ואקדם לבן בצפרא ונשק לבנוהי ולבנתיה ובריך יתהן ואזל ותב לבן לאתריה:
waqdm lbn btspra wnshq lbnwhy wlbnthyh wbryk ythhn wazl wthb lbn lathryh
Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

ויעקב אזל לארחיה וערעו ביה מלאכיא דיי:
wyeqb azl larkhyh werew byh mlakya dyy
When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s army.” He called the name of that place Mahanaim.

ואמר יעקב כד חזנון משריתא מן קדם יי דין וקרא שמא דאתרא ההוא מחנים:
wamr yeqb kd khznwn mshrytha mn qdm yy dyn wqra shma dathra hhwa mkhnym
Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.

ושלח יעקב אזגדין קדמוהי לות עשו אחוהי לארעא דשעיר לחקל אדום:
wshlkh yeqb azgdyn qdmwhy lwth eshw akhwhy larea dsheyr lkhql adwm
He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.

ופקיד יתהון למימר כדין תימרון לרבוני לעשו כדנן אמר עבדך יעקב עם לבן דרית ואוחרית עד כען:
wpqyd ythhwn lmymr kdyn thymrwn lrbwny leshw kdnn amr ebdk yeqb em lbn dryth wawkhryth ed ken
I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”

והוה לי תורין וחמרין עאן ועבדין ואמהן ושלחית לחואה לרבוני לאשכחא רחמין בעינך:
whwh ly thwryn wkhmryn ean webdyn wamhn wshlkhyth lkhwah lrbwny lashkkha rkhmyn beynk
The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

ותבו אזגדיא לות יעקב למימר אתינא לות אחוך לות עשו ואף אתי לקדמותך וארבע מאה גברא עמיה:
wthbw azgdya lwth yeqb lmymr athyna lwth akhwk lwth eshw wap athy lqdmwthk warbe mah gbra emyh
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, along with the flocks, the herds, and the camels, into two companies.

ודחיל יעקב לחדא ועקת ליה ופליג ית עמא די עמיה וית ענא וית תורי וגמליא לתרין משירין:
wdkhyl yeqb lkhda weqth lyh wplyg yth ema dy emyh wyth ena wyth thwry wgmlya lthryn mshyryn
He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”

ואמר אם ייתי עשו למשריתא חדא וימחניה ויהי משריתא דתשתאר לשיזבא:
wamr am yythy eshw lmshrytha khda wymkhnyh wyhy mshrytha dthshthar lshyzba
Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh, who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,’

ואמר יעקב אלהה דאבא אברהם ואלהה דאבא יצחק יי די אמר לי תוב לארעך ולילדותך ואוטיב עמך:
wamr yeqb alhh daba abrhm walhh daba ytskhq yy dy amr ly thwb larek wlyldwthk wawTyb emk
I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.

זעירן זכותי מכל חסדין ומכל טבון די עבדת עם עבדך ארי יחידי עברית ית ירדנא הדין וכען הויתי לתרין משרין:
zeyrn zkwthy mkl khsdyn wmkl Tbwn dy ebdth em ebdk ary ykhydy ebryth yth yrdna hdyn wken hwythy lthryn mshryn
Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me and the mothers with the children.

שזבני כען מידא דאחי מידא דעשו ארי דחל אנא מניה דילמא ייתי וימחנני אמא על בניא:
shzbny ken myda dakhy myda deshw ary dkhl ana mnyh dylma yythy wymkhnny ama el bnya
You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”

ואת אמרת אוטבא אוטיב עמך ואשוי ית בנך סגיאין כחלא דימא די לא יתמנון מסגי:
wath amrth awTba awTyb emk washwy yth bnk sgyayn kkhla dyma dy la ythmnwn msgy
He stayed there that night, and took from that which he had with him a present for Esau, his brother:

ובת תמן בליליא ההוא ונסיב מן דאיתי בידיה תקרבתא לעשו אחוהי:
wbth thmn blylya hhwa wnsyb mn daythy bydyh thqrbtha leshw akhwhy
two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

עזי מאתן ותישיא עסרין רחלין מאתן ודכרין עסרין:
ezy mathn wthyshya esryn rkhlyn mathn wdkryn esryn
thirty milk camels and their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.
16
גמלי מנקתא ובניהון תלתין תורתא ארבעין ותורי עסרא אתנן עסרין ועירי עסרא:
gmly mnqtha wbnyhwn thlthyn thwrtha arbeyn wthwry esra athnn esryn weyry esra
He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd.”

ויהב ביד עבדוהי עדרא עדרא בלחודוהי ואמר לעבדוהי עברו קדמי ורוחא תשוון בין עדרא ובין עדרא:
wyhb byd ebdwhy edra edra blkhwdwhy wamr lebdwhy ebrw qdmy wrwkha thshwwn byn edra wbyn edra
He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’

ופקיד ית קדמאה למימר ארי יערענך עשו אחי ושאלנך למימר למן את ולאן את אזל ולמן אלין דקדמך:
wpqyd yth qdmah lmymr ary yerenk eshw akhy wshalnk lmymr lmn ath wlan ath azl wlmn alyn dqdmk
Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”

ותימר לעבדך ליעקב תקרבתא היא דמשלחא לרבוני לעשו והא אף הוא אתי בתרנא:
wthymr lebdk lyeqb thqrbtha hya dmshlkha lrbwny leshw wha ap hwa athy bthrna
He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.

ופקיד אף ית תנינא אף ית תליתאה אף ית כל דאזלין בתר עדריא למימר כפתגמא הדין תמללון עם עשו כד תשכחון יתיה:
wpqyd ap yth thnyna ap yth thlythah ap yth kl dazlyn bthr edrya lmymr kpthgma hdyn thmllwn em eshw kd thshkkhwn ythyh
You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”

ותימרון אף הא עבדך יעקב אתי בתרנא ארי אמר אנחניה לרוגזיה בתקרבתא דאזלת לקדמי ובתר כן אחזי אפוהי מאים יסב אפי:
wthymrwn ap ha ebdk yeqb athy bthrna ary amr ankhnyh lrwgzyh bthqrbtha dazlth lqdmy wbthr kn akhzy apwhy maym ysb apy
So the present passed over before him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.

ועברת תקרבתא על אפוהי והוא בת בליליא ההוא במשריתא:
webrth thqrbtha el apwhy whwa bth blylya hhwa bmshrytha
He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok.
23
וקם בליליא הוא ודבר ית תרתין נשוהי וית תרתין לחינתיה וית חד עסר בנוהי ועבר ית מעבר יובקא:
wqm blylya hwa wdbr yth thrthyn nshwhy wyth thrthyn lkhynthyh wyth khd esr bnwhy webr yth mebr ywbqa
He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.
24
ודברנון ועברנון ית נחלא ואעבר ית דיליה:
wdbrnwn webrnwn yth nkhla waebr yth dylyh
Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.
25
ואשתאר יעקב בלחודוהי ואשתדל גברא עמיה עד דסלק צפרא:
washthar yeqb blkhwdwhy washthdl gbra emyh ed dslq tspra
When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.

וחזא ארי לא יכיל ליה וקריב בפתי ירכיה וזע פתי ירכא דיעקב באשתדלותיה עמיה:
wkhza ary la ykyl lyh wqryb bpthy yrkyh wze pthy yrka dyeqb bashthdlwthyh emyh
The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”

ואמר שלחני ארי סליק צפרא ואמר לא אשלחנך אלהין ברכתני:
wamr shlkhny ary slyq tspra wamr la ashlkhnk alhyn brkthny
He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
28
ואמר ליה מה שמך ואמר יעקב:
wamr lyh mh shmk wamr yeqb
He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
29
ואמר לא יעקב יתאמר עוד שמך אלהין ישראל ארי רברבת קדם יי ועם גובריא ויכלתא:
wamr la yeqb ythamr ewd shmk alhyn yshral ary rbrbth qdm yy wem gwbrya wykltha
Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.
30
ושאל יעקב ואמר חוי כען שמך ואמר למה דנן את שאל לשמי ובריך יתיה תמן:
wshal yeqb wamr khwy ken shmk wamr lmh dnn ath shal lshmy wbryk ythyh thmn
Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

וקרא יעקב שמא דאתרא פניאל ארי חזיתי מלאכיא דיי אפין באפין ואשתזבת נפשי:
wqra yeqb shma dathra pnyal ary khzythy mlakya dyy apyn bapyn washthzbth npshy
The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
32
ודנח ליה שמשא כמא די עבר ית פנואל והוא מטלע על ירכיה:
wdnkh lyh shmsha kma dy ebr yth pnwal whwa mTle el yrkyh
Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
33
על כן לא יכלון בני ישראל ית גידא דנשיא די על פתי ירכא עד יומא הדין ארי קריב בפתי ירכא דיעקב בגידא דנשיא:
