1
ונטל יעקב רגלוהי ואזל לארע בני מדינחא:
mdynkha bny lare wazl rglwhy yeqb wnTl
Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the children of the east.
2
וחזא והא בירא בחקלא והא תמן תלתא עדרין דען רביעין עלה ארי מן בירא ההיא משקן עדריא ואבנא רבתא על פומא דבירא:
dbyra pwma el rbtha wabna edrya mshqn hhya byra mn ary elh rbyeyn den edryn thltha thmn wha bkhqla byra wha wkhza
He looked, and saw a well in the field, and saw three flocks of sheep lying there by it. For out of that well they watered the flocks. The stone on the well’s mouth was large.

ומתכנשין לתמן כל עדריא ומגנדרין ית אבנא מעל פומא דבירא ומשקן ית ענא ומתיבין ית אבנא על פומא דבירא לאתרה:
lathrh dbyra pwma el abna yth wmthybyn ena yth wmshqn dbyra pwma mel abna yth wmgndryn edrya kl lthmn wmthknshyn
There all the flocks were gathered. They rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone back on the well’s mouth in its place.

ואמר להון יעקב אחי מנן אתון ואמרו מחרן אנחנא:
ankhna mkhrn wamrw athwn mnn akhy yeqb lhwn wamr
Jacob said to them, “My relatives, where are you from?” They said, “We are from Haran.”

ואמר להון הידעתון ית לבן בר נחור ואמרו ידענן:
ydenn wamrw nkhwr br lbn yth hydethwn lhwn wamr
He said to them, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.”
6
ואמר להון השלם ליה ואמרו שלם והא רחל ברתיה אתיא עם ענא:
ena em athya brthyh rkhl wha shlm wamrw lyh hshlm lhwn wamr
He said to them, “Is it well with him?” They said, “It is well. See, Rachel, his daughter, is coming with the sheep.”

ואמר הא עוד יומא סגי לא עדן למכנש בעיר אשקו ענא ואזילו רעו:
rew wazylw ena ashqw beyr lmknsh edn la sgy ywma ewd ha wamr
He said, “Behold, it is still the middle of the day, not time to gather the livestock together. Water the sheep, and go and feed them.”

ואמרו לא נכול עד די מתכנשין כל עדריא ויגנדרון ית אבנא מעל פומא דבירא ונשקי ענא:
ena wnshqy dbyra pwma mel abna yth wygndrwn edrya kl mthknshyn dy ed nkwl la wamrw
They said, “We can’t, until all the flocks are gathered together, and they roll the stone from the well’s mouth. Then we will water the sheep.”

עד דהוא ממלל עמהון ורחל אתת עם ענא די לאבוה ארי רעיתא היא:
hya reytha ary labwh dy ena em athth wrkhl emhwn mmll dhwa ed
While he was yet speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she kept them.

והוה כד חזא יעקב ית רחל בת לבן אחוהא דאמיה וית ענא דלבן אחוהא דאמיה וקרב יעקב וגנדר ית אבנא מעל פומא דבירא ואשקי ית ענא דלבן אחוהא דאמיה:
damyh akhwha dlbn ena yth washqy dbyra pwma mel abna yth wgndr yeqb wqrb damyh akhwha dlbn ena wyth damyh akhwha lbn bth rkhl yth yeqb khza kd whwh
When Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother, Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.

ונשק יעקב לרחל וארם ית קליה ובכא:
wbka qlyh yth warm lrkhl yeqb wnshq
Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.

וחוי יעקב לרחל ארי בר אחה דאבוה הוא וארי בר רבקה הוא ורהטת וחויאת לאבוה:
labwh wkhwyath wrhTth hwa rbqh br wary hwa dabwh akhh br ary lrkhl yeqb wkhwy
Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s relative, and that he was Rebekah’s son. She ran and told her father.

והוה כד שמע לבן ית שמע יעקב בר אחתיה ורהט לקדמותיה וגפף ליה ונשיק ליה ואעליה לביתיה ואשתעי ללבן ית כל פתגמיא האלין:
halyn pthgmya kl yth llbn washthey lbythyh waelyh lyh wnshyq lyh wgpp lqdmwthyh wrhT akhthyh br yeqb shme yth lbn shme kd whwh
When Laban heard the news of Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet Jacob, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things.

ואמר ליה לבן ברם קריבי ובשרי את ויתיב עמיה ירח יומין:
ywmyn yrkh emyh wythyb ath wbshry qryby brm lbn lyh wamr
Laban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh.” Jacob stayed with him for a month.
15
ואמר לבן ליעקב המדאחי את ותפלחנני מגן חוי לי מה אגרך:
agrk mh ly khwy mgn wthplkhnny ath hmdakhy lyeqb lbn wamr
Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what will your wages be?”

וללבן תרתין בנן שום רבתא לאה ושום זערתא רחל:
rkhl zertha wshwm lah rbtha shwm bnn thrthyn wllbn
Laban had two daughters. The name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
17
ועיני לאה יאין ורחל הות שפירא בריוא ויאיא בחזוא:
bkhzwa wyaya brywa shpyra hwth wrkhl yayn lah weyny
Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and attractive.

ורחם יעקב ית רחל ואמר אפלחנך שבע שנין ברחל ברתך זערתא:
zertha brthk brkhl shnyn shbe aplkhnk wamr rkhl yth yeqb wrkhm
Jacob loved Rachel. He said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.”

ואמר לבן טב דאתן יתה לך מדאתן יתה לגבר אחרן תיב עמי:
emy thyb akhrn lgbr ythh mdathn lk ythh dathn Tb lbn wamr
Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you, than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me.”
20
ופלח יעקב ברחל שבע שנין והוו בעינוהי כיומין זעירין כד רחים יתה:
ythh rkhym kd zeyryn kywmyn beynwhy whww shnyn shbe brkhl yeqb wplkh
Jacob served seven years for Rachel. They seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had for her.

ואמר יעקב ללבן הב ית אתתי ארי אשלמית יומי פלחני ואעול לותה:
lwthh waewl plkhny ywmy ashlmyth ary aththy yth hb llbn yeqb wamr
Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.”

וכנש לבן ית כל אנשי אתרא ועבד משתיא:
mshthya webd athra anshy kl yth lbn wknsh
Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
23
והוה ברמשא ודבר ית לאה ברתיה ואעיל יתה לותיה ועל לותה:
lwthh wel lwthyh ythh waeyl brthyh lah yth wdbr brmsha whwh
In the evening, he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to Jacob. He went in to her.
24
ויהב לבן לה ית זלפה אמתיה ללאה ברתיה לאמהו:
lamhw brthyh llah amthyh zlph yth lh lbn wyhb
Laban gave Zilpah his servant to his daughter Leah for a servant.
25
והוה בצפרא והא היא לאה ואמר ללבן מה דא עבדת לי הלא ברחל פלחית עמך ולמא שקרת בי:
by shqrth wlma emk plkhyth brkhl hla ly ebdth da mh llbn wamr lah hya wha btspra whwh
In the morning, behold, it was Leah! He said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Didn’t I serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?”

ואמר לבן לא אתעבד כדין באתרנא למתן זערתא קדם רבתא:
rbtha qdm zertha lmthn bathrna kdyn athebd la lbn wamr
Laban said, “It is not done so in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn.
27
אשלים שבועתא דדא ונתן לך אף ית דא בפלחנא די תפלח עמי עוד שבע שנין אחרנין:
akhrnyn shnyn shbe ewd emy thplkh dy bplkhna da yth ap lk wnthn dda shbwetha ashlym
Fulfill the week of this one, and we will give you the other also for the service which you will serve with me for seven more years.”

ועבד יעקב כן ואשלים שבועתא דדא ויהב ליה ית רחל ברתיה ליה לאנתו:
lanthw lyh brthyh rkhl yth lyh wyhb dda shbwetha washlym kn yeqb webd
Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week. He gave him Rachel his daughter as wife.

ויהב לבן לרחל ברתיה ית בלהה אמתיה לה לאמהו:
lamhw lh amthyh blhh yth brthyh lrkhl lbn wyhb
Laban gave Bilhah, his servant, to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.
30
ועל אף לות רחל ורחים אף ית רחל מלאה ופלח עמיה עוד שבע שנין אחרנין:
akhrnyn shnyn shbe ewd emyh wplkh mlah rkhl yth ap wrkhym rkhl lwth ap wel
He went in also to Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him seven more years.
31
וחזא יי ארי שניאתא לאה ויהב לה עדוי ורחל עקרא:
eqra wrkhl edwy lh wyhb lah shnyatha ary yy wkhza
Yahweh saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.
32
ועדיאת לאה וילידת בר וקרת שמיה ראובן ארי אמרת ארי גלי קדם יי עלבוני ארי כען ירחמנני בעלי:
bely yrkhmnny ken ary elbwny yy qdm gly ary amrth ary rawbn shmyh wqrth br wylydth lah wedyath
Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she named him Reuben. For she said, “Because Yahweh has looked at my affliction; for now my husband will love me.”

ועדיאת עוד וילידת בר ואמרת ארי שמיע קדם יי ארי שניאתא אנא ויהב לי אף ית דין וקרת שמיה שמעון:
shmewn shmyh wqrth dyn yth ap ly wyhb ana shnyatha ary yy qdm shmye ary wamrth br wylydth ewd wedyath
She conceived again, and bore a son, and said, “Because Yahweh has heard that I am hated, he has therefore given me this son also.” She named him Simeon.

ועדיאת עוד וילידת בר ואמרת הדא זמנא יתחבר לי בעלי ארי ילידית ליה תלתא בנין על כן קרא שמיה לוי:
lwy shmyh qra kn el bnyn thltha lyh ylydyth ary bely ly ythkhbr zmna hda wamrth br wylydth ewd wedyath
She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, “Now this time my husband will be joined to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi.

ועדיאת עוד וילידת בר ואמרת הדא זמנא אודה קדם יי על כן קרת שמיה יהודה וקמת מלמילד:
mlmyld wqmth yhwdh shmyh qrth kn el yy qdm awdh zmna hda wamrth br wylydth ewd wedyath
She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, “This time I will praise Yahweh.” Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.
