והתנבי חגי נביא וזכריה בר עדוא נביאיא על יהודיא די ביהוד ובירושלם בשם אלה ישראל עליהון {ס}

Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem. They prophesied to them in the name of the God of Israel.

באדין קמו זרבבל בר שאלתיאל וישוע בר יוצדק ושריו למבנא בית אלהא די בירושלם ועמהון נביאיא די אלהא מסעדין להון {פ}

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak rose up and began to build God’s house which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them.

בה זמנא אתה עליהון תתני פחת עבר נהרה ושתר בוזני וכנותהון וכן אמרין להם מן שם לכם טעם ביתא דנה לבנא ואשרנא דנה לשכללה

At the same time Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, came to them, with Shetharbozenai and their companions, and asked them, “Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this wall?”

אדין כנמא אמרנא להם מן אנון שמהת גבריא די דנה בנינא בנין
adyn knma amrna lhm mn anwn shmhth gbrya dy dnh bnyna bnyn
They also asked for the names of the men who were making this building.

ועין אלההם הות על שבי יהודיא ולא בטלו המו עד טעמא לדריוש יהך ואדין יתיבון נשתונא על דנה {פ}
weyn alhhm hwth el shby yhwdya wla bTlw hmw ed Tema ldrywsh yhk wadyn ythybwn nshthwna el dnh p
But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they didn’t make them cease until the matter should come to Darius, and an answer should be returned by letter concerning it.

פרשגן אגרתא די שלח תתני ׀ פחת עבר נהרה ושתר בוזני וכנותה אפרסכיא די בעבר נהרה על דריוש מלכא

The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king follows.

פתגמא שלחו עלוהי וכדנה כתיב בגוה לדריוש מלכא שלמא כלא {ס}

They sent a letter to him, in which was written: To Darius the king, all peace.

ידיע ׀ להוא למלכא די אזלנא ליהוד מדינתא לבית אלהא רבא והוא מתבנא אבן גלל ואע מתשם בכתליא ועבידתא דך אספרנא מתעבדא ומצלח בידהם
ydye lhwa lmlka dy azlna lyhwd mdyntha lbyth alha rba whwa mthbna abn gll wae mthshm bkthlya webydtha dk asprna mthebda wmtslkh bydhm
Be it known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is being built with great stones and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on with diligence and prospers in their hands.

אדין שאלנא לשביא אלך כנמא אמרנא להם מן שם לכם טעם ביתא דנה למבניה ואשרנא דנה לשכללה

Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?”

ואף שמהתהם שאלנא להם להודעותך די נכתב שם גבריא די בראשיהם {פ}
wap shmhthhm shalna lhm lhwdewthk dy nkthb shm gbrya dy brashyhm p
We asked them their names also, to inform you that we might write the names of the men who were at their head.

וכנמא פתגמא התיבונא לממר אנחנא המו עבדוהי די אלה שמיא וארעא ובנין ביתא די הוא בנה מקדמת דנה שנין שגיאן ומלך לישראל רב בנהי ושכללה
wknma pthgma hthybwna lmmr ankhna hmw ebdwhy dy alh shmya warea wbnyn bytha dy hwa bnh mqdmth dnh shnyn shgyan wmlk lyshral rb bnhy wshkllh
Thus they returned us answer, saying, “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and are building the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished.

להן מן די הרגזו אבהתנא לאלה שמיא יהב המו ביד נבוכדנצר מלך בבל כסדאה וביתה דנה סתרה ועמה הגלי לבבל {פ}

But after our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried the people away into Babylon.

ברם בשנת חדה לכורש מלכא די בבל כורש מלכא שם טעם בית אלהא דנה לבנא

But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God.

ואף מאניא די בית אלהא די דהבה וכספא די נבוכדנצר הנפק מן היכלא די בירושלם והיבל המו להיכלא די בבל הנפק המו כורש מלכא מן היכלא די בבל ויהיבו לששבצר שמה די פחה שמה
wap manya dy byth alha dy dhbh wkspa dy nbwkdntsr hnpq mn hykla dy byrwshlm whybl hmw lhykla dy bbl hnpq hmw kwrsh mlka mn hykla dy bbl wyhybw lshshbtsr shmh dy pkhh shmh
The gold and silver vessels of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king also took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor.

ואמר לה ׀ אל מאניא שא אזל אחת המו בהיכלא די בירושלם ובית אלהא יתבנא על אתרה {פ}
wamr lh al manya sha azl akhth hmw bhykla dy byrwshlm wbyth alha ythbna el athrh p
He said to him, ‘Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let God’s house be built in its place.’

אדין ששבצר דך אתא יהב אשיא די בית אלהא די בירושלם ומן אדין ועד כען מתבנא ולא שלם
adyn shshbtsr dk atha yhb ashya dy byth alha dy byrwshlm wmn adyn wed ken mthbna wla shlm
Then the same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of God’s house which is in Jerusalem. Since that time even until now it has been being built, and yet it is not completed.

וכען הן על מלכא טב יתבקר בבית גנזיא די מלכא תמה די בבבל הן איתי די מן כורש מלכא שים טעם למבנא בית אלהא דך בירושלם ורעות מלכא על דנה ישלח עלינא {פ}
wken hn el mlka Tb ythbqr bbyth gnzya dy mlka thmh dy bbbl hn aythy dy mn kwrsh mlka shym Tem lmbna byth alha dk byrwshlm wrewth mlka el dnh yshlkh elyna p
Now therefore, if it seems good to the king, let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it is so that a decree was made by Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”
