והתנבי חגי נביא וזכריה בר עדוא נביאיא על יהודיא די ביהוד ובירושלם בשם אלה ישראל עליהון {ס}
s elyhwn yshral alh bshm wbyrwshlm byhwd dy yhwdya el nbyaya edwa br wzkryh nbya khgy whthnby
Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem. They prophesied to them in the name of the God of Israel.

באדין קמו זרבבל בר שאלתיאל וישוע בר יוצדק ושריו למבנא בית אלהא די בירושלם ועמהון נביאיא די אלהא מסעדין להון {פ}
p lhwn msedyn alha dy nbyaya wemhwn byrwshlm dy alha byth lmbna wshryw ywtsdq br wyshwe shalthyal br zrbbl qmw badyn
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak rose up and began to build God’s house which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them.

בה זמנא אתה עליהון תתני פחת עבר נהרה ושתר בוזני וכנותהון וכן אמרין להם מן שם לכם טעם ביתא דנה לבנא ואשרנא דנה לשכללה
lshkllh dnh washrna lbna dnh bytha Tem lkm shm mn lhm amryn wkn wknwthhwn bwzny wshthr nhrh ebr pkhth ththny elyhwn athh zmna bh
At the same time Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, came to them, with Shetharbozenai and their companions, and asked them, “Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this wall?”

אדין כנמא אמרנא להם מן אנון שמהת גבריא די דנה בנינא בנין
bnyn bnyna dnh dy gbrya shmhth anwn mn lhm amrna knma adyn
They also asked for the names of the men who were making this building.

ועין אלההם הות על שבי יהודיא ולא בטלו המו עד טעמא לדריוש יהך ואדין יתיבון נשתונא על דנה {פ}
p dnh el nshthwna ythybwn wadyn yhk ldrywsh Tema ed hmw bTlw wla yhwdya shby el hwth alhhm weyn
But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they didn’t make them cease until the matter should come to Darius, and an answer should be returned by letter concerning it.

פרשגן אגרתא די שלח תתני ׀ פחת עבר נהרה ושתר בוזני וכנותה אפרסכיא די בעבר נהרה על דריוש מלכא
mlka drywsh el nhrh bebr dy aprskya wknwthh bwzny wshthr nhrh ebr pkhth ththny shlkh dy agrtha prshgn
The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king follows.

פתגמא שלחו עלוהי וכדנה כתיב בגוה לדריוש מלכא שלמא כלא {ס}
s kla shlma mlka ldrywsh bgwh kthyb wkdnh elwhy shlkhw pthgma
They sent a letter to him, in which was written: To Darius the king, all peace.

ידיע ׀ להוא למלכא די אזלנא ליהוד מדינתא לבית אלהא רבא והוא מתבנא אבן גלל ואע מתשם בכתליא ועבידתא דך אספרנא מתעבדא ומצלח בידהם
bydhm wmtslkh mthebda asprna dk webydtha bkthlya mthshm wae gll abn mthbna whwa rba alha lbyth mdyntha lyhwd azlna dy lmlka lhwa ydye
Be it known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is being built with great stones and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on with diligence and prospers in their hands.

אדין שאלנא לשביא אלך כנמא אמרנא להם מן שם לכם טעם ביתא דנה למבניה ואשרנא דנה לשכללה
lshkllh dnh washrna lmbnyh dnh bytha Tem lkm shm mn lhm amrna knma alk lshbya shalna adyn
Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?”

ואף שמהתהם שאלנא להם להודעותך די נכתב שם גבריא די בראשיהם {פ}
p brashyhm dy gbrya shm nkthb dy lhwdewthk lhm shalna shmhthhm wap
We asked them their names also, to inform you that we might write the names of the men who were at their head.

וכנמא פתגמא התיבונא לממר אנחנא המו עבדוהי די אלה שמיא וארעא ובנין ביתא די הוא בנה מקדמת דנה שנין שגיאן ומלך לישראל רב בנהי ושכללה
wshkllh bnhy rb lyshral wmlk shgyan shnyn dnh mqdmth bnh hwa dy bytha wbnyn warea shmya alh dy ebdwhy hmw ankhna lmmr hthybwna pthgma wknma
Thus they returned us answer, saying, “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and are building the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished.

להן מן די הרגזו אבהתנא לאלה שמיא יהב המו ביד נבוכדנצר מלך בבל כסדאה וביתה דנה סתרה ועמה הגלי לבבל {פ}

But after our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried the people away into Babylon.

ברם בשנת חדה לכורש מלכא די בבל כורש מלכא שם טעם בית אלהא דנה לבנא
lbna dnh alha byth Tem shm mlka kwrsh bbl dy mlka lkwrsh khdh bshnth brm
But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God.

ואף מאניא די בית אלהא די דהבה וכספא די נבוכדנצר הנפק מן היכלא די בירושלם והיבל המו להיכלא די בבל הנפק המו כורש מלכא מן היכלא די בבל ויהיבו לששבצר שמה די פחה שמה
shmh pkhh dy shmh lshshbtsr wyhybw bbl dy hykla mn mlka kwrsh hmw hnpq bbl dy lhykla hmw whybl byrwshlm dy hykla mn hnpq nbwkdntsr dy wkspa dhbh dy alha byth dy manya wap
The gold and silver vessels of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king also took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor.

ואמר לה ׀ אל מאניא שא אזל אחת המו בהיכלא די בירושלם ובית אלהא יתבנא על אתרה {פ}
p athrh el ythbna alha wbyth byrwshlm dy bhykla hmw akhth azl sha manya al lh wamr
He said to him, ‘Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let God’s house be built in its place.’

אדין ששבצר דך אתא יהב אשיא די בית אלהא די בירושלם ומן אדין ועד כען מתבנא ולא שלם
shlm wla mthbna ken wed adyn wmn byrwshlm dy alha byth dy ashya yhb atha dk shshbtsr adyn
Then the same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of God’s house which is in Jerusalem. Since that time even until now it has been being built, and yet it is not completed.

וכען הן על מלכא טב יתבקר בבית גנזיא די מלכא תמה די בבבל הן איתי די מן כורש מלכא שים טעם למבנא בית אלהא דך בירושלם ורעות מלכא על דנה ישלח עלינא {פ}
p elyna yshlkh dnh el mlka wrewth byrwshlm dk alha byth lmbna Tem shym mlka kwrsh mn dy aythy hn bbbl dy thmh mlka dy gnzya bbyth ythbqr Tb mlka el hn wken
Now therefore, if it seems good to the king, let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it is so that a decree was made by Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”
