Yahweh’s word came to me again, saying,

ܠܡܢܐ ܡܡܬܠܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܡܬܠܐ ܗܢܐ ܒܐܪܥܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܐܝܠ ܘܐܡ̇ܪܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܐܒ̈ܗܐ ܐܟܠܘ ܒܣܪ̈ܐ ܘܫܢ̈ܐ ܕܒܢܝ̈ܐ ܩܗ̈ܝܢ
lmn' mmthlyn 'nthwn mthl' hn' b're' d'ysr'yl w'mryn 'nthwn 'bh' 'klw bsr' wshn' dbny' qhyn
“What do you mean, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?

ܚܝ ܐܢܐ ܐܡ̇ܪ ܡܪܐ ܡܪ̈ܘܬܐ ܐܢ ܢܗܘܐ ܬܘܒ ܕܡܡܬܠ ܡܬܠܐ ܗܢܐ ܒܐܝܣܪܝܠ
khy 'n' 'mr mr' mrwth' 'n nhw' thwb dmmthl mthl' hn' b'ysryl
“As I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “you shall not use this proverb any more in Israel.

ܡܛܠ ܕܟܠܗܝܢ ܢܦܫ̈ܬܐ ܕܝܠܝ ܐܢܝ̈ܢ ܢܦܫܐ ܕܐܒܐ ܘܢܦܫܐ ܕܒܪܐ ܕܝܠܝ ܐܢܝ̈ܢ ܢܦܫܐ ܕܚܛܝܐ ܗܝ ܬܡܘܬ
mTl dklhyn npshth' dyly 'nyn npsh' d'b' wnpsh' dbr' dyly 'nyn npsh' dkhTy' hy thmwth
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine. The soul who sins, he shall die.

ܘܓܒܪܐ ܐܢ ܢܗܘܐ ܙܕܝܩ ܘܢܥܒܕ ܕܝܢܐ ܘܙܕܝܩܘܬܐ

“But if a man is just, and does that which is lawful and right,

ܘܥܠ ܛܘܪ̈ܐ ܠܐ ܐܟܠ ܘܠܐ ܐܪܝܡ ܥܝ̈ܢܘܗܝ ܠܦܬܟܪ̈ܐ ܘܠܕܚ̈ܠܬܐ ܕܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܠܐܢܬܬ ܚܒܪܗ ܠܐ ܛܢܦ ܘܠܐܢܬܬܐ ܒܟܦܣܗ̇ ܠܐ ܐܬܩܪܒ
wel Twr' l' 'kl wl' 'rym eynwhy lpthkr' wldkhlth' dbny 'ysryl wl'nthth khbrh l' Tnp wl'nthth' bkpsh l' 'thqrb
and has not eaten on the mountains, hasn’t lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hasn’t defiled his neighbor’s wife, hasn’t come near a woman in her impurity,

ܘܠܐܢܫ ܠܐ ܛܠܡ ܘܠܐܢܫ ܠܐ ܬܟ ܘܦܢܝ ܡܫܟܢܐ ܕܢܣܒ ܘܝܗܒ ܠܚܡܗ ܠܟܦܢܐ ܘܠܥܪܛܠܝܐ ܐܠܒܫ ܬܟܣܝܬܐ
wl'nsh l' Tlm wl'nsh l' thk wpny mshkn' dnsb wyhb lkhmh lkpn' wlerTly' 'lbsh thksyth'
and has not wronged any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has taken nothing by robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

ܘܒܪܒܝܬܐ ܠܐ ܐܘܙܦ ܘܒܩܨܨܐ ܠܐ ܝܗܒ ܘܡܢ ܥܘ̣ܠܐ ܐܗܦܟ ܐܝܕܗ ܘܕܢ ܕܝܢܐ ܕܩܘܫܬܐ ܒܝܬ ܓܒܪܐ ܠܚܒܪܗ
wbrbyth' l' 'wzp wbqtsts' l' yhb wmn ewl' 'hpk 'ydh wdn dyn' dqwshth' byth gbr' lkhbrh
he who hasn’t lent to them with interest, hasn’t taken any increase from them, who has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true justice between man and man,

ܘܒܦܘܩ̈ܕܢܝ ܗܠܟ ܘܕܝܢ̈ܝ ܢܛܪ ܘܥܒܕ ܩܘܫܬܐ ܡ̇ܢ ܕܗܟܢܐ ܥܒܕ ܙܕܝܩܐ ܗܘ ܘܡܚܐ ܢܚܐ ܐܡ̇ܪ ܡܪܐ ܡܪ̈ܘܬܐ
wbpwqdny hlk wdyny nTr webd qwshth' mn dhkn' ebd zdyq' hw wmkh' nkh' 'mr mr' mrwth'
has walked in my statutes, and has kept my ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live,” says the Lord Yahweh.

ܘܐܢ ܢܘܠܕ ܒܪܐ ܥܘ̇ܠܐ ܐܫ̇ܕ ܕܡܐ ܘܢܥܒܕ ܚܕܐ ܡܢ ܗܠܝܢ

“If he fathers a son who is a robber who sheds blood, and who does any one of these things,

ܘܢܐܟܘܠ ܥܠ ܛܘܪ̈ܐ ܘܢܛܢܦ ܐܢܬܬ ܚܒܪܗ

or who does not do any of those things but has eaten at the mountain shrines and defiled his neighbor’s wife,

ܘܢܛܠܘܡ ܠܡܣܟܢܐ ܘܠܒܝ̇ܫܐ ܘܢܬܘܟ ܠܚܒܪܗ ܘܠܐ ܢܦܢܐ ܡܫܟܢܐ ܠܡܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܠܦܬܟܪ̈ܐ ܢܪܝܡ ܥܝܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܢܥܒܕ ܛܢܦܘܬܐ
wnTlwm lmskn' wlbysh' wnthwk lkhbrh wl' npn' mshkn' lmrwhy wlpthkr' nrym eynwhy wnebd Tnpwth'
has wronged the poor and needy, has taken by robbery, has not restored the pledge, and has lifted up his eyes to the idols, has committed abomination,

ܘܒܪܒܝܬܐ ܢܘܙܦ ܘܒܩܨܨܐ ܢܣܒ ܕܠܡܐ ܚܝ̇ܐ ܠܐ ܢܚܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܗܠܝܢ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܒܝܫ̈ܬܐ ܥܒܕ ܐܠܐ ܡܡܬ ܢܡܘܬ ܘܕܡܗ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܢܗܘܐ
wbrbyth' nwzp wbqtsts' nsb dlm' khy' l' nkh' mTl dhlyn klhyn byshth' ebd 'l' mmth nmwth wdmh elwhy nhw'
has lent with interest, and has taken increase from the poor, shall he then live? He shall not live. He has done all these abominations. He shall surely die. His blood will be on him.

ܘܐܢ ܢܘܠܕ ܒܪܐ ܘܢܚܙܐ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܚ̈ܛܗܐ ܕܥܒܕ ܐܒܘܗܝ ܘܠܐ ܢܥܒܕ ܐܟܘܬܗܘܢ

“Now, behold, if he fathers a son who sees all his father’s sins which he has done, and fears, and doesn’t do likewise,

ܘܥܠ ܛܘܪ̈ܐ ܠܐ ܢܐܟܘܠ ܘܠܐ ܢܪܝܡ ܥܝܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܠܦܬܟܪ̈ܐ ܕܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܠܐܢܬܬ ܚܒܪܗ ܠܐ ܢܛܢܦ
wel Twr' l' n'kwl wl' nrym eynwhy lpthkr' dbny 'ysryl wl'nthth khbrh l' nTnp
who hasn’t eaten on the mountains, hasn’t lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hasn’t defiled his neighbor’s wife,

ܘܠܐܢܫ ܠܐ ܢܛܠܘܡ ܘܡܫܟܢܐ ܕܐܢܫ ܠܐ ܢܫܩܘܠ ܘܬܘܟܐ ܠܐ ܢܬܘܟ ܘܠܚܡܗ ܢܬܠ ܠܟܦܢܐ ܘܠܥܪܛܠܝܐ ܢܠܒܫ

hasn’t wronged any, hasn’t taken anything to pledge, hasn’t taken by robbery, but has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

ܘܡܢ ܡܣܟܢܐ ܠܐ ܢܗܦܟ ܐܝܕܗ ܘܪܒܝܬܐ ܠܐ ܢܫܩܘܠ ܘܝܬܝܪܐ ܠܐ ܢܣܒ ܘܕ̈ܝܢܝ ܢܥܒܕ ܘܒܦܘܩ̈ܕܢܝ ܢܗܠܟ ܠܐ ܢܡܘܬ ܒܥܘ̣ܠܗ ܕܐܒܘܗܝ ܐܠܐ ܡܚܐ ܢܚܐ
wmn mskn' l' nhpk 'ydh wrbyth' l' nshqwl wythyr' l' nsb wdyny nebd wbpwqdny nhlk l' nmwth bewlh d'bwhy 'l' mkh' nkh'
who has withdrawn his hand from the poor, who hasn’t received interest or increase, has executed my ordinances, has walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father. He shall surely live.

ܐܒܘܗܝ ܕܝܢ ܥܠ ܕܛܠܡ ܛܠܘܡܝܐ ܘܬܟ ܬܘܟܐ ܠܐܚܘܗܝ ܘܡܕܡ ܕܫܦܝܪ ܠܐ ܥܒܕ ܒܥܡܗ ܡܝܬ ܒܚ̈ܛܗܘܗܝ
'bwhy dyn el dTlm Tlwmy' wthk thwk' l'khwhy wmdm dshpyr l' ebd bemh myth bkhThwhy
As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he will die in his iniquity.

ܘܐܢ ܐܡ̇ܪܝܢ ܐܝܟܘ ܠܐ ܡܬܦܪܥ ܒܪܐ ܚ̈ܛܗܐ ܕܐܒܘܗܝ ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܥܒܕ ܒܪܐ ܕܝܢܐ ܘܙܕܝܩܘܬܐ ܘܢܛܪ ܟܘܠܗܘܢ ܦܘܩ̈ܕܢܝ. ܡܚܐ ܢܚܐ.
w'n 'mryn 'ykw l' mthpre br' khTh' d'bwhy 'mr lhwn mTl debd br' dyn' wzdyqwth' wnTr kwlhwn pwqdny mkh' nkh'
“Yet you say, ‘Why doesn’t the son bear the iniquity of the father?’ When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes, and has done them, he will surely live.

ܢܦܫܐ ܕܚ̇ܛܝܐ ܗܝ ܬܡܘܬ ܠܐ ܢܬܦܪܥ ܒܪܐ ܚ̈ܛܗܐ ܕܐܒܘܗܝ ܐܦܠܐ ܐܒܐ ܢܬܦܪܥ ܚ̈ܛܗܐ ܕܒܪܗ ܙܟܘܬܗ ܕܙܟܝܐ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܬܗܘܐ ܘܚܛܝܬܗ ܕܚܛܝܐ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܬܗܘܐ
npsh' dkhTy' hy thmwth l' nthpre br' khTh' d'bwhy 'pl' 'b' nthpre khTh' dbrh zkwthh dzky' elwhy thhw' wkhTythh dkhTy' elwhy thhw'
The soul who sins, he shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.

ܥܘ̇ܠܐ ܕܝܢ ܐܢ ܢܗܦܘܟ ܡܢ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܚ̈ܛܗܘܗܝ ܕܥܒܕ ܘܢܛܪ ܦܘܩ̈ܕܢܝ ܘܢܥܒܕ ܕܝܢܐ ܘܙܕܝܩܘܬܐ ܡܚܐ ܢܚܐ ܘܠܐ ܢܡܘܬ
ewl' dyn 'n nhpwk mn klhwn khThwhy debd wnTr pwqdny wnebd dyn' wzdyqwth' mkh' nkh' wl' nmwth
“But if the wicked turns from all his sins that he has committed, and keeps all my statutes, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live. He shall not die.

ܘܟܠܗܘܢ ܚ̈ܛܗܘܗܝ ܕܥܒܕ ܠܐ ܢܬܕܟܪܘܢ ܠܗ ܐܠܐ ܒܙܕܝܩܘܬܐ ܕܥܒܕ ܢܚܐ
wklhwn khThwhy debd l' nthdkrwn lh 'l' bzdyqwth' debd nkh'
None of his transgressions that he has committed will be remembered against him. In his righteousness that he has done, he shall live.

ܠܐ ܨ̇ܒܐ ܐܢܐ ܒܡܘܬܗ ܕܚܛܝܐ ܐܡ̇ܪ ܡܪܐ ܡܪ̈ܘܬܐ ܐܠܐ ܕܢܗܦܘܟ ܡܢ ܐܘܪܚܗ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܘܢܚܐ
l' tsb' 'n' bmwthh dkhTy' 'mr mr' mrwth' 'l' dnhpwk mn 'wrkhh byshth' wnkh'
Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked?” says the Lord Yahweh, “and not rather that he should return from his way, and live?

ܘܐܢ ܢܗܦܘܟ ܙܕܝܩܐ ܡܢ ܙܕܝܩܘܬܗ ܘܢܥܒܕ ܥܘ̣ܠܐ ܘܛܢܦܘܬܐ ܐܝܟ ܗܠܝܢ ܕܥܒܕ ܚܛܝܐ ܟܠܗ̇ ܙܕܝܩܘܬܗ ܕܥܒܕ ܠܐ ܬܬܕܟܪ ܠܗ ܐܠܐ ܒܥܘ̇ܠܐ ܕܥܒܕ ܘܒܚ̈ܛܗܐ ܕܚܛܐ ܒܗܘܢ ܢܡܘܬ
w'n nhpwk zdyq' mn zdyqwthh wnebd ewl' wTnpwth' 'yk hlyn debd khTy' klh zdyqwthh debd l' ththdkr lh 'l' bewl' debd wbkhTh' dkhT' bhwn nmwth
“But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, should he live? None of his righteous deeds that he has done will be remembered. In his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them he shall die.

ܘܐܡܪܬܘܢ ܠܐ ܫܦܝܪ̈ܢ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܫܡܥܘ ܗܟܝܠ ܕܒܝܬ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܝ ܕܝܠܝ ܫܦܝܪ̈ܢ ܐ̈ܢܝܢ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܟܘܢ ܗܘ ܕܝܠܟܘܢ ܠܐ ܫܦܝܪ̈ܢ
w'mrthwn l' shpyrn 'wrkhthh dmry' shmew hkyl dbyth 'ysryl 'wrkhthy dyly shpyrn 'nyn 'wrkhthkwn hw dylkwn l' shpyrn
“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not equal.’ Hear now, house of Israel: Is my way not equal? Aren’t your ways unequal?

ܘܐܢ ܢܗܦܘܟ ܙܕܝܩܐ ܡܢ ܙܕܝܩܘܬܗ ܘܢܥܒܕ ܥܘ̣ܠܐ ܒܗ ܒܥܘ̣ܠܐ ܕܥܒܕ ܢܡܘܬ
w'n nhpwk zdyq' mn zdyqwthh wnebd ewl' bh bewl' debd nmwth
When the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies in it, then he dies in his iniquity that he has done.

ܘܐܢ ܢܗܦܘܟ ܥܘ̇ܠܐ ܡܢ ܥܘܠܘܬܗ ܘܢܥܒܕ ܕܝܢܐ ܘܙܕܝܩܘܬܐ ܢܚܐ ܢܦܫܗ
w'n nhpwk ewl' mn ewlwthh wnebd dyn' wzdyqwth' nkh' npshh
Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive.

ܘܐܢ ܢܚܙܐ ܘܢܗܦܘܟ ܡܢ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܚ̈ܛܗܘܗܝ ܕܥܒܕ ܡܚܐ ܢܚܐ ܘܠܐ ܢܡܘܬ
w'n nkhz' wnhpwk mn klhwn khThwhy debd mkh' nkh' wl' nmwth
Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live. He shall not die.

ܘܐܡ̇ܪܝܢ ܕܒܝܬ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܠܐ ܫܦܝܪ̈ܢ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܝ ܕܝܠܝ ܫܦܝܪ̈ܢ ܐܢܝ̈ܢ ܕܒܝܬ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܠܐ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܟܘܢ ܗܘ ܕܝܠܟܘܢ ܠܐ ܫܦܝܪ̈ܢ
w'mryn dbyth 'ysryl l' shpyrn 'wrkhthh dmry' 'wrkhthy dyly shpyrn 'nyn dbyth 'ysryl 'l' 'wrkhthkwn hw dylkwn l' shpyrn
Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ House of Israel, aren’t my ways fair? Aren’t your ways unfair?

ܡܛܠ ܗܢܐ ܐܢܫ ܐܝܟ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܗ ܐܕܘܢܟܘܢ ܒܝܬ ܐܝܣܪܐܝܠ ܐܡ̇ܪ ܡܪܐ ܡܪ̈ܘܬܐ ܬܘܒܘ ܘܐܬܦܢܘ ܡܢ ܟܠܗ ܥܘ̣ܠܟܘܢ ܘܠܐ ܬܗܘܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܬܘܩܠܬܐ ܠܚ̈ܛܗܝܟܘܢ
mTl hn' 'nsh 'yk 'wrkhthh 'dwnkwn byth 'ysr'yl 'mr mr' mrwth' thwbw w'thpnw mn klh ewlkwn wl' thhw' lkwn thwqlth' lkhThykwn
“Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways,” says the Lord Yahweh. “Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so iniquity will not be your ruin.

ܘܫܕܘ ܡܢܟܘܢ ܟܠܗ ܥܘ̣ܠܐ ܕܥܒܕܬܘܢ ܘܥܒܕܘ ܠܟܘܢ ܠܒܐ ܚܕܬܐ ܘܪܘܚܐ ܚܕܬܐ ܘܠܐ ܬܡܘܬܘܢ ܕܒܝܬ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ
wshdw mnkwn klh ewl' debdthwn webdw lkwn lb' khdth' wrwkh' khdth' wl' thmwthwn dbyth 'ysryl
Cast away from you all your transgressions in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit. For why will you die, house of Israel?

ܡܛܠ ܕܠܐ ܨ̇ܒܐ ܐܢܐ ܒܡܘܬܗ ܕܡܝܬܐ ܐܡ̇ܪ ܡܪܐ ܡܪ̈ܘܬܐ ܐܠܐ ܬܘܒܘ ܘܚܝܘ
mTl dl' tsb' 'n' bmwthh dmyth' 'mr mr' mrwth' 'l' thwbw wkhyw
For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies,” says the Lord Yahweh. “Therefore turn yourselves, and live!
