20 verses
1
והוו חיי שרה מאה ועשרין ושבע שנין שני חיי שרה:
shrh khyy shny shnyn wshbe weshryn mah shrh khyy whww
Sarah lived one hundred twenty-seven years. This was the length of Sarah’s life.

ומיתת שרה בקרית ארבע היא חברון בארעא דכנען ואתא אברהם למספדה לשרה ולמבכה:
wlmbkh lshrh lmspdh abrhm watha dknen barea khbrwn hya arbe bqryth shrh wmythth
Sarah died in Kiriath Arba (also called Hebron), in the land of Canaan. Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.

וקם אברהם מעל אפי מיתיה ומלל עם בני חתאה למימר:
lmymr khthah bny em wmll mythyh apy mel abrhm wqm
Abraham rose up from before his dead and spoke to the children of Heth, saying,

דיר ותותב אנא עמכון הבו לי אחסנת קבורא עמכון ואקבר מיתי מן קדמי:
qdmy mn mythy waqbr emkwn qbwra akhsnth ly hbw emkwn ana wthwthb dyr
“I am a stranger and a foreigner living with you. Give me a possession of a burying-place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

ואתיבו בני חתאה ית אברהם למימר ליה:
lyh lmymr abrhm yth khthah bny wathybw
The children of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,

קבל מננא רבוננא רב קדם יי את ביננא בשפר קברנא קבר ית מיתך אנש מננא ית קבריה לא ימנע מנך מלמקבר מיתך:
mythk mlmqbr mnk ymne la qbryh yth mnna ansh mythk yth qbr qbrna bshpr bynna ath yy qdm rb rbwnna mnna qbl
“Hear us, my lord. You are a prince of God among us. Bury your dead in the best of our tombs. None of us will withhold from you his tomb. Bury your dead.”

וקם אברהם וסגיד לעמא דארעא לבני חתאה:
khthah lbny darea lema wsgyd abrhm wqm
Abraham rose up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, to the children of Heth.

ומליל עמהון למימר אם אית רעוא בנפשכון למקבר ית מיתי מן קדמי קבילו מני ובעו לי מן עפרון בר צוחר:
tswkhr br eprwn mn ly wbew mny qbylw qdmy mn mythy yth lmqbr bnpshkwn rewa ayth am lmymr emhwn wmlyl
He talked with them, saying, “If you agree that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,

ויתן לי ית מערת כפלתא די ליה די בסטר חקליה בכספא שלים יתנינה לי ביניכון לאחסנת קבורא:
qbwra lakhsnth bynykwn ly ythnynh shlym bkspa khqlyh bsTr dy lyh dy kpltha merth yth ly wythn
that he may sell me the cave of Machpelah, which he has, which is in the end of his field. For the full price let him sell it to me among you as a possession for a burial place.”

ועפרון יתב בגו בני חתאה ואתיב עפרון חתאה ית אברהם קדם בני חתאה לכל עלי תרע קרתיה למימר:
lmymr qrthyh thre ely lkl khthah bny qdm abrhm yth khthah eprwn wathyb khthah bny bgw ythb weprwn
Now Ephron was sitting in the middle of the children of Heth. Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the children of Heth, even of all who went in at the gate of his city, saying,

לא רבוני קביל מני חקלא יהבית לך ומערתא די ביה לך יהביתה לעיני בני עמי יהביתה לך קבר מיתך:
mythk qbr lk yhbythh emy bny leyny yhbythh lk byh dy wmertha lk yhbyth khqla mny qbyl rbwny la
“No, my lord, hear me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the presence of the children of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.”

וסגיד אברהם קדם עמא דארעא:
darea ema qdm abrhm wsgyd
Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land.

ומליל עם עפרון קדם עמא דארעא למימר ברם אם את עבד לי טיבו קבל מני אתן כספא דמי חקלא סב מני ואקבר ית מיתי תמן:
thmn mythy yth waqbr mny sb khqla dmy kspa athn mny qbl Tybw ly ebd ath am brm lmymr darea ema qdm eprwn em wmlyl
He spoke to Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, “But if you will, please hear me. I will give the price of the field. Take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.”

ואתיב עפרון ית אברהם למימר ליה:
lyh lmymr abrhm yth eprwn wathyb
Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,

רבוני קבל מני ארעא שויא ארבע מאה סלעין דכסף בינא ובינך מה היא וית מיתך קבר:
qbr mythk wyth hya mh wbynk byna dksp sleyn mah arbe shwya area mny qbl rbwny
“My lord, listen to me. What is a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver between me and you? Therefore bury your dead.”

וקבל אברהם מן עפרון ותקל אברהם לעפרון ית כספא דמליל קדם בני חתאה ארבע מאה סלעין דכסף מתקבל סחורא בכל מדינתא:
mdyntha bkl skhwra mthqbl dksp sleyn mah arbe khthah bny qdm dmlyl kspa yth leprwn abrhm wthql eprwn mn abrhm wqbl
Abraham listened to Ephron. Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver which he had named in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the current merchants’ standard.

וקם חקל עפרון די בכפלתא די קדם ממרא חקלא ומערתא די ביה וכל אילני די בחקלא די בכל תחומיה סחור סחור:
skhwr skhwr thkhwmyh bkl dy bkhqla dy aylny wkl byh dy wmertha khqla mmra qdm dy bkpltha dy eprwn khql wqm
So the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all of its borders, were deeded

לאברהם לזבינוהי לעיני בני חתאה בכל עלי תרע קרתיה:
qrthyh thre ely bkl khthah bny leyny lzbynwhy labrhm
to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.

ובתר כן קבר אברהם ית שרה אתתיה במערת חקל כפלתא על אפי ממרא היא חברון בארעא דכנען:
dknen barea khbrwn hya mmra apy el kpltha khql bmerth aththyh shrh yth abrhm qbr kn wbthr
After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre (that is, Hebron), in the land of Canaan.
