ונטל יעקב רגלוהי ואזל לארע בני מדינחא:
wnTl yeqb rglwhy wazl lare bny mdynkha
Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the children of the east.

וחזא והא בירא בחקלא והא תמן תלתא עדרין דען רביעין עלה ארי מן בירא ההיא משקן עדריא ואבנא רבתא על פומא דבירא:
wkhza wha byra bkhqla wha thmn thltha edryn den rbyeyn elh ary mn byra hhya mshqn edrya wabna rbtha el pwma dbyra
He looked, and saw a well in the field, and saw three flocks of sheep lying there by it. For out of that well they watered the flocks. The stone on the well’s mouth was large.

ומתכנשין לתמן כל עדריא ומגנדרין ית אבנא מעל פומא דבירא ומשקן ית ענא ומתיבין ית אבנא על פומא דבירא לאתרה:
wmthknshyn lthmn kl edrya wmgndryn yth abna mel pwma dbyra wmshqn yth ena wmthybyn yth abna el pwma dbyra lathrh
There all the flocks were gathered. They rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone back on the well’s mouth in its place.

ואמר להון יעקב אחי מנן אתון ואמרו מחרן אנחנא:
wamr lhwn yeqb akhy mnn athwn wamrw mkhrn ankhna
Jacob said to them, “My relatives, where are you from?” They said, “We are from Haran.”

ואמר להון הידעתון ית לבן בר נחור ואמרו ידענן:
wamr lhwn hydethwn yth lbn br nkhwr wamrw ydenn
He said to them, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.”
6
ואמר להון השלם ליה ואמרו שלם והא רחל ברתיה אתיא עם ענא:
wamr lhwn hshlm lyh wamrw shlm wha rkhl brthyh athya em ena
He said to them, “Is it well with him?” They said, “It is well. See, Rachel, his daughter, is coming with the sheep.”

ואמר הא עוד יומא סגי לא עדן למכנש בעיר אשקו ענא ואזילו רעו:
wamr ha ewd ywma sgy la edn lmknsh beyr ashqw ena wazylw rew
He said, “Behold, it is still the middle of the day, not time to gather the livestock together. Water the sheep, and go and feed them.”

ואמרו לא נכול עד די מתכנשין כל עדריא ויגנדרון ית אבנא מעל פומא דבירא ונשקי ענא:
wamrw la nkwl ed dy mthknshyn kl edrya wygndrwn yth abna mel pwma dbyra wnshqy ena
They said, “We can’t, until all the flocks are gathered together, and they roll the stone from the well’s mouth. Then we will water the sheep.”

עד דהוא ממלל עמהון ורחל אתת עם ענא די לאבוה ארי רעיתא היא:
ed dhwa mmll emhwn wrkhl athth em ena dy labwh ary reytha hya
While he was yet speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she kept them.

והוה כד חזא יעקב ית רחל בת לבן אחוהא דאמיה וית ענא דלבן אחוהא דאמיה וקרב יעקב וגנדר ית אבנא מעל פומא דבירא ואשקי ית ענא דלבן אחוהא דאמיה:
whwh kd khza yeqb yth rkhl bth lbn akhwha damyh wyth ena dlbn akhwha damyh wqrb yeqb wgndr yth abna mel pwma dbyra washqy yth ena dlbn akhwha damyh
When Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother, Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.

ונשק יעקב לרחל וארם ית קליה ובכא:
wnshq yeqb lrkhl warm yth qlyh wbka
Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.

וחוי יעקב לרחל ארי בר אחה דאבוה הוא וארי בר רבקה הוא ורהטת וחויאת לאבוה:
wkhwy yeqb lrkhl ary br akhh dabwh hwa wary br rbqh hwa wrhTth wkhwyath labwh
Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s relative, and that he was Rebekah’s son. She ran and told her father.

והוה כד שמע לבן ית שמע יעקב בר אחתיה ורהט לקדמותיה וגפף ליה ונשיק ליה ואעליה לביתיה ואשתעי ללבן ית כל פתגמיא האלין:
whwh kd shme lbn yth shme yeqb br akhthyh wrhT lqdmwthyh wgpp lyh wnshyq lyh waelyh lbythyh washthey llbn yth kl pthgmya halyn
When Laban heard the news of Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet Jacob, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things.

ואמר ליה לבן ברם קריבי ובשרי את ויתיב עמיה ירח יומין:
wamr lyh lbn brm qryby wbshry ath wythyb emyh yrkh ywmyn
Laban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh.” Jacob stayed with him for a month.
15
ואמר לבן ליעקב המדאחי את ותפלחנני מגן חוי לי מה אגרך:
wamr lbn lyeqb hmdakhy ath wthplkhnny mgn khwy ly mh agrk
Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what will your wages be?”

וללבן תרתין בנן שום רבתא לאה ושום זערתא רחל:
wllbn thrthyn bnn shwm rbtha lah wshwm zertha rkhl
Laban had two daughters. The name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

ועיני לאה יאין ורחל הות שפירא בריוא ויאיא בחזוא:
weyny lah yayn wrkhl hwth shpyra brywa wyaya bkhzwa
Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and attractive.

ורחם יעקב ית רחל ואמר אפלחנך שבע שנין ברחל ברתך זערתא:
wrkhm yeqb yth rkhl wamr aplkhnk shbe shnyn brkhl brthk zertha
Jacob loved Rachel. He said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.”

ואמר לבן טב דאתן יתה לך מדאתן יתה לגבר אחרן תיב עמי:
wamr lbn Tb dathn ythh lk mdathn ythh lgbr akhrn thyb emy
Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you, than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me.”
20
ופלח יעקב ברחל שבע שנין והוו בעינוהי כיומין זעירין כד רחים יתה:
wplkh yeqb brkhl shbe shnyn whww beynwhy kywmyn zeyryn kd rkhym ythh
Jacob served seven years for Rachel. They seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had for her.

ואמר יעקב ללבן הב ית אתתי ארי אשלמית יומי פלחני ואעול לותה:
wamr yeqb llbn hb yth aththy ary ashlmyth ywmy plkhny waewl lwthh
Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.”

וכנש לבן ית כל אנשי אתרא ועבד משתיא:
wknsh lbn yth kl anshy athra webd mshthya
Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
23
והוה ברמשא ודבר ית לאה ברתיה ואעיל יתה לותיה ועל לותה:
whwh brmsha wdbr yth lah brthyh waeyl ythh lwthyh wel lwthh
In the evening, he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to Jacob. He went in to her.
24
ויהב לבן לה ית זלפה אמתיה ללאה ברתיה לאמהו:
wyhb lbn lh yth zlph amthyh llah brthyh lamhw
Laban gave Zilpah his servant to his daughter Leah for a servant.
25
והוה בצפרא והא היא לאה ואמר ללבן מה דא עבדת לי הלא ברחל פלחית עמך ולמא שקרת בי:
whwh btspra wha hya lah wamr llbn mh da ebdth ly hla brkhl plkhyth emk wlma shqrth by
In the morning, behold, it was Leah! He said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Didn’t I serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?”

ואמר לבן לא אתעבד כדין באתרנא למתן זערתא קדם רבתא:
wamr lbn la athebd kdyn bathrna lmthn zertha qdm rbtha
Laban said, “It is not done so in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn.
27
אשלים שבועתא דדא ונתן לך אף ית דא בפלחנא די תפלח עמי עוד שבע שנין אחרנין:
ashlym shbwetha dda wnthn lk ap yth da bplkhna dy thplkh emy ewd shbe shnyn akhrnyn
Fulfill the week of this one, and we will give you the other also for the service which you will serve with me for seven more years.”

ועבד יעקב כן ואשלים שבועתא דדא ויהב ליה ית רחל ברתיה ליה לאנתו:
webd yeqb kn washlym shbwetha dda wyhb lyh yth rkhl brthyh lyh lanthw
Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week. He gave him Rachel his daughter as wife.

ויהב לבן לרחל ברתיה ית בלהה אמתיה לה לאמהו:
wyhb lbn lrkhl brthyh yth blhh amthyh lh lamhw
Laban gave Bilhah, his servant, to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.
30
ועל אף לות רחל ורחים אף ית רחל מלאה ופלח עמיה עוד שבע שנין אחרנין:
wel ap lwth rkhl wrkhym ap yth rkhl mlah wplkh emyh ewd shbe shnyn akhrnyn
He went in also to Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him seven more years.
31
וחזא יי ארי שניאתא לאה ויהב לה עדוי ורחל עקרא:
wkhza yy ary shnyatha lah wyhb lh edwy wrkhl eqra
Yahweh saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.
32
ועדיאת לאה וילידת בר וקרת שמיה ראובן ארי אמרת ארי גלי קדם יי עלבוני ארי כען ירחמנני בעלי:
wedyath lah wylydth br wqrth shmyh rawbn ary amrth ary gly qdm yy elbwny ary ken yrkhmnny bely
Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she named him Reuben. For she said, “Because Yahweh has looked at my affliction; for now my husband will love me.”

ועדיאת עוד וילידת בר ואמרת ארי שמיע קדם יי ארי שניאתא אנא ויהב לי אף ית דין וקרת שמיה שמעון:
wedyath ewd wylydth br wamrth ary shmye qdm yy ary shnyatha ana wyhb ly ap yth dyn wqrth shmyh shmewn
She conceived again, and bore a son, and said, “Because Yahweh has heard that I am hated, he has therefore given me this son also.” She named him Simeon.

ועדיאת עוד וילידת בר ואמרת הדא זמנא יתחבר לי בעלי ארי ילידית ליה תלתא בנין על כן קרא שמיה לוי:
wedyath ewd wylydth br wamrth hda zmna ythkhbr ly bely ary ylydyth lyh thltha bnyn el kn qra shmyh lwy
She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, “Now this time my husband will be joined to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi.
35
ועדיאת עוד וילידת בר ואמרת הדא זמנא אודה קדם יי על כן קרת שמיה יהודה וקמת מלמילד:
wedyath ewd wylydth br wamrth hda zmna awdh qdm yy el kn qrth shmyh yhwdh wqmth mlmyld
She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, “This time I will praise Yahweh.” Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.
