1
ואלין שמהת בני ישראל דעלו למצרים עם יעקב גבר ואנש ביתה עלו:
elw bythh wansh gbr yeqb em lmtsrym delw yshral bny shmhth walyn
Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob):

והוה כל נפשתא נפקי ירכא דיעקב שבעין נפשן ויוסף דהוה במצרים:
bmtsrym dhwh wywsp npshn shbeyn dyeqb yrka npqy npshtha kl whwh
All the souls who came out of Jacob’s body were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt already.

ומית יוסף וכל אחוהי וכל דרא ההוא:
hhwa dra wkl akhwhy wkl ywsp wmyth
Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation.

ובני ישראל נפישו ואתילדו וסגיאו ותקיפו לחדא לחדא ואתמליאת ארעא מנהון:
mnhwn area wathmlyath lkhda lkhda wthqypw wsgyaw wathyldw npyshw yshral wbny
The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.

וקם מלכא חדתא על מצרים דלא מקים גזרת יוסף:
ywsp gzrth mqym dla mtsrym el khdtha mlka wqm
Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph.

ואמר לעמה הא עמא בני ישראל סגן ותקיפין מננא:
mnna wthqypyn sgn yshral bny ema ha lemh wamr
He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.

הבו נתחכם להון דלמא יסגון ויהי ארי יערעננא קרב ויתוספון אף אנון על סנאנא ויגיחון בנא קרב ויסקון מן ארעא:
area mn wysqwn qrb bna wygykhwn snana el anwn ap wythwspwn qrb yerenna ary wyhy ysgwn dlma lhwn nthkhkm hbw
Come, let’s deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”

ומניאו עליהון שלטונין מבאישין בדיל לענואהון בפלחנהון ובנו קרוי בית אוצרא לפרעה ית פיתום וית רעמסס:
remss wyth pythwm yth lpreh awtsra byth qrwy wbnw bplkhnhwn lenwahwn bdyl mbayshyn shlTwnyn elyhwn wmnyaw
Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.

וכמא דמענן להון כן סגן וכן תקפין ועקת למצראי מן קדם בני ישראל:
yshral bny qdm mn lmtsray weqth thqpyn wkn sgn kn lhwn dmenn wkma
But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They started to dread the children of Israel.

ואפלחו מצראי ית בני ישראל בקשיו:
bqshyw yshral bny yth mtsray waplkhw
The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve,

ואמררו ית חייהון בפלחנא קשיא בטינא ובלבנין ובכל פלחנא בחקלא ית כל פלחנהון דאפלחו בהון בקשיו:
bqshyw bhwn daplkhw plkhnhwn kl yth bkhqla plkhna wbkl wblbnyn bTyna qshya bplkhna khyyhwn yth wamrrw
and they made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.

ואמר מלכא דמצרים לחיתא יהודיתא דשום חדא שפרה ושום תניתא פועה:
pweh thnytha wshwm shprh khda dshwm yhwdytha lkhytha dmtsrym mlka wamr
The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah,

ואמר כד תהוין מולדן ית יהודיתא ותחזין על מתברא אם בר הוא תקטלן יתה ואם ברתא היא ותקימנה:
wthqymnh hya brtha wam ythh thqTln hwa br am mthbra el wthkhzyn yhwdytha yth mwldn thhwyn kd wamr
and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

ודחילא חיתא מן קדם יי ולא עבדא כמא דמליל עמהן מלכא דמצרים וקימא ית בניא:
bnya yth wqyma dmtsrym mlka emhn dmlyl kma ebda wla yy qdm mn khytha wdkhyla
But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.

וקרא מלכא דמצרים לחיתא ואמר להן מה דין עבדתון ית פתגמא הדין וקימתון ית בניא:
bnya yth wqymthwn hdyn pthgma yth ebdthwn dyn mh lhn wamr lkhytha dmtsrym mlka wqra
The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing and saved the boys alive?”

ואמרא חיתא לפרעה ארי לא כנשיא מצריתא יהודיתא ארי חכימן אנון עד לא עלת לותהן חיתא וילידן:
wylydn khytha lwthhn elth la ed anwn khkymn ary yhwdytha mtsrytha knshya la ary lpreh khytha wamra
The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

ואוטיב יי לחיתא וסגי עמא ותקיפו לחדא:
lkhda wthqypw ema wsgy lkhytha yy wawTyb
God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.
21
והוה כד דחילא חיתא מן קדם יי ועבד להון בתין:
bthyn lhwn webd yy qdm mn khytha dkhyla kd whwh
Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.
