Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

בלשאצר אמר ׀ בטעם חמרא להיתיה למאני דהבא וכספא די הנפק נבוכדנצר אבוהי מן היכלא די בירושלם וישתון בהון מלכא ורברבנוהי שגלתה ולחנתה

Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded that the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem be brought to him, that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink from them.

באדין היתיו מאני דהבא די הנפקו מן היכלא די בית אלהא די בירושלם ואשתיו בהון מלכא ורברבנוהי שגלתה ולחנתה

Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of God’s house which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them.

אשתיו חמרא ושבחו לאלהי דהבא וכספא נחשא פרזלא אעא ואבנא
ashthyw khmra wshbkhw lalhy dhba wkspa nkhsha przla aea wabna
They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

בה שעתה נפקה אצבען די יד אנש וכתבן לקבל נברשתא על גירא די כתל היכלא די מלכא ומלכא חזה פס ידא די כתבה
bh shethh npqh atsben dy yd ansh wkthbn lqbl nbrshtha el gyra dy kthl hykla dy mlka wmlka khzh ps yda dy kthbh
In the same hour, the fingers of a man’s hand came out and wrote near the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace. The king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

אדין מלכא זיוהי שנוהי ורעינהי יבהלונה וקטרי חרצה משתרין וארכבתה דא לדא נקשן
adyn mlka zywhy shnwhy wreynhy ybhlwnh wqTry khrtsh mshthryn warkbthh da lda nqshn
Then the king’s face was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his thighs were loosened, and his knees struck one against another.

קרא מלכא בחיל להעלה לאשפיא כשדאי וגזריא ענה מלכא ואמר ׀ לחכימי בבל די כל אנש די יקרה כתבה דנה ופשרה יחונני ארגונא ילבש והמניכא די דהבא על צוארה ותלתי במלכותא ישלט {ס}

The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and shows me its interpretation shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

אדין עלין כל חכימי מלכא ולא כהלין כתבא למקרא ופשרה להודעה למלכא
adyn elyn kl khkymy mlka wla khlyn kthba lmqra wpshrh lhwdeh lmlka
Then all the king’s wise men came in; but they could not read the writing, and couldn’t make known to the king the interpretation.

אדין מלכא בלשאצר שגיא מתבהל וזיוהי שנין עלוהי ורברבנוהי משתבשין
adyn mlka blshatsr shgya mthbhl wzywhy shnyn elwhy wrbrbnwhy mshthbshyn
Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, and his face was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed.

מלכתא לקבל מלי מלכא ורברבנוהי לבית משתיא עלת ענת מלכתא ואמרת מלכא לעלמין חיי אל יבהלוך רעיונך וזיוך אל ישתנו

The queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house. The queen spoke and said, “O king, live forever; don’t let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your face be changed.

איתי גבר במלכותך די רוח אלהין קדישין בה וביומי אבוך נהירו ושכלתנו וחכמה כחכמת אלהין השתכחת בה ומלכא נבכדנצר אבוך רב חרטמין אשפין כשדאין גזרין הקימה אבוך מלכא
aythy gbr bmlkwthk dy rwkh alhyn qdyshyn bh wbywmy abwk nhyrw wshklthnw wkhkmh kkhkmth alhyn hshthkkhth bh wmlka nbkdntsr abwk rb khrTmyn ashpyn kshdayn gzryn hqymh abwk mlka
There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him. The king, Nebuchadnezzar, your father—yes, the king, your father—made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers,

כל קבל די רוח ׀ יתירה ומנדע ושכלתנו מפשר חלמין ואחוית אחידן ומשרא קטרין השתכחת בה בדניאל די מלכא שם שמה בלטשאצר כען דניאל יתקרי ופשרה יהחוה {פ}
kl qbl dy rwkhythyrh wmnde wshklthnw mpshr khlmyn wakhwyth akhydn wmshra qTryn hshthkkhth bh bdnyal dy mlka shm shmh blTshatsr ken dnyal ythqry wpshrh yhkhwh p
because an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting of dreams, showing of dark sentences, and dissolving of doubts were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.”

באדין דניאל העל קדם מלכא ענה מלכא ואמר לדניאל אנת הוא דניאל די מן בני גלותא די יהוד די היתי מלכא אבי מן יהוד

Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel, “Are you that Daniel of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?

ושמעת עלך די רוח אלהין בך ונהירו ושכלתנו וחכמה יתירה השתכחת בך

I have heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you and that light, understanding, and excellent wisdom are found in you.

וכען העלו קדמי חכימיא אשפיא די כתבה דנה יקרון ופשרה להודעתני ולא כהלין פשר מלתא להחויה
wken helw qdmy khkymya ashpya dy kthbh dnh yqrwn wpshrh lhwdethny wla khlyn pshr mltha lhkhwyh
Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me its interpretation; but they could not show the interpretation of the thing.

ואנה שמעת עלך די תכול פשרין למפשר וקטרין למשרא כען הן תכול כתבא למקרא ופשרה להודעותני ארגונא תלבש והמניכא די דהבא על צוארך ותלתא במלכותא תשלט {פ}
wanh shmeth elk dy thkwl pshryn lmpshr wqTryn lmshra ken hn thkwl kthba lmqra wpshrh lhwdewthny argwna thlbsh whmnyka dy dhba el tswark wthltha bmlkwtha thshlT p
But I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and dissolve doubts. Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

באדין ענה דניאל ואמר קדם מלכא מתנתך לך להוין ונבזביתך לאחרן הב ברם כתבא אקרא למלכא ופשרא אהודענה
badyn enh dnyal wamr qdm mlka mthnthk lk lhwyn wnbzbythk lakhrn hb brm kthba aqra lmlka wpshra ahwdenh
Then Daniel answered before the king, “Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another. Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

אנת מלכא אלהא עלאה מלכותא ורבותא ויקרא והדרא יהב לנבכדנצר אבוך
anth mlka alha elah mlkwtha wrbwtha wyqra whdra yhb lnbkdntsr abwk
“To you, king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty.

ומן רבותא די יהב לה כל עממיא אמיא ולשניא הוו זיעין ודחלין מן קדמוהי די הוא צבא הוה קטל ודי הוה צבא הוה מחא ודי הוה צבא הוה מרים ודי הוא צבא הוא משפל

Because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. He killed whom he wanted to, and he kept alive whom he wanted to. He raised up whom he wanted to, and he put down whom he wanted to.

וכדי רם לבבה ורוחה תקפת להזדה הנחת מן כרסא מלכותה ויקרה העדיו מנה
wkdy rm lbbh wrwkhh thqpth lhzdh hnkhth mn krsa mlkwthh wyqrh hedyw mnh
But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.

ומן בני אנשא טריד ולבבה ׀ עם חיותא שויו ועם ערדיא מדרה עשבא כתורין יטעמונה ומטל שמיא גשמה יצטבע עד די ידע די שליט אלהא עלאה במלכות אנשא ולמן די יצבא יהקים עלה
wmn bny ansha Tryd wlbbh em khywtha shwyw wem erdya mdrh eshba kthwryn yTemwnh wmTl shmya gshmh ytsTbe ed dy yde dy shlyT alha elah bmlkwth ansha wlmn dy ytsba yhqym elh
He was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the animals’, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky, until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and that he sets up over it whomever he will.

ואנת ברה בלשאצר לא השפלת לבבך כל קבל די כל דנה ידעת

“You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,

ועל מרא שמיא ׀ התרוממת ולמאניא די ביתה היתיו קדמך ואנת ורברבנך שגלתך ולחנתך חמרא שתין בהון ולאלהי כספא ודהבא נחשא פרזלא אעא ואבנא די לא חזין ולא שמעין ולא ידעין שבחת ולאלהא די נשמתך בידה וכל ארחתך לה לא הדרת
wel mra shmyahthrwmmth wlmanya dy bythh hythyw qdmk wanth wrbrbnk shglthk wlkhnthk khmra shthyn bhwn wlalhy kspa wdhba nkhsha przla aea wabna dy la khzyn wla shmeyn wla ydeyn shbkhth wlalha dy nshmthk bydh wkl arkhthk lh la hdrth
but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, or hear, or know; and you have not glorified the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways.

באדין מן קדמוהי שליח פסא די ידא וכתבא דנה רשים
badyn mn qdmwhy shlykh psa dy yda wkthba dnh rshym
Then the part of the hand was sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed.
25
ודנה כתבא די רשים מנא מנא תקל ופרסין
wdnh kthba dy rshym mna mna thql wprsyn
“This is the writing that was inscribed: ‘MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.’

דנה פשר מלתא מנא מנה אלהא מלכותך והשלמה
dnh pshr mltha mna mnh alha mlkwthk whshlmh
“This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE: God has counted your kingdom, and brought it to an end.
27
תקל תקילת במאזניא והשתכחת חסיר
thql thqylth bmaznya whshthkkhth khsyr
TEKEL: you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.
28
פרס פריסת מלכותך ויהיבת למדי ופרס
prs prysth mlkwthk wyhybth lmdy wprs
PERES: your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.”

באדין ׀ אמר בלשאצר והלבשו לדניאל ארגונא והמניכא די דהבא על צוארה והכרזו עלוהי די להוא שליט תלתא במלכותא
badyn amr blshatsr whlbshw ldnyal argwna whmnyka dy dhba el tswarh whkrzw elwhy dy lhwa shlyT thltha bmlkwtha
Then Belshazzar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

בה בליליא קטיל בלאשצר מלכא כשדאה {פ}

In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.
