ואלין שמהת בני ישראל דעלו למצרים עם יעקב גבר ואנש ביתה עלו:
walyn shmhth bny yshral delw lmtsrym em yeqb gbr wansh bythh elw
Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob):

והוה כל נפשתא נפקי ירכא דיעקב שבעין נפשן ויוסף דהוה במצרים:
whwh kl npshtha npqy yrka dyeqb shbeyn npshn wywsp dhwh bmtsrym
All the souls who came out of Jacob’s body were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt already.

ומית יוסף וכל אחוהי וכל דרא ההוא:
wmyth ywsp wkl akhwhy wkl dra hhwa
Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation.

ובני ישראל נפישו ואתילדו וסגיאו ותקיפו לחדא לחדא ואתמליאת ארעא מנהון:
wbny yshral npyshw wathyldw wsgyaw wthqypw lkhda lkhda wathmlyath area mnhwn
The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.

וקם מלכא חדתא על מצרים דלא מקים גזרת יוסף:
wqm mlka khdtha el mtsrym dla mqym gzrth ywsp
Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph.

ואמר לעמה הא עמא בני ישראל סגן ותקיפין מננא:
wamr lemh ha ema bny yshral sgn wthqypyn mnna
He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.

הבו נתחכם להון דלמא יסגון ויהי ארי יערעננא קרב ויתוספון אף אנון על סנאנא ויגיחון בנא קרב ויסקון מן ארעא:
hbw nthkhkm lhwn dlma ysgwn wyhy ary yerenna qrb wythwspwn ap anwn el snana wygykhwn bna qrb wysqwn mn area
Come, let’s deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”

ומניאו עליהון שלטונין מבאישין בדיל לענואהון בפלחנהון ובנו קרוי בית אוצרא לפרעה ית פיתום וית רעמסס:
wmnyaw elyhwn shlTwnyn mbayshyn bdyl lenwahwn bplkhnhwn wbnw qrwy byth awtsra lpreh yth pythwm wyth remss
Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.

וכמא דמענן להון כן סגן וכן תקפין ועקת למצראי מן קדם בני ישראל:
wkma dmenn lhwn kn sgn wkn thqpyn weqth lmtsray mn qdm bny yshral
But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They started to dread the children of Israel.

ואפלחו מצראי ית בני ישראל בקשיו:
waplkhw mtsray yth bny yshral bqshyw
The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve,
14
ואמררו ית חייהון בפלחנא קשיא בטינא ובלבנין ובכל פלחנא בחקלא ית כל פלחנהון דאפלחו בהון בקשיו:
wamrrw yth khyyhwn bplkhna qshya bTyna wblbnyn wbkl plkhna bkhqla yth kl plkhnhwn daplkhw bhwn bqshyw
and they made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.

ואמר מלכא דמצרים לחיתא יהודיתא דשום חדא שפרה ושום תניתא פועה:
wamr mlka dmtsrym lkhytha yhwdytha dshwm khda shprh wshwm thnytha pweh
The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah,

ואמר כד תהוין מולדן ית יהודיתא ותחזין על מתברא אם בר הוא תקטלן יתה ואם ברתא היא ותקימנה:
wamr kd thhwyn mwldn yth yhwdytha wthkhzyn el mthbra am br hwa thqTln ythh wam brtha hya wthqymnh
and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

ודחילא חיתא מן קדם יי ולא עבדא כמא דמליל עמהן מלכא דמצרים וקימא ית בניא:
wdkhyla khytha mn qdm yy wla ebda kma dmlyl emhn mlka dmtsrym wqyma yth bnya
But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.

וקרא מלכא דמצרים לחיתא ואמר להן מה דין עבדתון ית פתגמא הדין וקימתון ית בניא:
wqra mlka dmtsrym lkhytha wamr lhn mh dyn ebdthwn yth pthgma hdyn wqymthwn yth bnya
The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing and saved the boys alive?”

ואמרא חיתא לפרעה ארי לא כנשיא מצריתא יהודיתא ארי חכימן אנון עד לא עלת לותהן חיתא וילידן:
wamra khytha lpreh ary la knshya mtsrytha yhwdytha ary khkymn anwn ed la elth lwthhn khytha wylydn
The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

ואוטיב יי לחיתא וסגי עמא ותקיפו לחדא:
wawTyb yy lkhytha wsgy ema wthqypw lkhda
God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.
21
והוה כד דחילא חיתא מן קדם יי ועבד להון בתין:
whwh kd dkhyla khytha mn qdm yy webd lhwn bthyn
Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.
22
ופקיד פרעה לכל עמה למימר כל ברא דיתיליד ליהודאי בנהרא תרמנה וכל ברתא תקימון:
wpqyd preh lkl emh lmymr kl bra dythylyd lyhwday bnhra thrmnh wkl brtha thqymwn
Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”
