33 verses
1
והוה פתגם נבואה מן קדם יי עמי למימר:
lmymr emy yy qdm mn nbwah pthgm whwh
Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
2
בר אדם אתנבי לבני עמך ותימר להון ארעא ארי איתי עלה דקטלין בחרבא וידברון עמא דארעא גברא חד מביניהון וימנון יתיה להון לאזהרא:
lazhra lhwn ythyh wymnwn mbynyhwn khd gbra darea ema wydbrwn bkhrba dqTlyn elh aythy ary area lhwn wthymr emk lbny athnby adm br
“Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and tell them, ‘When I bring the sword on a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman,

ויחזי ית דקטלין בחרבא אתין על ארעא ויתקע בשופרא ויזהר ית עמא:
ema yth wyzhr bshwpra wythqe area el athyn bkhrba dqTlyn yth wykhzy
if, when he sees the sword come on the land, he blows the trumpet and warns the people,

וישמע די שמע ית קל שופרא ולא אזדהר ואתו קטולי חרבא ודברוהי חובת קטוליה ברישיה יהי:
yhy bryshyh qTwlyh khwbth wdbrwhy khrba qTwly wathw azdhr wla shwpra ql yth shme dy wyshme
then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and doesn’t heed the warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head.

ית קל שופריה שמע ולא אזדהר חובת קטולי ביה תהי והוא אזדהר נפשיה שיזיב:
shyzyb npshyh azdhr whwa thhy byh qTwly khwbth azdhr wla shme shwpryh ql yth
He heard the sound of the trumpet and didn’t take warning. His blood will be on him; whereas if he had heeded the warning, he would have delivered his soul.

ומזהרנא ארי יחזי ית דקטלין בחרבא אתן ולא תקע בשופרא ועמא לא אזדהר ואתו קטולי חרבא ודברו מנהון נפשא הוא בחוביה אידכר ודמה מיד אזהרנא אתבע:
athbe azhrna myd wdmh aydkr bkhwbyh hwa npsha mnhwn wdbrw khrba qTwly wathw azdhr la wema bshwpra thqe wla athn bkhrba dqTlyn yth ykhzy ary wmzhrna
But if the watchman sees the sword come and doesn’t blow the trumpet, and the people aren’t warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’

ואת בר אדם מליף מניתך לבית ישראל ותקביל ממימרי פתגם ותזהר יתהון מלמחטי קדמי:
qdmy mlmkhTy ythhwn wthzhr pthgm mmymry wthqbyl yshral lbyth mnythk mlyp adm br wath
“So you, son of man, I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel. Therefore hear the word from my mouth, and give them warnings from me.

בדאמרית לרשיעא רשיעא ממת תמות ולא מלילתא לאזהרה רשיעא מאורחיה הוא רשיעא בחובה ימות ודמיה מן ידך אתבע:
athbe ydk mn wdmyh ymwth bkhwbh rshyea hwa mawrkhyh rshyea lazhrh mlyltha wla thmwth mmth rshyea lrshyea bdamryth
When I tell the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you don’t speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand.

ואת ארי אזהרת רשיעא מאורחה למיתב מנה ולא תב מאורחיה הוא בחוביה ימות ואת נפשך שיזיבתא:
shyzybtha npshk wath ymwth bkhwbyh hwa mawrkhyh thb wla mnh lmythb mawrkhh rshyea azhrth ary wath
Nevertheless, if you warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he doesn’t turn from his way; he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.

ואת בר אדם אמר לבית ישראל כן אמרתון למימר ארי חובנא וחטאנא עלנא מתיהבין ובהון אנחנא מתמסין ואיכדין נחי:
nkhy waykdyn mthmsyn ankhna wbhwn mthyhbyn elna wkhTana khwbna ary lmymr amrthwn kn yshral lbyth amr adm br wath
“You, son of man, tell the house of Israel: ‘You say this, “Our transgressions and our sins are on us, and we pine away in them. How then can we live?”’

אמר להון קים אנא אמר יי אלהים אם רעינא במית רשיעא אלהין כד יתוב רשיעא מאורחיה ויחי תובו מאורחתכון בישתא ולמה תמותון בית ישראל:
yshral byth thmwthwn wlmh byshtha mawrkhthkwn thwbw wykhy mawrkhyh rshyea ythwb kd alhyn rshyea bmyth reyna am alhym yy amr ana qym lhwn amr
Tell them, ‘“As I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why will you die, house of Israel?”’

ואת בר אדם אמר לבני עמך זכות זכאה לא תשיזביניה ביומא דחובתה וחובת חיבא לא יתקל בה ביומא דיתוב מחוביה וצדיקא לא יכול לאתקימא ביה ביומא דחובתיה:
dkhwbthyh bywma byh lathqyma ykwl la wtsdyqa mkhwbyh dythwb bywma bh ythql la khyba wkhwbth dkhwbthh bywma thshyzbynyh la zkah zkwth emk lbny amr adm br wath
“You, son of man, tell the children of your people, ‘The righteousness of the righteous will not deliver him in the day of his disobedience. And as for the wickedness of the wicked, he will not fall by it in the day that he turns from his wickedness; neither will he who is righteous be able to live by it in the day that he sins.

בדאמרית לזכאה מיחא יחי והוא יתרחיץ על זכותיה ועבד שקר כל זכותיה לא ידכרן ובשקריה דעבד ביה ימות:
ymwth byh debd wbshqryh ydkrn la zkwthyh kl shqr webd zkwthyh el ythrkhyts whwa ykhy mykha lzkah bdamryth
When I tell the righteous that he will surely live, if he trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but he will die in his iniquity that he has committed.

ובדאמרית לרשיעא ממת תמות ויתוב מחובוהי ויעביד דין דקשוט וזכו:
wzkw dqshwT dyn wyebyd mkhwbwhy wythwb thmwth mmth lrshyea wbdamryth
Again, when I say to the wicked, “You will surely die,” if he turns from his sin and does that which is lawful and right,

משכונא יתיב רשיעא גזילא שלים בגזירת חייא הליך בדיל דלא למעבד שקר מיחא יחי ולא ימות:
ymwth wla ykhy mykha shqr lmebd dla bdyl hlyk khyya bgzyrth shlym gzyla rshyea ythyb mshkwna
if the wicked restore the pledge, give again that which he had taken by robbery, walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity, he will surely live. He will not die.

כל חובוהי דחב לא ידכרן ליה דין דקשוט וזכו עבד מיחא יחי:
ykhy mykha ebd wzkw dqshwT dyn lyh ydkrn la dkhb khwbwhy kl
None of his sins that he has committed will be remembered against him. He has done that which is lawful and right. He will surely live.

ויימרון בני עמך לא מפרשן לנא אורחת טובא דיי ואינון אורחתהון דילהון לא תקנן:
thqnn la dylhwn awrkhthhwn waynwn dyy Twba awrkhth lna mprshn la emk bny wyymrwn
“‘Yet the children of your people say, “The way of the Lord is not fair;” but as for them, their way is not fair.
18
כד יתוב זכאה מזכותה ויעביד שקר וימות בהון:
bhwn wymwth shqr wyebyd mzkwthh zkah ythwb kd
When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he will even die therein.
19
וכד יתוב רשיעא מחובוהי ויעביד דין דקשוט וזכו עליהון הוא יתקים:
ythqym hwa elyhwn wzkw dqshwT dyn wyebyd mkhwbwhy rshyea ythwb wkd
When the wicked turns from his wickedness and does that which is lawful and right, he will live by it.
20
ואמרתון לא מפרשן לנא אורחת טובא דיי אנש כאורחה אתפרע מנכון בית ישראל:
yshral byth mnkwn athpre kawrkhh ansh dyy Twba awrkhth lna mprshn la wamrthwn
Yet you say, “The way of the Lord is not fair.” House of Israel, I will judge every one of you after his ways.’”

והוה בתרתי עסרי שנין בעשיראה בחמשא לירחא לגלותנא אתא לותי משיזבא מירושלם למימר אתרעת קרתא:
qrtha athreth lmymr myrwshlm mshyzba lwthy atha lglwthna lyrkha bkhmsha beshyrah shnyn esry bthrthy whwh
In the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, one who had escaped out of Jerusalem came to me, saying, “The city has been defeated!”

ונבואה מן קדם יי הות עמי ברמשא קדם מיתי משיזבא ופתח ית פומי עד מיתי לותי בצפרא ואפתח פומי ולא שתקית עוד:
ewd shthqyth wla pwmy wapthkh btspra lwthy mythy ed pwmy yth wpthkh mshyzba mythy qdm brmsha emy hwth yy qdm mn wnbwah
Now Yahweh’s hand had been on me in the evening, before he who had escaped came; and he had opened my mouth until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.

והוה פתגם נבואה מן קדם יי עמי למימר:
lmymr emy yy qdm mn nbwah pthgm whwh
Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
24
בר אדם יתבי חורבתא האילן על ארעא דישראל אמרין למימר חד הוה אברהם בעלמא וירית ית ארעא ואנחנא סגיאין לנא יהיבא ארעא למירתה:
lmyrthh area yhyba lna sgyayn wankhna area yth wyryth belma abrhm hwh khd lmymr amryn dyshral area el hayln khwrbtha ythby adm br
“Son of man, those who inhabit the waste places in the land of Israel speak, saying, ‘Abraham was one, and he inherited the land; but we are many. The land is given us for inheritance.’
25
בכן אמר להון כדנן אמר יי אלהים על דם זכאי אתון אכלין ועיניכון אתון זקפין לפולחן טעותכון ודם זכאי אתון אשדין וארעא אתון מדמן למירתה:
lmyrthh mdmn athwn warea ashdyn athwn zkay wdm Tewthkwn lpwlkhn zqpyn athwn weynykwn aklyn athwn zkay dm el alhym yy amr kdnn lhwn amr bkn
Therefore tell them, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “You eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood. So should you possess the land?
26
ואתעתדתון על תוקפיכון עבדתון תועיבא וגבר ית אתת חבריה סאיבתון וארעא אתון מדמן למירתה:
lmyrthh mdmn athwn warea saybthwn khbryh athth yth wgbr thweyba ebdthwn thwqpykwn el wathethdthwn
You stand on your sword, you work abomination, and every one of you defiles his neighbor’s wife. So should you possess the land?”’
27
כדנן תימר להון כדנן אמר יי אלהים קים אנא אם לא די בחרבא בחרבא יתקטלון ודי על אפי ברא לחיתא מסרתיה לשיציותהון ודי במצדתא ובמערתא במותא ימותון:
ymwthwn bmwtha wbmertha bmtsdtha wdy lshytsywthhwn msrthyh lkhytha bra apy el wdy ythqTlwn bkhrba bkhrba dy la am ana qym alhym yy amr kdnn lhwn thymr kdnn
“You shall tell them, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “As I live, surely those who are in the waste places will fall by the sword. I will give whoever is in the open field to the animals to be devoured, and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves will die of the pestilence.
28
ואתן ית ארעא לצדו ואשתממו ויבטל יקר תוקפה ויצדון טורי ישראל מבלי עדי:
edy mbly yshral Twry wytsdwn thwqph yqr wybTl washthmmw ltsdw area yth wathn
I will make the land a desolation and an astonishment. The pride of her power will cease. The mountains of Israel will be desolate, so that no one will pass through.
29
וידעון ארי אנא יי בדאתן ית ארעא לצדו ואשתממו על כל תועבתהון דעבדו:
debdw thwebthhwn kl el washthmmw ltsdw area yth bdathn yy ana ary wydewn
Then they will know that I am Yahweh, when I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment because of all their abominations which they have committed.”’
30
ואת בר אדם בני עמך דדנן בך בסטר כתליא ובתרעי בתיא וימליל חד עם חד גבר ית אחוהי למימר אתו דנפק מן קדם יי:
yy qdm mn dnpq athw lmymr akhwhy yth gbr khd em khd wymlyl bthya wbthrey kthlya bsTr bk ddnn emk bny adm br wath
“As for you, son of man, the children of your people talk about you by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak to one another, everyone to his brother, saying, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes out from Yahweh.’
31
וייתון עלך כמיתי גברין תלמידין ויתיבון קדמך עמי ושמעין ית פתגמך ויתהון לא יעבדון ארי תולעבא בפומהון אינון עבדין בתר ממון אונסיהון לבהון טעי:
Tey lbhwn awnsyhwn mmwn bthr ebdyn aynwn bpwmhwn thwleba ary yebdwn la wythhwn pthgmk yth wshmeyn emy qdmk wythybwn thlmydyn gbryn kmythy elk wyythwn
They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but don’t do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain.
32
והא את להון כזמר אבובין דבסים קליה ומוטב לנגנא ושמעין ית פתגמך ולמעבדהון לית אינון צבן:
tsbn aynwn lyth wlmebdhwn pthgmk yth wshmeyn lngna wmwTb qlyh dbsym abwbyn kzmr lhwn ath wha
Behold, you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they don’t do them.
