והוה כל ארעא לישן חד וממלל חד:

The whole earth was of one language and of one speech.

והוה במטלהון בקדמיתא ואשכחו בקעתא בארעא דבבל ויתיבו תמן:

As they traveled east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they lived there.

ואמרו גבר לחבריה הבו נרמי לבנין ונשרפנון בנורא והות להון לבנתא לאבנא וחימרא הוה להון לשיע:
wamrw gbr lkhbryh hbw nrmy lbnyn wnshrpnwn bnwra whwth lhwn lbntha labna wkhymra hwh lhwn lshye
They said to one another, “Come, let’s make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.

ואמרו הבו נבני לנא קרתא ומגדלא ורישיה מטי עד צית שמיא ונעביד לנא שום דילמא נתבדר על אפי כל ארעא:
wamrw hbw nbny lna qrtha wmgdla wryshyh mTy ed tsyth shmya wnebyd lna shwm dylma nthbdr el apy kl area
They said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let’s make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.”

ואתגלי יי לאתפרעא על עובדי קרתא ומגדלא די בנו בני אנשא:
wathgly yy lathprea el ewbdy qrtha wmgdla dy bnw bny ansha
Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.

ואמר יי הא עמא חד ולישן חד לכלהון ודין דשריו למעבד וכען לא יתמנע מנהון כל דחשיבו למעבד:
wamr yy ha ema khd wlyshn khd lklhwn wdyn dshryw lmebd wken la ythmne mnhwn kl dkhshybw lmebd
Yahweh said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do.

הבו נתגלי ונבלבל תמן לישנהון דלא ישמעון אנש לישן חבריה:
hbw nthgly wnblbl thmn lyshnhwn dla yshmewn ansh lyshn khbryh
Come, let’s go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

ובדר יי יתהון מתמן על אפי כל ארעא ומנעו למבני קרתא:
wbdr yy ythhwn mthmn el apy kl area wmnew lmbny qrtha
So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city.

על כן קרא שמה בבל ארי תמן בלבל יי לישן כל ארעא ומתמן בדרנון יי על אפי כל ארעא:
el kn qra shmh bbl ary thmn blbl yy lyshn kl area wmthmn bdrnwn yy el apy kl area
Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of all the earth. From there, Yahweh scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.

אלין תולדת שם שם בר מאה שנין ואוליד ית ארפכשד תרתין שנין בתר טופנא:

This is the history of the generations of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old when he became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood.

Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

וארפכשד חיא תלתין וחמש שנין ואוליד ית שלח:

Arpachshad lived thirty-five years and became the father of Shelah.

וחיא ארפכשד בתר דאוליד ית שלח ארבע מאה ותלת שנין ואוליד בנין ובנן:

Arpachshad lived four hundred three years after he became the father of Shelah, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

ושלח חיא תלתין שנין ואוליד ית עבר:
wshlkh khya thlthyn shnyn wawlyd yth ebr
Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber.

וחיא שלח בתר דאוליד ית עבר ארבע מאה ותלת שנין ואוליד בנין ובנן:
wkhya shlkh bthr dawlyd yth ebr arbe mah wthlth shnyn wawlyd bnyn wbnn
Shelah lived four hundred three years after he became the father of Eber, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

וחיא עבר תלתין וארבע שנין ואוליד ית פלג:
wkhya ebr thlthyn warbe shnyn wawlyd yth plg
Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg.

וחיא עבר בתר דאוליד ית פלג ארבע מאה ותלתין שנין ואוליד בנין ובנן:
wkhya ebr bthr dawlyd yth plg arbe mah wthlthyn shnyn wawlyd bnyn wbnn
Eber lived four hundred thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

וחיא פלג תלתין שנין ואוליד ית רעו:
wkhya plg thlthyn shnyn wawlyd yth rew
Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu.

וחיא פלג בתר דאוליד ית רעו מאתן ותשע שנין ואוליד בנין ובנן:
wkhya plg bthr dawlyd yth rew mathn wthshe shnyn wawlyd bnyn wbnn
Peleg lived two hundred nine years after he became the father of Reu, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

וחיא רעו תלתין ותרתין שנין ואוליד ית שרוג:
wkhya rew thlthyn wthrthyn shnyn wawlyd yth shrwg
Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug.

וחיא רעו בתר דאוליד ית שרוג מאתן ושבע שנין ואוליד בנין ובנן:
wkhya rew bthr dawlyd yth shrwg mathn wshbe shnyn wawlyd bnyn wbnn
Reu lived two hundred seven years after he became the father of Serug, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

וחיא שרוג תלתין שנין ואוליד ית נחור:
wkhya shrwg thlthyn shnyn wawlyd yth nkhwr
Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor.

וחיא שרוג בתר דאוליד ית נחור מאתן שנין ואוליד בנין ובנן:
wkhya shrwg bthr dawlyd yth nkhwr mathn shnyn wawlyd bnyn wbnn
Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

וחיא נחור עשרין ותשע שנין ואוליד ית תרח:
wkhya nkhwr eshryn wthshe shnyn wawlyd yth thrkh
Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah.
25
וחיא נחור בתר דאוליד ית תרח מאה ותשע עשר שנין ואוליד בנין ובנן:
wkhya nkhwr bthr dawlyd yth thrkh mah wthshe eshr shnyn wawlyd bnyn wbnn
Nahor lived one hundred nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

וחיא תרח שבעין שנין ואוליד ית אברם ית נחור וית הרן:
wkhya thrkh shbeyn shnyn wawlyd yth abrm yth nkhwr wyth hrn
Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

ואלין תולדת תרח תרח אוליד ית אברם ית נחור וית הרן והרן אוליד ית לוט:
walyn thwldth thrkh thrkh awlyd yth abrm yth nkhwr wyth hrn whrn awlyd yth lwT
Now this is the history of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran became the father of Lot.

ומית הרן על אפי תרח אבוהי בארעא דילדותיה באורא דכסדאי:
wmyth hrn el apy thrkh abwhy barea dyldwthyh bawra dksday
Haran died in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees, while his father Terah was still alive.

ונסיב אברם ונחור להון נשין שום אתת אברם שרי ושום אתת נחור מלכה בת הרן אבוהא דמלכה ואבוהא דיסכה:
wnsyb abrm wnkhwr lhwn nshyn shwm athth abrm shry wshwm athth nkhwr mlkh bth hrn abwha dmlkh wabwha dyskh
Abram and Nahor married wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, who was also the father of Iscah.

והות שרי עקרה לית לה ולד:

Sarai was barren. She had no child.

ודבר תרח ית אברם בריה וית לוט בר הרן בר בריה וית שרי כלתיה אתת אברם בריה ונפקו עמהון מאורא דכסדאי למיזל לארעא דכנען ואתו עד חרן ויתיבו תמן:
wdbr thrkh yth abrm bryh wyth lwT br hrn br bryh wyth shry klthyh athth abrm bryh wnpqw emhwn mawra dksday lmyzl larea dknen wathw ed khrn wythybw thmn
Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife. They went from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan. They came to Haran and lived there.

והוו יומי תרח מאתן וחמש שנין ומית תרח בחרן:

The days of Terah were two hundred five years. Terah died in Haran.
