אוטבא אוטיב עמך ואשוי ית בנך סגיאין כחלא דימא די לא יתמנון מסגי:
msgy ythmnwn la dy dyma kkhla sgyayn bnk yth washwy emk awTyb awTba amrth wath
He stayed there that night, and took from that which he had with him a present for Esau, his brother:

ובת תמן בליליא ההוא ונסיב מן דאיתי בידיה תקרבתא לעשו אחוהי:
akhwhy leshw thqrbtha bydyh daythy mn wnsyb hhwa blylya thmn wbth
two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

עזי מאתן ותישיא עסרין רחלין מאתן ודכרין עסרין:
esryn wdkryn mathn rkhlyn esryn wthyshya mathn ezy
thirty milk camels and their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.

גמלי מנקתא ובניהון תלתין תורתא ארבעין ותורי עסרא אתנן עסרין ועירי עסרא:
esra weyry esryn athnn esra wthwry arbeyn thwrtha thlthyn wbnyhwn mnqtha gmly
He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd.”

ויהב ביד עבדוהי עדרא עדרא בלחודוהי ואמר לעבדוהי עברו קדמי ורוחא תשוון בין עדרא ובין עדרא:
edra wbyn edra byn thshwwn wrwkha qdmy ebrw lebdwhy wamr blkhwdwhy edra edra ebdwhy byd wyhb
He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’

ופקיד ית קדמאה למימר ארי יערענך עשו אחי ושאלנך למימר למן את ולאן את אזל ולמן אלין דקדמך:
dqdmk alyn wlmn azl ath wlan ath lmn lmymr wshalnk akhy eshw yerenk ary lmymr qdmah yth wpqyd
Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”

ותימר לעבדך ליעקב תקרבתא היא דמשלחא לרבוני לעשו והא אף הוא אתי בתרנא:
bthrna athy hwa ap wha leshw lrbwny dmshlkha hya thqrbtha lyeqb lebdk wthymr
He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.

ופקיד אף ית תנינא אף ית תליתאה אף ית כל דאזלין בתר עדריא למימר כפתגמא הדין תמללון עם עשו כד תשכחון יתיה:
ythyh thshkkhwn kd eshw em thmllwn hdyn kpthgma lmymr edrya bthr dazlyn kl yth ap thlythah yth ap thnyna yth ap wpqyd
You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”

ותימרון אף הא עבדך יעקב אתי בתרנא ארי אמר אנחניה לרוגזיה בתקרבתא דאזלת לקדמי ובתר כן אחזי אפוהי מאים יסב אפי:
apy ysb maym apwhy akhzy kn wbthr lqdmy dazlth bthqrbtha lrwgzyh ankhnyh amr ary bthrna athy yeqb ebdk ha ap wthymrwn
So the present passed over before him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.

ועברת תקרבתא על אפוהי והוא בת בליליא ההוא במשריתא:
bmshrytha hhwa blylya bth whwa apwhy el thqrbtha webrth
He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok.
23
וקם בליליא הוא ודבר ית תרתין נשוהי וית תרתין לחינתיה וית חד עסר בנוהי ועבר ית מעבר יובקא:
ywbqa mebr yth webr bnwhy esr khd wyth lkhynthyh thrthyn wyth nshwhy thrthyn yth wdbr hwa blylya wqm
He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.

ודברנון ועברנון ית נחלא ואעבר ית דיליה:
dylyh yth waebr nkhla yth webrnwn wdbrnwn
Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.
25
ואשתאר יעקב בלחודוהי ואשתדל גברא עמיה עד דסלק צפרא:
tspra dslq ed emyh gbra washthdl blkhwdwhy yeqb washthar
When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.

וחזא ארי לא יכיל ליה וקריב בפתי ירכיה וזע פתי ירכא דיעקב באשתדלותיה עמיה:
emyh bashthdlwthyh dyeqb yrka pthy wze yrkyh bpthy wqryb lyh ykyl la ary wkhza
The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”

ואמר שלחני ארי סליק צפרא ואמר לא אשלחנך אלהין ברכתני:
brkthny alhyn ashlkhnk la wamr tspra slyq ary shlkhny wamr
He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
28
ואמר ליה מה שמך ואמר יעקב:
yeqb wamr shmk mh lyh wamr
He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
29
ואמר לא יעקב יתאמר עוד שמך אלהין ישראל ארי רברבת קדם יי ועם גובריא ויכלתא:
wykltha gwbrya wem yy qdm rbrbth ary yshral alhyn shmk ewd ythamr yeqb la wamr
Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.

ושאל יעקב ואמר חוי כען שמך ואמר למה דנן את שאל לשמי ובריך יתיה תמן:
thmn ythyh wbryk lshmy shal ath dnn lmh wamr shmk ken khwy wamr yeqb wshal
Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

וקרא יעקב שמא דאתרא פניאל ארי חזיתי מלאכיא דיי אפין באפין ואשתזבת נפשי:
npshy washthzbth bapyn apyn dyy mlakya khzythy ary pnyal dathra shma yeqb wqra
The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
32
ודנח ליה שמשא כמא די עבר ית פנואל והוא מטלע על ירכיה:
yrkyh el mTle whwa pnwal yth ebr dy kma shmsha lyh wdnkh
Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
