Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.

חלם חזית וידחלנני והרהרין על משכבי וחזוי ראשי יבהלנני
khlm khzyth wydkhlnny whrhryn el mshkby wkhzwy rashy ybhlnny
It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked toward me.

ומני שים טעם להנעלה קדמי לכל חכימי בבל די פשר חלמא יהודענני
wmny shym Tem lhnelh qdmy lkl khkymy bbl dy pshr khlma yhwdenny
How great are his signs! How mighty are his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. His dominion is from generation to generation.

באדין עלין חרטמיא אשפיא כשדאי וגזריא וחלמא אמר אנה קדמיהון ופשרה לא מהודעין לי

I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace.

ועד אחרין על קדמי דניאל די שמה בלטשאצר כשם אלהי ודי רוח אלהין קדישין בה וחלמא קדמוהי אמרת
wed akhryn el qdmy dnyal dy shmh blTshatsr kshm alhy wdy rwkh alhyn qdyshyn bh wkhlma qdmwhy amrth
I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

בלטשאצר רב חרטמיא די ׀ אנה ידעת די רוח אלהין קדישין בך וכל רז לא אנס לך חזוי חלמי די חזית ופשרה אמר

Therefore I made a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.

וחזוי ראשי על משכבי חזה הוית ואלו אילן בגוא ארעא ורומה שגיא
wkhzwy rashy el mshkby khzh hwyth walw ayln bgwa area wrwmh shgya
Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in; and I told them the dream, but they didn’t make known to me its interpretation.

רבה אילנא ותקף ורומה ימטא לשמיא וחזותה לסוף כל ארעא

But at last, Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. I told the dream before him, saying,

עפיה שפיר ואנבה שגיא ומזון לכלא בה תחתוהי תטלל ׀ חיות ברא ובענפוהי ידורן צפרי שמיא ומנה יתזין כל בשרא

“Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation.

חזה הוית בחזוי ראשי על משכבי ואלו עיר וקדיש מן שמיא נחת
khzh hwyth bkhzwy rashy el mshkby walw eyr wqdysh mn shmya nkhth
These were the visions of my head on my bed: I saw, and behold, a tree in the middle of the earth; and its height was great.

קרא בחיל וכן אמר גדו אילנא וקצצו ענפוהי אתרו עפיה ובדרו אנבה תנד חיותא מן תחתוהי וצפריא מן ענפוהי

The tree grew and was strong. Its height reached to the sky and its sight to the end of all the earth.

ברם עקר שרשוהי בארעא שבקו ובאסור די פרזל ונחש בדתאא די ברא ובטל שמיא יצטבע ועם חיותא חלקה בעשב ארעא
brm eqr shrshwhy barea shbqw wbaswr dy przl wnkhsh bdthaa dy bra wbTl shmya ytsTbe wem khywtha khlqh beshb area
Its leaves were beautiful, and it had much fruit, and in it was food for all. The animals of the field had shade under it, and the birds of the sky lived in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.

לבבה מן אנשא ישנון ולבב חיוה יתיהב לה ושבעה עדנין יחלפון עלוהי
lbbh mn ansha yshnwn wlbb khywh ythyhb lh wshbeh ednyn ykhlpwn elwhy
“I saw in the visions of my head on my bed, and behold, a holy watcher came down from the sky.

בגזרת עירין פתגמא ומאמר קדישין שאלתא עד דברת די ינדעון חייא די שליט עלאה במלכות אנשא ולמן די יצבא יתננה ושפל אנשים יקים עלה
bgzrth eyryn pthgma wmamr qdyshyn shaltha ed dbrth dy yndewn khyya dy shlyT elah bmlkwth ansha wlmn dy ytsba ythnnh wshpl anshym yqym elh
He cried aloud and said this: ‘Cut down the tree, and cut off its branches! Shake off its leaves and scatter its fruit! Let the animals get away from under it and the birds from its branches.

דנה חלמא חזית אנה מלכא נבוכדנצר ואנת בלטשאצר פשרא ׀ אמר כל קבל די ׀ כל חכימי מלכותי לא יכלין פשרא להודעותני ואנת כהל די רוח אלהין קדישין בך

Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of the sky. Let his portion be with the animals in the grass of the earth.

אדין דניאל די שמה בלטשאצר אשתומם כשעה חדה ורעינהי יבהלנה ענה מלכא ואמר בלטשאצר חלמא ופשרא אל יבהלך ענה בלטשאצר ואמר מראי חלמא לשנאך ופשרה לערך
adyn dnyal dy shmh blTshatsr ashthwmm ksheh khdh wreynhy ybhlnh enh mlka wamr blTshatsr khlma wpshra al ybhlk enh blTshatsr wamr mray khlma lshnak wpshrh lerk
Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let an animal’s heart be given to him. Then let seven times pass over him.

אילנא די חזית די רבה ותקף ורומה ימטא לשמיא וחזותה לכל ארעא
aylna dy khzyth dy rbh wthqp wrwmh ymTa lshmya wkhzwthh lkl area
“‘The sentence is by the decree of the watchers and the demand by the word of the holy ones, to the intent that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will, and sets up over it the lowest of men.’

ועפיה שפיר ואנבה שגיא ומזון לכלא בה תחתוהי תדור חיות ברא ובענפוהי ישכנן צפרי שמיא

“This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and you, Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”

אנת הוא מלכא די רבת ותקפת ורבותך רבת ומטת לשמיא ושלטנך לסוף ארעא

Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken mute for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered, “Belteshazzar, don’t let the dream or the interpretation, trouble you.” Belteshazzar answered, “My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you, and its interpretation to your adversaries.

ודי חזה מלכא עיר וקדיש נחת ׀ מן שמיא ואמר גדו אילנא וחבלוהי ברם עקר שרשוהי בארעא שבקו ובאסור די פרזל ונחש בדתאא די ברא ובטל שמיא יצטבע ועם חיות ברא חלקה עד די שבעה עדנין יחלפון עלוהי

The tree that you saw, which grew and was strong, whose height reached to the sky and its sight to all the earth;

דנה פשרא מלכא וגזרת עלאה היא די מטת על מראי מלכא
dnh pshra mlka wgzrth elah hya dy mTth el mray mlka
whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit plentiful, and in it was food for all; under which the animals of the field lived, and on whose branches the birds of the sky had their habitation—

ולך טרדין מן אנשא ועם חיות ברא להוה מדרך ועשבא כתורין ׀ לך יטעמון ומטל שמיא לך מצבעין ושבעה עדנין יחלפון עלך עד די תנדע די שליט עלאה במלכות אנשא ולמן די יצבא יתננה
wlk Trdyn mn ansha wem khywth bra lhwh mdrk weshba kthwryn lk yTemwn wmTl shmya lk mtsbeyn wshbeh ednyn ykhlpwn elk ed dy thnde dy shlyT elah bmlkwth ansha wlmn dy ytsba ythnnh
it is you, O king, that have grown and become strong; for your greatness has grown, and reaches to the sky, and your dominion to the end of the earth.

ודי אמרו למשבק עקר שרשוהי די אילנא מלכותך לך קימא מן די תנדע די שלטן שמיא

“Whereas the king saw a holy watcher coming down from the sky and saying, ‘Cut down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of the sky. Let his portion be with the animals of the field, until seven times pass over him.’

להן מלכא מלכי ישפר עלך וחטאך בצדקה פרק ועויתך במחן ענין הן תהוה ארכה לשלותך

“This is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which has come on my lord the king:

כלא מטא על נבוכדנצר מלכא {פ}
kla mTa el nbwkdntsr mlka p
You will be driven from men and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You will be made to eat grass as oxen, and will be wet with the dew of the sky, and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.

לקצת ירחין תרי עשר על היכל מלכותא די בבל מהלך הוה
lqtsth yrkhyn thry eshr el hykl mlkwtha dy bbl mhlk hwh
Whereas it was commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be sure to you after you know that Heaven rules.

ענה מלכא ואמר הלא דא היא בבל רבתא די אנה בניתה לבית מלכו בתקף חסני וליקר הדרי
enh mlka wamr hla da hya bbl rbtha dy anh bnythh lbyth mlkw bthqp khsny wlyqr hdry
Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your tranquility.”

עוד מלתא בפם מלכא קל מן שמיא נפל לך אמרין נבוכדנצר מלכא מלכותא עדת מנך

All this came on the King Nebuchadnezzar.

ומן אנשא לך טרדין ועם חיות ברא מדרך עשבא כתורין לך יטעמון ושבעה עדנין יחלפון עלך עד די תנדע די שליט עלאה במלכות אנשא ולמן די יצבא יתננה
wmn ansha lk Trdyn wem khywth bra mdrk eshba kthwryn lk yTemwn wshbeh ednyn ykhlpwn elk ed dy thnde dy shlyT elah bmlkwth ansha wlmn dy ytsba ythnnh
At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon.

בה שעתא מלתא ספת על נבוכדנצר ומן אנשא טריד ועשבא כתורין יאכל ומטל שמיא גשמה יצטבע עד די שערה כנשרין רבה וטפרוהי כצפרין

The king spoke and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling place by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?”

ולקצת יומיא אנה נבוכדנצר עיני ׀ לשמיא נטלת ומנדעי עלי יתוב ולעלאה ברכת ולחי עלמא שבחת והדרת די שלטנה שלטן עלם ומלכותה עם דר ודר

While the word was in the king’s mouth, a voice came from the sky, saying, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: ‘The kingdom has departed from you.

וכל דירי ארעא כלה חשיבין וכמצביה עבד בחיל שמיא ודירי ארעא ולא איתי די ימחא בידה ויאמר לה מה עבדת
wkl dyry area klh khshybyn wkmtsbyh ebd bkhyl shmya wdyry area wla aythy dy ymkha bydh wyamr lh mh ebdth

בה זמנא מנדעי ׀ יתוב עלי וליקר מלכותי הדרי וזיוי יתוב עלי ולי הדברי ורברבני יבעון ועל מלכותי התקנת ורבו יתירה הוספת לי
bh zmna mndey ythwb ely wlyqr mlkwthy hdry wzywy ythwb ely wly hdbry wrbrbny ybewn wel mlkwthy hthqnth wrbw ythyrh hwspth ly
This was fulfilled the same hour on Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; and his body was wet with the dew of the sky until his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.

כען אנה נבכדנצר משבח ומרומם ומהדר למלך שמיא די כל מעבדוהי קשט וארחתה דין ודי מהלכין בגוה יכל להשפלה {פ}

At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation.
